<strong>Shipyard</strong> to build two 6th generation Friede &<br />

Goldman (F & G) ExD designed ultra-deepwater<br />

semi-submersible drilling rigs.<br />

Largest US$780 Million<br />

Semi-Sub Building Contract<br />

<strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> has bagged a US$780<br />

million deal – its biggest newbuilding<br />

order to-date – from Cyprus-based<br />

Seatankers Management Co. <strong>Ltd</strong><br />

(Seatankers) for the construction of two<br />

6th generation ultra-deepwater semisubmersible<br />

drilling rigs in June 2005.<br />

The semi-submersible rigs are designed for<br />

operation in the challenging deepwater arena,<br />

in particular the Gulf of Mexico, offshore Brazil<br />

and West Africa, with the ability to remain in<br />

dynamic positioning mode in water depths up<br />

to 10,000 feet. Engineered for stability and<br />

versatility, the semi-submersible rigs have an<br />

operational displacement of 43,400 metric tons<br />

at 17 metres draft and 46,750 metric tons at<br />

20 metres draft, with 18,000 square feet of<br />

usable deck space and more than 7,000 metric<br />

tons of variable deck load.<br />

Construction of the first semi-submersible rig<br />

has since commenced with delivery slated in<br />

the first quarter of 2008, while work on the<br />

second semi-submersible rig is scheduled in<br />

October 2005 with delivery expected in the first<br />

half of 2009.<br />

Affirming his confidence in <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong>’s<br />

rig-building abilities, Mr John Fredriksen of<br />

Seatankers Management Co. <strong>Ltd</strong>, said, “We<br />

have chosen to build the rigs in <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong><br />

based on the shipyard’s proven track record<br />

in building quality rigs. We are extremely<br />

pleased to be able to work with such a firstclass<br />

shipyard. It has been of vital importance<br />

for us that <strong>Jurong</strong> is delivering a turnkey project<br />

including full completion tests of the units.”<br />

<strong>Shipyard</strong> as a premier rig builder and a<br />

recognised global player in the offshore<br />

market,” he added.<br />

The contract award followed “hot on the heels”<br />

of the successful deliveries of two newbuild<br />

5th generation F & G ultra-deepwater semisubmersible<br />

sister rigs, GSF Development<br />

Driller I and GSF Development Driller II, to<br />

GlobalSantaFe Corporation in the first quarter<br />

this year. Both semi-submersibles were built<br />

using <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong>’s proprietary “Load-out<br />

and Mating-in-Dock” technique, which involves<br />

the simultaneous construction, and the<br />

subsequent skidding and mating of the upper<br />

and lower hulls. This breakthrough method,<br />

which won the Innovation of the Year Award<br />

in 2003, allows accelerated construction,<br />

precise alignment of hulls, and enhanced<br />

quality and safety standards.

Another US$131 Million<br />

Jack-Up Win<br />

<strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> has secured a US$131 million rig building contract in June 2005 to build a third Baker Marine Pacific<br />

Class 375 (BMC Pacific 375) Deep Drilling Offshore Jack-up for Norway’s Petrojack ASA.<br />

Newbuilding works for the third BMC Pacific<br />

375 jack-up rig, to be named Petrojack III,<br />

is expected to commence in the fourth<br />

quarter of 2005, with delivery slated in the<br />

fourth quarter of 2008. When completed,<br />

the rig will be equipped with a drilling<br />

package to drill high pressure and high<br />

temperature wells at 30,000 feet whilst<br />

operating in 375 feet of water, with the ability<br />

to accommodate 120 men.<br />

December 2004 and April 2005. The two<br />

rigs, Petrojack I and Petrojack II, are<br />

currently under construction in the yard,<br />

with deliveries scheduled in March 2007<br />

and January 2008 respectively.<br />

Mr Berge Gerdt Larsen, owner and board<br />

member of Petrojack ASA, said, “The Board<br />

of Petrojack ASA is very pleased with the<br />

relationship and co-operation extended by<br />

<strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> and its parent SembCorp<br />

