Milestone Delivery of West Sirius<br />

West Sirius, the first of a series of seven ultra-deepwater dynamic positioning 6th generation semi-submersible drilling rigs, was delivered to Seadrill Limited in March<br />

2008 after its successful turnkey construction<br />

<strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong>, a subsidiary of Sembcorp Marine, has set a major milestone with the delivery of West Sirius, the first of a<br />

series of seven ultra-deepwater dynamic positioning 6th generation semi-submersible drilling rigs constructed by the yard.<br />

The successful delivery of West Sirius to<br />

Norwegian rig-owner Seadrill Limited at end<br />

March 2008 is of special signifi cance being<br />

the yard’s fi rst turnkey semi-submersible rig<br />

building project encompassing engineering,<br />

procurement, construction, integration and<br />

commissioning elements.<br />

Currently on charter to Devon Energy for a<br />

four-year assignment in the Gulf of Mexico,<br />

West Sirius is the fi rst of three similar Friede &<br />

Goldman (F&G) Ex-D design semi-submersible<br />

units ordered by Seadrill Limited.<br />

West Sirius was constructed using <strong>Jurong</strong><br />

<strong>Shipyard</strong>’s proprietary “Load-out & Mating-in-<br />

Dock” semi-submersible construction technique.<br />

Using this breakthrough methodology, the rig’s<br />

upper and the lower hulls were simultaneously<br />

constructed and subsequently skidded and<br />

mated in the drydock.<br />

The second sister rig, to be named West<br />

Taurus, was also built and assembled in close<br />

succession using the yard’s newly developed<br />

“Transverse Skidding” technique. This<br />

innovative new construction methodology<br />

works in combination with the “Load-out &<br />

Mating-in-Dock” technique to enable the fasttrack<br />

construction and sequential assembly<br />

of multiple semi-submersibles while meeting<br />

high standards of quality, safety and precision.<br />

As a result, rig delivery time has sped up by 4<br />

months, allowing <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> to deliver 2<br />

semi-submersibles a year.<br />

West Sirius belongs to a new generation of<br />

rigs that feature a larger operating area, a high<br />

load carrying capacity, decreased dependence<br />

on frequent supplies, effi ciency and improved<br />

safety and working environment, while<br />

minimising the exposure to the environment. The<br />

rig incorporates sophisticated deep-sea drilling<br />

technologies for drilling wells of up to 37,500<br />

feet while operating in dynamic positioning<br />

mode in water depths of up to 10,000 feet.<br />

Designed with a usable deck space of 18,000<br />

square feet, the rig is capable of carrying a<br />

variable deck load of up to 8,000 tons and has<br />

an operational displacement of 43,400 metric<br />

tons at 17 metres draft and 46,750 metric tons<br />

at 20 metres draft.<br />

Raroa FPSO Takes Flight<br />

RAROA, the first of two Floating<br />

Production Storage and Offloading<br />

vessels (FPSOs) under conversion<br />

at <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong>, was delivered to<br />

Tanker Pacific Offshore Terminals <strong>Pte</strong><br />

<strong>Ltd</strong> in early April 2008.<br />

<strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> had successfully converted<br />

RAROA, Tanker Pacifi c’s fi rst FPSO, from<br />

the 92,802 dwt tanker M.T. Andaman Sea.<br />

The conversion operation encompassed the<br />

installation of an internal turret, 3 boilers on<br />

deck to generate 24 megawatts of power,<br />

renewal of the entire piping and electrical<br />

systems and installation of new process<br />

facilities for crude separation, water injection<br />

and chemical injection.<br />

Upon delivery, the FPSO RAROA has since<br />

been on charter to OMV New Zealand for<br />

its Maari Field development project, offshore<br />

New Zealand’s South Taranaki. Designed<br />

to operate 15 years without drydocking,<br />

the FPSO has the ability to process 40,000<br />

barrels of oil per day and store up to 646,548<br />

barrels of oil.<br />

Conversion and life extension work is also<br />

underway in <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> for Tanker<br />

