Message from
the MCA President
Welcome to the 2005 – 2006 curling season in Manitoba. I
am honoured to be President of the MCA in its 118 th year and
look forward to serving our members and member facilities this
season.
The Manitoba Curling Association is considered to be one
of the best run sports organizations in the world. This did not
happen by accident, but with the efforts of our member facilities
and their many dedicated volunteers, we are recognized
around the world as being leaders in our great sport of curling.
I would like to thank all our great volunteers for the many hours
they have put into the sport.
Curling is played by people of all ages, young and old alike.
It is enjoyed by thousands of people in Manitoba as a social
pastime when our harsh winters take hold. Curlers can all
relate that winters seem to pass very quickly.
Curling is a sport that has something to offer to everyone,
Bob MacCallum be it social or competitive. Watching the juniors play and compete
is most enjoyable to everyone. The Manitoba Curling Tour
has flourished in recent years and continues to give our players a chance to compete locally. The
senior/master curlers in the province continue to shine and prove the adage “you are not getting
older, just better.”
How exciting that curling is an Olympic sport. The best curlers in the world are now on the
Olympic stage vying for that elusive medal around their necks. I am sure a Manitoba team will be
on this stage very shortly.
The Manitoba Curling Association would like to thank our many partners who support our great
sport. Special thanks to Canada Safeway, Scott Paper Ltd., Strathcona Trust, Pace Setter Sportswear,
Syngenta Crop Protection Canada Inc., Meyers Norris Penny, and Manitoba’s Credit Unions.
My devotion to curling has always been strong, but it grew even stronger when I joined the
Elmwood Curling Club. Elmwood has been my home for 25 years and I cannot thank the club
enough for their support while I have been on the Board of Directors. I wish them success this
year and into the future.
I wish you all an enjoyable curling season ahead. Please take the time to introduce a new
curler to this great game.
Message from
the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba
John Harvard, P.C., O.M.
As the Queen’s representative in Manitoba, it is my pleasure
to extend vice-regal greetings to members of the Manitoba Curling
Association as you take to the ice for the 2005-2006 season.
It wouldn’t be winter in Canada without curling taking centre
stage in communities large and small. It is one of those unique
sports that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels.
Leagues and bonspiels flourish around our province, adding
special warmth to our famous Manitoba winters by bringing
people together in the spirit of fun and competition.
Our province has a proud and accomplished curling
heritage, producing some of the world’s finest curlers over the
years. That great tradition continues to inspire Manitobans of
all ages to participate in the roaring game, whether their goal is
competition or just camaraderie.
Best wishes to the Manitoba Curling Association for your
leading role in encouraging this great sporting tradition this
– and every – season.
The Honorable John Harvard, P.C., O.M.
Message from
the Premier of Manitoba
Gary Doer
On behalf of the citizens and Government of Manitoba, I am
pleased to welcome all Manitoba participants to the 2005-2006
curling season.
Manitoba and curling go hand in hand; we like to think of
our province as the curling centre of Canada. Indeed, it is
difficult to pass through a Manitoba community without finding
a curling rink. These centres serve not only as opportunities to
engage in competitive sports but also as an important community
places where people meet and have fun, both playing
and observing.
Our long curling tradition has shown tremendous results
with many prominent curlers representing our province as
world champions. I would like to commend the Manitoba Curling
Association for its dedication to promoting the sport in our
province. It is through initiatives such as theirs that curling will
continue to be a prominent Manitoban activity.
Please accept my best wishes for a successful 2005-2006
curling season.
Gary Doer
Message from
the President of Sport Manitoba
Jeff Hnatiuk
Sport Manitoba is pleased to join the Manitoba Curling
Association and member clubs in welcoming the many
thousands of curlers across our province to another season of
curling.
The significance of curling in Manitoba and its contribution
to the social fabric of our sport community can be measured
in several ways. As one of our province’s largest participation
sports, enthusiasts at both the recreational and competitive
level enjoy curling. As a lifelong sport, curling contributes to the
physical and social well-being of the participant while fostering
sport and volunteer development and providing economic
benefits that are derived from hosting major events.
