Where do You
live?
Nkroful
kroful holds a special place in the
Nhistory of Ghana. It is the birthplace
and initial burial place of Ghana's rst
Prime Minister Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Nkroful
means “new village”. This was to refer to the
settler's new home led by Chief BrommahTuen I.
Nkroful is a village in the Ellembelle District,
located near Axim in the Nzema East Municipal
of the Western Region. It stands inland 5 km
(3 miles) from the coastal highway, from the
Essiama village junction turnoff.
The rst settlers were forced to move, after
there was no room for expansion in their old
village. They moved to Nkroful because the soil
then was fertile and gold in abundance. The
entire Nkroful was moved from “Sardid”
literally meaning old village in the local dialect
Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was born in Nkroful in
1909. He spent his early childhood before
leaving eventually for the capital, Accra. He
was overthrown as President of Ghana and his
subsequently passed on. His remains in Nkroful
till date, serves as an attraction for tourists who
visit the community. Indigenes have done a
good job to maintain and improve upon other
Nkrumah-related souvenirs to make the
community a place to visit.
The people of Nkroful are amiable and take
great pride in the spot in the history of Ghana.
All over the community are landmarks made in
honour of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Perhaps it's
intended to serve as a form of inspiration for
the youth who form a sizeable chunk of the
area's population, especially students of the
Nkroful Agriculture Secondary School.
Nkroful boasts of it’s rich natural resources, yet
very little is eventually turned over for the
benet of the locals. Mining is the predominant
occupation here. Residents are predominantly
farmers. However, limited access to major
markets and a thriving black market is denying
them of badly needed revenue generated.
The local authority has also contributed to
maintaining the traditional heritage of the
town. The overriding imagery one is greeted
with is the embodiments of Dr. Kwame
Nkrumah. Nkroful is also home to the mystical
River Subre, and it is close to three forest
reserves – Draw River Forest Reserve, Ndumfri
Forest Reserve, and Shelter Forest Reserve
which is situated 83km west of Takoradi, in the
hinterland of Ghana West Coast. The area
around Nkroful is full of natural resources such
as oil palm, coconut palm, cocoa and gold.
Enjoy a tour of Nkroful town, learning about
the way of life of this community of people
from the Nzema ethnic group. Learn about their
economic livelihood activities, as you
experience farming and coconut oil production,
using local methods. If your timing is right, you
may be able to watch traditional funeral rites,
a naming ceremony, a traditional wedding,
treasured dances or other sacred rituals. Also,
for one week between September and
October, you may also be able to partake in
the celebration of the Kundum Festival.
How about a tasty dish of akyeke (moist
tapioca) with tilapia sh and salsa-like pepper
sauce? This and other mouth-watering dishes
abound in Nkroful. Other popular dishes
include fufu (large dumplings made from
pounded cassava and plantain), kenkey
(steamed balls of fermented corn, wrapped in
banana leaves), and banku (boiled balls of
fermented cassava and corn). These starchy
and grainy foods are often served with
delicious sh and vegetable stews and soups.
Every proud Ghanaian and African, for that
matter, must visit Nkroful and its surroundings to
appreciate nature and treat yourself, your
family to pure natural beauty and the unique
culture of these wonderful people.

INTRODUCTION
Ghana has gradually become what I call “a rice
country”. I cannot pinpoint exactly when we
gained this status, however, my visit to most
Ghanaian kitchens revealed that most homes
have bags of rice hoarded in the kitchen. This
phenomenon for quite some years now is
evident on our streets as most food vendors are
either selling “waakye” (local name for rice and
beans), plain rice, fried rice or jollof rice just to
mention a few.
I believe this trend has been triggered by the
fact that most people are very busy lately and
cannot “waste” time preparing dishes that
requires more time to prepare. Rice is also easily
available on the market. Others also love rice
simply because it can be eaten with almost every
sauce. Be it soups or stews.
So my rice lovers here you go!!! This is a simple
way of cooking your favorite fried rice dish. It
can be enjoyed with chicken or sh.
DIRECTIONS
Place water and rice in a saucepan.
Pour water into a boil. Once the
water is boiling, cover the
saucepan, turn the heat to "low" and simmer
for about 20 minutes, or until all water is
absorbed.
Heat the oil in a skillet on medium-high heat.
Sautee the onions until almost soft. Reduce the
heat to medium-low. Add the peas, carrots
and corn and sautee together for about a
minute. Add the boullion, pepper, thyme and
curry powder - stir all together.
INGREDIENTS
WHITE RICE, LONG GRAIN, 2 CUPS
WATER, TAP, 3.75 CUPS
CANOLA OIL, 2 TBSP
ONIONS, RAW, 1 CUP, CHOPPED
KNORR CHICKEN (OR VEGETABLE) BOUILLON, 2 TSPS.
PEPPER, BLACK, 1 TSP.
THYME, GROUND, 1 TSPS.
CURRY POWDER, 1/2 TBSP.
YELLOW SWEET CORN, CANNED, 1/3 CUP
PEAS AND CARROTS, CANNED, 2/3 CUP
One spoonful at a time, fold the rice into the vegetable mix. When the rice is coated yellow, bring the heat
back up to medium-high and "fry" the rice for about 1-2 minutes. Be careful not to burn it! Serve
immediately. It can be enjoyed with other accompaniments.
If you love to try new things, just try eating with fried plantain or fried yam. It’s sumptuous!
MAGAZINE TALKS TO
ACTRESS MARTHA ANKOMAH
By: Pamela Ofori-Boateng
n her salon at Tesano, one of Ghana's best actresses opens up about many years on the acting path, the highs and the lows of life and the
Ibeauty of aspiring and making it.
When I arrived at her salon she warmly welcomed me with a broad smile similar to the smile she portrays in her movies when she meets a new
guy. "Good to see you" she says as she ushers me into a sitting area in the plush salon-Martha's Place Beauty Salon.
