CONCERN Governance
G. Thompson Bell, III
Glenn J. Hillegass
Paul D. Rieger, MSW
From the Board President
This has been a difficult time in the nonprofit sector, as it has been in most other
sectors of our economy. But what has sustained CONCERN through this tumultuous
time has been keeping the children, youth, and families we serve at the center of our
decision-making. We continue to be a client-driven organization. From our foster
parents to direct care staff to supervisory and administrative staff, the attitude continues
to be not how to get it done, but how well can we get it done.
We will miss Glenn Hillegass. It is Glenn’s 33 years of vision, dedication, and
compassion that has created the organization CONCERN is today and laid the
foundation for what it will be tomorrow. We can not thank Glenn enough for his service.
At the same time we welcome Paul Rieger, and the experience and personal strengths he
brings to the position of executive director. We are confident that, under his leadership,
the future is bright for CONCERN and those it serves.
From the Past Executive Director
It has been my honor and privilege to serve as CONCERN’s Executive Director since
1990 and, as one of the agency’s founders, to witness the growth and diversity of our
dynamic agency over the past 33 years. However change is inevitable in the life cycle
of any organization and I am confident that under the leadership of our new Executive
Director, Paul Rieger, CONCERN will continue to prosper. With careful planning
and purposeful communication, the transition of leadership has been very successful.
CONCERN has embraced the transition as a time of opportunity and not uncertainty.
None of CONCERN’s success would be possible without the dedication and resiliency
of our staff and foster parents, a committed Board of Directors, and the support of our
individual and corporate donors.
I will deeply miss the working relationships I have had the privilege of experiencing
during my career, but I am also looking forward to retirement and spending more time
with my wonderful wife JoAnn and our family. Best wishes to all of you.
From the Executive Director
I thank Glenn Hillegass for his tireless dedication to CONCERN for over three
decades. Under Glenn’s leadership CONCERN evolved into a resilient agency focused
on providing the highest quality services.
I am very humbled by the responsibility forwarded to me as CONCERN’s new
executive director. CONCERN is a mature agency with a proud mission backed by
a strong fiscal conscience. Together we will build upon this success by enhancing the
current operations and exploring new opportunities.
About CONCERN
Where We Have Been
CONCERN is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) dynamic human services organization dedicated
to providing placement and treatment services to children and their families. Founded
in 1978, CONCERN began as a pioneer of intensive foster care, believing that children
placed into care should live in a traditional family setting in the community, rather than in a
residential or institutional setting. Since this time, CONCERN has been at the forefront of
innovative programs to meet the individual needs of the child.
Since 1978, CONCERN has served over 14,000 children and youth in placement services
including over 1,500 into adoptive families. Through 16 service sites throughout eastern
Pennsylvania and Maryland CONCERN offers a growing array of adoption, counseling,
foster care, and residential programs. Each day our placement services impact the lives of
over 400 children and youth. Each year our counseling services touch the lives of more than
3,000 individuals through a continuum of services.
Where We Are Going
In April 2011, CONCERN’s Executive Director Glenn Hillegass announced his retirement
after 21 very successful years. Glenn has been CONCERN’s steady hand, the consensus
builder who brings the ultimate “we not I” attitude, and the leader who leads by example
and constantly encourages others to not only speak their minds, but also to have open minds.
Glenn leaves a legacy of sound financial management, program and geographic expansion,
and, above all, the respect and admiration of his peers, colleagues, foster parents, and the
thousands of children who came through CONCERN under his watch.
Choosing the appropriate replacement for the role of Executive Director was a task not
taken lightly. We needed to find an individual who not only possessed the experience and
the expertise, but also the dedication to our core values in serving the
most vulnerable in our society and to lead CONCERN in the
ever-changing child welfare field and that person was Paul Rieger.
As CONCERN’s Director of Behavioral Health Services, Paul
comes to the position well qualified with his own track record
of success and ability to build a business. For the past 10
years, Paul has been able to take advantage of market
opportunities in previously underserved
areas of Pennsylvania as well as being
instrumental in creating new and unique
programs to serve those individuals.
It is with great sadness to say good-bye to
Glenn and with great pride
and anticipation that we
welcome Paul.
Programs
Foster Care Services
Intensive Foster Care is a community-based program
for children and youth whose needs cannot be
met in their own families and therefore require
out-of-home placements. Children in this program
may exhibit significant behavioral problems,
and/or varying degrees of social or emotional
dysfunctions. CONCERN’s specially trained
foster parents create a family-like environment,
which improves the child’s opportunities for more
normalized daily living experiences.
