The fall racing season reaches its peak on<br />

Sunday, <strong>November</strong> 7 with the 35th running<br />

of the Gazette Newspapers Stockade-athon.<br />

This 15K is a tour of the city of Schenectady,<br />

starting at the western entrance to Central<br />

Park, dropping down a relatively fast four<br />

mile section into the historic Stockade section<br />

of Schenectady (hence the name), and then<br />

climbing back to the park. A race doesn't last<br />

35 years without a good reason; this race has<br />

stood the test of time because of its challenging<br />

course and superb organizing. This is the final<br />

Grand Prix race for the <strong>2010</strong> Series and there is<br />

also Clydesdale competition for the full figured<br />

runners. The race starts atl 0:30 a.m. and there<br />

is no day of race sign-up available.<br />

When I first joined the HMRRC there was a<br />

fun race in Saratoga called the Turkey Raffle Run.<br />

The race was held at the Saratoga State Park on<br />

a hilly course and always drew an enthusiastic<br />

crowd of runners. In 1988 the Saratoga State<br />

Park ceased to be a viable option for hosting the<br />

event and the race director dropped the race. I<br />

decided to revive the event in Albany in 1989<br />

and used the rolling hills of Washington Park as<br />

the setting. Over the years the park became a<br />

tough place to hold the run as the preparation<br />

for the Holiday Lights in the Park took more and<br />

more of the available space. Three years ago we<br />

moved the event to the Crossings in the Town of<br />

Colonie and had a record turnout, as well as a<br />

new name, the Turkey RaffAL Run. This year the<br />

run is scheduled for Sunday, <strong>November</strong> 21 at<br />

10:00 a.m. at the Crossings, located on Albany-<br />

Shaker <strong>Road</strong> in the Town of Colonie. This is an<br />

hour run; each one -mile loop around the lake<br />

earns the runner a raffle ticket. At the end of the<br />

hour, everyone stops and fills out there raffle<br />

tickets while enjoying light refreshments. Over<br />

the years I have toyed with the idea of a wave<br />

start and chip timing for this event, as well as<br />

lobbying for Grand Prix status but for the time<br />

being I will stick to a low entry fee and frozen<br />

turkeys. Due to the increased popularity of this<br />

event registration is limited to the first 1,000 runners<br />

so get to the park early.<br />

A highlight on the <strong>November</strong> calendar<br />

is always the running of The New York City<br />

Marathon. This year's race will be held on Sunday,<br />

<strong>November</strong> 7 and as always, there will be<br />

a large contingent of local runners at the marathon.<br />

The Philadelphia Marathon also seems<br />

to attract a group of our local runners with its<br />

relatively flat and fast course.<br />

Thanksgiving Day is more than just an excuse<br />

to eat hearty, as there are numerous races<br />

on tap that Thursday morning. Schenectady<br />

hosts the Cardiac Classic in Central Park with<br />

a 5K race while Troy holds the Turkey Trot at<br />

City Hall with 1 mile, 5K and 10K races on the<br />

schedule. Before you sit down to feast move<br />

your feet at one of there fine races.<br />

The <strong>Club</strong> business meeting for <strong>November</strong><br />

will be held on Wednesday the 10th at 7:30<br />

p.m. at the Point of Woods clubhouse at the<br />

end of the Washington Avenue Extension. New<br />

<strong>Club</strong> president Jon Rocco invites all members<br />

to attend these meetings. 0<br />

Consistency<br />

I talked about motivation in last month's issue<br />

and now what I feel is closely related to<br />

this topic is one on consistency. Consistency<br />

to me is doing something every day, regardless<br />

of the weather or how one feels, or if your running<br />

partners bag out on you. It is like a heartbeat<br />

and an eye blink; it should just happen<br />

without any need to think or work at it.<br />

There have been many runners in our club<br />

who have unbelievable streaks (not naked running<br />

in the streets streaks, although knowing<br />

some of these guys, I'm sure they have thought<br />

about it) of years and years, and months and<br />

months, and days and days of just getting out<br />

there and running. I have heard stories that are<br />

just crazy. <strong>Runners</strong> who have been operated<br />

on (not brain surgery; although they probably<br />

needed it), but minor stuff that you and I would<br />

nurse for weeks and cry to our co-workers on<br />

how it is ruining your running. But these folks<br />

don't hesitate, don't call their friends, don't<br />

complain to anyone who will listen; they just<br />

strap on their shoes and off they go. And, one<br />

doesn't find out about such stories, until, 5 to<br />

10 years have gone by. Imagine running every<br />

day, for 5-10 years. Wow!<br />

I always thought I was an athlete committed<br />

to being the best, until, a story like that comes<br />

along, and I remember, peeking out the window<br />

a few mornings ago, and it was nasty. What did<br />

I do? Roll over and back to sleep. These folks get<br />

up like it is a sunny day at the beach and out the<br />

door they go. Truly, amazing!<br />

I am not advocating that we all behave in<br />

this manner, but it gives you an idea as to what<br />

true consistency is and how we as runners<br />

should really focus on trying to be as consistent<br />

as we can. And I don't mean really bumming<br />

out when you miss a day. Just, if it happens,<br />

don't let it become a habit.<br />

Having worked with and coached world<br />

class athletes, alii have to say is that these folks<br />

are consistent. Their days are like the movie,<br />

Groundhog Day. In the movie, the guy wakes<br />

up every day to the same day. This is how they<br />

live their lives. They wake up every day and<br />

off they go into their routine. Up at 7 for a 7<br />

mile run; weight training at noon; 4 p.m. speed<br />

workout; and ending the day with another 7-10<br />

mile run. Then they eat, basically the same<br />

meals, and go to bed, and wake up and do it<br />

all over again.<br />

But for us real folk, we should try, and I<br />

know you have heard this for years, to set up<br />

a time when you are going to work out. Set<br />

your lap tops up, and keep a daily log of the<br />

following on it. What time did I get up? What<br />

was the weather like? What did I eat for breakfast?<br />

And so on and on for the entire day (after<br />

day), these journals become your history to<br />

share with yourself, and family as you reach<br />

my age. I still find journals of mine that I can't<br />

remember writing the stuff in it. But it is fun to<br />

remember days long ago, when I would meet<br />

up with guys and sometimes girls, and go out<br />

for noon time runs at SUNY.<br />
