One of the largest single contracts in the
industry, the Engineering, Procurement and
Construction (EPC) contract calls for Jurong
Shipyard to build two 6th generation Friede &
Goldman (F & G) ExD designed ultra-deepwater
semi-submersible drilling rigs.
MICA (P) 028/06/2005 May - June 2005
Largest US$780 Million
Semi-Sub Building Contract
Jurong Shipyard has bagged a US$780
million deal – its biggest newbuilding
order to-date – from Cyprus-based
Seatankers Management Co. Ltd
(Seatankers) for the construction of two
6th generation ultra-deepwater semisubmersible
drilling rigs in June 2005.
The semi-submersible rigs are designed for
operation in the challenging deepwater arena,
in particular the Gulf of Mexico, offshore Brazil
and West Africa, with the ability to remain in
dynamic positioning mode in water depths up
to 10,000 feet. Engineered for stability and
versatility, the semi-submersible rigs have an
operational displacement of 43,400 metric tons
at 17 metres draft and 46,750 metric tons at
20 metres draft, with 18,000 square feet of
usable deck space and more than 7,000 metric
tons of variable deck load.
Construction of the first semi-submersible rig
has since commenced with delivery slated in
the first quarter of 2008, while work on the
second semi-submersible rig is scheduled in
October 2005 with delivery expected in the first
half of 2009.
Affirming his confidence in Jurong Shipyard’s
rig-building abilities, Mr John Fredriksen of
Seatankers Management Co. Ltd, said, “We
have chosen to build the rigs in Jurong Shipyard
based on the shipyard’s proven track record
in building quality rigs. We are extremely
pleased to be able to work with such a firstclass
shipyard. It has been of vital importance
for us that Jurong is delivering a turnkey project
including full completion tests of the units.”
The 6 th generation F&G ultra-deepwater semi-submersible rigs will be built based on the same design as shown above
Mr Don Lee, Senior General Manager of
Offshore Division, expressed his delight at
partnering Seatankers in this prestigious
project. “We are privileged to have the
opportunity to work with Seatankers and R S
Platou, a leading offshore broker in concluding
this important contract,” said Mr Lee. “This
Close partnership – Mr John Fredriksen of Seatankers together
with Mr Don Lee, JSPL’s Senior GM of Offshore, during the
contract signing in Norway
award by Seatankers is a testimony of Jurong
Shipyard as a premier rig builder and a
recognised global player in the offshore
market,” he added.
The contract award followed “hot on the heels”
of the successful deliveries of two newbuild
5th generation F & G ultra-deepwater semisubmersible
sister rigs, GSF Development
Driller I and GSF Development Driller II, to
GlobalSantaFe Corporation in the first quarter
this year. Both semi-submersibles were built
using Jurong Shipyard’s proprietary “Load-out
and Mating-in-Dock” technique, which involves
the simultaneous construction, and the
subsequent skidding and mating of the upper
and lower hulls. This breakthrough method,
which won the Innovation of the Year Award
in 2003, allows accelerated construction,
precise alignment of hulls, and enhanced
quality and safety standards.

Another US$131 Million
Jack-Up Win
Jurong Shipyard has secured a US$131 million rig building contract in June 2005 to build a third Baker Marine Pacific
Class 375 (BMC Pacific 375) Deep Drilling Offshore Jack-up for Norway’s Petrojack ASA.
Newbuilding works for the third BMC Pacific
375 jack-up rig, to be named Petrojack III,
is expected to commence in the fourth
quarter of 2005, with delivery slated in the
fourth quarter of 2008. When completed,
the rig will be equipped with a drilling
package to drill high pressure and high
temperature wells at 30,000 feet whilst
operating in 375 feet of water, with the ability
to accommodate 120 men.
December 2004 and April 2005. The two
rigs, Petrojack I and Petrojack II, are
currently under construction in the yard,
with deliveries scheduled in March 2007
and January 2008 respectively.
Mr Berge Gerdt Larsen, owner and board
member of Petrojack ASA, said, “The Board
of Petrojack ASA is very pleased with the
relationship and co-operation extended by
Jurong Shipyard and its parent SembCorp
Marine. With the robust offshore oil and gas
market, we are confident that these three
premium jack-up rigs will enhance our ability
to serve our customers.”
Mr Don Lee, Senior General Manager of
Offshore Division, said, “Petrojack III is
the third jack-up rig on order by Petrojack
ASA. The jack-up will be identical to two
other jack-up rigs currently under
construction in Jurong Shipyard. This is
an endorsement of the confidence that
our client has in our ability and
capabilities to construct the jack-ups.”
Prior to the award of Petrojack III, Jurong
Shipyard was contracted to build two similar
jack-up rigs for Petrojack earlier in
The jack-up will be constructed based on the BMC Pacific 375 design