Intermediate Foster Care provides out-of-home
placement services for children and youth
who generally do not require more intensive
interventions such as behavioral health services.
Medical Foster Care provides homes for children
with acute physical, emotional or mental
disabilities as an alternative to hospitalization
or institutionalization. CONCERN identifies
particular foster parents who are capable of
meeting the child’s special needs and who are
trained in the specific medical condition(s) of the
child. This program is referred to as Medically
Fragile Foster Care in the State of Maryland.
Mother/Baby Foster Care is designed to provide
support to an adolescent or expectant mother
in her efforts to develop a good parent/child
relationship, while focusing on the competencies of
parenting skills, child development, sexual safety,
and independent living. Mothers enrolled in this
program must establish a routine to address her
infant’s needs, provide stimulating development,
and educational activities for her infant, coordinate
and arrange medical care for the infant, establish
a budget to practice household management and
enroll in an educational program or be gainfully
employed.
Adoption/Permanency
Services
Foster/Adopt and Adoption programs are designed
to improve permanency outcomes for children
in foster care. As an adoption agency licensed by
the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare
and affiliated with the Statewide Adoption and
Permanency Network (SWAN) and the North
American Council on Adoptable Children
(NACAC), CONCERN is committed to helping
children find a permanent family they can call their
own. Services the department provides include
Child Profiles, Child Preparation Services, Child
Specific Recruitment Services, Placement Services,
Family Preparation and Profiles, and Finalization
Services. Our staff works with families who wish
to adopt their foster child or a child placed through
a kinship placement, as well as with families who
wish to be matched with a waiting child.
Residential
Services
Life Skills Programs,
including Community
Life Skills Residential
Program and Mentor
Foster Care are
programs targeted to
adjudicated, dependent
or delinquent youth
ages 16 to 21 who
have a demonstrated
difficulty functioning
within systems,
offering communitybased,
supervised
living arrangements.
These programs are
structured to help

youth learn and practice necessary basic living
skills and gradually assume the responsibility
associated with independent living. The program
stresses behavioral responsibility, personal
awareness, continuing basic academic education,
vocational exploration and employment, life skills
development and post-placement planning.
CONCERN Treatment Unit for Boys (CTUB) are
staff-secure, residential facilities for adolescent
males. The goal of this program is to change
the mindsets and behavior patterns of the youth
so they will be able to function appropriately
in society and will return to the community
as healthy, productive citizens. The program
provides daily opportunities for emotional,
social, educational, and physical growth. This
not only minimizes the likelihood of continued
negative behavior, but also prepares the youth for
responsible social living.
Counseling Services
Outpatient Counseling is provided on a confidential
outpatient basis to children and adults from the
community, as well as to clients in CONCERN’s
care. CONCERN Counseling Services is a licensed
psychiatric outpatient program, also offering
Employee Assistance Programs for large and small
businesses.
Behavioral Health Rehabilitative Services (BHRS)
is an individualized, collaborative approach with
the goal of maintaining the child in the home
and community whenever possible. Services
include psychiatric/psychological evaluations,
behavioral specialist consultation, mobile therapy,
therapeutic staff support, and case management
services.
Summer Therapeutic Activities Program (STAP)
is designed as an eight-week summer program
providing therapeutic and recreational activities
for children with emotional and behavioral
challenges, striving to improve their quality of life.
Through the use of age appropriate activities, the
program will encourage the development of social
skills, coping skills, problem solving and improved
self-esteem.
Family Based Mental Health Services (FBMH)
is designed for children, adolescents, and their
families. It is an intensive team-delivered service
provided in the home and community, designed to
integrate mental health treatment, family support
services and case management. The goal of FBMH
treatment is to help children and adolescents with
a serious mental illness remain with their family in
the community.
Community Residential Rehabilitation (CRR)
provides individualized community-based
treatment in a 24-hour day structured therapeutic
environment in a family setting. This program
is designed for individuals ages 5 – 18 who have
significant mental health issues and cannot be
maintained in their own homes. This program also
provides a variety of clinical, case management,
counseling, and educational services to support the
clients’ needs.
Telephone Crisis Intervention Service is a 24-hour a
day/seven day a week crisis intervention service
that is designed to improve or resolve precipitating
stress. Services are provided to adults, children,
adolescents and their families who exhibit acute
problems of disturbed thought, behavior, mood or
social relationships. This service provides rapid
response to crisis situations which threaten the
well-being of individuals and/or others.
