Homes Foundation between July 1, 2008, and June 30, 

2009. Although we have tried to accurately reflect each

Faith in Action 

God’s spirit is in and among us at Phoebe every day. And, by putting Faith in Action, we have 

the ability to transform the lives of those we serve. 

Faith in Action is at work in our relationships with each other, in our compassionate residentfocused 

care, and in the donors and volunteers whose contributions make the difference in 

the lives of the older adults in our communities. This is the heart of the “Phoebe Difference!” 

In this report, we have set out to illustrate for you just a few of the ways that we experience 

Faith in Action here at Phoebe. We give heartfelt thanks for the gifts of time, talent and 

treasure that make this possible! 

Highlights of the Year 

We are happy to report that despite the many challenges that our economy has presented in 

this past year, Phoebe remains on a solid financial footing. We have seen strong operational 

results and continue to reinvest in programs, facilities and people.

What’s driving this positive picture? First and foremost, we have very dedicated and loyal 

employees and a strong corps of committed and hardworking volunteers. We strive to be 

effectively lean in our management and to invest in our people. We understand and know our 

industry and can operate effectively and efficiently because of that knowledge. 

Phoebe’s financial strength allows us to improve the lives 

of the people we serve and extend our ministry to meet 

emerging needs in the community. Our focus on Faith in 

Action calls us to be proper stewards of everything that 

comes to us and to insure that those we serve live the 

fullest life possible. 

Striving to be good stewards of our resources, we have been 

focused on “repositioning” throughout the organization. 

This simply means reevaluating our current services and 

facilities and updating our programs to be more in line 

with current needs of our communities. 

Please read the highlights of the year presented throughout 

this report. We have reinvested in each of our skilled 

nursing facilities to promote quality of care and quality of

life for those in short term rehabilitation and long term care. We are very proud of the four- and five-star 

ratings which were received by our health care communities. We have enhanced the continuum of care 

with the expansion of independent living and the addition of Village Gardens memory support personal 

care and Tranquility Place adult day center at Phoebe Berks. 

Looking ahead 

With expenses steadily increasing and fiscal concerns all around us, we anticipate that it will be 

challenging to meet our break-even budget this year. We are expecting additional costs with the removal 

of caps on energy bills, increased health insurance premiums and inflation in the prices of food and 

supplies. 

We are seeing a dramatic increase in the number of residents seeking subsidies at the same time the 

government and insurers are decreasing reimbursements. We anticipate a 3% reduction in Medicaid 

funding, affecting more than 50% of our residents in long term care, and 1-2% reductions in Medicare 

funding for our short-term rehab residents. Realizing that many of those we serve have experienced 

significant losses in their savings, we have doubled our budget for charitable care for those without 

adequate funds. 

Phoebe’s ability to continue to reinvest in mission and ministry requires your continued investment in 

us. We are grateful for the depth of generosity and commitment shown to our communities this past 

year by our loyal friends and family. We thank you for helping us put Faith in Action!

Phoebe Century Circle 

Throughout Phoebe’s existence, 

charitable giving has played a central 

role in our ability to care for the many 

residents who depend on us. The 

Phoebe Century Circle pays tribute to 

those leadership donors who encourage 

and sustain our daily work. 

Members of the Century Circle 

and the Estates and Trusts list on page 

12 together contributed more than $3.35 

million in support between July 1, 2008, 

and June 30, 2009. A total of $3.57 

million was raised in charitable 

contributions to help Phoebe carry out 

its ministry to older adults. 

The Phoebe Century Circle recognizes 

individuals, businesses, churches 

and foundations giving a total of $1,000 

or more during the previous fund year. 

In addition to giving recognition to those 

who make gifts of cash or securities, 

the Phoebe Century Circle recognizes 

the charitable contributions of those 

individuals who invest in charitable gift

Phoebe Berks Health Care Center 

received a 5-star rating on new Nursing 

Home Compare scales. 

Construction was completed and 

memory support programs were 

launched at Tranquility Place for day 

services and at the Village Gardens. 

Memory support staff and behavioral 

teams received special training to 

respond to cognitive and behavioral 

needs of residents. 