Martha Ankomah was born and raised by Christian parents. Her mother was a Pentecost, whilst her dad who is late, was an Adventist so she
started Sunday school very early. This instilled in her the fear of God at a tender age. She however, joined the International Central Gospel
Church (ICGC) later in her life when she fell in love with Pastor Mensah Otabil's inspirational messages. Her mom became a single parent
taking care of her and her two brothers while she was in Junior High School (JHS). By 14, she had joined a drama group and had started
stage performances at the National Theater during the Fun world days.
Late last year, she landed a contract to become the face of an international beverage brand, Vitamilk Viora. What strikes me most about her
alluring personality is that she looks really calm unlike the "hard girl" nature she portrays in her movies. Throughout our interview she
sounded very religious as she answered each question by rst talking about the grace of God.
PAM: Can you take me through schools you have
attended?
MARTHA: I completed Adabraka Presbyterian Junior High
School. Then I attended Labone Senior High School and
nally Jayee University College where I did Marketing as
a course.
PAM: How did Acting start for you?
MARTHA: I was introduced into acting by a cousin at a
very tender age. This cousin of mine called Harry Amonoo
took me to the National Theatre in 1994 there about
where I joined the Harrisco Drama Group and started
stage drama in Funworld and Kiddafest . When I went to
Senior High School I also joined the Theatre Programme
for Schools (TPS), where we were doing stage drama for
Senior High Schools. After the stage drama, I started
doing series like St. James Hotel, Where is your Mobile?
All that glitters, Suncity and others. Acting became
something that I was developing a passion for so whenever
I heard of any auditions I go and try my luck.
PAM: You were in the reality show Next Movie Star and
you emerged the second runner up. How did you do it?
MARTHA: It was just by the grace of God and my talent
that helped me pull through. I was in my rst year in the
university when I entered the reality show.
PAM: Did Next Movie Star reality show catapult you to
fame?
MARTHA: Next Movie Star didn't do much for me but you
get to meet different kinds of people and also learn from
the directors who came to train us. When you come from
Next Movie Star, It does not make you a star. You still have
to go for auditions. That's what people don't realize. That
because you have been on TV for 30 days you are there,
forget it! It's just the grace of God.
PAM: How was life for you and your siblings when your
mother became a single parent?
MARTHA: It wasn't easy. You have to help her (Mother).
You just needed to be a good girl to help your mom-you
have to be self-discipline so when she asks you to carry
something on your head to go and sell, you don't have to
shout or say you're shy. You just have to do it because you
know you're helping your family. And me being the rst
born I had no choice than to help and I thank God so much
that I didn't go wayward- I didn't end up as a bad girl
during those trying moments. I just realized that it was an
opportunity to learn the hard way of life and it has really
helped me, though it was difcult at the beginning but
God being so good something good came out of it.
PAM: Quite recently I have been seeing your commercials
for Vitamilk Viora on TV and on bail boards across the
country. How did you secure such a huge contract with an
international brand?
MARTHA: I got the contract through a friend who also
introduced me to another friend who needed someone with
13 www.mygong.net
Personality Profile
a good image to be the face of Vitamilk Viora.
PAM: How was it like shooting an advert abroad?
MARTHA: The experience was good. We shot it in Asia.
We went to Thailand in a ve day shoot.
PAM: What's your view on the Ghanaian movie industry?
MARTHA: The industry is doing well. We are doing very
well. We are better than before with the kind of movies
coming out these days. Our story lines are moving from the
“Juju” kind of movies. We just need sponsorship to promote
our movies.
PAM: We haven't been seeing you on our screens for quite
some time now. Why?
MARTHA: I'm not doing a lot these days because I'm trying
to be very selective about the kind of movies I do. If I
should get myself into any movie, the script and role must
be very good. . It doesn't mean I'm not going to play any
bad role. I'm an actress and as such I have to be versatile.
I don't mind the role but the script should be one with good
moral values and one that people can watch with their
families.
PAM: What motivated you to establish this salon? It's a
really a nice one with modern equipment.
MARTHA: Haha! Thanks. I love to look beautiful and love
to make people look beautiful too. Haha it's funny but
right from childhood I think all my friends were
hairdressers. I also wanted to have my own company and
employ people at the same time and render services to
the public as well.
PAM: Are you currently working on some new projects?
MARTHA: Yes I'm going on set next month for some movie
shoot in Nigeria and here in Ghana. I can't wait for the
premier of my latest movie called "The Night Shift" which I
starred alongside Majid Michel and Shatawale real name
Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jnr.
PAM: Are you embarking on some social responsibility
activities?
MARTHA: With the support from Vitamilk, I organized
some get together for children with autism and hope to do
same for them this December.
PAM: What are your hobbies?
MARTHA: I love to talk, watch movies, listen to gospel
music and read.
PAM: Who are your favorite actors and actresses in
Ghana?
MARTHA: I love to act with Majid, Prince David Osei and
Adjetey Annan. They are so cool.
PAM: Your favorite actors and actresses in the world?
MARTHA: Meryl Streep, Angelina Jolie, Denzel Washington
and Kerry Washington.
PAM: Where do you see yourself in the next ve years in
the industry?
MARTHA: To be at the Oscars, Red carpet.
PAM: What's the future for Martha's Place Beauty Salon?
MARTHA: I want to have Martha's world where I would
have a restaurant, washing bay, training school all under
one roof.
PAM: Wow that's great!
MARTHA: Yeah. I also want to have a Christian TV station
which would be called Maranatha Broadcasting Network
which will impact on the lives of people and draw them
closer to God.
PAM: Any plans for school?
MARTHA: Yea, I plan of having my Masters in
Communications very soon and also to obtain another
Masters in acting.
PAM: What's your kind of man?