Partial Hospitalization Program provides three
hours of planned treatment programming per
day in the form of group, individual and family
therapy, as well as psychiatric and psychological
services to clients in grades kindergarten through
sixth. An educational component of the program
is provided by the local school district and
CONCERN Counseling Services provides the
mental health treatment component. This program
allows an environment where children have an
opportunity to continue their regular education
placement, as well as receive appropriate mental
health services.
CONCERN News
Ninth Annual Life Skills Seminar a Success
With “aging-out” of the foster care system looming, more than
40 young men and women attended the ninth annual Life Skills
Seminar on July 14, 2010, at Arcadia University in Glenside,
Pennsylvania. Sponsored through a grant from the Morgan
Stanley Foundation – Philadelphia Branch, teenage clients
from CONCERN’s Southeast Regional Office and CONCERN
Treatment Unit for Boys – Coatesville and Lehighton Campuses
attended.
This day-long event focused on the independent living and
educational needs of the teens by providing informative,
interesting and fun sessions for participants. Employment related
Mark Zumoff, television voice of the
Philadelphia 76ers, answers questions
during the Life Skills Seminar
sessions ranged from “Dressing for Success” during the job interview process to career opportunities in
the sciences, writing, the Peace Corps and the Armed Forces while educational related sessions included
financial planning and responsibility and a tour of the Arcadia Campus.
From Sandee Burns, CONCERN Director of Human Resources saying, “First impressions do count” to
Staff Sergeant Samantha Johnson of the United States Air Force stating, “While the benefits and travel
are great, the job can be dangerous and exciting as well,” everyone listened attentively and avidly asked
questions.
Callie Phillips, a former CONCERN client, spoke about the realities of being in foster care, but through
self-motivation, he has achieved his dream of going to college. Callie said, “Don’t stop in high school or
you will be selling yourself short.” While college and parties are fun, he emphasized that finishing his
education was his main goal because he did not want a life on the streets.
Marc Zumoff, the television voice of the Philadelphia 76ers, delivered an attention-getting and
inspirational keynote message. Mr. Zumoff stated, “I grew up a nothing and now look at what I am
doing. I had a dream. What is your dream? Whatever you want to do, it doesn’t come easy. You have to
believe in yourself. You have to dare to be different.” He emphasized hard work, always learning, meeting
everyone you could, opening your own doors, and as a result good things will happen.
Bucknell Students Support CONCERN
Students in the Management 101 program at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA combined education
and philanthropy recently by producing and selling BU tank tops as an educational business project.
Proceeds from the neon blue and orange tank tops will benefit CONCERN’s Susquehanna Valley
Regional Office. In addition to donating the funds to CONCERN, students collected gently used clothing
and toys for children in care and hosted a party for CONCERN clients.

CONCERN Honors Foster
Parents
The month of May is National Foster Care Month.
Each May CONCERN honors its foster parents at
each of our foster care sites through recognition
events. Foster parents play an integral part of
CONCERN as well as in the lives of the children in
their homes.
Foster parents are often underappreciated and a
simple thank you is simply not enough, so once a
year we set aside a day to honor their commitment to
children and youth.
With over 300 foster homes, CONCERN takes
much pride in its foster parents, the valuable work
they perform and the services they provide. These
recognition events provide staff and foster parents
the opportunity to step out of that professional
relationship, share a meal at a nice restaurant
or banquet hall, and simply enjoy one another’s
company.
We thank our foster parents for all they do for the
children who need them.
Family Realizes Dream
Just one week after finalizing the adoption of
their son, Alison and Michael Moyer told their
heartwarming story of expanding their family in
The Express Times’ “Non-Profit Spotlight” on
CONCERN.
As Alison stated in the article, “We only get a day
or two in a lifetime as incredible as the day we first
met Alex. Another of these incredible life-changing
moments is when we officially became a family - not
because we share the same genes, but because by
God’s design we share an unconditional love for one
another ... This is our dream come true!”
In addition to sharing the story of the Moyer’s
adoption, the article featured CONCERN’s
programs and services, including foster care,
adoption and counseling services.
CONCERN Training Goes
Online
Pam Berg, Training Administrator, has
been busy launching CONCERN’s on-line
training program. With the assistance of
Jane Zettlemoyer, Development Department
Assistant, current PowerPoint trainings have
been converted to a user-friendly format and
uploaded to CONCERN’s website (www.
concern4kids.org) to enable staff and foster
parents to complete many of their required
trainings on-line.