Employees and volunteers received 

special Abiders training in preparation 

for providing end-of-life comfort to 

residents of the health care center. 

Residents participated with family and 

friends in Phoebe Berks’ first 

intergenerational Camp Phoebe. 

Three Berks employees received full 

tuition scholarships to participate in the 

Penn State University Licensed Practical 

Nurse program offered on the Phoebe 

Berks campus.

Toward the end of his life, Phoebe Home resident David Renshaw created the Nancy and David 

Renshaw Memorial Fund to be sure others would be able to experience the creative and 

life-enhancing programs of the Home’s Community Life and Pastoral Care 

departments. With the help of his close friends, Jeff and Judy Scholl, 

Phoebe Home purchased a rolling ice cream cart in David’s memory. 

Adorned with a colorful red and white umbrella and a bell that 

announces its arrival, the cart visits neighborhoods of 

Phoebe Home at least once a week, delivering 

cheer in the form of ice cream sundaes.

new Nursing Home Compare scales. 

The Miller Personal Care Community 

received a deficiency-free survey from 

the DPW. 

The Bridgeways Neighborhood was 

named an “Excellence in Care Program 

of Distinction” by The Alzheimer’s 

Foundation of America. 

Nearly $1 million was reinvested in 

Phoebe Home for capital needs, 

including 20 room renovations, 21 

bathroom updates, therapy gym 

renovations, a new courtyard with 

landscaping, and an educational 

classroom. 

Culture changed as overhead paging 

was eliminated, dining choices were 

altered to reflect residents’ likes and 

dislikes, and pajamas replaced hospital 

gowns. 

Phoebe Terrace opened its Brain Fitness 

Gym, partnering with Penn Treaty 

and utilizing software by Posit Science.

Long-time UCC members Cheryll and Harvey 

Drury remember hearing about Phoebe 

Richland from members of their congregation. 

Six years ago, the couple got to know 

Phoebe Richland better when Harvey was 

admitted there for short-term rehabilitation 

following surgery. Cheryll realized it was the 

perfect time to become a volunteer, so she 

became a lifetime member of the auxiliary. 

“I really enjoyed visiting the residents, 

teaching crafts and playing cards. When we 

retired to New Mexico (pictured at left) it was 

hard to leave Phoebe Richland, but we 

stayed in touch and visit when we are in the 

area. After the move we told our children ‘If 

we ever need more care, we are going back 

east to Phoebe.’”

Daphne Rutty (standing), housekeeper, believes

at Wyncote Church Home. “It takes 

all of us together to make Wyncote 

the place that it is. We try our 

utmost to make all who work and 

live here comfortable.” 

Daphne is pictured here with

decades. Rose remembers 

using an old-fashioned potato 

peeler to prepare more than 

200 potatoes at a time for 

mashing in the Wyncote 

kitchen. Daphne says, “Not 

only are the needs of the body 

met here, so are the needs of 

the soul.”

Wyncote received two excellent state 

surveys and a deficiency-free OSHA 

survey, acknowledging the exceptional 

quality of care offered by the facility. 

Teamwork and anticipation buoyed 

spirits as a $2.4 million renovation 

project got underway, providing 

upgrades to enhance the quality of life 

and care available to Wyncote residents. 

Medicare and Blue Cross certification 

expanded services to include 

rehabilitation for both short-term and 

longer-stay residents. 

New computer software was launched 

to help document and monitor care. 

The Wyncote family hosted members 

of the United Church of Christ for the 

fall meeting of the Philadelphia 

Association. An “Adopt a Resident” 

program was created to involve the 

church community.

take a moment from their busy afternoon to reflect on why they volunteer at Phoebe. “Caring for 

others is just part of our nature and it always blesses us,” they agree. 

It was Jenny’s job that first brought her to Phoebe Home, but it was the residents 

and how Phoebe connected with her faith that kept her coming back. “It’s 

the warm feeling you get here as soon as you 

walk in the front door,” she says. “It’s a 

wonderful feeling, like you are at home.”

auxiliary and has recruited Laura to 

help continue her support. As

“interacting with auxiliary members 

and the joy residents experience

Phoebe Berks Health Care Center Auxiliary 

generously contributed the following clinical and 

rehabilitation equipment this year: wheelchair cushions; 

standard, lower-seat, wide and high-back wheelchairs; 

Skil-Care mattresses; and a Snöezelen unit. It also 

supported Phoebe Berks’ Embracing Life Campaign and 

raised money to help cover the auxiliary’s printing costs. 

