People Security Watch Effort Wins Silver The Shipyard Security Watch Group initiative, a joint effort by Jurong Shipyard, Jurong West NPC and two other yards, was singled out for silver from 280 nominated projects in the South West District Community Safety and Security Programme (CSSP) Awards 2005. The award, which recognises outstanding community projects that enhance security and safety within the district, was presented to the various representatives of the watch group during a ceremony held at The Chevrons on May 7, 2005. Guest-of-Honour, Dr Amy Khor, Mayor of South West District and Member of Parliament for Hong Kah GRC, presenting the award to representatives from the Shipyard Security Watch Group Key members in our security watch team The Shipyard Security Watch Group was officially launched in November last year as a proactive measure against terrorism. Working closely with the police, Jurong Shipyard’s Security Watch Group regularly conduct joint patrols and evacuation exercises, with the active involvement of security and safety personnel, to heighten collective vigilance within the yard. Having achieved silver at the district level, the Shipyard Security Watch Group project will qualify for the upcoming National Level CSSP Award in July. Congratulations to all in the team for their achievements! Let’s continue to work together to ensure the safety and security of our yard! Learning Visit by Overseas Students A group of 30 overseas students from the Senior Executive Masters Programme from the University of Tennessee, United States, came by the yard for a learning visit on May 27, 2005. To give the visitors a better understanding of the Group’s marine and offshore business, senior management from SembCorp Marine and Jurong Shipyard delivered a series of presentations on the group’s global operations and integrated expertise in ship repair, shipbuilding, ship conversion, rig building and offshore engineering. The session also saw an interactive exchange of ideas, as visitors and hosts engaged in a meaningful time of discussion and sharing. Comrade of Labour Award Congratulations to Mr CV Nathan on receiving the Comrade of Labour Award for his significant contributions to harmonious union-management relations within the yard. The award, conferred by the National Trade Union Congress, was presented by Mr Lim Boon Heng, NTUC’s Secretary General and Minister, Prime Minister’s Office, during this year’s May Day Dinner. Currently the Vice-President and Branch Secretary of Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Employees' Union (SMEEU), Jurong Shipyard Branch, Nathan has been actively involved in union work since 1971. He was instrumental in laying the foundations for strong union-management synergy, whilst serving as the house union’s first president in 1982. Health Matters Health & Fitness Promotion Salsa Dance Employees can now salsa their way to better fitness – with the new dance workshop introduced in May 2005. Our staff had fun learning the exotic Latin dance, which enhances cardiovascular fitness and overall coordination, while making new friends. The current series of fitness programmes also includes yoga, aerobics and line-dancing. Talks & Workshops Breast Cancer Awareness ● A Breast Cancer Awareness Workshop organised on May 18, 2005, provided employees with a better understanding of the disease. Staff were advised about the symptoms of breast cancer and taught techniques of conducting breast self-examination. Auto adVenture 2005 It was fun on wheels, as participants of the JSL Auto adVenture embarked on a trip to Kuantan, Malaysia, over the Vesak Day holidays from May 21 to 23, 2005. During the event, organised by the Jurong Shipyard Recreation Club, staff together with their friends and families enjoyed a great time of sight-seeing and bonding along the way. ● ● Cholesterol Management Staff learnt how to keep their cholesterol levels in check through a series of cholesterol management programmes, including an “Eat Well & Live Well” health talk on April 4 and a “Lowering Cholesterol Through Dietary Management” workshop on April 12. Participants were taught how to differentiate between good and bad cholesterol, and tips on choosing the right foods for better health. Osteoporosis To prevent osteoporosis, the condition of weak and brittle bones, among employees, Jurong Shipyard held an Osteoporosis Awareness Talk on June 23. During the session, participants learnt about the importance of having adequate calcium intake and exercise to build strong and healthy bones. National Runway Cycling 2005 Jurong Shipyard’s employees and their families had a great time cycling along the runway of Paya Lebar Airbase during the National Runway Cycling 2005 on Sunday, June 12. Jointly organised by SAFRA, Republic of Singapore Air Force, and Singapore Sports Council, the event also provided participants the rare opportunity of getting up close with RSAF’s latest stable of aircrafts and weaponry systems. Developing High-Performing Teams To further boost team synergy for maximum performance, the yard organised a two-day teambuilding workshop for a group of employees in Sentosa on May 12 and 13, 2005. The 18 participants enjoyed an interactive and hands-on learning experience, as they acquired a deeper understanding of personal and team effectiveness through a series of games and activities, which shed light into the key principles of leadership, trust, cooperation and communication.
