St Paul’s High School
Dear Friends,
With a year known globally for its financial turbulence as the backdrop, the following pages are a clear
reflection of the steadfast generosity of our St Paul’s High School Community. Outlining the past year’s
fundraising activities is our way of demonstrating our appreciation and our saying thank you to
everyone who chose to help us become the community we are.
In keeping with the mission of the school, your generous contributions support our commitment to
providing an unsurpassed level of excellence in Jesuit education and developing true Men for Others.
These pages provide a collective account of the multi-varied activities at St Paul’s that are simply not
possible without your generous contributions. Annually our bursary program grows incrementally
allowing the school to continue the tradition of never refusing entry to qualifying students based on
financial constraints. The growth of our general bursary, named bursaries and Adopt-a-Student bursary
programs substantiate the commitment of our community to provide a quality Jesuit education for all
Bursary applicants. I invite you to explore these pages and to contemplate the difference you have
made in the lives of approximately 80 current students and scores of alumni.
As our school community continues to grow, so do the needs of our physical plant. The past three
summers have been witness to an unprecedented number of renovations at the school that are a way
of acknowledging past generations and anticipating future generations of Crusaders. As funding for
capital projects must come from within, future major expansions will rely heavily on continued and
perhaps unprecedented support from current and past parents, alumni and friends of the school.
On behalf of the Jesuit Board of Members, Board of Directors, Administration, Faculty, Staff and most
importantly, the students of St Paul’s High School, thank you for your unwavering generosity and
support.
In Christ,
MISSION
St Paul’s High School is missioned by the Jesuits in English Canada to educate students as whole persons to
become Men for Others and so assist the Church in building the Kingdom of God.
VISION
A St Paul’s education is based upon Ignatian pedagogy derived from the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius.
rough the commitment and efforts of all members of the learning community—students, parents, staff,
alumni, friends and board members—our students develop into competent, conscientious and compassionate
Men for Others who dedicate their lives to leadership through service and cooperation with others in order
to praise, reverence, and serve God. Our education forms graduates to become lifelong learners who are open
to growth, intellectually competent, loving, religious, and committed to doing justice.
As a Jesuit Catholic school, St Paul’s aims at academic excellence and the growth of the whole person in its
work of preparing young men for university and subsequent leadership in the community. In an atmosphere
of Ignatian care and concern for each person, the School challenges students with a well-rounded academic
program and a wide variety of extra- and co-curricular activities designed to facilitate healthy spiritual,
intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development. Following Jesus Christ, the Man for Others, our
learning community is committed to love, faith, peace, and justice in the world. St Paul’s has an active
pastoral program that includes liturgies, retreats, service experiences, Christian Life Communities, and spiritual
counselling.
St Paul’s is committed to fostering personal responsibility and social justice. To that end, the School strives to
ensure that all qualified applicants who are accepted can attend regardless of their ability to pay tuition. is
is made possible through the generous contributions of alumni and friends who allow the School to continue
to build its bursary program. St Paul’s commitment to social justice is also reflected in its practice of welcoming
diversity, respecting the religious and cultural backgrounds of all and its cooperation with the broader
Manitoba community through service and charitable outreach programs.
DONATIONS AND DESIGNATIONS
Each year St Paul’s High School conducts a number of different fundraising appeals and events. The annual
Tribute Dinner and Alumni Golf Tournaments are examples of school events with a fundraising component. The
Annual Giving campaign and Crusader Raffle program are examples of ongoing programs that appeal to members
of the St Paul’s community and to the community at large. The Parent Guild holds numerous events and activities
that raise funds in support of student activities; the annual Fashion Show is the largest of these events. The growth
of the St Paul’s Legacy Society establishes future planned gifts in support of the school. The Donations table and
chart below reflect donation revenue by category of appeal or event in 2009.
Individual, corporate or foundation gifts are often designated by the donors for the support of specific programs
at St Paul’s. Recent years have seen an increase in demand for Bursary assistance. The St Paul’s community has
responded very well to this need by designating 72% of donations to Named Bursaries or the General Bursary
Fund. The Donor Designation table and chart below reflects the wishes of our donors in 2009.