By operating and staffing the Village Gift Shoppe 24 

hours a week, holding a Bakeless Cake Sale, conducting 

the 1% Rebate Program offered by ShurFine and Redner’s 

Markets, and hosting its annual tea to recruit and renew 

memberships, the auxiliary also donated funds for: a spalike 

bathing room offering residents a more home-like 

environment; resident activities; artwork for the Center and 

renovations to its Patriot Place lounge; a Wii game system 

and exercise mat; pillows and throws for residents at 

Christmas; portable CD/cassette players; an element cover 

for the Chapel and a raised garden. 

Members of Phoebe Home Auxiliary worked 

together to fund monthly entertainment programs for 

residents and friends. To raise money it held a Lawn Fete 

in August, concluding with an outdoor performance by the 

Great Allentown Band in the band shell. 

This past spring, the auxiliary sponsored a Flea 

Market in Moyer Hall and made a greatly appreciated gift 

to the Nursing department to help buy a Spot Vital-Signs 

device and a six-drawer cabinet with key locks. The 

auxiliary also contributed money to the Community Life 

department to be used for luncheon trips for several 

residents without personal funds.

donated funds to purchase jetted therapy tubs, a hutch 

cabinet for the Heritage Café, a Snöezelen and a gas grill. 

It funded the operation of the gift cart, provided monthly 

resident birthday party carnation boutonnieres as part of 

the Blissful Birthday Program, and covered the cost of 

brochures to publicize the program. 

The auxiliary supported and sponsored a Clam Bake 

and Boardwalk Festival, a Celebration of Life ceremony and 

Operation Santa Claus gifts for residents’ holiday parties. 

To raise funds, the auxiliary hosted a reception at 

DeSales University as part of the theatrical production 

“Sunday in the Park with George;” conducted WaWa hoagie 

coupon sales; its annual membership program; the Center’s 

Blissful Birthday Program; and Phoebe Richland’s Family 

Day/Art Walk. 

At Wyncote Church Home, volunteers created a 

beautiful vegetable garden along the back patio for 

residents’ enjoyment. A team of Drexel student volunteers 

helped decorate trees for the holidays, and a group from 

Drexel’s College of Optometry led an Easter bingo. 

Volunteers from New Goshenhoppen came in 

faithfully to visit residents, have lunch with them and lead 

arts and crafts. Twice a year the group also invited residents 

to join them for lunch at a farm in Barto. 

A group of resident volunteers at Wyncote Church 

Home assisted with clerical work, gift shop operations, 

announcements and prayers before meals, and evening 

bingo. One also conducted a pretzel sale timed to coincide 

with pay day Fridays.

Phoebe identified energy conservation 

opportunities and is developing a longrange 

plan for energy efficiency and 

savings. 

Work is underway on implementing an 

electronic health record and electronic 

medication administration record for 

those served by Phoebe and the Phoebe 

Pharmacy. 

Phoebe invested more than $300,000 in 

consumer and caregiver education 

during the past year, including tuition 

reimbursement, scholarships, 

conferences and workshops for 

employees, and outreach programs such 

as that of the Phoebe Institute on Aging.

describe the broad work of the church and the specific work of 

Phoebe Ministries. That century-long mission to provide for 

the elderly is a shining example of discipleship, one 

our family supports. From childhood, I remember 

Mother and Dad giving to Phoebe through 

special offerings at Salem UCC. As a youth 

group member and a pastor, I’ve spent time 

visiting Phoebe’s residents and playing 

bingo, leading worship, and now serving 

on the Governing Board. 

“When Christopher began searching for a 

job in Information Technology, I urged him 

to apply at Phoebe. And when my parents 

considered moving to a care community, 

Phoebe Terrace was the only choice. St. 

Francis said, ‘Preach the gospel always, 

and if necessary use words.’ Phoebe 

preaches the gospel through its care communities.
