From the Chronicler
Greetings!
I would love to hear from people in the Barony; submissions for the newsletter would be great, but
please feel free to also drop me a line and tell me what you’d like to see in and from this newsletter.
I will be bringing sign-up sheets with me to practices and events so that we can get more online
subscribers (having the newsletter emailed directly rather than having to download it from the group
list).
I can be reached at carnabyservices@yahoo.com.
I’d love to hear from everyone in the Barony!
Yours in Service, Tiercelin
LINK OF THE MONTH:
CHICHESTER, INC
While some of the products are pricey, this is the only place to go when you need Hungarian hampster
skins collected in the wild by gypsies (I kid you not). They also have any other kind of skin you
can think of (ermines for $15!) from reindeer to coyote, zebra to fox. Tons of other great stuff like
porcupine quills, real dinosaur dung, horn, antler parts, wolf claws, wooly mammoth tusk from Siberia,
a great line of historic children’s toys, shells and beads, sinew, and yes - Frank’s missing fingers (these you have
to see for yourself). Check it out and have fun browsing! -- Tiercelin
From the Baron:
Thank you, everyone who helped out at the Castle Event. The day was awesome. Baronial 12th Night is coming soon and
I would like to have brief meetings with all of the members of the Baronial Orders to discuss awards to be handed out at
Ice Dragon (and beyond). I would also like to get some award recommendations before 12th Night so that we will have
people to discuss. You do not have to be a member of a particular order to recommend someone for it.
From the Fencing Marshal:
My term of office is officially up, this month. As the only other active marshals have life to deal with at the moment, I will stay on as
Baronial Marshal for the foreseeable future. We have been changing sites for Fight Practice depending on availability; please check the
Hael E-Groups on Wednesdays for a posting of the location. Or, E-mail me before 5pm and I will send you the location.
From the Scribal Guild
At the December 9th at the Scribal Guild Meeting nominations were accepted for the new scribal guild minister. Voting will be at our
January meeting at 7 pm at Sweet Melody’s on Transit on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. However, there is an attendance requirement: in
order to vote, one must have attended at least 4 of this years’ meetings.
Morwenna Everdon, Scribal Guild Minister
From the Siege Guild
Greetings from the Siege Guild,
We sponsored the Children’s Siege Contest at Have Fun Storming The Castle. For of our Kingdoms finest young lads; Wilhelm, Cole,
Luke and Alex met on the shooting range of the Castle and did lay siege to our toy castle targets with their table top siege weapons, All
four conducted themselves well and were good sports as they had fun as well. In the end Alex von dem Steine won in a very close Finals
Match with Cole. It was great fun.
Our next sponsored competition will be Ice Dragon in March. Adults and youths are welcome to compete. The rules and info are
posted on the IceDragon event site as well as the Siege Guilds site.
Demo Report
Last month I posed a question to the populace about their feelings on participation in multi-day demos. As of the December barony
meeting I have received a total of nine replies to this survey. Seven were in favor and two were against. Though I am not surprised at the
low response, it does bring to light the steady decline of participation to member ratio throughout the barony.
Much like events, public demos are a way of bringing much needed revenue to the baronial coffers. But unlike events which are mostly
attended by established members, demos are what bring in new people which are essential to the society’s existence.
I realize demo dates sometime conflict with other events people usually attend, so with this in mind I would like to establish a set calendar
of yearly demos which will be needed to be manned by our members and have them posted on the AEthelmearc Kingdom Calendar.
This way no one can say they did not know of an upcoming Hael demo and made plans to be elsewhere.
Yes, we have a lot of activities crammed into our daily lives between work, family obligations, fighter/martial arts practices, events and
non-SCA events. Add to this the cost of vehicle travel and the decision on what is feasible and what is not may seem overwhelming at
times, but we who are the SCA are strong and adaptable.
The demo calendar for 2009 will feature one demo a month running from May through October for a total of six demos for the year.
These are listed below. This office is not asking anything terribly out of the ordinary other than a stretch of your talents for one or two
days a
time to do so. I will be posting all of the upcoming demos on the Hael e-group page and would like to start to form a data base of who
will be able to attend these yearly demos. At least three of the six mentioned demos are already listed on the 2009 Kingdom calendar as
hopefully will be the rest.
ARE YOU A GARBAHOLIC?
Some warning signs that you may indeed be a garbaholic:
...you consider Early Period to be 1530s.
...you have seriously considered hemming a gown with duct tape
when you were running out of time before an event.
...you have hemmed a gown with duct tape.
...your lord husband’s first aid kit consists of bandages, tiger balm,
spare rivets, and duct tape. Yours consists of 12 different sizes of
emergency pearls, 15 different spools of thread, needles, replacement
cabochon stones, an extra chemise, spare corset lacing...and
duct tape.
...you are not worried about not having enough pearls to finish
your new court gown. If worse comes to worse, you’re sure there
are enough on your sewing room floor.
...it’s a seven hour drive to the event. Everyone else in the van is
sleeping. You are sewing.
...a handsome noble takes your hand to kiss it. As he lifts it to his lips, you are checking the seams on
his sleeve.
...it’s not a 1940s whole mink stole, it’s three potential Zibellinis.
...your mother proudly shows you her new living room curtains. You figure you can get both an Elizabethan
for you and a doublet for your husband out of them.
...someone asks your lord what he is knitting. He says, “chainmail.” Someone asks you what you are
knitting. You reply “I am knitting Eleanora of Toledo’s stockings from the 1500s with pure silk yarn
on size 1 double-pointed needles. I have 12 pages of documentation.”