Giving back to the community is one of our fundamental teachings and
it is this generous support that allows St Paul’s to continue providing students
with an outstanding spiritual, academic and extra-curricular foundation.
Members of the St Paul’s Legacy Society have made an active decision to
recognize the value of a St Paul’s education. They have pledged support
in their will as a means of making a perpetual gift in service to the students
for generations to come.
You, too, can be a member of the Legacy Society. A bequest in your will
is your statement about the importance of quality education in the Jesuit
tradition for future generations. Members of the Legacy Society include
ADOPT-A-STUDENT
In recent years, alumni or groups of alumni and friends have stepped forward to “adopt” a student as
a means of giving back to the community that gave so much to them. ey have either established
Named Bursaries which fully endow one student each year at St Paul’s or they make annual contributions
equal to the costs of tuition in a given year.
St Paul’s is actively seeking benefactors who see the value in and are financially able to adopt students
for the duration of their time at St Paul’s. e number of generous individuals that have contributed
to the program has grown steadily since the inception of the initiative.
e current cost of fully endowing an Adopt-a-Student Bursary is $125,000. e current cost of a full
adoption for the 2009–2010 academic year is $6,170. Named Bursaries at St Paul’s High School, with
a principal balance of $125,000 or greater, receive a special distinction as an Adopt-a-Student Bursary.
BURSARY PROGRAM
Bursary Funds are an essential aspect of a Jesuit education at St Paul’s High School ensuring accessibility for
all qualified applicants. e Bursary Fund is comprised of all donations to any bursary, both named and unnamed,
the funds of which are invested annually in keeping with the St Paul’s High School Investment Policy.
Today, the cost of educating one student at St Paul’s is approximately $12,800. is amount comes from three
main sources: tuition ($6,170), government funding and endowment funds in support of the Bursary Program.
In the current school year, 79 students, 14% of the student body, received financial aid totaling $272,520, an
average gift of $3,450.
In order to keep pace with current and future needs, St Paul’s must have a growing Bursary Fund. e current
endowment level sits at approximately $4.2 million. In order for us to meet the annual tuition assistance
requests of our families, an additional $4 million is required.
THE LIFE OF A BUILDING
Of course it is more than just a building. St Paul’s High School has stood on the current grounds on
Grant Avenue for almost 50 years. e building was a national award-winning design by alumnus,
Mel Michener ’47, when it was designed and constructed in 1963. e home of St Paul’s High School
is highlighted by wide open hallways and exterior windows in nearly every room allowing for good
natural light, even in the Eddie Cass Gymnasium.
Now, almost 50 years later, it is filled with history, traditions and the memories of the thousands of
alumni, faculty and of the Jesuits who have entered the doors and made their contribution through the
decades.
e building has aged well, but as with most things, the time comes for rejuvenation and renovation.
Such was the case this past summer when the school completed the final phase of a major asbestos
removal and energy efficiency upgrade program.
e past three years have been the busiest in the school’s history for renovation projects and, with the
work now completed, St Paul’s has laid the groundwork for the next 50 years on Grant Avenue.
e renovations are a part of the School Improvement-Strategic Planning process approved by the
Board of Directors and Jesuit Board of Members and which St Paul’s President, Fr Alan Fogarty SJ,
has been instrumental in shaping and effective in implementing. During the summer of 2009, the
project culminated with the final removal of asbestos from all remaining hallways and classrooms and
the installation of new ceiling tiles and energy efficient lighting.
OUR STUDENTS
Men for Others
A Jesuit education seeks to transform how youth look at themselves and other human beings and at the
social systems and societal structures in the world around them. To foster this transformation, St Paul’s
offers retreat programs, spiritual leadership programs, religious education and a Christian Service
program in which students contribute more than 10,000 hours of community service each year.
University Bound
Approximately 95% of St Paul’s graduates attend post-secondary studies. In the past four graduating
current student activities and programs and by supporting the
