2013 Catholic Ministries
Annual Appeal Pledge Report
We are at 97% of our goal.
We have 544 donors who have pledged
$112,911 toward our goal of $116,529.
“The Lord Sustains His People”
The Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal provides
crucial funding to the Diocese of Joliet. These funds
help provide education, ministry and services that
sustain the people of God. From Catholic Charities to
Catholic Schools, to Religious Education, seminarian
education and vocations, money donated to the CMAA
helps support the work of our diocese.
Bishop Conlon has sent a letter and a campaign
brochure to past CMAA contributors asking that they
consider making a gift to the 2013 Catholic Ministries
Annual Appeal. We ask our parishioners who receive
this mailing to read it carefully and to prayerfully
consider a generous gift and/or pledge.
Please keep in mind that our parish receives a
50% rebate of all funds received over our parish goal.
We can then use this money to support our parish
priorities.
Thank you to all who have contributed
to the 2013 CMAA and to all who are
still paying their pledges.
Stewardship Prayer
Lord God, You alone are the source of every good
gift, of the vast array of our universe, and the mystery
of each human life. We praise you and thank You for
Your great power and Your tender, faithful love.
Everything we are and everything we have
is Your gift, and after having created us You have
given us into the keeping of Your Son, Jesus Christ.
Fill our minds with His truth and our hearts
with His love, that in His Spirit we may be bonded
together into a community of faith, a parish family,
a caring people.
In the Name and Spirit of Jesus, we commit
ourselves to be good stewards of the gifts entrusted
to us, to share our time, our talent, our material gifts
THE SOLEMNITY OF
THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD
LIVING
the
WORD
Sunday, May 12, 2013
TODAY'S FOCUS:
A COMFORT AND A CHALLENGE
The Feast of the Ascension opens our eyes to the
ongoing role of the risen Lord in our lives and deepens
our awareness of the reason we hold on to hope. No
matter what is happening in our world, the power of
God is at work to transform all creation.
• FIRST READING
As the Apostles were looking on, Jesus was lifted up (Acts
1;1-11).
This reading begins with a dedication of the Acts of the
Apostles to Theophilus (we do not know who Theophilus
was). He might be a royal official, a rich patron, or his
name symbolic (for “Theos” in Greek means “God” and
“phileo” means “to love,” so this book could be intended
for those who love God: Christians). The disciples ask Jesus
whether it is time for the Kingdom of God. His answer is
ambiguous, the kingdom was dawning, but not in the
manner that they expected. They thought it was going to
be a political entity, but this was not what Jesus had come
to establish. Jesus was the King who reigned in our hearts.
Acts gives an outline of the ministry of the early Church. It
would begin in Judea, and then extend to Samaria, and
finally reach to the ends of the earth. This prediction was
fulfilled when the Gospel reached Rome, the political ends
of the earth.
• SECOND READING
Christ has entered into heaven itself (Ephesians 1:17-23).
We are given two revelations. The first is that we will
know God the Father. This is not knowing about God, but
Saint Anthony Catholic Church
knowing God. The second is the glory to which God has
called us. This is our hope and the meaning of our lives.
The latter part of the reading speaks of how the Father
raised Jesus from the dead (for Jesus did not raise
Himself, He was raised by the Father). He is enthroned
and is above every principality, authority, power and
dominion. In the Greek world, that which was totally
spiritual was considered to be superior to the material.
The angels (here called principalities, etc.) were totally
spiritual, while Jesus was both spiritual and material.
• GOSPEL
As He blessed them, He was taken up to heaven (Luke 24:46
-53).
Jesus reminds the disciples that all that happened was
what had been foretold. This agrees with Luke’s emphasis
that God had a plan, and Jesus’ ministry was to fulfill that
plan. He then tells His disciples to remain in the city
(Jerusalem) until they will have been clothed in power
(until they will have received the gift of the Holy Spirit).
Jesus ascends into heaven from the Mount of Olives. That
mount was always associated with the end of time, and
the events of Jesus’ death, resurrection, ascension, and
the descent of the Spirit were the dawning of the
Kingdom of God.