Manitoba’s curling programs have enabled us to become
a leader in Canada. Developmental programs exist for curlers
of all abilities fostering growth and development and allow our
best curlers to achieve at the highest levels of competition.
The success of these programs is a result of the leadership
and support provided by the Manitoba Curling Association and
experienced and dedicated volunteers.
On behalf of Sport Manitoba, I extend best wishes to all
curlers and the Manitoba Curling Association for another
successful season.
The membership and executive of the Elmwood Curling
all its efforts and successes of promoting the game of curling
over the years. We congratulate Bob MacCallum, the 2005-
2006 President of the MCA.
Bob has been a member of the Elmwood Curling Club
this position because of his past experience at Elmwood.
Good luck and best wishes to you Bob and the rest of the
Message from
the Canadian Curling Association
Barry Greenberg
It is my pleasure to bring greetings on behalf of President
Jerry Shoemaker and the Board of Directors of the Canadian
Curling Association to the Manitoba Curling Association.
I would personally like to acknowledge the excellent
“working relationship” that exists between Manitoba and the
national body as we all continue to work for the betterment
of the game.
This year will see Canada once again declaring curling
representatives to the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. Halifax
will be hosting the Canadian Curling Trials December 3-11,
where 10 top Women’s and Men’s teams from across the
country will vie for the right to carry the Canadian colours
on to the world’s greatest athletic stage. We wish all the
competitors well as they strive for excellence.
To President Bob MacCallum, I would like to wish success
in your Presidential year. I know that Manitoba curling
will be in good hands under your stewardship.
To the curlers of Manitoba I wish you good curling, and
more importantly good fellowship, at whatever level you
choose to compete. Manitoba curlers have always embodied
the best of what the game has to offer both on and off
the ice. I congratulate you and wish you well for the upcoming
season.
Regards,
Message from the
Manitoba Curling Hall-Of-Fame
Bill Burns
For eighteen years the Manitoba Curling Hall-of-Fame
and Museum has been collecting and cataloguing artifacts,
and recognizing those who have displayed exceptional skill
and administrative abilities in our sport.
The efforts of the small core of volunteers, that have spent
many hours creating an outstanding display, may be seen
on the fifth floor of the Bay Downtown store, where we share
space with the Manitoba Sports Hall-of-Fame. I urge you
to make the effort and pay a visit. Spend a few minutes immersed
in the history of our game.
We are indebted to our founding members, to all volunteers,
and our owners, the MCA for their support. Without it
our Hall-of-Fame and Museum would not be a reality.
Curlers from all parts of our province are invited to suggest
persons who should be nominated, and contribute any
artifacts they may have.
Plan to attend the 19 th Annual Manitoba Curling Hall-of-
Fame Induction Dinner to be held at the Canad Inn Polo
Park, Sunday, May 7, 2006. On behalf of our Board of Directors,
I wish all curlers much success and enjoyment in the
2005-2006 season.
Introducing the Manitoba
Curling Academy
Students in three Manitoba schools have an opportunity
this year that has never existed before in the Manitoba
school system. For the first time, High Schools in Souris
and Morris will award grades in a school recognized curling
class. Beausejour will also offer a non-credit curling Middle
School program.
The classes, part of a Manitoba Curling Association pilot
project called Manitoba Curling Academy, are an optional
course for students in the two High Schools. Curling 11G is
an approved course in 2005-2006 and is one of the many
optional credit courses that students may elect to take
during the school year. (Others include such diverse topics as band, business, industrial arts and
leadership) In Beausejour, curling is a 40 hour package Phys Ed option at the Middle School level.
Brian Kaleta, a competitive curler and retired High School teacher, is the MCA Director/Volunteer
who is leading the development of the Manitoba Curling Academy program. Kaleta’s committee
included MCA Technical Director Bill Biehl, High Performance Director Connie Laliberte and CCA
National Coach Paul Webster. Webster took on the challenge of assembling existing and original
materials into the nearly 600 page Resource Manual provided to the teachers in the three schools.
