Yachts have never been bigger. Shipyard order books have never been 

fuller. The yachting industry has come of age and companies in all sectors 

– whether shipyards, designers, brokers or suppliers – have created stable 

and established businesses for the future. 

The current instability in the world financial markets is 

creating uncertainty in the lower and middle brokerage 

markets (€1,000,000 to €10,000,000), especially in the 

United States where many yachts of this value are quite 

heavily financed. Conversely, the same economic climate is 

already demonstrating a positive knock-on effect in the over 

40 metre category, which has been starved of good quality 

inventory for a number of years. Sellers have been asking 

premium prices and have actually been achieving these 

prices. Less impatient buyers who have held off making an 

acquisition could now be rewarded with a greater choice of 

inventory at more realistic price levels. 

The tough area of the brokerage market is the 70 to 90 

metre bracket. Between 10 and 20 buyers exist in this 

category at the moment and there are virtually no vessels 

of this size available for sale. In today's market it is easier 

to sell an 80 metre yacht than a 50 metre yacht. Crazy 

but true! 

The last few years have been especially exciting for large 

custom new builds. Should we expect a downturn in new 

construction? There’s certainly no sign of it as yet. Burgess

have signed 3 new construction contracts and have 4 letters 

of intent for some amazing megayacht new build projects - all 

in the first few months of 2008. The value of these 7 projects 

is more than an astonishing one billion euros! 

As one would expect in this landscape, superyacht 

charters go from strength, but with the enduring problem 

of not enough yachts to meet the concentrated demand in 

high season periods and not enough charterers during the 

balance of the year. The charter market will be difficult to 

grow further unless the volume of off peak season charters 

increases. 

However the large yacht market behaves, Burgess leads 

from the front and is fortunate to have built a business on 

the very strongest foundations. The company is privately 

owned, most of our staff have been with us for years and our 

dedication to offering a first-class service never falters.

The First Export Association of Dutch Shipbuilders is not the most imaginative of titles. Yet today, the Feadship 

name catches the imagination and evokes the magic of yachting like few others. In this, the first in our series of

Feadship rose like a phoenix from the ashes of 

post-war Europe in 1949, when the principal 

players in the Dutch shipbuilding industry formed

the CMN Shipyard in Cherbourg, France, the Burgess central

the recruitment and placement of professionally 

trained, qualified and experienced crew on board our 

managed yachts. Crew who can deliver the very highest 

of standards and exceed both the guest and Owner’s 

expectations are a priority and in order to seek out 

these crew members we are using a number of 

different methods, from within Burgess as well as 

external organisations.

designated page to advertise all vacancies on board our managed 

yachts as well as a feature enabling crew to submit their CV’s and 

enable us to develop our in-house database to target people for 

specific positions. 

The Superyachts Skills 

Foundation 

Due for launch in Summer 2008 this new initiative is designed to 

nurture the next generation of senior superyacht crew and 

Burgess are whole-heartedly lending support to the programme. 

The Superyachts Skills Foundation will take the form of an 

internship, targeting recent graduates from management, 

engineering, hospitality and catering colleges and introducing 

them to an industry they may not have previously thought about 

for a long term career. 

In-house cadetships 

In line with the Superyacht Skills Foundation we are also 

reviewing the possibility of creating in-house cadetships on 

board Burgess managed yachts. We will be working with the 

MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) to design a suitable 

cadetship opportunity in order to train certificated officers who 

are in ever-increasing demand in the superyacht industry. The 

demand for such a scheme is following the growing 

sophistication, size, power and tonnage of these vessels, coupled 

with the developing safety regulations. Burgess have developed 

strong relationships with selected training providers in the UK 

and overseas, in order to ensure that our crew and cadets are 

receiving the best training and development available.

Pendennis Cup 

11 – 17 August, Falmouth, England 

The British shipyard Pendennis and the Port of 

Falmouth Sailing Association have combined forces to 

organise a new regatta for classic superyachts: the 

Pendennis Cup, which will be sponsored by Burgess. 

This event looks set to put Falmouth back on the 

superyacht map by reviving a long tradition of racing in 

the town’s deep water bay. 

This will be a rare chance to see some legendary classic 

sailing yachts in action. Those already planning to attend 

this summer include Lulworth, the largest gaff cutter in the 

world, the Fife Bermudan cutter Cambria, the 19m gaff 

cutter Mariquita and the schooner Mariette, built in 1915.

23m converge on Gustavia Harbour for four days of racing and

spirit of the original 1986 Nantucket Bucket. 

Burgess was at the 2008 St Barth’s Bucket, both as a sponsor 

of the regatta and Paraiso from the Burgess central agency 

fleet was taking part. She scooped fourth place in the overall 

racing results and carried off the Alloy Cup as well as second 

prize in the Grand Dames category. The pictures say it all:

The World Superyacht Awards 2008 

Burgess yachts receive top accolades in Venice 

Boat International’s World Superyacht Awards were 

announced at a gala evening in Venice on 18 April 2008. 

This glittering event took place in the former 

Benedictine Monastery buildings of the Fondazione 

Giorgio Cini on San Giorgio Island (right opposite St 

Mark’s Square and the Doge’s Palace) and was attended 

by the world’s premier yacht owners, designers, naval 

architects, shipbuilders and commentators. 

Burgess CEO Jonathan Beckett hosted a table that 

was in celebratory mood by the end of the night, 

with a spectacular haul of awards and 

commendations for yachts across our brokerage, 

charter and operational management portfolio. In 

particular, T6 swept the board, winning Best 

Displacement Motor Yacht in her class and going 

on to win Best Motor Yacht overall. Lady 

Sheridan, Secret, Annaeva, Saint Nicolas, 

O’Khalilia, Silver and Kadimo’s were all 

shortlisted finalists.
