Chief Executive, DSMS, Sonepur welcomed the esteem chair and participants and shared the objectives to transfer the technology of Jaquard for better incremental income of the weavers and earn handsome income through cost effective productiveness. The esteem chair in the dais shared there experience for the betterment of the weavers community. In total 14 participants participated in the training programme from Birmaharajpur and Sonepur block. Out of which nine participants were trained on Jaquard and five participants on pre-weaving process. The major objective of the training was to make the participants the cost effective of improved technology and increase in productivity. Next is to peculate the learning to the village and accustomed with the improved technology in their loom. The course content of the training was to acknowledge the knowledge of spare parts and machinery implication of Jaquard, warping and winding machine. Thereafter set up with the frame loom with jacquard installation and setting of punch card design. After few days practice, a separate loom with design has been used for the production of the silk bomkei saree, silk dress material, cotton bomkei saree including SPS and emposs design. The <strong>training</strong> was successful with an outcome that<br />

participants are interested to install the improved technology in<br />

their loom. They opined that this technology increase the efficiency<br />

of the <strong>skill</strong>ed weavers in productivity.<br />

The participants suggested having an exposure visit to Tamil Nadu state where this<br />

practice is working full-fledged for the visi<strong>on</strong>ary bird view in practical sense, potentiality and<br />

marketability in Southern India.<br />

The women beneficiary those who were trained, earlier they were working as<br />

helping hand to their counter parts in winding thread manually.<br />

At present the learning from <strong>training</strong> enable them to build up<br />

their c<strong>on</strong>fidence and spare time in loom for <strong>weaving</strong>. They have<br />

an broader outlook of marketability, quality c<strong>on</strong>trol, rating of<br />

<strong>weaving</strong> and costing their product. They have an ec<strong>on</strong>omic idea<br />

<strong>on</strong> vegetable dying and chemical dying and utility in the<br />

market. The technology transfer in their mindset may add value<br />

in their ec<strong>on</strong>omies if further financial supports given to them for installati<strong>on</strong> of modernize<br />

technology.<br />

Besides this male counterpart have an learning<br />

of efficiency in Jacquard where more producti<strong>on</strong> and less time<br />

c<strong>on</strong>suming. This gave them an high value in less pricing of<br />

the product and better selling opportunity in the market.<br />

Somehow, new design <strong>development</strong> is learnt through product<br />

diversificati<strong>on</strong> in <strong>weaving</strong> salwar suit, shirting, stole which has<br />

greater potentiality in the demand market. This eye view has provided them handsome<br />

profit and idea to establishment of new technology transfer in their locality. But financial<br />

crunch could not drive beneficiary from desire to reality.<br />

Development Training <strong>on</strong> Folder Making for SC Women<br />

artisan under IGS.<br />

Situati<strong>on</strong> Analysis :-<br />

S<strong>on</strong>epur is <strong>on</strong>e of the pilgrim towns of the orissa state. Near<br />

about 100 nos temples are situated inside the town. Due to temple<br />

culture, traditi<strong>on</strong>al Heritage, the local art & craft have also fame in the<br />

world. S<strong>on</strong>epur was ruled by chauhan dynasty before independence & it<br />

was <strong>on</strong>e of the business centres in the western orissa. Local forest<br />

products, textiles, wood, paddy, Handicrafts were being transported to<br />

cuttack through river mahanadi. After enhancement of road transport and shifting of District<br />

Headquarter to Balangir, the river transportati<strong>on</strong> was closed. The<br />

mariner traditi<strong>on</strong>al artisans were affected and they have adapted<br />

other activity to maintain their livelihood. But some of traditi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

artisans are engaged in their own trade and struggle for their<br />

existence. Presently 200 nos artisan <strong>on</strong> Tie & Dye, Tussar Work,<br />

Appliqué, Terracotta are engaged for producti<strong>on</strong> & marketing.<br />

About the Appliqué craft of S<strong>on</strong>epur:-<br />

We know the S<strong>on</strong>epur town is famous for temples & textiles<br />

craft sector is also practiced in the theme linked with temple culture. The<br />

demands of the pilgrim like Chhatra, Flag, and Cloth with patchwork were<br />

met by these Appliqué artisans. But due to raw materials crisis it was<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly available during fare & festival related to the local culture.<br />

