in Arts degree. She plans to continue her studies beyond FKCC

Associate in Arts (university transfer) 

Florida Keys Community College’s Associate in Arts 

(A.A.) is designed for students who plan to transfer to 

a four- year institution to complete a bachelor’s degree. 

Similar to being at a university, FKCC A.A. students 

spend two years focusing on general education courses, 

in preparation for two more years in a concentrated field 

of study at a university. 

The A.A. degree requirements include: 

• 36 credit hours of “general education” courses 

• 24 credit hours of elective or “university transfer” 

courses 

During their two years at FKCC, students are encouraged 

to develop and adopt a “Transfer Plan” with help from 

an academic advisor. Following a Transfer Plan basically 

means that a student chooses his/her elective courses 

based on the major that he/she intends to pursue 

a bachelor’s degree in. Transfer plans can also be 

customized for a particular university. 

Since FKCC is part of the Florida College System, all 

A.A. graduates are guaranteed certain rights under the 

statewide Articulation Agreement that governs the 

transfer of all Florida community college graduates to 

the state university system. However, guarantee of 

university admission does not guarantee admission to 

limited access programs, which may require a certain 

grade point average, test score, portfolio, and/or 

audition.

Business 

The business world is dynamic and constantly 

expanding; those holding a business degree or 

certificate are better prepared to succeed. In FKCC’s 

Associate in Science in Business Administration 

program, students will master management, critical 

reasoning, computer, and communications skills that will 

be in demand throughout one’s career. This program 

instructs students in a range of essential topics needed 

to succeed in business—whether in the private, public, 

or service sectors. Students will be prepared for entrylevel 

jobs in management, marketing, personal selling, 

accounting, and financial services. 

The Certificate in Entrepreneurship is designed to 

provide individuals with the skills and knowledge 

necessary identify innovative opportunities and to start 

and improve their own business. Students will develop 

a portfolio of assignments throughout the coursework 

that will culminate in a business plan presentation to 

community members. To prepare for this capstone 

event, students will first learn the fundamentals of the 

business environment. Subsequently, this knowledge 

will provide a foundation for students to create a 

marketing plan and pro forma financial statements.

of E-Commerce and related electronic business 

enhancement.

Computer Science 

Computer science is one of the fastest-growing 

industries and permeates all business sectors 

throughout the world. As technology constantly 

evolves, the demand for well-trained computer science 

professionals remains strong. 

The Associate in Science in Computer Information 

Technology prepares students for jobs such as PC 

support specialist, help desk specialist, microcomputer 

specialist, network specialist, software specialist, and 

information systems specialist. This degree prepares 

students for CompTIA industry certification. 

The Associate in Science in Computer Programming 

and Analysis prepares students for jobs such as 

computer programmer aide, junior programmer, senior 

programmer, data manager, programmer analyst, and 

mid-range computer specialist. Both technical and nontechnical 

subjects are offered to broaden the individual’s 

perspective and horizons in the field of computer 

science. 

The Computer Programmer Certificate is designed 

to provide students with the skills to work under the 

leadership of a senior professional, providing support 

through the design, development, implementation 

and maintenance of a company’s internally developed 

application services. Certificate courses may be applied 

to the AS in Computer Programming and Analysis.

Marine Engineering, Management and 

Seamanship 

In the Florida Keys, boating is a year-long business that is 

enjoyed by both locals and visitors. Boats provide access 

to our unique and beautiful offshore surroundings and 

are essential to a number of industries, including but not 

limited to tourism, diving, fishing, marine science, and 

transportation. Therefore skilled marine mechanics and 

qualified boat captains are constantly needed. 

FKCC’s Marine Engineering Department offers courses 

for individuals who wish to pursue careers in the marine 

industry, as well as the weekend boater. The Associate 

in Science in Marine Engineering, Management, 

and Seamanship is designed to prepare graduates to 

enter the professional mariner world by learning about 

vessels from the keel up. All phases of marine servicing 

instruction follow industry standards. 

The department also offers a one-year vocational 

program to earn a Marine Engineering (Propulsion) 

Certificate. It is designed for students who want training 

in marine gasoline and diesel engines, fiber glassing, or 

welding without immediately pursuing an A.S. degree. 