MARTHA: In ve years' time I would love to have a
wonderful husband who is God-loving, God- fearing, kindhearted,
hardworking, nice looking and caring.
PAM: Your advice for young people especially the ladies
who want to launch a career in acting.
MARTHA: Most young girls are desperate these days. They
have to know that all that glitters is not gold and life is not
a bed of roses so if people feel like acting is easy, I'll say
it's easy so far as you have the talent and the grace of
God, why not? But you shouldn't be desperate because
you want to be on TV; you shouldn't allow people to take
advantage of you because you want to be on TV. People
take advantages of the ladies because they want to be on
TV. Ask yourself how many people are you going to sleep
with before you become a star? Then you have a long way
to go. It's only God who can make you shine because He
created the stars and He knows the ones that actually
shines brighter. So if you don't have faith in God, you are
not patient enough and ready to learn, you will end up
nowhere. So just be patient, have faith, don't be desperate
to be on TV, take your time, and just don't give up on your
dreams. Keep practicing and try any auditions. Don't think
about money for now. The rst time I acted I had really
nothing for some time before the producers started paying
me. It takes a lot of sacrice.
PAM: What's your take on the rise of bleaching among our
young women?
MARTHA: Hmm! It's better most of the youth coming up
stop bleaching and tattooing because it doesn't really
help. Because you want to be on TV you want to become
Snow White? haha. What if a movie role or a contract
comes up and they needed your face but your skin colour
is going against you? Sometimes you have to think about
the future before taking any decision.
“
It's only God who can
make you shine
because He created
the stars and He
knows the ones that
actually shines brighter
TO
ALL
OUR
LOVELY
MOTHERS
OUT THERE
“All that I am, or hope to be,
I owe to my angel mother”.
-ABRAHAM LINCOLN-
other's Day is a modern celebration honoring one's own mother, motherhood, maternal bonds, and
Mthe inuence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, but
in Ghana, the rst Sunday in the month of May.
It complements similar celebrations honouring family members, such as father's day and siblings' day
elsewhere.
Over the years, the celebration of Mothers in Ghana has been characterized with showering our mother's
with gifts cards, items, taking them out to special places and perhaps what the individual feels will make
his or her mother happy on that day.
Simply put, it's a day where the world does everything humanly possible to make our mother's feel they
are very much appreciated for their support, nurturing and pep talk through life.
On this special day for our mothers and motherhood in general, we urge you to put a BIG smile on that
woman's face. Let her know , her efforts to shape your life has never been in vain . And yeh right,
sometimes we know we step on their toes here and there .It’s ok to use this opportunity to say sorry to her
and make her day bright on this special occasion.
Don't forget her smiles and blessings can open doors for you.
To all our mum's we say Happy Mother's Day!
“Becoming a mother makes you the mother of all children. From now on each wounded,
abandoned, frightened child is yours. You live in the suffering mothers of every race
and creed and weep with them. You long to comfort all who are desolate”.
Fashion
Did you know that you could be the
cause of Ghana's economic woes?
'Huh? Me? But I'm not a politician'
you might say.
Well hold on. Let's go and see a play.
Just you and I. And oh, you get to act in
the play. Yaaaaay!
Here's the script.
SCENE 1:
You are a textiles company owner. You
invest a lot of money into ensuring that
your beautiful wax prints are of the best
quality. Your prints are loved. Patronized
by the world. A national treasure. You
employ a signicant number of people
and your contribution to the national
GDP is substantial.
SCENE 2
Bam! Someone decides to be clever. They are going to
copy your designs. But they don't believe in quality as
much as you do. Heck they are only entering the
business to feed off the market you have so tirelessly
built. They have no values, no promise of quality.
SCENE 3
Your evil competitor has found a way to duplicate your
designs. They make the prints cheap and ood your
markets with them. To the untrained eye the prints look
the same. So of course you start losing out. Sales gures
are fast dropping! You need to act fast. 'Surely this is
illegal! You report to the authorities and watch in disgust
as they do practically nothing about it.
SCENE 4
Slowly but surely your sales reach rock bottom. Now
you're almost out of business. You begin shutting down
several of your production lines. You've already laid
down half of your staff and it's looks like many more
will have to follow. The once vibrant manufacturing plant
has now been replaced by a depressing silent spell.
SCENE 5
You go shopping one day. You see
one of your closest friends
shopping. You start walking towards
her. Then you stop in your tracks....
she's busy buying prints from your
unscrupulous competitor. You are
livid. How could she be so disloyal?
Doesn't she realize that by so doing
she's helping them put you out of
business? How can she support the
business of one who steals your
designs? You leave the market
broken-hearted. You'll never be
able to forgive your friend.
Now let's reveal who the real life
characters are.
Textiles company owner-all the local
textiles companies Unscrupulous
competitor -Asian textile companies
which steal designs for their prints.
Wondering who the disloyal friend
is? You guessed right. It's YOU!
It's YOU every time you patronise
pirated prints.
Here are the facts, dear readers.
There are Asian companies which
are copying designs of prints from
our local textile industries. They sell
them under several labels, the most
popular of which is called 'HIGH
TARGET'. They are cheaper and of
inferior quality.
Our markets are ooded with these
pirated prints and like the disloyal
friend in the sketch above,
Ghanaians happily patronize them.
This has serious effects on our local
textile industry which directly
affects our unemployment and
productivity as a whole.
The time has come for us to make
conscious purchasing decisions. The
time has come to say no to pirated
prints.
At WEAR Ghana we use only
authentic African prints and this is
one way in which we continue to
contribute to building our dear
country, Ghana.
Getting The Perfect
MAKE-UP BASE
By: Jessica Addai
AKE UP BASE also referred to as a primer, it's a
Mcosmetic product that is applied to the skin before
foundation or concealer. It is typically a clear, matte
nish or a very light tint. Its purpose is to smooth out lines,
wrinkles or blemishes, and give the foundation or concealer a
smooth palette for application. It also helps to absorb oil, and
cuts down on shine throughout the day, which can help the
makeup last longer.