Pacifi c’s second FPSO to be named Montara<br />

Venture from the 148,255 dwt oil tanker<br />

M.T. Freeway. This FPSO will be capable of<br />

operating 15 years without drydocking, with<br />

a production capacity of 40,000 barrels per<br />

day and a storage capacity of 900,000 barrels<br />

of oil. Slated for completion in 3Q 2008,<br />

Montara Venture will be chartered to Coogee<br />

Resources for deployment in the Montara<br />

Field, offshore Australia.<br />

Naming & Delivery of PetroJack II<br />

<strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> has successfully<br />

handed over PetroJack II, its second<br />

high-performance newbuilt deepdrilling<br />

offshore jack-up rig, at end<br />

March 2008 to PetroJack ASA, a<br />

subsidiary of leading Norwegian<br />

energy group Larsen Oil & Gas.<br />

PetroJack II is currently in the yard for<br />

further enhancement and modifi cation works<br />

commissioned by the rig’s charterer Saipem, an<br />

international drilling contractor. When completed,<br />

the rig will be deployed for drilling in the Middle<br />

East under a four-year charter.<br />

PetroJack II is the second unit of four deep-drilling<br />

jack-up rigs originally contracted to <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong><br />

by PetroJack, which subsequently sold the fi rst<br />

and the third unit to an international Danish drilling<br />

contractor. The fourth unit, to be named PetroJack<br />

IV, is scheduled for completion in 4Q 2008.<br />

The rig was built based on the Group’s proprietary<br />

Baker Marine Pacifi c Class 375 (BMC Pacifi c<br />

375) design, a proven and tested design that<br />

with its quality performance and advanced drilling<br />

capabilities. This highly sophisticated jack-up<br />

rig will be capable of drilling high pressure and<br />

high temperature wells at 30,000 feet whilst<br />

operating in 375 feet of water. Designed with<br />

accommodation for 120 men, the rig has the<br />

capacity for large variable loads, a large liquid mud<br />

and bulk mud capacity, extensive deck space and<br />

a large jacking capacity for preload jacking.<br />

Prior to her delivery, the jack-up rig was christened<br />

PetroJack II on March 8, 2008 by Mrs Sopee<br />

PetroJack II is the eighth unit of a series of 21 BMC<br />

Pacifi c 375 jack-up rigs in Sembcorp Marine’s<br />

orderbook since the launch of the proprietary jackup<br />

design in early 2004. Four jack-up units were<br />

contracted to <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong>, which delivered 1<br />

unit in 2007, and 17 units were placed with PPL<br />

<strong>Shipyard</strong>, another Sembcorp Marine subsidiary,<br />

which delivered 6 units to-date.<br />

Wan Hai 317 & Pontresina Containership Deliveries<br />

Twin berthing: Wan Hai 317 and Pontresina newbuilt Jubilee Class 2,646 TEU containerships at the quayside<br />

<strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> has successfully delivered Pontresina and Wan Hai 317, the yard’s seventh and eighth 2,646 TEU<br />

newbuilt containership units, to Germany’s Reederei F. Laeisz and Taiwan’s Wan Hai Lines.<br />

Wan Hai 317, which sailed away in March 2008, <strong>mar</strong>ks the sixth 2,646 TEU<br />

containership built for Wan Hai Lines following the deliveries of similarly<br />

designed sisterships Wan Hai 311, Wan Hai 312, Wan Hai 313, Wan Hai<br />

315 and Wan Hai 316 between 2005 and 2007.<br />

The successful handover of Reederei F. Laeisz’s second 2,646 TEU<br />

containership Pontresina in April 2008 follows after the delivery of sister<br />

unit Pontremoli in 2006.<br />

Built based on <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong>’s proprietary Jubilee Class 2,646 TEU design,<br />

both Wan Hai 317 and Pontresina are the largest and most sophisticated<br />

of their kind designed and built in Singapore. With a high container-carrying<br />

capacity of 2,646 TEU, including 1,688 TEU on deck and 958 TEU in hold,<br />

the 213m x 32.2m x 16.5m vessels can accommodate two tiers of highcube<br />

containers in the hold.<br />

Designed with lashing bridges on deck for greater stability during transport,<br />

each ship is equipped with 400 reefers and is capable of a high homogeneous<br />

container intake of more than 1,960 TEU at 14 tons per TEU. With the hull<br />

specially designed to minimise propeller-induced vibration, each vessel can<br />

reach high service speeds of up to 23 knots for operational performance,<br />

while achieving optimal transport effi ciency.<br />

In all, <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> has successfully delivered 10 containership units built<br />

based on the yard’s Jubilee Class design, comprising 8 container vessels in<br />

the 2,646 TEU series and 2 units in the 2,586 TEU series.<br />

Triple Service for APL Vessels<br />

<strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> has successfully completed the repairs for three APL<br />

containerships – the 64,145 dwt APL Coral, the 51,534 dwt APL Topaz, and the<br />