However, the coursework in the certificate program can 

be applied to the A.S. 

FKCC also offer captain’s licensing for the professional 

mariner, including: Operator of an Uninspected Vessel (6 

Pack), 100 ton Master Upgrade, Coastal Navigation, and 

Basic Seamanship.

Marine Environmental Technology 

Our prestigious Marine Environmental Technology 

program is one of FKCC’s most exciting, challenging, 

and attractive fields of study. The unique Keys 

environment provides students with a natural outdoor 

laboratory, which is representative of actual work 

environments in the field. This makes our program oneof-a-kind. 

We provide traditional theoretical classroom 

knowledge supported by a practical hands-on learning 

environment where the ocean is the laboratory. 

Students will apply state-of-the-art marine 

environmental conservation and restoration technology 

while learning technician level scientific skills including 

marine data collection, analysis and writing technical 

reports. In addition, students will learn and develop a 

skill set, including but not limited to, seamanship and 

basic marine engine theory that will provide the most 

success in an ocean-oriented career.

Nursing and Allied Health 

Diving Business and Technology 

FKCC’s James E. Lockwood Jr. School of Diving and Underwater 

Technology is one of the premier underwater education 

centers in the country. Faculty members have a broad range 

of expertise from recreational and commercial diving to 

military and public safety fields. The school’s superior facilities, 

located at “The Point” on the Key West Campus, include a 

40-foot deep controlled lagoon environment, secure training 

platforms, a complete dive locker of basic, advanced and 

specialty equipment, low and high pressure air stations, and 

an Olympic-size pool. Divers also enjoy access to a living coral 

reef just seven miles off the coast of Key West. 

The Associate in Science in Diving Business and 

Technology will prepare students to enter diving specialty 

areas such as recreational diving, work/commercial diving, 

public safety diving, research diving and hyperbaric dive 

medicine. Graduates may be qualified to work as instructors 

at destination resorts, dive technicians for research programs, 

divers for underwater construction and inspection firms, as 

well as operators of diving and hyperbaric facilities. 

Diving Certificates are designed for those students who 

want training in diving technology without immediately 

pursuing the Associate in Science degree. These courses may 

also apply to the A.S. in Diving Business & Technology if a 

student later decides on that option. Students are encouraged 

to take the Fundamentals of Professional Diving course 

before choosing one of the following certificates to pursue: 

Fundamentals of Professional Diving, Commercial/Work 

Diving, Professional Dive Instructor, Professional Research 

Diving, and Diving Medical Technician. 

A variety of industry certifications are available through 

agencies such as DAN and PADI. Also, as a member of the 

American Academy of Underwater Sciences, FKCC offers an 

FKCC/AAUS Scientific Diver Certification. 

Institute for Public Safety 

With the increasing growth in Florida’s population, and 

the need to replace retiring officers, the job outlook 

for law enforcement is very favorable. Becoming a 

law enforcement officer is a challenging but deeply 

rewarding career. The fundamental duty of a law 

enforcement officer is to serve the community by 

safeguarding lives and property, protecting the 

innocent against deception, helping the weak against 

oppression or intimidation, and combating violence and 

crime. Ultimately law enforcement officers protect the 

constitutional rights of all to liberty, equality and justice. 

FKCC’s Institute for Public Safety offers Basic Recruit 

Academies in Basic Law Enforcement, Corrections, and 

cross-over training between the two disciplines. We 

also offer advanced and specialized training courses 

for commissioned officers. Coursework encompasses 

training in legal procedures, communications, vehicle 

operations, investigations, defensive tactics, first aid, 

traffic stops, firearms, patrol techniques and crowd 

control. 

Students interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree in 

Criminal Justice are encouraged to pursue an A.A. by 

adhering to the Criminal Justice Studies “Transfer Plan.” 

FKCC is articulated with St. Leo’s University, so FKCC 

graduates can easily transfer into SLU’s Criminal Justice 

Bachelor of Arts program.

The FKCC nursing program, approved by the Florida 

Board of Nursing, is designed to provide individuals 

with the intellectual and technical competence 

necessary to deliver quality care as registered nurses 

in the diverse healthcare delivery system of today’s 

society. FKCC’s instructional staff are dedicated to 

working collaboratively with students to promote 

achievement of individual academic success and 

enter the field of nursing as qualified clinicians. 

