Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the
leading Pharisees, and the people there were
observing him carefully. He told a parable...
“When you are invited, go and take the lowest place...
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,
but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
LIVING
the
WORD
Choices That Define A Disciple
Getting things straight in our minds isn’t easy. Wisdom
reminds us: “For the deliberations of mortals are timid, /
and unsure are our plans. / For the corruptible body
burdens the soul / and the earthen shelter weighs down
the mind that has many concerns (Wisdom 9:14-15).”
Jesus has confidence that we can make a commitment to
Him, responding to the demands He asks of His disciples.
• FIRST READING
Who can conceive what the Lord intends? (Wis 9:13-18b).
God’s ways are far beyond our ways. We cannot hope to
know exactly what God wants for us. Yet, God reveals his
truth to us through wisdom. He breathes his soul into us
to place the breath of truth into our hearts. This is the
only way that we can make sense of our lives (for on our
own we cannot even understand earthly things, let alone
heavenly things). When God gives us wisdom, we can
make sense out of our lives. Through His wisdom God
created the world. God’s wisdom teaches us His ways.
• SECOND READING
Receive him no longer as a slave, but as a beloved
brother (Philemon 9-10, 12-17).
Paul’s letter to Philemon from prison is the only letter he
wrote to an individual. One of Philemon’s slaves, Onesimus,
visited Paul there (it seems as if he had run away
from Philemon). During his visit, Onesimus converted to
the faith. Paul was now sending him back to Philemon.
Paul asks Philemon not to punish the slave and makes a
word play upon his name, saying that Onesimus was once
worthless, but now he is worthy (which is the meaning of
the name Onesimus). He never exactly says that
Onesimus should be set free (for Paul seems to accept
slavery as an established institution), but he certainly
hints that Philemon should do this as a favor to Paul.
• GOSPEL
Anyone of you who does not renounce all possessions
cannot be my disciple (Luke 14:25-33).
We are given an example of gospel irony: we must lose
our lives in order to save them. We must leave everything
that we have in order to gain the world. This is not logical
according to the standards of the world, but it is the
wisdom of the Gospel. The saying at the beginning of this
passage is typical of the Middle Eastern way of speaking.
Jesus tells His disciples that they must hate their parents
to follow Him. This is His way of saying that we must love
Him more than we love others. He must be at the center
of our lives. It is clear that we must be careful how we
interpret this saying, “Lest we interpret literally passages
that were intended to be understood in a more symbolic
manner.” The examples at the end of the passage speaks
of knowing what we are committing ourselves to when
we make a decision “such as the decision to follow Jesus.”
It will sooner or later cost us all that we have, but we will
acquire more than we ever hoped to receive.
• REFLECTION
Old Dombledore, the wise headmaster of Hogwarts, tells
young Harry Potter that the choices that we make define
us far more than our abilities. Choice is at the heart of
Jesus’ words to the crowds in next week’s Gospel. He outlines
three decisions that define a disciple: (1) Putting
Jesus first, above all other persons, plans and possessions.
Before family, before friends, even before one’s
own life, a disciple chooses Jesus. This choice had to be
made by the apostles, by the other first disciples, and by
all who have come after, down to our own day, faithfully
living out a commitment to Jesus in all the circumstances
of life. (2) Carrying one’s one cross and following after
Jesus. This means taking up whatever duty calls us to lay
down our life in service for the sake of others. It involves
making a realistic appraisal of the resources that we have
at our disposal. Count the cost before committing. (3)
Finally, He asks for a renunciation of all possessions, allowing
no thing, just as there is to be no person, to take
the place in our hearts that belongs to Christ. An example
of this commitment is found in St. Paul’s request in his
letter to Philemon. He asks Philemon to take his slave
Onesimus back into his household, not simply as a slave,
but as a brother in Christ. We do not know what Philemon
chose. We do know that it would have cost him.
Pro-Life Reflection
God did not give us a spirit of timidity but rather
a spirit of power and of love and of wisdom. — Tim 1:7
REFLECTION:
Our pro-life work requires constant courage, nurtured
through Scripture, incessant prayer, and the example of
saints and historical figures who fought against the injustices
of their times. When we feel we don't have courage,
we should simply do what we would do if we did.
PRAYER:
Lord, at times I ask what I should do next, but I already know.
I simply need the courage to do it. Grant it to me today.
“I baptize
Twenty Second Sunday In Ordinary Time
August 29, 2010—Page Nine
Saint of the Week
St. Martin de Porres
1571-1639
IT WAS SAID THAT EVEN AS A CHILD
HE GAVE HIS HEART AND HIS GOODS
TO THE POOR AND DESPISED. He was
the illegitimate son of a freed
woman of Panama, possibly black
or Native American stock, and a Spanish grandee of
Lima, Peru. Martin inherited the features and dark
complexion of his mother. That irked his father, who
finally acknowledged his son after eight years. After
his sister’s birth, the father abandoned the family and
they were then locked into a low level of society.
When he was 12, his mother apprenticed him to a
barber-surgeon. He learned how to cut hair and also
how to draw blood (a standard medical treatment
then), care for wounds and prepare and administer
medicines. After a few years Martin applied to the
Dominicans to be a "lay helper," not feeling himself
worthy to be a religious brother. After nine years, the
example of his prayer and penance, charity and humility
led the community to request him to make full
religious profession. Many of his nights were spent in
prayer and penitential practices; his days were filled
with nursing the sick and caring for the poor. It was
particularly impressive that he treated all people regardless
of their color, race or status. He was instrumental
in founding an orphanage, took care of slaves
brought from Africa and managed the daily alms of
the priory with practicality as well as generosity. He
became the procurator for both priory and city,
whether it was a matter of "blankets, shirts, candles,
candy, miracles or prayers!" When his priory was in
debt, he said, "I am only a poor mulatto. Sell me. I am
the property of the order. Sell me."
Side by side with his daily work in the kitchen,
laundry and infirmary, Martin’s life reflected God’s
extraordinary gifts: ecstasies that lifted him into the
air, light filling the room where he prayed, bilocation,
miraculous knowledge, instantaneous cures and a
remarkable rapport with animals. His charity extended
to beasts of the field and even to the vermin
of the kitchen. He would excuse the raids of mice and
rats on the grounds that they were underfed; he kept
stray cats and dogs at his sister’s house. He became a
formidable fundraiser, obtaining thousands of dollars
for dowries for poor girls so that they could marry or
enter a convent. Many of his fellow religious took him
as their spiritual director, but he continued to call
himself a "poor slave." He was a good friend of another
Dominican saint of Peru, Rose of Lima.