Getting a awless makeup means following a few simple, yet
extremely important steps. It is no longer a secret that a perfect,
strong make-up base can do wonders and represents a vital
precursory stage in all the make-up process. If properly chosen
Prior to purchasing, you should try and see which color
atters you the most as a make-up base must be
invisible. Well, almost! Still, what we want to get is a
glowing skin, without imperfections, looking as natural
as possible.
The skin acts as an amazing shield having to face the
aggressive attacks of noxious external factors every
day. Based on your skin type, makeup base comes in
three different forms: liquid, creamy and powdered.
However, these three main textures have been the
starting point for the creation of other combinations,
such as mousse, mineral or humectant bases. Moreover,
a make-up base can contain special ingredients
suitable for various skin conditions. Therefore, we have
a make-up base for every skin, whether it is sensitive,
dry or oily. Don't forget to apply the make-up base
after cleansing and moisturizing.
To create a perfect base of your skin, you should rst
apply the make-up base or primer to your forehead,
cheeks, nose, and the tip of your chin. Use your middle
and ring ngers up to the second joint and spread the
base evenly with a gentle massaging motion, reaching
up to around your eyes.
APPLY CONCEALER. Concealer can be applied
before or after foundation, but you can choose at what
stage you apply concealer. Apply a pink toned
concealer under the eyes and pat (not rub) it in with
your ring nger. Then, take your regular concealer and
use it to conceal any additional pigmentation or
blemishes that you may have.
APPLY YOUR FOUNDATION. The key to a perfect
base is a perfect foundation. Perfect foundation means
choosing a foundation that matches your skin tone and
skin type. So go to your local make-up counter and get
them to match you. To apply your foundation, you can
use your ngers, a brush or a sponge. Use whatever is
most comfortable for you!
VOALA! YOU ARE DONE ! Follow these steps and
you'll have the perfect base.
A new Crossover, Trailbrazing in the Segment
he all new Nissan X-trail has exhibited a clear
Tillustration of rened character and a modern
appearance that inspires emotion and gives an
aura of strength. Within this context of my
observations, I would conclude that the new Nissan
X-trail was specically designed to conquer new
markets and appeal to a wide customer base, and
features a brand new modern crossover design.
Having this in mind, the brand developed a
specication of ambitious targets at the Nissan's
Kyushu, which is already conferred with echelons like
United Kingdom's 2014, What Car? Readers' Choice
Award, plant in Japan. The crossover by Nissan's
heritage combines a unique driving experience, with
strong design and benets of use.
At its third generation, the all new Nissan X-trail
confronted the challenge to integrate its design DNA
to position itself at the heart of its segment, for a
global clientele, by retaining crossover leadership of
Nissan. The Nissan family has become enriched by
the re-tinkering of the new X-trail as model that has
come out celebrating its presence with this crossover
sized all-wheel drive that features an imposing body
styling, generous features, superior drivability,
generous off-load ability and all-terrain suitability
have carefully adapted to fulll the expectations of
the different markets within its segment.
To retain Nissan's best quality design and
development criteria, the design and development
of all new Nissan X-trail was vigorous guided at
every stage by this last stage to incorporate Nissan's
coupled with high performance, safety features and
fuel economy would make it a key contender in its
heritage comes with fresh ideas and technologies
inspired by the brand's groundbreaking vehicles, initiated
by the original Murano and bolstered Qashal, will
eventually become the leading model in the segment over
the next two to three years” Chris Tsegah, Group
Marketing Manager, Auto Part, the brand handler of
Nissan in Ghana.
UNIQUE DESIGN THAT MARRIES ELEGANCE WITH VIGOR
The body streamlines features curves that may dene its
personality as model design cues that have shaped its
appearance. To achieve a total reection of iconic image
of crossover, Renault-Nissan Alliance Common Module
Family (CMF) platform drew on superior expertise in
crossover production, a union that only makes Nissan X-trail
the recipient of superior design legacy with strong
credibility, as the rst vehicle of this kind, that is endowed
with premium design and amenities, is likely to be a true
trailblazer in compact segment.
With its iconic design language, Nissan X-trail has created
a vehicle with combination of agility, versatility, multi-role
ability with condent styling at the service of unique
generations of city dwellers that love the city, live the city,
creating the city as they still loving to escape from it. After
close observation of the new Nissan X-trail's design and
power train, I can conclude that the vehicle marries the
exceptional elegance and renement of a crossover and
the practicality of an SUV, with the multi-role capability
and unusual spaciousness for this market segment.
THE CHANGING
BUSINESS
LANDSCAPE IN
AFRICA
IT'S
ABOUT
TIME, AFRICA
Apart from Chinese businesses, most other
international firms are still debating Africa's
potential for large investments.
This is primarily because Africa is fragmented into
many different countries, and even in aggregate, the
continent has a fairly small economy. In adition, the
continent's economies are too poorly run to attract
"firms of integrity". But there has been a sustained sea
of change over the last few decades.
Africa's journey, from "The Hopeless Continent" and "Africa Rising" to
"Aspiring Africa" on the covers of The Economist in May 2000, December
2011 and March 2013) respectively has been nothing but eventful. With
some of the world's fastest-growing economies, Africa has become the
newest destination for emerging markets investors. From 2001 to 2014,
about 4 out of the 10 fastest-growing economies in the world were in
Sub-Saharan Africa. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) even expects
other African nations to make its way into that list by next year. The
economies of most African nations have grown by an average of 5 - 6%
per annum, spiralling continental growth.
The situation of Africa transitioning into the 'greens'
subtly began to change during the period 1990-2005.