Marine. With the robust offshore oil and gas<br />

market, we are confident that these three<br />

premium jack-up rigs will enhance our ability<br />

to serve our customers.”<br />

Mr Don Lee, Senior General Manager of<br />

Offshore Division, said, “Petrojack III is<br />

the third jack-up rig on order by Petrojack<br />

ASA. The jack-up will be identical to two<br />

other jack-up rigs currently under<br />

construction in <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong>. This is<br />

an endorsement of the confidence that<br />

our client has in our ability and<br />

capabilities to construct the jack-ups.”<br />

Prior to the award of Petrojack III, <strong>Jurong</strong><br />

<strong>Shipyard</strong> was contracted to build two similar<br />

jack-up rigs for Petrojack earlier in<br />

The jack-up will be constructed based on the BMC Pacific 375 design<br />

Overhaul of Transocean Legend<br />

Transocean Legend, a semi-submersible rig belonging to<br />

Transocean’s fleet, departed <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> in June 19 after<br />

making a stopover at the yard for repairs and upgrading in<br />

<strong>May</strong> 2005.<br />

In addition to the standard drydocking works, key jobs carried out<br />

comprised the upgrading of accommodation, including galley to<br />

house more men, repairs to the anchor windlass assembly and<br />

gearbox, upgrading of piping systems and installation of additional<br />

lifeboat platforms.<br />

On redelivery, the rig, measuring 102m in length by 67m in breadth,<br />

with a draft of 37m, was towed to Russia for her next voyage.<br />

Milestone Steel Striking<br />

for Petrojack I<br />

The construction commencement of Petrojack I, <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong>’s first newbuild jack-up rig, was commemorated on June<br />

13, 2005 with a strike steel ceremony, representing a significant milestone in <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong>’s expansion into rig building.<br />

the auspicious occasion was attended by key<br />

personnel from Petrojack, including Senior<br />

Resident Engineer Mr Geir Eik, as well as<br />

senior management and project team<br />

representatives from <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> and<br />

PPL <strong>Shipyard</strong>.<br />

Althea Gas LPG Tanker Repairs<br />

Althea Gas, a 227m x 36m x 21.90m LPG tanker, was<br />

redelivered to her owner Iino Marine Service Co. <strong>Ltd</strong>, Japan,<br />

on April 7, 2005, after drydocking repairs in <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong>.<br />

Machinery repairs performed on the 53,677 dwt vessel included overhaul<br />

of LPG compressors, main cargo pumps, and cargo mountings. Overhaul<br />

works were also carried out on the ship’s main and diesel engines. The<br />

scope of refitting included renewal of port/starboard windlass brake<br />

linings, mooring winch brake load test, cleaning of condensers and<br />

auxiliary boiler, and other electrical repairs.<br />

The vessel also underwent hull blasting and painting, sea chest<br />

cleaning, as well as renewal of anchors and chains. Other significant<br />

repairs comprised hose handling crane wire reverse, life boat<br />

servicing, as well as overhaul of cargo tank safety valves and cargo<br />

line relief valves.<br />

Drilling Offshore Jack-up Rig will be conducted<br />

in phases, involving steel fabrication in the<br />

workshop, assembly of parts at drydock and<br />

quayside, and interface works as well as<br />

testing and commissioning.<br />

Showcasing Expertise at Nor-Shipping 2005<br />

SembCorp Marine and its subsidiary yards – <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong>, Sembawang <strong>Shipyard</strong><br />

and PPL <strong>Shipyard</strong> – showcased to great success its range of integrated expertise during<br />

Nor-Shipping 2005, a premier trade show for the global shipping industry, which took<br />

