PICKS
JUNE
2011
By Micki Houze
There are two seasons to every year, waiting for
Festival Season and Festival Season. I would like to add
another season, waiting for Charlie to visit and enjoying
Charlie and his visits. June is the best month of the year
because we have both, Charlie and festivals. Speaking
of festivals, many people from the Kansas City Blues
Community are going to Eureka Springs for the Festival
to perform and have fun. I will miss you and hope you
have a terrific trip.
Wednesday June 1st, Samantha Fish is having her CD
release party at Knuckleheads Saloon. As you already
know, she has been touring with the RUF Records Girls
with Guitars Blues Caravan all over Europe. This CD is
Samantha’s own and I have already heard buzz from
unnamed sources (her dad Bill) that it is a great CD.
My favorite CD’s are from Kansas City’s own talented
musicians and this will make a terrific addition to the
collection.
Friday June 3rd, At Coda it is first Friday with Jason
Vivone. This is a comfortable little place with great
food near the Crossroads Art District. Check out Jason’s
website, he does tend to perform at venues that will
embrace you with a hug.
FUNdraiser Alert Saturday June 4th, Talented
musicians don’t just happen: they are mentored and
guided through the music making process. Kansas City
has a musical history that will rival any city in the world.
Thanks to Arthur Seabury and his Urban Community
PKCBs -june 2011
Leadership Academy there will
be musicians from Kansas City
for generations to come. Today
is the 8th annual Blues in
the Schoolyard Festival starting
at noon. Come on out and
support this fine program.
There is a long line of musicians
joining students to perform.
UCLA Student band starts
things off, then Acacia and the
Brothers Kids, Ron Teamer, Rockin’ Rick, double Exposure,
Jah Lion and Linda Shell’s Blues Thang, This is just the
start of a huge day for music in Kansas City.
Saturday June 4th, At the Independence Events Center
we have local international stars, Trampled Under Foot
opening for Pat Travers and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
Pat Travers is more than just the guy with the hit “Boom,
Boom Out Goes The Lights” he has been making great
music for decades and has put out 30 albums in the past
35 years. He has been credited with assisting on albums
with other notables too. Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s first
guitar was purchased for him by his grandmother with
S & H Green Stamps. He grew up in Shreveport
Louisiana and has had four Grammy nominations and
two BMA awards. Kansas City Blues Society will be
there with an information booth so please come out and
say hello. Way up north is one of my favorite Chicago
Bluesmen, Joe Moss. He will be performing outdoors
at Wabash BBQ in Excelsior Springs. Joe’s blend of
blues and R&B has made him one of the most popular
musicians on the windy city circuit at venues like
Buddy Guys Legends and the House of Blues.
Thursday June 9th, Danny’s Big
Easy is hosting the Kansas City
Blues Society’s monthly meeting
and jam. The jam band is the Kansas
City legend Millage Gilbert. This will
be a great night down at historical 18th and Vine.
Friday June 11th, Uncle Bo’s in Topeka has Connie
Hawkins and the Blues Wreckers. Most of us know
Connie and Steve Hawkins from Connie and the
Choirboys. Now with their new band they are showing
Kansas what we have known for years, Connie is a sassy
and brassy vocal powerhouse.
It is FESTIVAL TIME!!! Friday and Saturday June
10th and 11th. I am happier than a hyperactive kitty
with two balls of yarn to tear up. It is time for the
Gladstone Bluesfest. From the start on Friday night to
the closing act on Saturday it is one blues party after
another. Friday night starts with Lionel Young Band.