• REFLECTION
The Ascension is not a feast that brings an end to Jesus’
work. Rather, it marks Jesus’ transition from a limited
sphere of activity — preaching, teaching, healing, living,
and dying within the geographical space of Israel and its
environs two thousand years ago — to the exalted
position of being in glory at the Father’s right hand,
interceding for us all, with “all things beneath His feet,”
having been given “as head over all things to the Church,
which is His body, the fullness of the One who fills all
things in every way” (Ephesians 1:23). This is a most
comforting vision of Jesus and His ongoing role of praying
for all of creation. The challenge comes from Luke’s two
versions of the Ascension, reminding us that Jesus was
not signaling “mission accomplished.” Note how Jesus
quickly dismisses the suggestion that now was the time
for Israel to be restored to a position of power as in the
good old days of King David. Instead, Jesus prepares them
for the next phase of God’s plan for the world: working
under the power of the Holy Spirit. A great deal of work
remains to be done. So… don’t stand around looking up.
Get moving! Are angels whispering for you to “move on”
and take up some work that invites your bearing witness
to Christ?
YEAR OF FAITH
DIOCESE OF JOLIET
CATECHISM CORNER
In this month traditionally dedicated to the
Queen of All Saints, we recall how Mary offered
the perfect act of faith (in Luke 1:26-38) as well
as how countless generations of holy men and
women after her have said “yes” to the call of
God in their lives. We strive to follow their
example and imitate their actions, in hopes that
we might also respond affirmatively when the
Lord calls us (like the good son in Matt. 21:28-
32). We pray that we might continue to say
“yes” to God not only in church but in every
aspect of our lives, in personal encounters and
even in our digital experiences, as the Second
Vatican Council encouraged us to do in its
document on social communications, “Inter
Mirifica.” May the world hear our “yes” in
whatever means we choose to communicate it!
MAY 12
“The Beatitudes reveal the goal of human
existence, the ultimate end of human acts: God
calls us to his own beatitude. This vocation is
addressed to each individual personally, but
also to the Church as a whole, the new people
made up of those who have accepted the
promise and live from it in faith.” (CCC, n. 1719)
MAY PRAYER INTENTION
For all those who are
single, divorced or widowed.

REFLECTION
In a Culture of Life we recognize
that miscarriage is the loss of an
actual child, who is a person. Every
reasonable effort should be made,
therefore, to take the bodily remains
of this child and commit them to the
earth by a proper memorial service
and burial. Such a witness is a
significant step to building a culture
of life.
PRAYER
Father, I entrust to You today all
children who died from miscarriage
and ask You to console their families.
Diocese of Joliet
Biblical Institute
Adds New Location!
Now three sites for
you to learn Scripture!
The acclaimed Biblical Institute of the Diocese of Joliet is
expanding this fall, opening a new site at Saints Peter and
Paul Parish (in Naperville). The two current sites, at Notre
Dame Parish (in Clarendon Hills) and St. Jude Parish (in
New Lenox), are also welcoming new students. If you
want to learn Scripture in a truly engaging manner, with a
teacher and from a solidly Catholic perspective, the Biblical
Institute promises you an enriching experience!
Come to one of the three preview events!
The first Preview Night is Tuesday, May 28 to meet
teachers and current students. For info call 815-838-6475
or www.dioceseofjoliet.org/reo (click on Biblical Institute).
People in our community are in crisis in record numbers. At
Catholic Charities the requests for food and rental
assistance are never-ending. For many, unemployment
benefits have been exhausted and the underemployed,
who were once working in professional jobs, are now
earning minimum wage and are unable to make ends
meet. Seniors who have worked all of their lives now have
to choose between paying their utility bills and buying
groceries. These people need your help now.
Will you be an angel to someone in need? For
every dollar that you donate to the Angel Fund at
Catholic Charities, two anonymous “angels” will
match it–dollar for dollar–up to $60,000!
Be an angel to someone who will have no where else
to turn if Catholic Charities doesn’t answer their cries, and
their prayers. Send a donation today. Donations can be
made online at catholiccharitiesjoliet.org or sent to Catholic
PRAYER FOR THE SPREAD
OF PERPETUAL ADORATION
Heavenly Father, increase our faith in the Real
Presence of Your Son Jesus Christ in the Holy
Eucharist. We are obliged to adore Him, to give
Him thanks and to make reparations for our sins.
We need Your peace in our hearts and among
nations. We need conversion from our sins and
the mercy of Your forgiveness. May we obtain
this through prayer and our union with our
Eucharistic Lord. Please send down the Holy
Spirit upon all people to give them the strength
and willingness to respond to the invitation to
Eucharistic Adoration. We ask this in the name of
Jesus our Lord. Amen.