Funding for development of the Manual was provided through the CCA’s Development Grants
program.
Looking to the future, the experiences of the teachers will be used to create a more formal curling
curriculum, identifying strengths and weaknesses in the Resource Manual. Kaleta says the program
could become a multi-year program with 3 or 4 different course packages at the Senior School level.
At the Middle School Level, students involved in curling will be eager to enroll in Curling Academy
when they get to High School.
The curling course is offered during regular school hours, making it attractive to bus students or
students with busy after-school or weekend schedules. This year, curling is a School Initiated Course.
Kaleta is hopeful it will become a regular curriculum program as the course focuses on more than
just technical skills. It also deals with such areas as fitness, nutrition, injury prevention, ice and rocks
and the history of Manitoba curling.
As a former teacher, Kaleta sees potential for a complete curling program in the future. He suggests
that, in time, completion of a three or four year Curling Academy Program could carry with it
Level 1 Ice Tech and/or Level 1 Coaching certification. This meshes well with Leadership programs,
another optional program in which students are expected to develop, supervise and coach programs
in the community.
“We’re getting curlers and non-curlers in the programs,” Kaleta says. “The schools and school
divisions are interested because curling represents a lifelong activity for their students and a program
that helps meet provincial priorities on healthy lifestyles as well as on variety of programming.
The big challenges for schools are obviously staffing and funding. However, Kaleta says that schools
also recognize a need to strike a balance between sport-activity programs and arts programs.
With the support of the local curling clubs and with some corporate support, the MCA Curling
Academy program is expected to expand from the 3 school pilot project stage this year to half a
dozen or more schools in the 2006 school year. Interest being expressed by schools and curling
clubs across the province suggests that, over the next few years, there is good future for the MCA’s
Curling Academy initiative.
Internet,
Websites and the
New Media
Nation-wide, and around the world, curling
fans and curling organizations are amazed by the
attention to curling given by both print and broadcast
media in Manitoba. In peak championship
season, Manitoba media invariably provide full
pages of newspaper coverage and many minutes of
radio and television coverage. Even during the rest of
the season, bonspiel coverage and day-to-day coverage
of the sport of curling is the envy of most other jurisdictions.
While the amount and quality of curling coverage has continued at
a high level, the job of the mainstream media has changed in recent years. According
to Winnipeg Free Press curling journalist Paul Wiecek, the access to information
provided by the internet and individual event and association websites has changed the job of the
curling reporter as compared with those who preceded him. “Night and day, you have access to all
of these events around the province and beyond,” Wiecek says. “You don’t have to spend all of your
time hunting for results. You can concentrate on the curlers – not just on the curling.”
Along with most other curling associations, the Manitoba Curling Association has put an emphasis
on development of its website (www.curlmanitoba.org). The MCA has used the technical services
and innovative leadership of thewebshop.ca by ClearOption Technologies Inc. in the development of
the website.
Jason Kabel, General Manager of ClearOption, says that in-season the MCA website is one of
the most visited Manitoba websites. “I’m not surprised. I know how big curling is in this province
and I am pleased that we can be a part of satisfying that demand for information for curling fans.”
However, he is careful to define the difference between the role of the media and his company as
an internet-based software firm. “We’re in the background. We create the system that an organization
like the Manitoba Curling Association can use for mass distribution of information and results. I
understand how that service can be a big help to the reporters in the mainstream media, but we’re
not in the media business.” “Since we are not the source of the information, we don’t have responsibility
for website content or the accuracy of the information posted on the website,” Kabel says.
“However, we hold ourselves to very high standards technologically and artistically. Our job is to
create the best possible vehicle for our client.”
Working with MTS Media, Manitoba Hydro and McNally Robinson among many other corporate
clients including the MCA, Kabel says each provides challenges for his developers. Head Developer
Justin Nedecky says the requests of the MCA have created some interesting programming opportunities
and challenges. “The MCA website includes a lot of customized software compared with other
websites,” Nedecky says.