In the year 2007-08 NRDC, has taken initiative to revive the craft with the<br />

financial assistance of Directorate of H & CI, Bhubaneswar & local DIC,<br />

S<strong>on</strong>epur. NRDC has formed 2 nos SHGs by taking 30 SC women of<br />

s<strong>on</strong>epur town. One Skill up gradati<strong>on</strong> programme was c<strong>on</strong>ducted for 6<br />

m<strong>on</strong>ths to pull the Skill of the SHG artisan under two state levels MCM.<br />

Need base hand tools & margin m<strong>on</strong>ey was also supported to the SHG<br />

for their post producti<strong>on</strong>. After completi<strong>on</strong> of Skill Development Training<br />

the artisan have started producti<strong>on</strong> in <strong>on</strong>e platform and attended exhibiti<strong>on</strong> inside & out<br />

side of the state facilitated by DSMS.<br />

Producti<strong>on</strong> Diversificati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> Appliqué craft & Skill Development <strong>on</strong> folder<br />

making<br />

The women SHGs have faced problem in c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with producti<strong>on</strong> & marketing,<br />

which was evaluated by different agency like DIC, <strong>Subarnapur</strong>, ORMAS,<br />

NABARD, and KVIC & DC (H). Due to poor designer they are unable to<br />

compete with other artisans in the state. To increase their income<br />

source there was a brain storming this product <strong>development</strong>. The<br />

matter was placed before the district administrati<strong>on</strong> to search to<br />

appropriate mechanism to eradicate the problem.<br />

Management of waste materials & folder making<br />

Supply of tools & Kits<br />

Taking into c<strong>on</strong>siderati<strong>on</strong> DSMS / DRDA has come forward and<br />

placed an acti<strong>on</strong> plan to introduce for making of folders by using waste<br />

Handloom clothes for 3 m<strong>on</strong>ths. Similarly Bed sheet & other stitching<br />

products are being developed by the artisan under a <strong>skill</strong>ed MCM from<br />

Pipli, Puri district.<br />

The artisans have small hand tools by which they are unable to work<br />

comfortably. To produce good quality folders as per the trend of the<br />

market, new improved sew machines, stitching machine were<br />

supplied to the both SHGs for large scale producti<strong>on</strong>. The artisans<br />

have also c<strong>on</strong>tributed 10% of total cost of tools & machine. The<br />

<strong>training</strong> programme was organized at CFC of DSMS, <strong>Subarnapur</strong> from<br />

02/01/2009 to 05/04/2009 for a period of 3 m<strong>on</strong>ths. The artisans<br />

actively produced 400 nos folders, 24 nos bed sheets. After the<br />

completi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>training</strong> the finished products was handed over to the SHG for their test<br />

marketing. Further DSMS has taken steps to prepare digital presentati<strong>on</strong> under the<br />

guidance of ORMAS, Bhubaneswar and present it to corporate sector, other <strong>development</strong>al<br />

agencies and MoRD for further order. The cost analysis was also acknowledged to the<br />

participants for each product for future business plan.<br />

SALESMANSHIP.<br />

The <strong>training</strong> was inaugurated by Sri K. K. Jha, Z<strong>on</strong>al<br />

Manager, ORMAS, Sambalpur. Sri Souravamaya Das extended<br />

hearty welcome to the participants. The participants selected<br />

were those who have participated in various exhibiti<strong>on</strong>s inside<br />

and outside state in various activities like terracotta,<br />

handloom, appliqué, clay dolls, fabric painting & pattachitra<br />

from different blocks.<br />

Objectives:<br />

The <strong>training</strong> of rural entrepreneurship is designed to sub serve the following objectives,<br />

1. To import basic knowledge of rural entrepreneur about the marketing strategy and<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sumer behaviour.<br />

2. To assists the rural entrepreneur to functi<strong>on</strong> more effectively in his present positi<strong>on</strong><br />

A three day residential <strong>training</strong> <strong>on</strong> marketing & salesmanship was organized by DSMS,<br />

S<strong>on</strong>epur sp<strong>on</strong>sored by DRDA, <strong>Subarnapur</strong> under SGSY.<br />