Profound macroeconomic reforms tamed ination and
opened economies to international trade. More patchily,
the regulatory environment facing international business
also improved. Public ratings, such as the World Bank's
Doing Business surveys, Transparency international's
Corruption perception index (CPI) enabled African
governments to benchmark and peer review their
performance and pressurize the recalcitrants. As the
global commodity boom surged to its 2008 crescendo,
many African countries were well positioned to harness
the spike in their export revenues for growth.
That upturn in national growth rates was mirrored in the
increased protability of companies operating in Africa.
Indeed, three distinct sources of data indicate that
returns were higher in Africa than in other regions. One
was a comprehensive study of the publicly traded
companies operating in
Africa for the period 2002-
07, mostly in the
manufacturing and services
sectors. It found that these
companies' average return
on capital was around twothirds
higher than that of
comparable companies in
China, India, Indonesia, and
Vietnam. UNCTAD report, on
the foreign direct investment
of US companies, showed
that they were getting a
higher return on their African
investments than on those in
other regions. Finally, analysis of a series of surveys of
several thousand manufacturing rms around the
developing world found that, at the margin, capital
investment had a higher return in Africa.
The continent is incredibly rich in natural resources. It has
huge, untapped reserves of natural gas and oil (10% of
world's reserves), and largely unexploited hydroelectric
power. It's the home to vast gold, platinum, uranium, iron
ore, copper and diamond reserves. Currently, only 10%
29
www.mygong.net
Business
of Africa's arable land is being cultivated, yet it holds
around 60% of the world's cultivable land. As such, Africa
has become a magnet for foreign direct investment (fdi).
Africa also has the advantage of a large, relatively
cheap educated labour force. The continent is undergoing
a demographic transformation with youth as its theme;
there is a very high proportion of Africans in their 20s
and 30s with fewer dependents - both old and young -
that will play out over the next decade.
There is stability in terms of governance; the countries
which witnessed terrible periods of unrest have emerged
as success stories. There are better policies in place, trade
has improved, and so has the business environment.
According to the un world population prospects report,
Africa will be the fastest-growing continent "by any
measure" over the course of the 21st century. Investors
are understandably interested.
Africa diligently weathered the economic storms. Led by
its two largest economies, South Africa and Nigeria, most
countries had built prudent scal positions culminating in
their remarkable divorce from the Briton wood Institutions.
Nigeria had freed itself from debt and built up over $70
billion of foreign-exchange reserves. Further, the adverse
impact of the crisis through commodity prices lasted less
than a year for Africa. Globally, excerpt gold, commodity
prices rapidly bounced back and seem to have stabilized
around levels markedly higher than those in the decades
before the boom, underwritten by growing Asian
economies and their corresponding need for commodities
and other supplies.
The contrast between Nigeria's dysfunctional management
of its rst oil boom of 1973-83 and its brilliant
management of the second boom of 2003-08 cautions
against the gloomy cynicism that until recently bedevilled
investor thinking about Africa. The road to economic
transformation is undoubtedly likely to be a bumpy one,
but many African societies have learned both from their
own histories and from the prosperity of other once-poor
countries. Unlike the externally dictated structuraladjustment
programs of the 1980s, the key struggles over
economic policy will be internal to African societies.
To date, Africa has lacked the spectacular regional role
models of economic success that so beneted Asia. Even in
Rwanda, a landlocked, crowded country lacking in natural
resources, a leadership committed to economic
transformation has been able to sustain a growth rate
around 10 percent. In some of the continents economies
with more favourable fundamentals, even faster growth
rates will be sustained. Such successes will have a
profound inuence on the neighbours, just as occurred in
Asia.
If indeed there is a positive between democracy and
economic transformation, then the continent of Africa is
arrived. More recently, some African leaders, such as
President Museveni of Uganda, President Kagame of
Rwanda, and Prime Minister Meles of Ethiopia, have built
strong credentials for a commitment to the economic
transformation of their societies while being ardent
democrats. Africa's coming economic successes will be in
societies that have won the struggle for accountable
democratic government. But others will be in societies in
which autocratic leaders have become ambitious for
national goals rather than merely for power and
privilege; expect some African repetitions of Malaysia's
experience. After President Nkrumah and few others,
Africa has lacked the spectacular regional role models of
economic success that so beneted Asia. But it is now
starting to get them.
Africa's economic potential extends well beyond
commodity exporting. Africa will soon be the last
remaining major low-wage region. It has an enormous
coastline, more proximate to both European and North
American markets than Asia is. Over the past three
decades, offshoring shifted labour-intensive
manufacturing from the OECD countries to Asia. In the
next decade, expect the same process to begin shifting
these activities from Asia to Africa. Contrary to fears that
the "Dutch disease'' must inevitably make non resource
exports uncompetitive, the Asian examples of Malaysia
and Indonesia have demonstrated that successful
exporting of natural resources can be entirely compatible
with successful exporting of light manufactures.
From Africa's independence, beginning in the mid-1950s,
until around the turn of the millennium, the OECD
prospered while Africa stagnated. Africa may be on the
cusp of a reversal of fortunes. Indeed, Africa is now
growing markedly more rapidly than the OECD.'' A future
of continued rapidly rising prosperity for the OECD looks
less assured than it did before the global crisis, whereas
several decades of high growth looks to be quite a likely
scenario for Africa. At present, the typical investment
portfolio has massive exposure to the OECD countries and
negligible exposure to Africa. This looks unlikely to be
appropriate for the coming decades''. Although the routes
may be muddy and rough as any journey, Africa has what
it takes; Vision, resources, discipline, personnel and the
transformational leadership to drive this desired agenda.
Africa needs it more than ever. Africa cannot wait,
THE ACCIDENTAL PRE NANCY
Cristina Nehring was thrilled to meet
a guy, less thrilled to get pregnant,
terried when he left-and ecstatic
about the child who changed everything.
