Page Four — May 12, 2013 Scripture Reflections for THE SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD LIVING the WORD Sunday, May 12, 2013 TODAY'S FOCUS: A COMFORT AND A CHALLENGE The Feast of the Ascension opens our eyes to the ongoing role of the risen Lord in our lives and deepens our awareness of the reason we hold on to hope. No matter what is happening in our world, the power of God is at work to transform all creation. • FIRST READING As the Apostles were looking on, Jesus was lifted up (Acts 1;1-11). This reading begins with a dedication of the Acts of the Apostles to Theophilus (we do not know who Theophilus was). He might be a royal official, a rich patron, or his name symbolic (for “Theos” in Greek means “God” and “phileo” means “to love,” so this book could be intended for those who love God: Christians). The disciples ask Jesus whether it is time for the Kingdom of God. His answer is ambiguous, the kingdom was dawning, but not in the manner that they expected. They thought it was going to be a political entity, but this was not what Jesus had come to establish. Jesus was the King who reigned in our hearts. Acts gives an outline of the ministry of the early Church. It would begin in Judea, and then extend to Samaria, and finally reach to the ends of the earth. This prediction was fulfilled when the Gospel reached Rome, the political ends of the earth. • SECOND READING Christ has entered into heaven itself (Ephesians 1:17-23). We are given two revelations. The first is that we will know God the Father. This is not knowing about God, but Saint Anthony Catholic Church knowing God. The second is the glory to which God has called us. This is our hope and the meaning of our lives. The latter part of the reading speaks of how the Father raised Jesus from the dead (for Jesus did not raise Himself, He was raised by the Father). He is enthroned and is above every principality, authority, power and dominion. In the Greek world, that which was totally spiritual was considered to be superior to the material. The angels (here called principalities, etc.) were totally spiritual, while Jesus was both spiritual and material. • GOSPEL As He blessed them, He was taken up to heaven (Luke 24:46 -53). Jesus reminds the disciples that all that happened was what had been foretold. This agrees with Luke’s emphasis that God had a plan, and Jesus’ ministry was to fulfill that plan. He then tells His disciples to remain in the city (Jerusalem) until they will have been clothed in power (until they will have received the gift of the Holy Spirit). Jesus ascends into heaven from the Mount of Olives. That mount was always associated with the end of time, and the events of Jesus’ death, resurrection, ascension, and the descent of the Spirit were the dawning of the Kingdom of God. • REFLECTION The Ascension is not a feast that brings an end to Jesus’ work. Rather, it marks Jesus’ transition from a limited sphere of activity — preaching, teaching, healing, living, and dying within the geographical space of Israel and its environs two thousand years ago — to the exalted position of being in glory at the Father’s right hand, interceding for us all, with “all things beneath His feet,” having been given “as head over all things to the Church, which is His body, the fullness of the One who fills all things in every way” (Ephesians 1:23). This is a most comforting vision of Jesus and His ongoing role of praying for all of creation. The challenge comes from Luke’s two versions of the Ascension, reminding us that Jesus was not signaling “mission accomplished.” Note how Jesus quickly dismisses the suggestion that now was the time for Israel to be restored to a position of power as in the good old days of King David. Instead, Jesus prepares them for the next phase of God’s plan for the world: working under the power of the Holy Spirit. A great deal of work remains to be done. So… don’t stand around looking up. Get moving! Are angels whispering for you to “move on” and take up some work that invites your bearing witness to Christ? Michael Pawlowicz (ORDAINED TODAY) 2012 • 2013 YEAR OF FAITH DIOCESE OF JOLIET CATECHISM CORNER In this month traditionally dedicated to the Queen of All Saints, we recall how Mary offered the perfect act of faith (in Luke 1:26-38) as well as how countless generations of holy men and women after her have said “yes” to the call of God in their lives. We strive to follow their example and imitate their actions, in hopes that we might also respond affirmatively when the Lord calls us (like the good son in Matt. 21:28- 32). We pray that we might continue to say “yes” to God not only in church but in every aspect of our lives, in personal encounters and even in our digital experiences, as the Second Vatican Council encouraged us to do in its document on social communications, “Inter Mirifica.” May the world hear our “yes” in whatever means we choose to communicate it!