Training courses are located behind a password
protected page of CONCERN’s website and
can be accessed from the homepage by clicking
on the link to mandatory training. User name
and password can be obtained by contacting the
training representative.
At the end of the Specialized trainings, users
are required to complete a short quiz. A score
of 70% or higher must be achieved in order to
print a certificate. If the quiz is not passed, the
trainee is directed back to the beginning of the
training to review the information contained in
the training once again.
Currently most staff are obtaining the majority
of their training by this means. It allows
people to complete the training from their desk
without clerical assistance and enables some
supplemental staff the flexibility of being able to
complete trainings on their home computer.
As of late January, a number of Foster Parent
trainings were made available on CONCERN’s
website which enables foster parents to
complete some of their required trainings from
home. These trainings are accessible from any
computer that has internet access including dial
up connection.
Pam stated, “So far very few problems have been
reported and foster parents and staff seem to be
very pleased with this.”
CONCERN Counseling Services Reorganization
CONCERN Counseling Services continues to
grow and diversify. At the beginning of 2011,
the CONCERN Counseling Services Program
underwent a reorganization. This reorganization
was planned to accommodate the growth and
diversity that Counseling Services has experienced
over the past several years.
The Counseling Services Program was divided
into two regions - Eastern Region and North
Central Region. The Eastern Region covers
services in Bethlehem, Wyomissing and Fleetwood,
Pennsylvania. The North Central Region covers
counseling services in Lewisburg, Wellsboro and
Towanda, Pennsylvania.
CTUB - Lehighton Honored
CONCERN Treatment Unit for Boys – Lehighton Campus was recognized by Safe Kids Carbon County
during the group’s annual award and appreciation luncheon. During the ceremony, Carbon County
Commissioner Wayne Nothstein, who is a member of Safe Kids, presented the award to representatives
of CONCERN. “This group has always been there when we need help,” he said. “They are very
community oriented.”
Foster Care Client Speaks at Conference
Complan P., 18, a client with the Maryland Regional
Office, represented CONCERN youth at the 2010
Maryland System of Care Conference.
The conference addressed topics reflecting the
initiatives to improve the system of care for children,
youth and families. Workshops for youth included
understanding trauma, advocacy, understanding
Maryland government and the legislative process as
well as starting youth-run support groups.
Complan P., a senior in a Maryland high school’s
Visual Performing Arts Program, makes beautiful art
which has already been displayed in several galleries.
She plans to attend college next fall and ultimately
hopes to earn a Master’s degree.
Included in this reorganization was the creation of
four new positions. These include Eastern Region
Director, North Central Region Director, Office
Supervisor for the Eastern Region, and Office
Supervisor for the North Central Region positions.
In addition to the above office sites, services
are provided in many school districts across the
eastern half of the Commonwealth. The newly
implemented Community Residential Rehabilitation
Program is currently being operated from
Wyomissing, Wellsboro and the Northeast Regional
Offices. Other new developments include telepsychiatry
and crisis services at Towanda.
You Are A Star
On June 24, 2011, the Southeast Regional Office hosted its first-ever “You Are A Star” event to
recognize and celebrate the recent year’s accomplishments of the children and youth in care. With
a room filled to capacity with approximately 70 guests, including clients, foster parents, staff,
volunteers, and county workers, there were cheers and even a few tears as the awards were presented.
With an emphasis on recognizing that each child has individual talents, awards were given in
the following categories: Achievement (for general achievement), Art, Attendance, Basketball,
Friendship, Leadership, Music, Wrestling, Sportsmanship, Scholar Athlete, and Stars of Excellence
(for outstanding general progress).
In addition, academic awards were presented for Academic Excellence, Honor Roll, Mathematics,
Elementary School, Middle School, and High School Stars for outstanding improvement and effort,
as well as Elementary School, Middle School, and High School Super Stars for those students who
displayed academic excellence.
The final group of awards went to the recent high school graduates and a CONCERN STAR
(Support Teens After Release) Fund award was presented as well. In all, 63 awards were presented to
51 individuals.
State Commission Selects CTUB Programs for Award
CONCERN Treatment Units for Boys (CTUB) - Coatesville and Lehighton Campuses were selected by
the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency and the National Center for Juvenile Justice
to receive technical assistance through the Quality Improvement Initiative (Qii) for “Evaluations” for the
upcoming fiscal year.