59,499 dwt APL Amazonite – for alliance partner Neptune Shipmanagement<br />

Services since the start of the year.<br />

After the sail-away of 5,020 TEU APL Coral in<br />

January 2008, <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> hosted 3,502<br />

TEU APL Topaz measuring 275.8m x 32.2m<br />

x 21.5m and 3,618 TEU APL Amazonite which<br />

departed around mid March and end March<br />

respectively.<br />

All three vessels underwent various drydocking<br />

and maintenance works, including hull blasting<br />

and the application of a special silicon paint,<br />

minor hatch cover repairs, routine machinery and<br />

electric equipment overhaul, cell guide repairs,<br />

as well as piping renewal.<br />

Steel renewal works at various locations were<br />

also carried out for both APL Amazonite and APL<br />

Topaz. The yard also executed cargo hold cell<br />

guide conversion for the 288.31m x 32.28m x<br />

21.5m APL Amazonite during her stay.<br />

Super Zearth Sets Sail<br />

Refreshed and rejuvenated: Super Zearth takes off after repairs at the yard<br />

Super Zearth, a 265,353 dwt Very Large Crude Carrier, took off from <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> in March 2008 after<br />

docking in the yard at end February for its 5th intermediate drydocking survey.<br />

This 333.0m x 60.0m x 28.65m vessel from<br />

Idemitsu Tanker Co. <strong>Ltd</strong>, which last visited<br />

the yard in 2005, is the fi rst double-hull<br />

oil tanker built by IHI in 1995 and the fi rst<br />

double-hull tanker owned by the company.<br />

Signifi cant repairs carried out involved<br />

the installation of the deck fi sh plate, the<br />

overhauling of the main engine, turbo and<br />

diesel generators, cargo oil and ballast<br />

pumps and as well as the renewal of the<br />

heating coil. Other routine maintenance<br />

works included the cleaning and painting<br />

of the sea chest, inspection of the tail<br />

shaft clearance and the overhauling of<br />

sea valves.<br />

February and March 2008 for repairs<br />

to ensure its continued performance<br />

on the high seas.<br />

In addition to the standard drydocking repairs, the<br />

43,131 dwt vessel with a dimension of 201.00m<br />

x 29.41 m x 16.26m also received minor steel<br />

works, routine engine room repairs and crane<br />

servicing during its stopover.<br />

Antonis I. Angelicoussis Revisits<br />

<strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> saw the return of<br />

Antonis I. Angelicoussis, a 306,085<br />

dwt oil tanker belonging to the yard’s<br />

alliance partner Chevron Shipping<br />

Company LLC, in March 2008 following<br />

its last visit in August 2005.<br />

The tanker, measuring 332m x 58.05m x 31m,<br />

came by for steel repairs in water ballast<br />

tanks and cargo oil tanks, deck cargo pipe<br />

hydro-testing, funnel painting and application<br />

of the Chevron Hall<strong>mar</strong>k, main engine exhaust<br />

gas pipe support structure repairs and radar<br />

replacement. Other repairs performed by the<br />

yard included the renewal of port and starboard<br />

anchor windlass gear covers, repairs to the<br />

cargo pump casing and the motors overhaul.<br />

Angelicousis was an incident-free success,<br />

<strong>mar</strong>ked by the smooth and timely redelivery of<br />

the vessel to its owner.<br />

Advancing The Alliance For Added Value<br />

To further strengthen the alliance partnership between Chevron Shipping Company and <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> for<br />

enhanced value creation, a two-day Advanced Supplier Relationship Preliminary Meeting was held at the<br />

