Jurong Shipyard, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Marine,
has secured a repeat turnkey order from Larsen Oil & Gas for a
fourth consecutive deepwater semi-submersible drilling rig at a
contract value of US$640 (S$870) million.
This contract, effective by end July 2008, calls for the turnkey construction
of a 6th generation ultra-deepwater semi-submersible drilling rig to be built
based on the Friede & Goldman Ex-D Millennium Class design with delivery
scheduled in April 2011.
‘‘All three units of our deepwater semi-submersible rigs, PetroRig I, PetroRig
II and PetroRig III, currently under construction in the shipyard have secured
long-term charter contracts. PetroRig I will be chartered to Petrobras America
to drill in the Gulf of Mexico while PetroRig II is contracted to Petroleo Brasileiro
S.A. for drilling in offshore Brazil in 2009. PetroRig III will be chartered to
Pemex for drilling in Mexico in 2010. We remain optimistic of the offshore oil
and gas market and will continue with our robust expansion into this sector.”
Mr Don Lee, Senior General Manager of Jurong Shipyard’s Offshore
Department, said: “We are pleased with the confi dence that Larsen Oil &
Gas has entrusted us with an additional unit of the semi-submersible rig. We
are delighted to be part of Larsen Oil & Gas’ rig building programme and their
Strategic Alliance with Mac Laren Shipyard in Brazil
Bustling with activity: Jurong Shipyard’s strategic
Brazilian partner Mac Laren Shipyard in Rio de
Janeiro.
Jurong Shipyard has signed a Strategic
Alliance Agreement with Rio de Janeirobased
Mac Laren Shipyard to operate a
shipyard in Brazil.
Under the Alliance Agreement, Jurong Shipyard
will collaborate with Mac Laren for all future
offshore oil and gas related projects to be
May - June 2008
undertaken in Brazil. Jurong Shipyard will have
management lead for all the projects and in return,
Mac Laren will be providing the yard the exclusive
use of its existing shipyard facilities located in Rio
de Janeiro. The percentage participation of Mac
Laren for all such projects is up to 49 per cent.
Located in Niteroi in the state of Rio de Janeiro,
Mac Laren is a mid-sized shipyard with a total
land area of 408,000m², comprising 128,000m²
of waterfront land and 280,000m² of construction
yard. The Brazilian shipyard is currently expanding
its shipyard facilities with the construction of a
new 150m x 130m x 13m drydock. Scheduled
for completion in the 3rd quarter of 2009, the
new drydock will be one of the two purpose-built
drydocks in Brazil capable of drydocking semisubmersible
rigs, including the largest production
rigs. Besides the drydock, the shipyard is also
expanding its structural and piping workshop to
11,860m² and increasing its quayside length to
240m to accommodate the berthing of VLCCsized
FPSOs.
On the rationale for the strategic alliance with Mac
Laren, Mr Wong Weng Sun, President and Chief
Operating Offi cer of Sembcorp Marine, said:
“The strategic alliance with Mac Laren will enable
Jurong Shipyard to be a key player in Brazil’s oil
and gas construction industry. Located in the
State of Rio de Janeiro, the centre for oil and gas
construction activities in Brazil, the shipyard is
well-positioned to leverage on the abundance of
experienced workforce, offshore related materials
and equipment suppliers to meet the needs of the
booming offshore market in Brazil.”
Effective since April 2008, the Alliance Agreement
is valid for 5 years and mutually renewable on
expiry.

Innovating for Workplace Safety and Productivity
Driven by the desire to further enhance day-to-day work
processes, teams of employees from Jurong Shipyard and
its subsidiaries put their creativity to work by developing
innovative projects for workplace improvement.
Team members presenting their innovation to the judging panel.
Eight of these innovations were entered into the yard’s Workplace Safety &
Health (WSH) Innovations Convention on June 19, 2008. After an exciting
round of presentations and demonstrations, the top three inventions (see
box) were chosen by a panel of judges for their effectiveness in enhancing
workplace safety and productivity.
Winning WSH Innovations
1 st Prize : Complete Sensor, VISION Team (JIS)
The VISION Team from Jurong Integrated Services
came up with the idea of installing a “Complete
Sensor” device on moving machinery to enable the
timely detection of people and objects to prevent
incidents from occuring. Utilising a tension wire
detection system, the sensor will stop the machine
upon detecting objects within close range. This has
resulted in enhanced safety in the workshops and
greater morale among employees.
VISION Team from Jurong Integrated Services.
2 nd Prize : The Safety Hook, Safe Stage Team (HP)
“The Safety Hook”, invented by the Safe Stage Team from Hull
Painting, is a simple but effective contraption that creates an
extended outlet for the secure hooking of the safety harness to
‘scallop holes’ within the ship’s hull. This signifi cantly enhances
safety and reduces falling hazards during scaffold work while
boosting the morale and confi dence of workers.
Safe Stage Team from Hull Painting.
3 rd Prize : Electro-Hydraulic Cable Ladder Cutting Device, LIFE Team (JMA)
The LIFE Team from Jurong Machinery and Automation Pte. Ltd.
developed the “Electro-Hydraulic Cable Ladder Cutting Device”
to replace the conventional way of using power tools and manual
shears to cut cable ladders, which may lead to hand and fi nger
injuries.
By automating the process, this innovative device raises
productivity and minimizes the need to exert excessive force
during cable-ladder cutting. This signifi cantly enhances safety and
productivity, resulting in man-hour savings of up to 200%.