Day-I<br />

The programme begins with brain storming to know<br />

each other and develop cordial atmosphere. Sri Jha in his<br />

inaugural address highlighted that Marketing and<br />

Salesmanship are two different entities and we need to<br />

identify the issues and mitigate them in order to have<br />

increase income by way of profits which ultimately would<br />

result in gainful employment and improved livelihoods. He<br />

menti<strong>on</strong>ed that this 3 days programme would focus <strong>on</strong> sharpening the thoughts and<br />

techniques of the participant’s in order to achieve the objectives of the artisans and<br />

weavers.<br />

Sri Sourav explained the participants about the structure of the programme schedule<br />

and introduced the resource pers<strong>on</strong>s who will be taking forward the sessi<strong>on</strong>s for the 3 days.<br />

Sri P. K. Dash in order to make the sessi<strong>on</strong>s participatory, started with an exercise for<br />

making the participants feel that they will have to be involved in the 3 days programme.<br />

Thereafter the core sessi<strong>on</strong>s started: discussi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> “what is an enterprise and what<br />

is a business”, customer needs was also discussed and made clear that needs differ from<br />

area to area and also the category of customers i.e. upper class, middle class and lower<br />

class. Group Discussi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> customer needs according to area was d<strong>on</strong>e. Each group was<br />

given an area. The areas were Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur, Kalahandi, Delhi & Mumbai. Each<br />

group did their presentati<strong>on</strong>s in which it was clear that customer needs differed from place<br />

to place.<br />

This was followed by understanding what a business plan is and why it is necessary.<br />

Again an exercise was d<strong>on</strong>e in which groups made a business plan and presented the same.<br />

Further sales attitude and salesmanship was discussed and in order to make the topic get<br />

internalized by the participants a role play exercise was made in acti<strong>on</strong>. One group was<br />

salesman in a stall in an exhibiti<strong>on</strong> and other group as customers. The play came out with<br />

the traits of a sales pers<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The day ended with a feedback in which the days sessi<strong>on</strong>s sores. The Sessi<strong>on</strong>-I<br />

remarked 20 as good and 5 stated fair. For sessi<strong>on</strong>-II 17 rated good and 8 rated fair.<br />

Day-II<br />

Risk and Stress management was discussed: It was stated that risk are of 2<br />

categories i.e. Ec<strong>on</strong>omic and natural/ manmade. An<br />

exercise was c<strong>on</strong>ducted and participants came out with a<br />

list of risks for both the categories.<br />

Sri Kamlendu discussed <strong>on</strong> issues at exhibiti<strong>on</strong>s and<br />

market linkage and trade c<strong>on</strong>tracts, value chains and also<br />

different types of markets & trade.<br />

The Collector cum Chairman, DSMS<br />

suggested the participants to grow prosperously with<br />

higher income and quality of life. After post lunch<br />

participants were made to make a survey and<br />

present the same. This was an classroom exercise since<br />

it was not possible to go for real survey locally. The<br />

outcome was that the market and the customer needs<br />

were very important i.e. product, place, pricing and promoti<strong>on</strong>. In additi<strong>on</strong> packaging was<br />

also highlighted.<br />

The sec<strong>on</strong>d feedback scores 19 good, 4 fair, 2 poor respectively in first half and in<br />

sec<strong>on</strong>d half it was 15 good, 8 fair and 2 poor respectively.<br />

Day-III<br />

The day started with Sri B. N. Dash <strong>on</strong> pricing and<br />

quality c<strong>on</strong>trol. He elaborated the c<strong>on</strong>cept of 4Ps. He also<br />

quoted examples of planning in advance for the producers<br />

when they attend different exhibiti<strong>on</strong>s. He also elaborated<br />

the need to diversify their products into utility items.<br />

Sri Ravi critically explained the cluster approach<br />

c<strong>on</strong>cept with focus <strong>on</strong> SHG’s and the need to have a federati<strong>on</strong>. The advantages were also<br />

discussed i.e. bank loans, increased volume of products for sale etc. The norms of a SHG<br />

was also discussed i.e. bye-law, different types of records and bank loans.<br />

Sri Sourav explained the need for marketing SHGs and federati<strong>on</strong>s. It was stressed<br />

that strengthening of SHGs was the utmost requirement. It was also explained that<br />

customer needs keep changing; therefore it is necessary to diversify our products into utility<br />

products i.e. home furnishing, file folders and other utility products like bamboo sofa, value<br />