The Qii aims to help Pennsylvania providers assess how well their interventions match up with
recognized best practice standards and to identify areas where delivery of service can be improved. Only
40 providers were accepted from across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
As part of the project, both CTUB sites will assemble Qii teams with representation from across the
organization, including administration, managers, line staff and clinical staff. All participants will
receive on-site training, and help provide assessments, develop and implement a quality improvement
plan, and review progress monthly. In addition, an independent assessment by the National Center for
Juvenile Justice will provide objective verification that the intervention aligns with the best practices of
an effective delinquency intervention.
CONCERN is not solely a provider of social services to children,
youth and families. CONCERN is also a part of the economic
fabric in each of the communities we serve by creating and
maintaining jobs for local residents as well as purchasing goods
and services in these communities. CONCERN’s direct economic
impact typically exceeds $22 million per year while its indirect
economic impact typically exceeds $55 million per year. Simply,
CONCERN is committed to being a vital entity in the many
communities we serve and is proud of the local impact and positive
change our staff, foster parents, clients and residents bring to these
communities.

Economic Impact
The methodology used in completing CONCERN’s Local Economic Impact
Report is a basic Input-Output Model. The multiplier shown for use with this
study is a relatively conservative 2.5 times. This multiplier was derived from
various federal government economic impact studies. These studies used
varying multipliers based on region and spending categories.
For additional information on the methodology as well as specific site
information, please see the complete report, available by calling (610) 944-0445
or on CONCERN’s website, www.concern4kids.org.
Strategic Planning
Since 1994 strategic planning has become an integral part of CONCERN’s planning process.
This process has been particularly important during these uncertain economic times. Each year
annual goals are set based upon established three to five year long-term goals. CONCERN
is committed to an inclusionary process where all members of the organization have the
opportunity to express input. For the 2010-2011 fiscal year six goal areas were identified. The
following are those areas, along with a representation of goals from each area that were achieved.
For more specific information on the strategic planning goals, visit CONCERN’s website at
www.concern4kids.org.
Corporate Planning
CONCERN will contract with an outside
consultant to develop a plan for electronic
archiving of agency files and integrate that plan
with agency operations and the FY 2012 business
planning process.
The Quality Assurance Committee will develop a
written internal audit procedure for CONCERN
foster care client and foster parent files.
Counseling Services
CONCERN will document and implement
research-based programming for autistic youth
in both in the Behavioral Health Rehabilitation
Services and Summer Therapeutic Activities
Program.
CONCERN will develop a comprehensive guide
to the private insurances currently accepted by
Counseling Services.
Development, Fundraising, and
Public Policy
CONCERN will seek to enhance employee giving
to include personal giving as well as develop a plan
for furthering CONCERN’s name recognition in
the community with community outreach efforts.
CONCERN will better promote ourselves as a
charity from within our individual sites by making
each service site more “CONCERN/charity/
child friendly” by enhancing the appearance in the
public areas in each of our sites.
Foster Care and Adoption
CONCERN will adopt a strengths based
approach in working with children and their
families; staff and resource families will be
trained to implement the approach.
CONCERN will partner with referring
counties to find innovative ways to access,
monitor and increase safety, stability and wellbeing
for children and youth while placed in
out-of-home care.
Maryland Programs
The Maryland regional Office will develop
and implement a program that will address the
needs of youth in transition to independence
utilizing the Ansell-Casey Life Skills
Assessment Tool.
The Maryland Regional Office will continue
to strive toward increased cultural competency,
both with staff and foster parents, to meet the
needs of the increasingly diverse referrals.
Residential Placement
Numerous state initiatives will require
continuous evaluation of residential program
needs. CONCERN will monitor these state
initiatives and create training opportunities for
our residential program staff.
CONCERN Residential Programs will
research and possibly implement program
alternatives.
Youthful Achievements
CONCERN congratulates the many children
in care who are active in their schools and communities
and achieve personal and public goals.
The following is just a small representation of the
achievements of our youth:
Jayquan M., 14, received an Earth Day
Certificate for an exceptional contribution
to the Berks KidsPeace garden and being a
hardworking role model for others.
Christie B., 14, continues to volunteer at a
local nursing home and recently attended Camp
Courage.
Santo N., 8, received the Presidential Physical
Fitness Award.
Joshua P., 7, scored in the top three of his first
grade class on a math placement exam. Joshua’s
to the service project, obtained her baby-sitting
certificate and also tackled the numerous other
tasks required to earn the award.