This music veteran once was born in Rochester NY;
he was a member of the Pittsburg PA symphony and
later settled in Denver Colorado. The Colorado Blues
Society should be button busting proud of Lionel Young
since he is the only double winner in the history of the
International Blues Challenge in Memphis, He won the
Solo/duo competition in 2008 and the Lionel Young
Band won the famed competition in 2011. Next is the high
energy of Stacy Mitchhart. Stacy has been a favorite the
last two years at Merle Jam. Closing out the Friday lineup
is Tab Benoit. It is always a treat to see this Southern
Louisiana Guitar Gentleman who believes in spontaneity
and does what comes natural which makes each show he
does a unique experience. Saturday starts at 1pm, with
our own Solo/duo competitor Jason Vivone. Jason is a
terrific singer/song writer and can make anything with
strings sing. Next is the Mary Bridget Davies Group. Ms
Davies and her band were tight from the first time they
played together. They won the KCBS band challenge
and went to Memphis to represent us in the International
Blues Challenge. Out of over 100 bands from around
the world, they won second place. The charming
Lonesome Hank and the Heartaches brings their classic
blues and rock n roll up next. He is a charming harp
player and singer and I find it difficult to believe that he
is lonesome at all. Marquis Knox is next and although
he is only 20 years old he has lived the true blues life.
Born in St. Louis to a musical family generationally
rooted to the blues, he spent much of his young life in
continued on page 4
KCBs june 2011 P 3
continued from page 2
Granada, Mississippi. He learned to play guitar from his
grandmother. When he was just 16 years old he recorded
his first album in two days, in a church with Michael Burkes
during an ice storm. This album was nominated for a
BMA award for Best New Artist. Now this alone could be
considered one of the best shows of the year but closing
the night out is Kelley Hunt. Kelley was born and raised
in the Kansas City area. It is hard to define her genre
since she is influenced by greats such as Ruth Brown,
Billie Holiday, and piano greats such as Professor Longhair
and Johnnie Johnson. She is passionate with her
music. My favorite Kelley Hunt song is a tribute to her
piano teacher, “Queen of the 88’s.” It was this song
along with Ms Connie Crash and her radio show that
introduced me to the Kansas City Blues Society so many
years ago.
Friday June 17th, Today Charlie arrives from England
for his twice-yearly fix of blues, BBQ and Boulevard
beer and hugs from his adopted community. It is
always good to see him and to remind ourselves of what
a wealth of talent we have here in Kansas City.
Another Festival! Friday June 17th and Saturday
June 18th, Parkville River Jam. This is a free Blues
and Jazz festival. Usually there is parking at Park
University and a shuttle to the festival. Friday starts
off 5:30 pm with Roger “Hurricane” Wilson. Roger was
raised in Atlanta GA, worked as music promoter and
taught guitar for decades. Les Paul once exclaimed that
Roger plays some great blues. Max Groove moves in next
to show the smooth jazz style that has made Kansas City
famous. Rounding out the night is Harper. It will be a
treat to hear Harper’s unique blues harmonica and his
native Australian didgeridoo in this beautiful park on
the banks of the Missouri River. Saturday starts at noon
with the Parkville Symphonic Band. Next up is The Trash
Angels, a favorite of our friend and fellow KCBS board
member, Cynthia Selder. This high octane punkabilly
blues band plays over 200 shows a year coast to coast.
Following this rollicking set is the gritty, soulful sounds
of the Sena Ehrhart Band from Rochester Minnesota.
Then some sweet jazz from Kansas City’s own Angela
Hagenbach and then The Mary Bridget Davies Group will
round off this two day festival and leaving you begging
for more.
Saturday June 18th, Anyone who reads Charlie’s
entries on Facebook knows that he has gone from
being #1 fan to #1 friend of Samantha Fish, Dani Wilde
and Cassie Taylor otherwise known as Girls with
Guitars. They have toured all over Europe and finally
will be here in Samantha’s hometown and her home
venue, Knuckleheads Saloon. Along with the Girls
with Guitars is going to be Blues Cruise reunion with
The Sena Ehrhart Band fresh from their lengthy road
trip from Parkville and the always personable Ronnie
Baker Brooks. Editor’s Note: See Charlie’s article on his
adventures across the pond - following Girls With Guitars
in England –page 12
Sunday June 19th, Happy Father’s Day to all the men
out there who have cleaned a scraped knee, cheered as
loud at a youth football game as he does for the Chiefs
and has wiped tears from a little girl’s face after her
first broken heart. Thank you for being a good man in
a child’s life. To celebrate Father’s day, the Nace Brothers
is having their annual
Roots of Steel show at
Knuckleheads Saloon.