"Anything can happen in life, especially
nothing." These words hung above my desk
for years. A quote from French writer
Michel Houellebecq, they chilled me with
their threat of the eventless existence that
lay ahead were I not driven, smart and
daring enough to make things happen. By
"things" I meant legendary love affairs.
Travel. A soaring literary career. Not for
me the noisy nursery-my children would be
books.
I made strides toward the life I wanted:
just enough writerly success to steel my
resolve through years of poverty, just
enough travel to make me homeless in
several countries, just enough love to break
my heart. But then I really made something
happen-and it was not at all what I'd
envisioned.
I'd gone to the island of Crete to report a
story for a travel magazine and fallen for
a wild-haired boy-ardent, tempestuous,
penniless. Soon I was pregnant,
contraceptive pills notwithstanding. When I
leaped to phone an abortion clinic, he
stayed my hand: "I'll do anything for this
child," he said. "My family, sister, cousins,
nieces will do anything."
I loved him. I thought of friends trying to
get pregnant. And I decided the brave
thing to do was play the cards I'd been
dealt. I asked him to join me for the birth in
Paris, where I had a job, health insurance
and a tiny garret I called home.
Eurydice was born during an April
THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
hailstorm. Her father was in the delivery
room and photographed her rst moments.
Then he abandoned her. Eurydice had
Down syndrome. When she and I returned
home after two weeks in the hospital, her
father repaired to Crete, changed his
number and told his family never to speak
to me again. Thus ended life as I knew it.
Caring for a disabled infant was all
consuming. In cafés where I used to write, I
now tossed Dice from side to side to calm
her colic; when I had to go to the toilet, I
perched her on my thighs. Privacy?
Romance? Intellectual life? Gone, I
believed-for good. People with DS often
remain with their parents for life.
But before long my daughter began to
laugh. Her rst, and for many years, her
only, vocalization was the sweet, wet
smack of a kiss. Rather than make me
weaker, she made me stronger. I'd stand
over Eurydice's crib as she slept with a
smile on her lips, marveling that I was a
safe space for this most fragile of
creatures. Me: the child-woman, full of
learned helplessness and debilitating
anxiety. I was a protector.
The more you do, I soon saw, the more you
can do. I took Dice on my travel
assignments; she came to Morocco and
Scotland, Corsica and Tunisia, Sardinia,
Greece and America; she slept in Irish
hotel drawers, had diapers changed on
baggage trolleys and spent time with a
maoso on an island off the coast of
Naples. I was prouder of our travels
together than I'd ever been of my
endlessly easier solo adventures.
By the time Eurydice and I moved our
suitcases into an L.A. isolation room for
32
www.mygong.net
chemotherapy to treat the acute myeloid
leukemia with which she had been
diagnosed, we'd packed more life into her
two years than others do into 50.
Nonverbal though she was, she'd become
my best friend, my accomplice, my
heartthrob. I could not imagine her taking
any voyage on her own: I loved her
enough to die with her if death was her
next destination.
Eurydice laughed her way through chemo,
giving me the greatest lesson in courage I
have ever known. Never again will I fear a
needle, or blood, or scars. Three ports
took their turn in her tiny chest to receive
the toxins intended to kill her cancer-which
they did. When we got out of isolation
after seven months, we catapulted to an
empty lot adjoining the hospital, dug our
ngers into the bare earth and exulted in
the dirt under our nails. Farewell to the
sterility of the hospital room! Mud, dust,
dung-welcome!
Life is a series of chapters, and our
business is to write them as boldly, as
imaginatively, as unapologetically as
possible. So many people stare at the
same screens, storefronts and story lines
their whole lives. When change-even for
the harder-touches us, I say we're lucky.
My life with my daughter has been
everything I did not believe I wanted. It
slowed my writing career, cut into
hundredths my occasions for romance,
limited the time I have to waste. But it has
provoked insights, wisdom I would never
have obtained otherwise, brought into my
sphere only the best of men and
multiplied-exponentially-the love I have to
live.
Relationship
RELATIONSHIP
GUIDELINES we usually Overlook
“To be fully seen by somebody, then, and be loved anyhow – this is a
human offering that can border on miraculous.”
-Elizabeth Gilbert-
Several years ago, on their 50th
anniversary, my 87-year-old
grandfather looked at my 84-yearold
grandmother and said, “This
right here, our relationship, this is my
greatest accomplishment.”
My grandfather's words have
always remained with me. They
were beautifully romantic, but more
importantly, they were delightfully
true. Healthy relationships are
accomplishments. They take
commitment and work, and two
people who are willing to meet in
the middle and put in the necessary
effort.
1. Let go of old wounds through
forgiveness.
Every moment of your life you are
either growing or dying and when
you are physically healthy; it's a
choice, not fate. The art of
maintaining happiness in your life
and relationships relies on the ne
balancing act of holding on and
letting go. Yes, sometimes people
you trust (including yourself) will hurt
you. Being hurt is something you
can't avoid, but being continuously
miserable is always a choice.
Forgiveness is the remedy. You have
to let go of what's behind you
before you can grasp the goodness
in front of you.
2. Come clean when you make a
mistake.
An honest heart is the beginning of
everything that is right with this
world. The most honorable people
of all are not those who never make
mistakes, but those who admit to
them when they do, and then go on
and do their best to right the
wrongs they've made. In the end,
being honest might not always win
you a lot of friends and lovers, but it
will always keep the right ones in
your life.
3. Give others the space to make
their own decisions.
Stop judging others by your own past.
Never act, judge, or treat people like
you know them better than they know
themselves. They are living a
different life than you are. What
might be good for one person may
not be good for another. What might
be bad for one person might change
another person's life for the better.
Allow the people in your life to make
their own mistakes and their own
decisions.
4. Say less when less means more.
It takes some courage to stand up
and speak; it takes even more
courage to open your mind and listen.