place from June 7 to 10, in Oslo, Norway.<br />

The Group was part of the 15-exhibitor strong<br />

delegation forming the Singapore Pavilion,<br />

organised by the Singapore Maritime<br />

Foundation (SMF). This year’s show had a<br />

record turnout with 13,429 visitors and 820<br />

exhibitors from 39 countries, comprising<br />

some of the world’s leading shipyards,<br />

maritime equipment manufacturers and<br />

service providers.<br />

There to promote Singapore as a gateway<br />

to Asia, Mrs. Lim Hwee Hua, Minister of<br />

State for Transport and Finance, was one<br />

of the invited guests who opened both the<br />

exhibition and pavilion. She was also a<br />

keynote speaker at the opening conference<br />

on 8 June, 2005.<br />

A steady stream of ship owners, agents and<br />

suppliers visited the 36m 2 SembCorp Marine<br />

provided many opportunities to strengthen and<br />

expand the current network of partnerships as<br />

well as build new relationships. Long<br />

partnerships, some over 30 years old, were<br />

once again renewed during the exhibition. New<br />

friends were also made amongst other<br />

customers, shipyards, and suppliers from all<br />

over the world.<br />

Working together, the three sister yards also<br />

explored new ways of collaboration in enabling<br />

SembCorp Marine to synergise strengths and<br />

offer more value to customers.<br />

The exhibition ended on Friday, June 10, 2005<br />

and was a success for SembCorp Marine and<br />

her shipyards. The Group looks forward to<br />

participating in the next Nor-Shipping exhibition,<br />

which will be held in 2007.<br />

While the exhibition was a good chance to introduce<br />

SembCorp Marine’s services to the global market, the four-day<br />

event was also an opportunity to renew old partnerships and<br />

make new friends. The SembCorp Marine group of shipyards<br />

played host to a series of private dinner parties to build<br />

bonds and strengthen the network in Norway and Europe.<br />

6.6.2005 ● Sembawang <strong>Shipyard</strong> organised a dinner onboard a yacht for their<br />

Norwegian alliance partners and other customers.<br />

7.6.2005 ● PPL <strong>Shipyard</strong> hosted an exclusive dinner on Anders Wilhelmson AS’<br />

private island for its Norwegian customers. The Guest-of-Honour Mrs.<br />

Lim Hwee Hua was accompanied by Maritime and Port Authority of<br />

Singapore (MPA) Chief Executive BG Tay Lim Heng, Chairman of<br />

SMF Mr. Teo Siong Seng, as well as other delegates from the Ministry<br />

of Transport and MPA.<br />

● A Chinese dinner was organised by Sembawang <strong>Shipyard</strong> to strengthen<br />

relationships with their fleet manager clients.<br />

8.6.2005 ● A highly successful Singapore Night, hosted by the SMF and Mr. Svein<br />

Aaser, Singapore’s Honorary Consul-General to Norway (Oslo), was<br />

held in honour of Minister of State Mrs. Lim Hwee Hua at the Hotel<br />

Continental in central Oslo. With a turnout three times more than<br />

expected, the cocktail reception provided the Singapore companies,<br />

including SembCorp Marine, a platform to meet their customers, partners<br />

and suppliers and get to know each other better.<br />

9.6.2005 ● A dinner was hosted by <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong>’s agent Norship Agencies for<br />

<strong>Jurong</strong>, and other European yards under their care. The dinner<br />

celebrated longstanding partnerships and was a chance to discuss<br />

current issues in shipyard management.<br />

“I Care” Safety Campaign<br />

As part of ongoing efforts to achieve a zero-incident rate within the yard, <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong><br />

organised a week-long safety campaign from <strong>May</strong> 12 to 17, 2005 to further enhance employees’<br />

safety awareness.<br />

With the theme “I CARE – Working Towards<br />

Zero Incident”, the campaign aimed to further<br />

encourage personnel to adopt a proactive<br />

attitude towards safety by exercising CARE<br />

(Commitment, Awareness, Recognition and<br />

Evaluation) in preventing incidents at work.<br />

Security Watch Effort Wins Silver<br />

The <strong>Shipyard</strong> Security Watch Group<br />

initiative, a joint effort by <strong>Jurong</strong><br />

<strong>Shipyard</strong>, <strong>Jurong</strong> West NPC and two other<br />

yards, was singled out for silver from 280<br />

nominated projects in the South West<br />

District Community Safety and Security<br />

Programme (CSSP) Awards 2005.<br />

The award, which recognises outstanding<br />

community projects that enhance security<br />

and safety within the district, was presented<br />

to the various representatives of the watch<br />

group during a ceremony held at The<br />

Chevrons on <strong>May</strong> 7, 2005.<br />

The <strong>Shipyard</strong> Security Watch Group was<br />

officially launched in November last year as<br />

a proactive measure against terrorism.<br />

Working closely with the police, <strong>Jurong</strong><br />

<strong>Shipyard</strong>’s Security Watch Group regularly<br />

conduct joint patrols and evacuation<br />

exercises, with the active involvement of<br />

security and safety personnel, to heighten<br />

collective vigilance within the yard.<br />

Having achieved silver at the district level,<br />

the <strong>Shipyard</strong> Security Watch Group project<br />

will qualify for the upcoming National Level<br />

CSSP Award in July.<br />

Learning Visit by<br />

Overseas Students<br />

A group of 30 overseas students from the Senior Executive<br />

Masters Programme from the University of Tennessee,<br />

United States, came by the yard for a learning visit on<br />

<strong>May</strong> 27, 2005.<br />

To give the visitors a better understanding of the Group’s marine<br />

and offshore business, senior management from SembCorp<br />

Marine and <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> delivered a series of presentations<br />