Friday June 24th at
BB’s Lawnside BBQ
is Catfish Keith. He is
a two-time WC Handy
award winner for Best
Acoustic Blues and has
been inducted into the
Blues Hall of Fame.
This fine musician also
shares his knowledge as
an educator doing guitar
workshops and blues in
the school programs all
over the world. Tonight
it will be a trip back in
time.
Well that is all I have for
this month. Remember
there are jams all over
town. Mo Paul is hosting
a new Saturday jam
in the Northland at 2pm
at The Hideout Bar and
Friends, one of the best things about the Kansas
City Blues community, is the fact that it IS a
community. When there is a fundraiser or a benefit
or similar goings-on transpiring, the community
usually comes out in support. I have news of
another very important and worthy cause that
needs such support. On Saturday, June 25, at the
Hideout Bar & Grill in Gladstone MO, the
“Benefit for Charlie Wilks” will be going down that
afternoon. Charlie Wilks is the son of Hardlikker
front man Paul Wilks, and a fine musician in his
own right.
Charlie has been blind since the age
of five when a brain tumor crushed
his optic nerve. He persevered and
at the age of seven he began learning
to play the piano. Over the next
few years he learned to play the
saxophone at age ten and a few
years ago he began learning to
play the guitar. This year he began
playing tuba in his high school
band. He has plans to go to college
and pursue a degree in music by attending
accredited music camps for blind musicians, and
this is where your help is greatly needed.
The National Resource Center for Blind Musicians
is part of the Overbrook School for the Blind.
Charlie will be attending a program at Dodge City
Community College this June and has hopes to
attend another one in Philadelphia later this
summer. The Benefit at the Hideout will be held
to raise funds to get him there, and Paul has put
together an outstanding lineup of musical acts to
perform all afternoon on June 25. Scheduled to
play that afternoon is Hardlikker, Kansas City’s
youth band hopefuls, The Unlimited Blues Band,
some band called the Coyote Bill House Rockin’
Boogie Band, long time KC stalwarts Blue 88 and
more including the young man Charlie Wilks himself.
There will be a jam session at the end and
by Coyote Bill
quite possibly some other fun
stuff too.
If you can’t make the show, and
want to make a donation Paul
informs me that he has started
a fund. Checks can be made to
“The Charlie Wilks Music Fund”
and sent care of Paul Wilks to
4210 Clark #301, Kansas City MO,
64111. Hope to see you there.
IN OTHER NEWS: It’s June and that means
outdoor festival season is underway. This year
promises to be a good one. The end of May saw
the KC Bluesiacs hold their first Blues Fest, Picnic
and Pig Roast in Overland Park. With any kind
of luck the Kansas City, KS Street Blues Fest is
going to be happening this year. Also every year
the good folks at the Coleman Hawkins Society
hold a Jazz festival in the spring and a Blues
festival in the fall. This year’s Jazz fest will be June
17 and 18 in downtown St. Joseph, and the lineup
includes the Mid-American All-Star Jazz Ensemble,
The Bill Crain Group, Diversejazz and others.
Sounds like a good one!
That’s all for now, keep supporting the local scene!
Girls With
Guitars”
Play The Old
Country!
by Charlie Monck, Blues News foreign corespondent
Hello again, all you wonderful blues-loving people of
Kansas City!
Charlie Monck here, writing from Charlbury, in the county
of Oxfordshire, England. I’ve been coming to Kansas City
for several years now. Originally I came for a woman,
but that fell apart, and I started to make friends with
Kansas City blues people, and to hear that wonderful
music … it is the best thing that ever happened, and
my best friends are here, which is why I keep coming
back! In June 2010 the Kansas City Blues Society gave
me a special award for supporting the blues. I look at
that award every day, with love and great pride. One
thing that I’ve not been able to do so far, though, is to
welcome any of my Kansas City music friends to
England.