The Associate in Science Degree in Nursing 

is awarded upon completion of the twenty-two 

month generic RN program. The FKCC nursing 

program graduate is then eligible to apply for the 

state licensing exam. Successful completion of the 

NCLEX-RN exam grants licensure for an individual to 

work within the established guidelines as defined 

by the scope of practice for a registered nurse. FKCC 

proudly boasts that 100% of the graduates of the last 

several nursing classes passed the NCLEX-RN. 

Admission 

The A.S. in Nursing is a limited access program with 

a selective admission process. The specific deadlines 

are determined each year and can be found posted 

on the Nursing Program page on the college’s 

website at www.fkcc.edu. Licensed Practical Nurses 

may challenge the first semester of nursing course 

work and enter the RN program in Fall or Spring 

based on eligibility and seat availability. 

Emergency Medical Technician 

FKCC’s Emergency Medical Technician program equips 

students with the skills, experience, and confidence to 

become a hero. In just one semester of study, students 

will have the foundation that will enable them to make 

critical split-second decisions during any basic medical or 

traumatic crisis. Students who successfully complete all 

requirements will earn an Applied Technology Diploma 

and will be eligible to take the certification examination to 

become an Emergency Medical Technician- Basic (EMT-B). 

Students entering the program must have completed a 

First Responder for Medical Professionals (EMS 1059C) or 

be a Registered Nurse or physician. EMS 1059C is offered 

each Fall term at FKCC. 

The EMT-B program is designed for both individuals who 

wish to pursue a career in EMS as well as professionals 

who currently work in emergency care, such as firefighters, 

law enforcement officers, volunteer rescue personnel, and 

lifeguards. 

As an EMT-B, you may find employment in agencies such 

as city/county EMS systems, private ambulance services, 

hospitals, clinics, fire departments, air ambulance services, 

and hyperbaric chamber treatment centers. In the state of 

Florida, a licensed physician, dentist, or registered nurse 

may apply for certification as a paramedic and challenge 

the paramedic examination provided he/she holds an EMT 

certificate, which is current and in good standing.

Community Education and Testing Center 

(non-credit courses) 

The Community Education and Testing Center offers a 

wide range of non-credit classes and seminars designed 

to help you fulfill your potential—both personally and 

professionally. You’re invited to take up a new hobby, 

explore your artistic side, or get in better shape through 

FKCC’s many recreational, leisure, and physical fitness 

opportunities. A variety of classes are also offered 

for professional growth to prepare, update, or refine 

employment skills. 

Classes are scheduled on both weekdays and weekends. 

Additionally, you can learn conveniently from home 

through online courses. FKCC can also develop non-credit 

training programs to meet the specific needs of business, 

industry and/or government organizations, and may be 

held at any location in Monroe County. 

Steps to Becoming an FKCC Student 

1. Transcripts 

Request official college or high school transcripts be sent to 

FKCC‘s Office of Enrollment Services. 

2. Placement Test 

Florida Keys Community College primary placement test, the 

Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) is appropriate 

for those who have not taken the SAT or ACT, or whose SAT or 

ACT scores are more than two years old. PERT replaces the CPT. 

The purpose of PERT is to help provide information about 

your skills in the English language, reading, and mathematics. 

Your test results will be used in the academic advising process 

to ensure that you enroll in the appropriate levels of English 

(communication/humanities), reading, and mathematics 

courses.

The DSST credit by exam program gives students the 

opportunity to receive college credit for life experience as 

a form of prior learning assessment. Recommended for 

credit by the American Council on Education, the 38 exams 

are offered in diverse subject areas such as health, ethics, 

finance and technology. The DSST program is owned by 

Prometric, the global leader in testing and assessment, 

and has been placing students on the fast track to college 

degrees since 1986.

How to Apply for Admission to FKCC 

Florida Residency 

To qualify as a Florida resident for tuition purposes you must 

be a U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident alien, or hold a visa 

status approved by the Florida Legislature. 

