Collaborative Degree Award
The Global Education Office is pleased to announce the next cycle of the Quest Global Impact
Awards. This program will fund proposals from academic units to develop new and innovative
programming in support of internationalization goals at Virginia Commonwealth University as
expressed in Quest for Distinction:

Recruit and retain highly qualified students from other countries

Provide high impact learning experiences for students in a global environment
^^
Contribute to research, scholarship, creative expression and clinical practice in a global context
The GEO/QGI Collaborative Degree Award is intended to support a department or school that
wishes to develop a collaborative graduate or undergraduate degree program with a university
in another country that will provide a gateway to VCU for international students and/or for VCU
students to pursue part of their education overseas. While no fixed number of the awards has
been set, we anticipate awarding four grants of approximately $20,000 each. The final number and
amount of awards will depend on the merits of each proposal as determined by reviewers.
These awards are not intended to fund one-time events, attendance at professional meetings,
equipment purchases or other expenses typically covered by existing budgets.
The completed proposal should be received by the Global Education Office by
Monday, January 13, 2014 at 4:30 p.m. Completed proposals can be submitted electronically to
geo@vcu.edu and/or in hard copy to 817 W. Franklin Street, Room 124. Awards will be announced
by February 3, 2014. Award recipients agree to provide a final report at end of award period and to
provide promotional credit to the Global Education Office. Questions should be addressed to

The criteria for evaluating proposals include:

Alignment with unit’s strategic goals and metrics of Quest for Distinction
^^
Evidence that an award will result in a sustained, significant impact towards internationalizing
VCU (such as number of students likely involved), including market research when appropriate
^^
Long term financial impact on the University
^^
Degree of commitment and cost-share from units and partner universities
^^
Creativity and innovation of proposed work
^^
Awareness of VCU collaborative degree program development and approval process
^^
Track record in successful implementation of complex initiatives
^^
Reflection of input from broad range of VCU constituencies, including students and community
members
We encourage proposals from all units, particularly those in early stages of internationalizing their
curricula, research and community outreach.

Proposal Checklist
The GEO/QGI Collaborative Degree Award proposal must include each of the components described
below:
Narrative (prepared with 12 point font, one-inch margins, and no longer than eight double-space
pages) must address the following:
Summary of proposal [½ page limit]
Relation to current programming, initiatives, or priorities in PI’s university unit(s) [½ page limit]
Description of the work to be done [2 page limit]
Anticipated outcomes (address immediate, mid-range and long-term) [1 page limit]
Evaluation plan that addresses immediate, mid-range, and long-term goals [2 page limit]
Significance of the proposed activity to Quest for Distinction [½ page limit]
Detailed time line for work to be done to accomplish immediate, mid-range, and long-term
outcomes, specifying that portion to be concluded by the end of the summer 2014
[½ page limit]
How will the proposal enhance preparation of our students? What specific opportunities will
exist for student participation, especially related to research? [1 page limit]

Current curriculum vita listing the most important and relevant information that supports the
proposal (e.g., education, positions held, honors, publications, grant history, presentations)

A letter from the Dean and Director/Chair of each unit involved addressing the proposal’s fit with
the unit’s strategic goals and metrics of Quest for Distinction.
A letter of support from principal participants’ supervisor(s) if different than above

with strengths and track record of the partner institution(s)
A letter of support from the appropriate authority at the participating institution
