NAN WHITLEY<br />

Head Coach<br />

Nan Whitley enters her 25th season as coach of the<br />

women’s softball program at <strong>Cat</strong>awba. During seven seasons<br />

of slow pitch softball (1983-89), her teams won 69 percent of<br />

their games (178-79). Whitley, with the assistance of her husband,<br />

Cecil, won five slow-pitch conference or district championships<br />

in the 1980s. In 1990, <strong>Cat</strong>awba and the entire South<br />

Atlantic Conference moved to fast-pitch competition.<br />

In 17 years of fast-pitch competition, the Lady Indians have<br />

posted a 323-423-3 record, including a school-record 41 wins last season. <strong>Cat</strong>awba had<br />

recorded a then school-record 28 wins in 2004 and 2006. Overall, Coach Whitley’s<br />

record stands at 501-502-3.<br />

Over the years, the Whitleys and their players have developed family-like relationships.<br />

The 1987 team stands out more than any other, due to its 39-7 record. The 39<br />

victories stood as the most in a single season for any sport in the history of <strong>Cat</strong>awba<br />

College athletics until 2004.<br />

Whitley hails from Ephrata, Pa., were she enjoyed an outstanding athletic career at<br />

Ephrata Area High School. She came to <strong>Cat</strong>awba and played field hockey and softball.<br />

She graduated in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education.<br />

Whitley served as the <strong>Cat</strong>awba field hockey coach from 1982-2000, posting a 128-163-<br />

13 record and a Deep South Association championship in 1988.<br />

Due to her outstanding accomplishments as a two-sport athlete and coach at<br />

<strong>Cat</strong>awba, Whitley became the first woman inducted into the school’s Sports Hall of<br />

Fame on April 3, 1993.<br />

Nan and Cecil reside in Salisbury. They have a daughter Adrian, an assistant in the<br />

softball program, and a son, Alex.<br />

ADRIAN GANTT<br />

Assistant Coach<br />

Adrian Gantt begins her eighth season as an assistant coach for<br />

the <strong>Cat</strong>awba College softball program. In 2006, she took over as<br />

head coach of the field hockey team. She is a 1998 graduate of<br />

<strong>Cat</strong>awba, earning a bachelor of arts degree in biology. Gantt<br />

earned a master of science degree in exercise science at<br />

Appalachian State in 2000.<br />

Gantt was a two-sport athlete at <strong>Cat</strong>awba, playing four years of<br />

field hockey and softball. She was a two-time All-American in<br />

field hockey and twice earned All-South Atlantic Conference honors in softball. Gantt<br />

received the Lomax Award for <strong>Cat</strong>awba’s top senior female athlete in 1998.<br />

At East Rowan High School, Gantt earned nine letters. She earned all-county and allconference<br />

honors in cross country and helped the softball team to a pair of state tournament<br />

appearances.<br />

Gantt and her husband, Jim, reside in Salisbury. Jim is the <strong>Cat</strong>awba head baseball<br />

coach.<br />

SHANE PRESCOTT<br />

Assistant Coach<br />

Shane Prescott is in his second season as an assistant coach<br />

with the <strong>Cat</strong>awba College softball team. He also serves as an assistant<br />

coach with the <strong>Cat</strong>awba field hockey team.<br />

Prescott comes to <strong>Cat</strong>awba from Pfeiffer University. He was<br />

with the Falcon program for six seasons and was head coach the<br />

last four years.<br />

A 1995 graduate of Randolph Community College, Prescott<br />

earned an associate degree in applied science. He graduated in<br />

1999 from Blue Ridge Healing Arts Academy with a license to practice massage and bodywork<br />

therapy.<br />

Prescott resides in Concord with his wife, Jennifer. They have a daughter, Adda (4).<br />