Living in or attending school in Florida does not, in itself, 

establish legal residence. Students who depend on out-ofstate 

parents for support are presumed to be legal residents of 

the same state as their parents. A Florida “resident for tuition 

purposes” is a person who has, or a dependent person whose 

parent or guardian has, established and maintained legal 

residence in Florida for at least twelve consecutive months 

immediately preceding their enrollment. Residence in Florida 

must be for the purpose of establishing a permanent home 

and not merely incidental to enrollment at an institution of 

higher education. Other persons not meeting the twelvemonth 

legal residency requirement may be classified as 

Florida residents for tuition purposes only if they fall within 

one of the limited special categories authorized by the Florida 

Legislature and Board of Regents. Florida Keys Community 

College will award Florida residency status for in-state tuition 

in accordance with state laws, rules and guidelines. 

The following guidelines summarize FKCC’s procedure for 

compliance. 

1. A student’s residency classification is determined at 

the time of admission. A non-resident may request 

reclassification after establishing residency in Florida as 

determined by the law. 

2. The law allows a United States citizen or eligible non-US 

citizen to be classified as a Florida resident if the student, 

or dependent student’s parent or legal guardian, has 

been a legal resident of the state of Florida for at least 12 

consecutive months immediately preceding the first day 

of classes for the term in which classification as a Florida 

resident for tuition purposes is desired. 

3. Living in Florida, attending school in Florida, or property 

ownership in Florida does not, in and of itself, establish 

residency for tuition purposes. 

4. All students must complete the Florida Residency for 

Tuition Purposes Affidavit. It must be signed by the person 

claiming residency. 

5. The affidavit form and all supporting documentation must 

be filed no later than the last day of Add/Drop for the term 

which classification or reclassification is sought. 

6. The affidavit will not be accepted until it is completed in its 

entirety and all documents are attached. 

Dependent vs. Independent 

Dependent Student: any person, whether or not living with his or 

her parent, who is eligible to be claimed by his or her parent as a 

dependent under the federal income tax code. 

Independent Student: any person who submits documentation 

that he or she provides fifty (50) percent or more of the cost of 

attendance for independent, in-state students as defined by the 

financial aid office at the institution (exclusive of federal, state and 

institutional aid or scholarships). 

Required Documentation 

1. At least two pieces of State of Florida approved supporting 

documentation are required with dates that evidence the 

12 month qualifying period. 

2. Proof of U.S. citizenship: Persons who were born outside 

of the United States but are claiming U.S. citizenship must 

provide proof of citizenship or naturalization. 

3. STUDENT UNDER THE AGE OF 24 is assumed to be a 

dependent: 

Parent or legal guardian must complete the affidavit and 

provide appropriate documentation. 

4. STUDENT UNDER THE AGE OF 24 who claims to be an 

independent: 

Student must sign the affidavit and provide documents 

supporting residency AND independent status. 

A copy of student and/or parent’s tax return may be 

required to document independent status. 

5. STUDENT 24 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER WHO CLAIMS TO BE 

DEPENDENT: 

Copy of parents tax return from previous year must be 

provided to document dependent status. 

Parent or legal guardian must complete the affidavit and 

provide appropriate documentation. 

Library/Learning Resource Center 

The FKCC Library/ Learning Resource Center is located on the 

Key West campus on the second floor of the Administration 

building (A). The reading room overlooks the beautiful bay 

and offers a breathtaking sunset view. Access to electronic 

resources is available online for distance learning students. 

Limited print resources are also available at the Middle and 

Upper Keys Centers. 

Membership & Library Cards 

Library cards are available to all FKCC students, faculty, staff, 

and Monroe County residents. Distance Learning students 

or students not in the area may go to the library’s website to 

apply online for an e-card. Their borrower id number 

will be emailed to them for immediate use of our electronic 

resources. Library users must present their valid library 

card to check out materials. The barcode on the card is your 

borrower id number and your pin is the last four digits of 

your social security number. They are used to access our 

eResources available 24/7 on our website. FKCC library card 

holders can also check out materials at the Monroe County 

Public Libraries in Key West, Big Pine, Marathon, Islamorada, 

and Key Largo locations. 

Collections 

The library has a variety of informational and recreational 

materials including books, eBooks, audio books, reference 

books, journals and periodicals, full text databases, music 

CD’s, videos, DVD’s, and video games. Please go to http:// 

library.fkcc.edu to search the online library catalog, 

LINCCWeb. 