STAR (Supporting Teens After Release) Fund
Total Requests: 776
CONCERN is committed to the ideal that a lack of financial resources should not be a barrier
to young men and women and the goals they have set for themselves as they prepare to become
productive members of society. Since transitioning from childhood to the responsibilities of adulthood
is difficult enough without the additional burden of having little or no support systems in place, the
STAR (Supporting Teens After Release) Fund was established in 1999 to meet a variety of needs our
clients possess when they “age out” of the child welfare system and proceed to independent living.
These needs include continuing education and training, employment necessities and housing expenses.
During the current year, 11 STAR Fund requests were received and approved expending $6,233.18.
The CONCERN Fund
The CONCERN Fund is a discretionary fund giving CONCERN the flexibility to meet the rapidly
changing needs we encounter now as well as in the future. Funding could support CONCERN’s
capacity building abilities, meet physical infrastructure needs, as well as provide for program
development, facility expansion and renovation, and meet training and technology needs.
The CONCERN 4 Kids Legacy Society is to honor and recognize those individuals who have made
generous life gifts to CONCERN.
The most significant benefit of being a member of the CONCERN 4 Kids Legacy Society is you
have the opportunity to make not only a difference in the lives of children now, but also in the future.
Planned Giving
Planned Giving programs are designed to give individuals
the opportunity to make a gift that will create a legacy
for themselves, while at the same time allow a charitable
organization to continue its mission for many years to come.
Since planned gifts are given from a donor’s life assets rather
than through earned income, they require “planning” and are
often transmitted to a nonprofit organization through a legal
instrument such as a will or trust.
All of the following planned giving vehicles can have
significant income tax implications. Please note CONCERN
is not engaged in rendering legal or tax advisory service. For
advice and assistance in specific cases, services of an attorney,
accountant or other professional advisors should be obtained.
Bequests
A bequest for the benefit of CONCERN may
be included in the body of your will, or through
a codicil (an amendment to your will), or your
revocable living trust. Please use CONCERN’s
legal name of “CONCERN – Professional
Services for Children, Youth, and Families” when
naming CONCERN as a beneficiary. You also
may designate how your bequest should be used.
Gifts of Life Insurance
For those of even modest means, gifts of life
insurance policies are a way to make a substantial
legacy gift to CONCERN. Gifts of life insurance
can be made naming CONCERN as the irrevocable
owner of the policy. This option can literally cost
“pennies on the dollars” and provide a significant
donation to CONCERN, while allowing a donor
to make a substantially larger charitable gift than
would otherwise be possible.
Gifts of Retirement Plans
Using retirement plans such as IRAs and 401(k)
and 403(b) accounts can provide a meaningful
and lasting gift to CONCERN. Due to the
potentially harsh estate and income tax treatment
of retirement plan benefits, the cost of using
retirement plan accounts as a gifting vehicle can be
lower than using other types of property.
Gifts of Appreciated Securities
Stocks or shares in a mutual fund are donated
to CONCERN through our designated brokerage
account. Gifts of appreciated securities to
CONCERN are usually more advantageous than
giving cash. If a donor gives appreciated securities
held longer than one year, the donor can deduct
their full market value regardless of what the
donor originally paid for them, assuming the donor
itemizes on their tax return.
Outright Gifts of Tangible Personal
Property
Tangible personal property is broadly defined in
the tax code as any property, other than land or
buildings, which can be seen or touched. Examples
include works of art, antiques and collections such
as stamps, coins, sports memorabilia, etc. This
gifting option is often best for those where these
possessions are no longer intended for their use or
have become a burden to maintain or insure.
Gifts of Real Estate
Real estate including commercial or residential
property, rental or vacation properties, farmland, or
undeveloped land can reap significant tax benefits by
making planned gifts. First the donor identifies real
property to be donated, then CONCERN evaluates
the property to determine if it falls within its Gift
Acceptance Policy, and finally the donor has the
property appraised to establish its fair market value.
Life Income Gifts
Life income gifts, or gifts that permit a donor
to retain a benefit, can include a charitable gift
annuity, charitable remainder trust, charitable
remainder annuity trust, pooled income fund,
and charitable lead trust. The benefits can include
income payments for your life and the life of your
spouse (or someone else), should you choose. Due
to the complexity of these planned giving vehicles,
it is recommended that you consult with the services
of an attorney, accountant, or other professional
advisors.
For more information about these gift options or any of
CONCERN’s other fundraising activities, please contact
the Development Department at 610-944-0445 or
800-562-1427.
