COVER STORY
Milestone Delivery of West Sirius
West Sirius, the first of a series of seven ultra-deepwater dynamic positioning 6th generation semi-submersible drilling rigs, was delivered to Seadrill Limited in March
2008 after its successful turnkey construction
Jurong Shipyard, a subsidiary of Sembcorp Marine, has set a major milestone with the delivery of West Sirius, the first of a
series of seven ultra-deepwater dynamic positioning 6th generation semi-submersible drilling rigs constructed by the yard.
The successful delivery of West Sirius to
Norwegian rig-owner Seadrill Limited at end
March 2008 is of special signifi cance being
the yard’s fi rst turnkey semi-submersible rig
building project encompassing engineering,
procurement, construction, integration and
commissioning elements.
Sealing the delivery of West Sirius: Mr Stein Diesen,
Senior Vice President of Seadrill’s Deepwater
Units Projects, and Mr Don Lee, Senior General
Manager (Offshore) of Jurong Shipyard, engaged
in a firm handshake
Currently on charter to Devon Energy for a
four-year assignment in the Gulf of Mexico,
West Sirius is the fi rst of three similar Friede &
Goldman (F&G) Ex-D design semi-submersible
units ordered by Seadrill Limited.
West Sirius was constructed using Jurong
Shipyard’s proprietary “Load-out & Mating-in-
Dock” semi-submersible construction technique.
Using this breakthrough methodology, the rig’s
upper and the lower hulls were simultaneously
constructed and subsequently skidded and
mated in the drydock.
The second sister rig, to be named West
Taurus, was also built and assembled in close
succession using the yard’s newly developed
“Transverse Skidding” technique. This
innovative new construction methodology
works in combination with the “Load-out &
Mating-in-Dock” technique to enable the fasttrack
construction and sequential assembly
of multiple semi-submersibles while meeting
high standards of quality, safety and precision.
As a result, rig delivery time has sped up by 4
months, allowing Jurong Shipyard to deliver 2
semi-submersibles a year.
West Sirius belongs to a new generation of
rigs that feature a larger operating area, a high
load carrying capacity, decreased dependence
on frequent supplies, effi ciency and improved
safety and working environment, while
minimising the exposure to the environment. The
rig incorporates sophisticated deep-sea drilling
technologies for drilling wells of up to 37,500
feet while operating in dynamic positioning
mode in water depths of up to 10,000 feet.
Designed with a usable deck space of 18,000
square feet, the rig is capable of carrying a
variable deck load of up to 8,000 tons and has
an operational displacement of 43,400 metric
tons at 17 metres draft and 46,750 metric tons
at 20 metres draft.
Key management and project team representatives commemorating the handover of West Sirius
Prior to West Sirius, the yard had successfully
built two units of 5th generation F&G Ex-D
design ultra-deepwater semi-submersible
rigs for GlobalSantaFe Corporation using the
“Load-out & Mating-in-Dock” technique.
Raroa FPSO Takes Flight
RAROA, the first of two Floating
Production Storage and Offloading
vessels (FPSOs) under conversion
at Jurong Shipyard, was delivered to
Tanker Pacific Offshore Terminals Pte
Ltd in early April 2008.
Jurong Shipyard had successfully converted
RAROA, Tanker Pacifi c’s fi rst FPSO, from
the 92,802 dwt tanker M.T. Andaman Sea.
The conversion operation encompassed the
installation of an internal turret, 3 boilers on
deck to generate 24 megawatts of power,
renewal of the entire piping and electrical
systems and installation of new process
facilities for crude separation, water injection
and chemical injection.
Upon delivery, the FPSO RAROA has since
been on charter to OMV New Zealand for
its Maari Field development project, offshore
New Zealand’s South Taranaki. Designed
to operate 15 years without drydocking,
the FPSO has the ability to process 40,000
barrels of oil per day and store up to 646,548
barrels of oil.
Conversion and life extension work is also
underway in Jurong Shipyard for Tanker
Pacifi c’s second FPSO to be named Montara
Venture from the 148,255 dwt oil tanker
M.T. Freeway. This FPSO will be capable of
operating 15 years without drydocking, with
a production capacity of 40,000 barrels per
day and a storage capacity of 900,000 barrels
of oil. Slated for completion in 3Q 2008,
Montara Venture will be chartered to Coogee
Jurong Shipyard has successfully delivered Pontresina and Wan Hai 317, the yard’s seventh and eighth 2,646 TEU
newbuilt containership units, to Germany’s Reederei F. Laeisz and Taiwan’s Wan Hai Lines.
Wan Hai 317, which sailed away in March 2008, marks the sixth 2,646 TEU
containership built for Wan Hai Lines following the deliveries of similarly
designed sisterships Wan Hai 311, Wan Hai 312, Wan Hai 313, Wan Hai
315 and Wan Hai 316 between 2005 and 2007.
The successful handover of Reederei F. Laeisz’s second 2,646 TEU
containership Pontresina in April 2008 follows after the delivery of sister
unit Pontremoli in 2006.
Built based on Jurong Shipyard’s proprietary Jubilee Class 2,646 TEU design,
both Wan Hai 317 and Pontresina are the largest and most sophisticated
of their kind designed and built in Singapore. With a high container-carrying
capacity of 2,646 TEU, including 1,688 TEU on deck and 958 TEU in hold,
the 213m x 32.2m x 16.5m vessels can accommodate two tiers of highcube
containers in the hold.
Designed with lashing bridges on deck for greater stability during transport,
each ship is equipped with 400 reefers and is capable of a high homogeneous
container intake of more than 1,960 TEU at 14 tons per TEU. With the hull
specially designed to minimise propeller-induced vibration, each vessel can
reach high service speeds of up to 23 knots for operational performance,
while achieving optimal transport effi ciency.
In all, Jurong Shipyard has successfully delivered 10 containership units built
based on the yard’s Jubilee Class design, comprising 8 container vessels in
the 2,646 TEU series and 2 units in the 2,586 TEU series.