Fees 

The library charges $0.05 per day per overdue item with a 

maximum of $5. Items not returned are charged the cost of 

replacement, plus a $10 processing fee. 

Books may be checked out for three weeks, and audiovisual 

items are due back in one week. All items may be renewed 

in person, by phone or email, or by logging into “my account” 

in LINCCWeb. 

The replacement fee for lost library cards is $1.00 and faxes 

cost $1.50 per page. 

Books from Other Libraries 

We can obtain materials not found in the FKCC Library. This 

process may take up to a week, so please plan ahead. 

Requests can be made from our online catalog, by filling out 

the electronic form on our website, in person, or by email. 

Contact our ILL Specialist for assistance. Customers will be 

notified when the item is received. They may be picked up at 

the front desk in Key West, or the items can be sent via 

courier to our Marathon or Coral Shores Center. 

ASK a Librarian 

“ASK a Librarian” is a statewide service that provides live online 

assistance from a librarian. The service provides all Florida 

citizens with live virtual reference services via computer or 

mobile device. It is available by clicking the “ASK a Librarian” 

logo on the library webpage or on the Distance Learning 

Platform. For quick answers, patrons can send a text to 

305-705-6994 fkc and receive a quick response. 

Copyright 

The library provides research assistance and training on 

copyright policy. Resourses are available in the copyright 

section of our website. . 

Research Assistance 

Research assistance is available from one of our highly qualified 

librarians. . This service is provided in person, via email, phone, 

or text. Library customers can also set up an appointment with 

a librarian for individualized help. 

Computers 

The library has two computer labs. The computers are available 

for student, faculty and community borrowers. Community 

borrowers are charged a monthly fee of $25; 2 months for $40; 

or $5 per day. Printing in the library is available through our 

WEPA Kiosks at $0.15 per sheet for black and white and $0.65 

per sheet for color copies. Copy cards can be purchased for $5 

each or credit cards can be used to deposit funds to accounts. 

A surcharge of $0.20 per transaction may be charged if using 

a credit card at the Kiosks instead of adding the funds to 

accounts. Priority is given to our student and faculty, but open 

access is available to all customers on Fridays from 9am to11 

am. Customers must observe the library and FKCC policies; and 

local, state, and federal laws regarding copyright and computer 

usage. 

Programs & Events 

The library also serves as an art gallery exhibiting the artwork of 

talented students, faculty, and local artists. The library provides 

further educational and cultural opportunities by hosting book 

discussions, workshops, forums, and movies. Visit our calendar

The library has two study rooms available for academic

Online, Hybrid, and Technology-Enhanced Courses 

The term “Virtual Campus” at FKCC refers to the college’s 

method of instruction delivered through technology. 

Courses offered through the Virtual Campus are offered 

in a way that the student and the instructor do not 

always need to be in the same place and/or at the same 

time in order for teaching and learning to occur. 

The FKCC Virtual Campus offers completely online 

courses, courses that are taught both online and 

traditional, and courses which meet in a traditional 

schedule but use online resources.

enrolled in the class (can take up to 48 hours) you will

Types of Virtual Courses 

“Online” courses can be taken with few or no campus 

visits and use one or many different types of technology 

for remote delivery of course materials. At least 80% of 

the instruction is completed with the student separated 

from the instructor by either location, time or both. 

“Hybrid” courses are a combination of web-based 

and face-to-face classroom instruction. A range of 

50% to 79% of the course is completed online. These 

courses have a definite on-campus meeting schedule, in 

addition to online activities. 

“Technology-Enhanced” courses meet in a traditional 

classroom setting but have resources, activities and 

assessments available online. 

Are you ready for Online Learning? 

Taking an online class requires advanced study habits, 

learning styles, technical skills and motivation to 

succeed that some traditional classes may not. Before 

you register for an online course, you must make 

sure online learning is right for you. 

If you have never taken an online course but are

Students must have access to a computer and an 

Internet service provider to access courses in order to

is still, and will always be, the most important resource 

in the virtual classroom. The Internet is simply another 

tool that a teacher can use to improve and enhance

Island TIME classes are located in the new, state-of-the art Student Success 

Center. Students attend class in one portion of the SSC, and then complete 

homework and testing at individual computer stations in the adjoining 

computer lab. The center is fully staffed with math tutors and lab assistants 

and is open on evenings and weekends to accommodate busy student 

schedules.