In particular the results system is one that has been an interesting challenge. Nedecky explains
that content on most websites is managed by people with a fair amount of computer expertise. The
MCA challenged him to create a results system that could be managed by many different people
with little expertise and operating from distances where no real training was possible. “Last year
there were results of 2,814 games posted on the MCA website from locations in every region of the
province,” Nedecky says. “The volunteers did a terrific job using the software. Most MCA events
were documented on the website as they progressed, providing a level of on-demand scoring that
we’re sure the fans appreciated.”
“There is a lot of data involved with many of the MCA’s software packages,” Nedecky says. “The
challenge for me is to find the best way to get that data into the system and laid out on the screen so
that it will be very easy to use for both the volunteers managing it and the curling fans viewing it.”
Competitions/Entry System – improved in 2005 to provide an even more secure flow of
personal information and a simplified entry process, including a drop-down box listing all events
and entry fees. This process has been used by about 75% of teams entering MCA events this
season and has significantly reduced the office workload required to process entries. Software is
currently being developed to allow a team to make multiple entries at one time.
Courses, Clinics & Coaching – a new software module has been developed to allow for
daily (or more often) updating of the courses offered in the coach/instructor, ice tech, high performance
and other areas.
Links – look for links to major events, MCA sponsors and other curling organizations worldwide.
History – currently includes Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame Members and Honourary Life
Members. Software is currently being developed that will identify the competitive records of past
Manitoba champions as well as Provincial competitors.
News – the link at the bottom of the index takes you to an archive of all past news items. A search
mechanism will allow you to search for past news stories by keyword or by month.
Wells, Johnson
into CCA Hall of Fame
Manitoba curling media pioneer
‘Cactus’ Jack Wells and the
Strathcona Curling Club’s legendary
Leo Johnson were among the
2005 inductees into the Canadian
Curling Hall of Fame.
‘Cactus’ Jack’s wife Flicka
and son Richard (r) (pictured with
CCA Director Barry Greenberg) accepted
the honour on behalf of the
late Mr. Wells at the mid-summer
Sandra Schmirler Golf Tournament
in Winnipeg.
Richard Wells said the family
was honoured, and his father
would be honoured, by the recognition.
“Curling was a big part of
his life,” Wells said. Recognizing
that ‘Cactus’ Jack Wells was instrumental in creating the media side of today’s curling
world, his son says “He didn’t see sports as the industry it has become. His approach
was to enjoy it because it was entertainment.”
Jack Wells was inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame in recognition of his contributions
to curling as a media person and for his long-time role as a promoter of the Macdonald
Brier, which helped make championships into major Canadian sporting events.
Earlier this year, Leo Johnson of the fabled Winnipeg Strathcona Curling Club was
inducted into the CCA Hall of Fame as a Curler-Builder. Johnson won the Brier for Manitoba
in 1934. Ten years later, he won the Manitoba championship but there was no Brier
that year because of World War II. Johnson returned to the Brier in 1946 and lost in a
three-way playoff for the title, won by Billy Rose of Alberta. In 1965, he won the inaugural
Canadian Senior Men’s Championship and remains one of only two men (Jim Ursel is the
other) to have won both the Brier and Seniors. He also served 10 years on the Manitoba
Curling Association’s Executive Council and was President of the MCA in 1963-64.
New Honourary Life Members
After serving on the Executive of the Assiniboine
Memorial Curling Club in various capacities,
including President, Bob Gould began his
Bob Gould
MCA volunteer career in the mid-1980’s as the
Assiniboine Memorial Club Representative. Over the years, he chaired many committees
of the former men’s association including Entertainment, Rules and Ice Allocation
Committees.
Prior to the amalgamation of the two associations, he served as Junior Men’s Provincial
Chairman for two terms. He continued as an elected member of the Board of Directors after
amalgamation and served as the first MCA Junior Chairman for a
joint Junior Men-Junior Women championship, hosted by Assiniboine
Memorial and Deer Lodge. He was influential in establishing the
current junior championship round-robin format and in establishing
parallel boundaries for Junior Men and Junior Women Zones. This
latter change was later adopted across all of the MCA’s 16-team
championships.