<strong>Jurong</strong> Country Club from April 8 to 9, 2008.<br />

This meeting was kicked off with an<br />

introduction by Mr Christopher Brown, Fleet<br />

Technical Manager of Chevron Shipping<br />

Company, who introduced the Advanced<br />

Supplier Relationship concept and its<br />

objectives. The team structure and individual<br />

members’ roles and responsibilities were<br />

also established for the effective functioning<br />

of the alliance.<br />

The team’s close interaction and active sharing<br />

during the course of the meeting certainly paved<br />

the way for an even greater partnership to advance<br />

the Chevron-<strong>Jurong</strong> alliance to a new level.<br />

delivered WilForce, the third of a series<br />

on order by Awilco Offshore ASA, on<br />

March 19, 2008.<br />

WilForce, PPL <strong>Shipyard</strong>’s 7th BMC Pacifi c<br />

375 jack-up delivery, was constructed based<br />

on PPL <strong>Shipyard</strong>’s proprietary Baker Marine<br />

Pacifi c Class 375 design, making it capable<br />

of drilling high pressure and high temperature<br />

wells of 30,000 feet whilst operating in 375 feet<br />

of water. The rig also features extensive deck<br />

space and large jacking capacity for preload<br />

jacking, with accommodation for 120 persons.<br />

of Awilco Offshore ASA, on April 9, 2008.<br />

After completing further enhancement and<br />

modifi cation works for charterer Repsol<br />

Exploration Murzuq S.A., the rig has since<br />

set off from PPL <strong>Shipyard</strong> on April 19, 2008<br />

for an estimated fi ve-month drilling program<br />

offshore Libya.<br />

PPL & Sembawang On Track to Deliver<br />

Aban VIII Jack-up<br />

PPL <strong>Shipyard</strong> and Sembawang <strong>Shipyard</strong>, subsidiaries of<br />

Sembcorp Marine, are on track to deliver a Baker Marine<br />

Pacific Class 375 (BMC Pacific 375) design jack-up rig to Aban<br />

Singapore <strong>Pte</strong> <strong>Ltd</strong>, a subsidiary of Aban Offshore <strong>Ltd</strong> of India.<br />

The jack-up rig was christened Aban VIII by Mrs Deepa Reji Abraham, wife<br />

of Mr Reji Abraham, Managing Director of Aban Offshore <strong>Ltd</strong>, in a naming<br />

ceremony held in Sembawang <strong>Shipyard</strong> on April 19, 2008. The ceremony<br />

was attended by key representatives and stakeholders from Aban Offshore,<br />

PPL <strong>Shipyard</strong> and Sembawang <strong>Shipyard</strong> as well as distinguished guests<br />

from the shipping and offshore fraternity.<br />

The BMC Pacifi c 375 design is a proprietary design licence owned<br />

by Baker Marine <strong>Pte</strong> <strong>Ltd</strong>, a wholly owned subsidiary of PPL <strong>Shipyard</strong>.<br />

The contract is a joint-venture between PPL <strong>Shipyard</strong> and Sembawang<br />

<strong>Shipyard</strong> which leverages on the core competencies of both companies.<br />

Working in partnership, PPL <strong>Shipyard</strong> provides the proprietary design and<br />

equipment procurement whilst the construction and commissioning of the<br />

jack-up rig are executed by Sembawang <strong>Shipyard</strong>.<br />

SCM : AROUND THE YARDS<br />

This specialised rig for Aban Singapore is customised to meet owner’s<br />

requirements for operations in the Indian Ocean and is equipped with a<br />

drilling system that will enable it to drill high pressure and high temperature<br />

wells at 30,000 feet when operating in water depths of 375 feet. The rig<br />

has an accommodation capacity for 120 men.<br />

design<br />

In his welcome speech at the naming ceremony, Mr Reji Abraham,<br />

Managing Director of Aban Offshore <strong>Ltd</strong>, said: “The successful delivery<br />

of Aban VIII heralds a new milestone for Aban Offshore as we continue<br />

to build up our capability and our high quality service performance to our<br />

clients in the offshore industry. The high standards of quality, productivity<br />

Sembcorp Marineʼs 45th AGM & EGM<br />

Shareholders’ meeting in progress<br />

The 45th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held<br />

on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at Sembcorp Marine saw a strong turnout of more than 250<br />

shareholders who were eager to hear the review of the Group’s 2007 performance.<br />

The session commenced at 11am and was chaired by Mr Goh Geok Ling, Chairman of<br />

Sembcorp Marine. Both the AGM and EGM proceeded well with lively exchanges between<br />

the panel and shareholders. During the meeting, the panel was forthcoming in addressing<br />

feedback given by shareholders and the proposed resolutions set out in the agenda were<br />

passed without modifi cation.<br />

This was followed by a luncheon reception which provided a platform for interaction and<br />

networking between the shareholders and management, enabling them to better understand<br />

the Group’s strategic operations.<br />

In the Group’s active search for talent, Sembcorp Marine and its subsidiaries<br />

<strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong>, Sembawang <strong>Shipyard</strong>, PPL <strong>Shipyard</strong>, SMOE <strong>Pte</strong> <strong>Ltd</strong> and<br />