Until now, that is. Because Girls With Guitars, featuring
Kansas City’s own blues daughter Samantha Fish,
together with Cassie Taylor from Boulder, Colorado, Dani
Wilde from Brighton, England, and Denis Palatin from
France on drums, started their first ever tour of England
on April 26th. Gigs in Neeth, Yorkshire and Kinross in
Scotland led up to April 28th, when I saw them for the
first time in England at the ROBIN 2 in Wolverhampton,
near Birmingham, about 80 miles from where I live. I
was able to attend four gigs, and I hope that this will
give you an idea of Girls With Guitars, as well as an
impression of how they were received in England.
Thursday April 28th dawned! I somehow got through a
day’s work in Reading without boiling over, and left just
after 3pm for the 125-mile drive to Wolverhampton.
The ROBIN 2 is a big barn-like place, and can hold 700
people. I arrived in plenty of time, and I was the first
through the door. One or two others drifted in over the
next few minutes. Samantha arrived, and it was lovely
to see her! Huge hugs, as always happens when we
meet again! She disappeared backstage, and I went for
another pint of Banks’s Bitter.
And then Girls With Guitars hit the stage! Straight in
with their cover of Keith Richards’ and Mick Jagger’s
“Bitch”. This has almost become their signature tune
after that wonderful YouTube video which has grabbed
so many people by the throat: utterly magnificent!
Sadly the sound was not the best, and although it was
rectified by the 2nd or 3rd song, this should not have
been necessary, as they sound-checked beforehand!
And frankly, the sound man’s excuse to me about
needing to make adjustments to suit the people in the
room was laughable, as sadly there were only 36 people
in. I know, because I counted them.
12 PKCBs -june 2011
They played many songs
off the “Girls With
Guitars” CD, including the
one that is perhaps my
favorite, Cassie Taylor’s
“Leaving Chicago”. Cassie
very sweetly dedicated
it to me, and of course
it contained a wonderful
Samantha Fish slide solo,
which I adore! While
I am on the subject of
Samantha’s guitar playing,
I must say that it
improves each time I see
her. She played some
great solos, but her slide playing is hair-on-the-backof-the-neck
stuff for me. She has both authority and
confidence, and it is a joy to behold!
The first set ended with another song off the CD, their
version of Paul Pena’s “Jet Airliner”, which was a Top 10
hit for the Steve Miller Band. Great stuff.
In a chat with Samantha during the interval, she told
me how Thomas Ruf and Mike Zito were instrumental
in getting the girls together. They announced tonight
that they are having such a good time that they hope to
continue it into next year. This is very good news indeed.
I eagerly anticipated the second set, and it did not
disappoint! Highlights? There were many. Their version
of “Highway to Hell”, for example, rocking it up like there
was no tomorrow!
Then, later in the set, Cassie knocked me dead with an
incredible version of the song made famous by Billie
Holliday, “Strange Fruit”. Let us never forget what
that song is about. You could have heard a pin drop.
Cassie – that was incredible.
Each of them played material off their solo CDs. Dani
played some songs off her “Shine” CD which were very
well received. Samantha played several songs off her new
CD “Runaway”, including the title song and also “Down
In The Swamp”. On the basis of what I heard, this CD is
a must-have … and Samantha presented me with a copy
of it afterwards! Thank you Sam – love you!
But perhaps the most “personal” moment of this
“soloing” came during the second set, when Cassie sat
down on the edge of the stage and invited us all to close
in around her while she played two songs on the ukulele.
An utterly beautiful moment.
All too soon it was over. They finished with The Beatles’
“With A Little Help From My Friends”, Dani playing a
simple acoustic accompaniment. A lovely way to end the
evening, with everyone singing along.
I asked a few people for their opinions of the night, and
it was 100% positive. One guy I spoke to said that if they
play there again, word will have got round about them, and
that the first time Walter Trout played there, there were
only about 150 in. I hope he is right, that they DO come
here again, and that next time the place is crammed to the
rafters. They deserve it.
Cassie Taylor, Dani Wilde, Charlie Monck ,Samantha Fish, and Denis Platin
And so, on May 6th, to The Boom Boom Club in Sutton,
about 15 miles from London. Unfortunately on the way
there I crashed my car, but still arrived in time to hear
the end of the sound check. Some guys at the club kindly
gave me some tape to stick my car together with(!). The
girls were all concerned about me, and Samantha came
out to see the
damage, and
was amused
by all the Kansas
City blues
stickers in the
back window!