Pay attention and be a good listener.
Your ears will never get you in
trouble. The people in your life often
need a listening ear more than they
need a rambling voice. And don't
listen with the intent to reply, hear
what is being said with the intent to
understand. You are as beautiful as
the love you give, and you are as
wise as the silence you leave behind.
5. Let your love and trust
overpowers your fear.
You never lose by loving; you lose by
holding back. No relationship is
impossible until you refuse to give it a
chance. Love means giving someone
the chance to hurt you, but trusting
them not to. Without this trust, a
relationship cannot survive. You
cannot just believe what you fear from
others; you have to believe in the good
faith of others. If you are ever going to
have someone trust you, you must feel
that you can trust them too.
6. Accept, don't expect.
Unconditional acceptance is something
we want, but rarely ever give out.
Remember, people never do anything
that is out of character. They may do
things that go against your expectations,
but what people do reveals exactly who
they are. Never force your expectations
on people, other than the expectation
that they will be exactly who they are.
Who they are is not what they say or
what you have come to expect, it is who
they reveal themselves to be. Either you
accept them as they are, or you move on
without them.
7. Let the wrong ones go.
Know your worth! When you give your
time to someone who doesn't respect
you, you surrender pieces of your heart
you will never get back. All failed
relationships hurt, but losing someone
who doesn't appreciate and respect you
is actually a gain, not a loss. Some
people come into your life temporarily
simply to teach you something. They
come and they go and they make a
difference. It's perfectly okay that
they're not in your life anymore. You
now have more time to focus on the
relationships that truly matter.
Remember, even the healthiest
relationships have small aws. Being too
black and white about the quality and
health of a relationship spells trouble.
Accept the fact that there will always be
difculties present, but you can still focus
on the good. Instead of constantly
looking for signs of what's not working in
your relationship, what you need to do is
look for signs of what is, and then use
this as a solid foundation to build upon.
EDUCATIONAL
DAILY
PRACTICE
- Be prosperous.
DO EACH OF THESE THINGS EVERY DAY.
Based on the ideas and daily practice developed by James Altucher.
n important foundation of life's success is
Athe outlook of the individual regarding the
hope and expectations for his or her life.
For most of us though, much of what is practiced
day to day towards achieving plans and goals is
left to what life brings to us, as opposed to what
we bring into our moments, days, weeks and
months. I do not include years here because for
the purposes of this discussion, that is eternity.
Eternity because 12 months, or one year is a
denitive period in which you access success or
failure of what has been specically achieved.
From the beginning where hopes were expressed
or internalized, it is important to develop metrics
and parameters that will help to take us to that
which we expect to achieve and celebrate.
According to Kevin Elliot, an admirer of Altucher's, a
productive routine can lead to good habits, a bucket of
achievables, and a life of happiness. Success often trails
people that are happy, talented and smart-working (not
necessarily hard working), and above all, connected.
Reaching this place can be very difcult for some
people, while others can come across to be born with
all of these things. Most people have the ability to
reach their potential, but it takes a strict regimen or
daily practice.
This piece is an attempt to help the individual, whether
he or she is a student, graduate student, professional,
or even as a retiree move from a place of freely
facing life and what it brings, or a tenuous program of
setting objectives or plans, and leaving the outcomes
to God. What follows is a plan, or call it a program
that has worked for quite a few successful men and
women all over the world. It is a deliberate attempt
at discipline through diligence to execute a program
of activities that are specic and purposeful.
Altucher talks about having four legs to his practice:
Spiritual, Physical, Emotional, and Mental.
It's really all about not over exerting yourself in one area,
but staying balanced within all the four [4].
His theory, based on his life experience, is that if you are
weak on one or more of these legs, you will have difculty
mastering the remaining ones. This imbalance leads to chaos
and you will likely minimize your power to achieve the
success you desire.
Come with me to review the program developed by James
Altucher – a very interesting character who has had it all
before [millions of $], and lost it all, and regained it again,
through a daily practice he does every day in order to stay
on top of his game. He's gone through many struggling
phases in his life where he has lost everything: millions of
dollars, his family, his friends but later bounced back
stronger, in part due to this daily practice.
He came up with this program to help those willing to allow
a specic plan to restrain them from allowing life to throw
missiles at them instead of pushing their( God ordained)
plan and agenda to a successful end.
We nd his particular daily practice to be the most
interesting over other knowledge-centric practices because
he incorporates other activities that are often neglected by
entrepreneurs and people involved in early stage startups!
For example, it's very easy to skip workouts [or exercises] due
to sitting at a desk writing or coding all day, or avoiding
spirituality because you're stressed out.
It is vital to make your life balanced if you actually want to
expand your network, attract some viable opportunities for
success, and go on to be successful. Otherwise, you're just be
playing the lottery for success, which most of us regrettably
seem to be doing!
The program is based on the following the structures;
A. Spiritual
B. Physical
C. Emotional &
D. Mental
EDUCATIONAL
A productive routine can lead to good habits.
Reaching this place can be very difcult for some
people, while others gure it out with ease. Most
people have the ability to reach their potential,
but it takes a strict program to nag you to do
them, but it will keep you on track as it serves as
a visual reminder or a “cheat sheet.
SPIRITUAL
a. Pray to a Power beyond yourself -
[We recommend the God of the Bible] -
It is a good thing to have a strong faith
in God.
b. Meditate –
Meditate for 15 minutes, visualizing
ideas in meditation for 60 minutes. Sit in
a chair with your back straight. Watch
your breathing
c. Be grateful & Forgiving –
Visualize everything and Person you are
grateful for, as well as every person
who has done you wrong and forgive
them.
d. Study & read –
Read the Bible, focusing on the Books
Proverbs, the Gospels [Matthew, Mark
Luke & John], Daniel, Deuteronomy, etc.