<strong>Jurong</strong> SML took part in Career & Education 2008 Fair, a key recruitment<br />

event in Singapore from February 28 to March 2, 2008.<br />

which saw over 400,000 visitors thronging<br />

the exhibition halls at Suntec International<br />

and informative visual and model displays.<br />

Marine also elaborated about the promising<br />

opportunities within its shipyards through<br />

a series of recruitment talks held at the<br />

pavilion’s built-in seminar room.<br />

The face-to-face interaction between Sembcorp<br />

Marine’s staff and jobseekers certainly bore<br />

some fruits. Response received over the four<br />

days was very positive with more than 2,100<br />

applicants from diverse backgrounds signing up<br />

for various positions within the Group’s yards.<br />

As part of its continuous drive to reach out to young talents, Sembcorp<br />

Marine took part in the 3rd MaritimeONE NetworkONE reception on March<br />

13, 2008 at Marina Mandarin.<br />

University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological<br />

University and Singapore Management<br />

University, this industry promotion event was<br />

jointly organised by the Maritime and Port<br />

Authority of Singapore (MPA), the Association<br />

of Singapore Marine Industries (ASMI), the<br />

Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) and the<br />

Singapore Shipping Association (SSA).<br />

Effective Communication for Enhanced Synergy<br />

In its efforts to develop staff and hone their interpersonal skills, <strong>Jurong</strong><br />

<strong>Shipyard</strong> organised a Communications & Relations Management workshop<br />

on the April 22 and 23, 2008 for supervisory personnel.<br />

This two-day workshop taught participants key<br />

strategies and practical skills to promote effective<br />

interpersonal communication to further enhance<br />

customer relations and team synergy. Insightful<br />

presentations and demonstrations were carried<br />

out along with group discussions to facilitate their<br />

learning process.<br />

The participants’ interest and energy levels were<br />

kept high with interesting games and stimulating<br />

role-playing exercises which served to deepen<br />

their understanding of the key concepts taught<br />

Improving Wellness with Tai Chi<br />

PPL <strong>Shipyard</strong> began another<br />

run of its weekly Tai Chi lessons<br />

starting April 16, 2008 as part of<br />

its workplace exercise programme<br />

for staff. Spanning 12 sessions,<br />

the course has proven to be<br />

very popular and has attracted<br />

employees of different races.<br />

Associated with the Chinese concept of<br />

yin and yang, Tai Chi is akin to the moving<br />

form of yoga and meditation combined and<br />

focuses on graceful movements alternating<br />

between fast and slow motions.<br />

Trip to Desaru<br />

Employees from PPL <strong>Shipyard</strong>’s Tuas<br />

yard set off on a one-day trip to Desaru,<br />

Malaysia, on April 12, 2008 to build<br />

stronger links and closer relationships<br />

During the trip, the group had a great time<br />

visiting an ostrich farm, a mango farm, a food<br />

factory and fi nally shopping at Tebrau city.<br />

Besides enjoying the local sights and delights,<br />

employees also took the opportunity to deepen<br />

their friendships with one another.<br />

fl exibility, and coordination for improved<br />

Health Screening for Early Detection<br />

Early detection and timely treatment<br />

are vital in stemming chronic illnesses.<br />

With this in mind, free annual health<br />

screening programmes are provided<br />

to <strong>Jurong</strong> <strong>Shipyard</strong> employees to help<br />

them track their health condition year<br />

on year.<br />

This year’s health screening programme was<br />

held over a week from April 21 to 26, 2008<br />

at both the Tanjong Kling and Pulau Samulun<br />

locations.<br />

Organised in conjunction with Alexandra<br />

Hospital, the yard’s healthcare partner, the<br />

health screening tested staff for chronic<br />

diseases such as high blood pressure,<br />

diabetes, high cholesterol and weight<br />

problems among others.<br />

These tests enable staff to take a peek into<br />

their health and detect traces of illnesses<br />

in their early stages. This year, participants<br />

also had an opportunity to test their eye<br />

sight to ensure that their visual faculties are<br />

performing well.<br />

A healthy snack corner was also set up to<br />

promote a well balanced diet among staff and<br />

introduce them to an alternative to sugary<br />

and preservative-fi lled snacks. At the end<br />

of the session, all staff were given a healthy<br />

goodie bag consisting of a fresh fruit, granola<br />

bar, nuts and an energy drink.<br />
