The overall aims and objectives <strong>of</strong> the project were to:<br />

Slow down and reverse the degradation <strong>of</strong> natural environment (using appropriate<br />

soil and moisture conservation technology);<br />

Conserve soil and water through in-situ moisture conservation, water harvesting and<br />

land management practices;<br />

Increase and improve the production and income from agriculture, horticulture,<br />

fodder, fiber, fuel wood and livestock (through the process <strong>of</strong> soil and water<br />

conservation and other inputs)<br />

Reduce flooding and devastation (caused by erosion <strong>of</strong> soil)<br />

Briefly the main immediate objectives <strong>of</strong> the project were to:<br />

Improve the productive potential <strong>of</strong> the Shiwalik hills in Uttaranchal<br />

(using/appropriate watershed treatment technologies and participatory approaches);<br />

<br />

<br />

<br />

Assist institutional development;<br />

Generate and develop additional livelihood opportunities and<br />

Consolidate progress already made (in unifying approaches to watershed<br />

development/management among various programs operating in the Shiwalik hills).<br />

Original Components : Broad and sub-component areas were:<br />

Watershed Development (Protection and Restoration) Treatments for:<br />

a) Natural resources conservation, development and management – on (i) Non-arable<br />

lands, (ii) Arable lands, (iii) Drainage lines through forestry, soil conservation and<br />

water sources development.<br />

b) Improved and diversified farming system – covering agriculture, horticulture, trees<br />

on non-forest lands and vermin composting, organic farming and IPM, in other<br />

words, bio-fertilizers and bio-agents, livestock and poultry development.<br />

c) Rural infrastructure development – road, bridle track, market and support<br />

permanent assets.<br />
