D5 Annex WP 3: DATABASE METHODOLOGY AND DATABASE USER MANUAL – FREIGHT TRANSPORT DEMAND 5.2.4 Container data Not only data is needed about vehicle movements (transport data) or the movements of the commodities in them (trade data) but also information on the containers is of interest. Containers can have different origins and destinations than the commodities in them and the vehicles transporting them. These data therefore are of at least comparable value for the ETIS reference database. An example of such data sources is the Piers database that describes the movements of containers between the USA and Europe where multiple transhipment is included. It will be attempted to make a distinction between filled and empty containers. The following container data sources are considered: · EUROSTAT COMEXT (container indicator, only for extraEU trade) · UIRR · ICF · Piers database · Ports · Inland terminals 5.2.5 Vehicle/vessel movement data This type of information is available in several sources. The following vehicle/vessel movement data sources are considered: · EUROSTAT New Cronos · National transport statistics Special attention has to be paid to movements of empty vehicle/vessels 5.2.6 Relation with other datasets in the ETIS reference database State of the art All state of the art information collected will be incorporated in the freight demand dataset. Socioeconomic dataset Where data gaps remain estimation procedure must be applied. These estimation procedures for a large part rely on socioeconomic input data. The required socioeconomic data can be different for each model. The following data can be seen as frequently used. · Population by sex and age classes (04, 59, ..., 6570, > 70) · Gross value added by three sectors: • Agriculture, fishery, forestry • Industry 34 Document2 27 May 2004

The freight O/D matrix will be used as input for the European transport network dataset to make assignments on the transport network in order to determine the intensities on each link of the network. Freight transport service and cost dataset Data about the transport sectors are needed for all countries/areas to be included in the system. Here variables like costs per hour and by kilometre are important but also restrictions on the commodities or weight to be transported. External effects dataset The freight O/D matrix will be used as input for the external effects dataset to calculate external effects between O/D relations or on network level (via assignments). Synthesis and dissemination The freight demand dataset will be used for the synthesis and dissemination. Document2 27 May 2004 35