Think positive thoughts, and appreciate
your existence. Read recommended
autobiographies and self-help books.
Just because everyone seems dishonest is no
reason you should be. You should be proud that
you can be honest.
MENTAL
a. Write down a list of names, of lists of ideas –
10 businesses you can start from home. 30 ways
you can help others without spending any money.
b. Write down a list of ideas–
Then, write down even more later. Revisit it later in
the day, and even the following day.
c. List every productive thing you did yesterday –
If you did nothing, list what you should have done.
d. Complete a crossword or Sudoku puzzle –
Puzzles, books and other mind-expanding
activities.
Whatever you, do not pooh pooh this plan or program.
Discipline is essential for success. Ask anyone who had
a lot of success and then lost it. They will tell you that
at the core of it all, they lost themselves in indiscipline.
All the Best to you in your endeavors!
PHYSICAL
a. WAKE UP BY 5AM -
The early bird catches the worm. Besides it is
the most peaceful time of the day
b. Exercise or at least 20 minutes –
No excuses here. It is too easy to sit in a
chair all day. So go out and shoot some
basketball outside, run a couple of laps
around the neighborhood [a mile or 2] – or
skipping.
c. Do not eat after 6 pm –
This is very hard, but you will sleep better,
and naturally lose weight.
d. Go to Sleep by 9 pm–
8 Hours of sleep a night keeps you
refreshed and your faculties at their highest.
EMOTIONAL
a. Cut out the people that are a drag on you –
The world is full of negative and misdirected
acquaintances. Disengage from them and
ignore them.
b. Help friends, family & people you love –
Except when they bring you down, no
exceptions.
c. You do not owe any explanations –
Explaining is draining.
d. Always be honest –
“RED HOT”
Welcome to the
YOUTH & SPORTS MINISTRY, DR. MUSTAPHA AHMED.
Five Commandments To Make You Succeed.
hen President John Agyekum Kuffour appointed Hon. Ali Yusif Issah as the Sports Minister, many were those who
Wthought he was going to continue in the stead of Hon. E.T Mensah but it was to be. It wasn't long before he was
rocked with a $46,000 scandal which subsequently led to his incarceration. After him came a host of other -
Yaw Osafo Marfo, Dominic Fobih, Rashid Bawa, Paapa Owusu Ankomah, Kwadwo Baah Wiredu and Edward Osei Kweku. It
was a clear indication that all was not well at the Ministry of Youth and Sports because the turn-over of ministers was
alarming compared to the other ministries.
When The NPP regime ended in 2008 and the NDC took over in 2009, many, thought it was going to be the end of the
'musical chairs' at the ministry but that was not to be. The Status quo continued unabated with the latest casualty being Hon.
Mahama Ayariga who has been replaced with Hon. Mustapha Ahmed.
The following ministers preceded Hon. Mustapha Ahmed since the NDC took over in 2009- Mubarak Muntaka, Rashid
Pelpuo, Ekua Sena Dansua, Clement Ko Humado, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah and lately, Mahama Ayariga.
Put all together and you'll have 14 ministers in 14 years - an average of one minister per year. A lot of people are at a loss
as to why ministers at our beloved Sports Ministry are unable to survive where their colleagues in the other ministries are not
reshufed as often. There are ve commandments for every minister who is keen on succeeding at this ministry:
1st Commandment: Do not make the Ministry a
'Black Stars' Ministry.
Most minister had their reigns truncated because
of their extreme involvement with the Black Stars -
Ali Yusif Issah, Muntaka Mubarak, Ekua Sena
Dansua, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah and Mahama
Ayariga, just to mention a few. Give what is due
the Black Stars to them but don't be following them
around. It could be your banana peel.
2nd Commandment: Do not relent on giving the
less nanced sports their due. It's theirs so give it to
them.
Virtually all the ministers who have passed through
this ministry have paid little attention to the other
sporting disciplines aside football. There are
about 37 sports associations and the ministry's
budget must be shared in a way that they all get
their widow's mite. For more than two years, none
of the associations, apart from football, has
received any budgetary support from the ministry
which made the ministers in charge, unpopular
among these associations. Help to expose them to
sub-regional and international tournaments.
Obviously we could have talents in others
discipline too. It shouldn't always be football. Their
success is tied to yours.
3rd Commandment: Do not underrate and
disrespect sports journalist: You can't win that battle.
Sports journalists are undoubtedly the most
powerful in this country. There are over 300 radio
stations across the country and almost every one of
them has a sport program every day. This means
that issues pertaining to the ministry, and the
minister, will always be discussed therefore you
need to have a cordial relationship with the sports
journalists. The media, being the fourth estate of
the country, will keep close tabs on you. Your
actions and inactions will be scrutinized and
interrogated thoroughly. Never disrespect them or
underrate them in the least. You could ask your
predecessors.
4th Commandment: Do not relegate the National
Sports Authority (NSA) to the
background. It would be costly.
Apart from the Football Association
whic h has become a semiautonomous
body, all the other
sports disciplines fall under the
jurisdiction of the NSA therefore, it will
be suicidal for you to ignore them
altogether or pay lip-service to
them…I bet you, all the associations
demand their pound of esh from you.
Liaise with them and get their activities
calendar for the year.
5th Commandment: Do not forget to
build the capacity of your staff. They
need it.
All the ministers who have passed
through the ministry of Sports are
noble. They are astute in their
respective elds but they leave the
ministry, mostly head bowed down.
The little mistakes those around you
make will ultimately be tabled at
your door step. You will surely bear
the br unt for any seeming
incompetence they may exhibit. If you
watched the Justice Dzamefe led Presidential
Commission of Inquiry, then you are well
aware of what I'm insinuation
I am sure you have been wondering
why the turn-over at your new
ministry is so high but with these, I
reckon that you now have some vivid
view of what to expect when you get to
the 'Red Hot Ministry'.