on the group’s global operations and integrated expertise in<br />

ship repair, shipbuilding, ship conversion, rig building and<br />

offshore engineering. The session also saw an interactive<br />

exchange of ideas, as visitors and hosts engaged in a meaningful<br />

time of discussion and sharing.<br />

Comrade of<br />

Labour Award<br />

Congratulations to Mr CV Nathan on receiving the Comrade<br />

of Labour Award for his significant contributions to harmonious<br />

union-management relations within the yard.<br />

The award, conferred by the National Trade Union Congress, was<br />

presented by Mr Lim Boon Heng, NTUC’s Secretary General and<br />

Minister, Prime Minister’s Office, during this year’s <strong>May</strong> Day Dinner.<br />

Currently the Vice-President and Branch Secretary of Shipbuilding<br />

and Marine Engineering Employees' Union (SMEEU), <strong>Jurong</strong><br />

<strong>Shipyard</strong> Branch, Nathan has been actively involved in union work<br />

since 1971. He was instrumental in laying the foundations for<br />

strong union-management synergy, whilst serving as the house<br />

union’s first president in 1982.<br />

Health & Fitness Promotion<br />

Salsa Dance<br />

Employees can now salsa their way to better fitness – with the new<br />

dance workshop introduced in <strong>May</strong> 2005. Our staff had fun learning the<br />

exotic Latin dance, which enhances cardiovascular fitness and overall<br />

coordination, while making new friends. The current series of fitness<br />

programmes also includes yoga, aerobics and line-dancing.<br />

Breast Cancer Awareness<br />

● A Breast Cancer Awareness Workshop organised on <strong>May</strong> 18,<br />

2005, provided employees with a better understanding of the<br />

disease. Staff were advised about the symptoms of breast cancer<br />

and taught techniques of conducting breast self-examination.<br />

Auto adVenture 2005<br />

It was fun on wheels, as participants of the JSL Auto adVenture<br />

embarked on a trip to Kuantan, Malaysia, over the Vesak Day holidays<br />

from <strong>May</strong> 21 to 23, 2005. During the event, organised by the <strong>Jurong</strong><br />

<strong>Shipyard</strong> Recreation Club, staff together with their friends and families<br />

enjoyed a great time of sight-seeing and bonding along the way.<br />

Cholesterol Management<br />

Staff learnt how to keep their cholesterol levels in check through a<br />

series of cholesterol management programmes, including an “Eat<br />

Well & Live Well” health talk on April 4 and a “Lowering Cholesterol<br />

Through Dietary Management” workshop on April 12. Participants<br />

were taught how to differentiate between good and bad cholesterol,<br />

and tips on choosing the right foods for better health.<br />

Osteoporosis<br />

To prevent osteoporosis, the condition of weak and brittle bones,<br />

among employees, <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> held an Osteoporosis Awareness<br />

Talk on June 23. During the session, participants learnt about the<br />

importance of having adequate calcium intake and exercise to build<br />

strong and healthy bones.<br />

National Runway Cycling 2005<br />

<strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong>’s employees and their families had a great time<br />

cycling along the runway of Paya Lebar Airbase during the National<br />

Runway Cycling 2005 on Sunday, June 12. Jointly organised by SAFRA,<br />

Republic of Singapore Air Force, and Singapore Sports Council, the<br />

event also provided participants the rare opportunity of getting up close<br />

with RSAF’s latest stable of aircrafts and weaponry systems.<br />

High-Performing Teams<br />

To further boost team synergy for maximum performance,<br />

the yard organised a two-day teambuilding workshop for a<br />

group of employees in Sentosa on <strong>May</strong> 12 and 13, 2005.<br />

The 18 participants enjoyed an interactive and hands-on<br />

learning experience, as they acquired a deeper understanding<br />

of personal and team effectiveness through a series of<br />

games and activities, which shed light into the key principles<br />

of leadership, trust, cooperation and communication.<br />

All set to make a difference in their teams!<br />