Since leaving the MCA Board of Directors, Bob Gould has continued
his service to the MCA, acting as chairman of the annual MCA
Golf Tournament every year up to the present.
Bob is honoured to have been awarded this Life Membership by
the Manitoba Curling Association.
Dan started curling on natural ice at Belmont in
a high school bonspiel where he won his first
Dan Hyrich
prize. Two years later, in 1952, he represented
Manitoba in Moncton, NB where they came in
second place in the High School Nationals. In 1974, Dan again represented Manitoba at
the Brier in London, ON where they came in third.
Dan has been a Senior Zone Chairman for eight years and was
also a President of the Belmont Curling Club. He has been member
of the Glenboro Curling Club since 1972 where he is also an Honourary
Life Member. Brandon has hosted many successful major curling
events and Dan has volunteered at most of them. The greatest thing
that Dan has achieved from curling is the many friends that he has
made over the years.
Dan now enjoys a healthy lifestyle and plays senior slo-pitch in
Arizona in winter and summers here in Manitoba.
Dan is very honoured and pleased to have his name added to the
list of Honourary Life Members of the MCA.
Message from the
Manitoba Curling Foundation
Edie Caron
It is a pleasure for me as President of the Manitoba Curling
Foundation to bring greetings from our Board to all our
member clubs across the province.
Over the last few years, the MCF and the MCA have
worked together for the betterment of the sport throughout
Manitoba, in particular, the support of junior curlers. The
Junior Development Program is designed to assist Manitoba
curling clubs and Manitoba schools in hosting curling clinics
for juniors up to the age of 19. The Foundation assists in this
regard by subsidizing a portion of the cost. The Foundation
also awards up to four $1,000 post-secondary education
scholarships to any junior curler actively involved in community/school
involvement. The 2002-2003 season introduced
the Manitoba Curling Foundation Sport Award to two junior
curlers from each Provincial Sport Region, with an annual
award of $250.
In recent years, substantial funds have also been directed
from the Foundation towards assisting the Manitoba Curling
Association in the funding of competition, technical and
administrative programs.
The Foundation is eager to assist anyone in Manitoba,
who has identified a suitable need. If you think that you have
a project that will qualify for support, please contact us.
of a number of awards designed to recognize the dedication and excellence
of Manitoba curlers and volunteers.
Honourary Life memberships recognize service to the Association and the
Bill Lumsden Memorial Award recognizes volunteer dedication to a particular
member-curling club. Youth curlers are also recognized through the Susan
Galbraith Sportsmanship Award at the Provincials, the Lorraine Toth Scholarships
at Summer Camp and through the Edna Moffat Scholarship. The MCA is also
proud to pay tribute to the contributions of Manitobans who have received the
Canadian Curling Association’s volunteer award.
CCA - Award of Achievement
significantly to curling in one of four areas – builder, technical development (instructor, coach,
with no minimum or maximum number awarded. Contributing to curling is the main criterion.
2003 Hans Wuthrich Gimli
The W.E. (Bill) Lumsden Memorial Award
W.E (Bill) Lumsden passed away in April of 1982. To members of the Elmwood
Curling Club as well as friends wherever curling is played, Bill exemplified a spirit and
devotion to the game that we as a Club feel should be remembered. Accordingly, this
Award has been established. The idea of the Award, which we hope will be presented
annually, is to recognize someone in Manitoba, male or female, to the game of
curling.
Too often, a person in a club or league contributes to the growth of his or her club
and receives little or no recognition. Some are elected to the Provincial or National
organizations and receive accolades from that source, while others, who give freely of
their time and themselves, are never so honoured. Hopefully, this Award will in some
way help correct that situation.
SELECTION CRITERIA
1. The Award recognizes a person who gives freely of their time on a voluntary basis.
2. The Award recognizes a person whose efforts in their curling club also reflect a community involvement
such as organizing a league for young curlers, disabled persons and senior citizens.
3. No Award will be presented posthumously.
4. Nominations are held over one year subject only to the permission of the nominators.
5. The Award recognizes in particular a person who has contributed in a general way to the growth of
their Club but perhaps has not received recognition for their efforts.