The Boom Boom Club can probably hold about 200
people, and Samantha – bless her! – put my name on
the door!
Friends … this was an utterly magnificent evening.
They played to quite a full house, and the audience was
clapping and cheering each song like crazy. Highlights
of the evening for me were hearing Cassie Taylor
playing keyboards for the first time, on another
FABULOUS number of hers called “Haunted”. Then
Dani and Samantha’s steamy guitar solos, sometimes
complementing each other, sometimes fighting a duel!
And to top it off, Denis Palatin’s drum solo was just
OUTRAGEOUSLY good! I am going to write no more
about this gig, simply because words cannot do it
justice. It was one of those “I was there” gigs: it was
THAT good.
My poor wounded little car safely got me the 110 miles
home (after I slept the night in it!) and then about the
same distance again to the city of Derby, where the
evening of May 7th found me parked opposite The
Flowerpot. All you really need to know about Derby is
that the local football team, Derby County, has been
renamed “Derby County Nil” by some people, due
to their inability to score goals! But to the gig … the
Flowerpot is a bit smaller than the previous night, with
a very compact stage. I could hear the sound check as I
arrived, so I contented myself with some excellent beer
from the large choice available. Then the girls appeared,
and as it was Dani’s mother’s birthday there were
celebrations going on as well! When Girls With Guitars
hit the stage, the room was quite full, with an appreciative
and knowledgeable audience. Throughout the
evening, the end of each song was greeted with massive
cheers, and the band excelled themselves. All three
afternoons fondly remembered as the “Blue Royal
Matinee”. In 1999 he recorded the ever popular CD
“Three Faces” for KC’s Red Hot Records. In 2004
Millage Gilbert was crowned the “King of the
Festival” at the Kansas City Kansas Street Blues
Fest. He is a regular performer at that event. In
KCBs june 2011 P
Girls With Guitars continued from page 12
played songs off of their CDs. They have already proved
their song writing ability, Dani with songs such as
“Abandoned Child”, about the incredible work that she
does in the slums of Kenya, Cassie with “Haunted”, off her
FABULOUS “Blue” CD, and “Leaving Chicago” (which they
did not play tonight), and Samantha with “Runaway”. But,
tonight, I have to single out Samantha. She
tore the place apart with her guitar playing, and
totally won the hearts of the people of Derby. The whole
room was cheering at the end. A FANTASTIC night!
Cardiff, where they played on May 8th, was too far for
me to go with work the next day, and so it was that I
arrived at The Borderline in London on May 9th, for
the last gig in their tour. It’s opposite Foyles bookshop
on Charing Cross Road, and a similar size to the Boom
Boom Club. Sadly they operate a “no cameras” policy,
and confiscated mine on the way in. Of course that
didn’t stop people with phones and small cameras, which
annoyed me a bit …This turned out to be a great night. A
very appreciative audience, but yet again the sound was
not right for the first song: THIS IS UNPROFESSIONAL!
Not YOU, girls … I’m talking to the club here. Eventually
it was sorted. For their last gig in the UK, Girls
With Guitars played a blinder! Too many highlights to
mention, but if I had to pick one, I would have to be
selfish and choose Cassie Taylor’s “Leaving Chicago”,
which was not in the set, which a lot of us were shouting
for at the end, which they did as a second encore, and
which Cassie dedicated to (and SANG !) to ME! It was a
perfect end to a wonderful tour. It was also good to meet
Beyond The Blues
Thomas Ruf of Ruf Records again (I’d met him at the
Quasimodo gig in Berlin in February), and to talk with
him about what help I could be in getting future gigs for
the girls in the UK.
A little postscript … I arrive in Kansas City on June 17th.
And guess who is playing at Knuckleheads the day after?
YESSSSSS!! GIRLS WITH GUITARS!! It will be great for
all of you to welcome them to Kansas City, and a wonderful
return to Kansas City for me too … and I suspect
that it may make me the first person to have seen Girls
With Guitars in Europe, England AND the USA! See you
there!