Financial Aid 

Your gateway to a variety of financial aid opportunities is completion of a FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal 

Student Aid. Students may be eligible for grants, loans, scholarships, and work study programs. If you plan to take 

classes at FKCC, you will need to complete the 2012-13 FAFSA. 

The application is a 3 step process: 

1) Apply for a PIN at www.fafsa.ed.gov. This step will require you and your parents (if you are under age 24) to 

enter identification information such as social security number and date of birth. The Federal government 

reviews this data and will return a PIN to you in 2 to 3 business days via email. 

2) Complete the 2012-13 FAFSA and enter FKCC’s Federal code 001485. 

3) You and your parents (if you are under the age of 24) will need to sign it electronically. 

Completed FAFSAs are submitted directly to the Federal processing agency and transmitted electronically to the 

college within a few business days. If your application is rejected, we will notify you in writing. 

If your application is selected for “verification,” you will receive a letter in the mail requesting:

FKCC’s Basic Law Enforcement Academy satisfies the 770-hour training requirements of the Florida Department of 

Law Enforcement and the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission. Upon passing the state certification 

exam, graduates will become Florida Law Enforcement Officers. 

Program coursework surveys the criminal justice system and provides training in basic law and legal procedures, 

communications, vehicle operations, investigations, defensive tactics, first aid, traffic stops, firearms, patrol 

techniques and crowd control.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age, a United States Citizen, a high school graduate or 

equivalent, have a Florida’s drivers license and a responsible driving record, must not have been convicted of a 

misdemeanor involving perjury, false statement or a felony, have not received a dishonorable discharge from any of 

the Armed Forces of the United States, be able to pass a Florida Department of Law Enforcement record check and 

medical examination, be able to pass a background investigation and pass the Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test 

(CJBAT).

a systems framework, students are introduced

and throat. The respiratory, musculoskeletal, 

cardiovascular, immunological, hematopoietic, 

integumentary systems as well as the special 

needs of the medical and surgical patient 

are also examined. Students are expected 

to formulate nursing care plans based on 

thorough assessments made of adult patients in 

the clinical setting and on knowledge of pathophysiology. 

Clinical Nursing II

Associate in Arts degree. Clinical Nursing II is 

designed to provide the student with additional 

theory and practice in more complex and 

specialized medical/surgical areas of nursing. 

Students are expected to apply facts and 

scientific principles from previous courses. 

Utilizing a systems framework, students 

are introduced to the geriatric patient and 

pathological conditions of the genitourinary, 

neurological hepatic and biliary systems. 

Areas of oncology, fluids and electrolytes, 

hemodynamics, and burns are also examined. 

Students are expected to formulate and apply 

nursing care plans based on thorough 

assessment of patients in the clinical setting 

and on knowledge of pathophysiology and 

psychosocial needs of the patient. 

Clinical Nursing III 

NUR 2818C 

Clinical Nursing III provides students 

with the opportunity to build upon 

knowledge and skills developed in previous 

nursing courses. Students are introduced to 

implementing principles of leadership and 

management. Classroom content relates to 

the preparation of the student for assuming 

the role of professional nurse. Prioritization 

and delegation are important concepts in 

this course. The clinical component is an 

individualized experience that is selected in 

collaboration with the faculty and an RN 

preceptor. One alternate preceptor may be 

designated. Guidelines for level II practicum 

experiences are defined by the Florida 

Board of Nursing in the Nurse Practice 

Act chapter 64B (15 a-g). All preceptor 

practicum experiences are to be obtained on 

an adult medical-surgical unit or floor. The 

only exceptions considered are for LPNs 

and require the permission of the faculty and 

program director. The clinical component 

of practicum will not commence until all 

requirements for NUR 2462C are successfully 

met. The preceptor must be approved by the 

nursing program and must be an RN licensed 

in the State of Florida. It is the responsibility 

of the student to meet with the preceptor to 

review clinical expectation and goals prior 

to beginning clinical time. The student must 

obtain a resume from the preceptor and a 

signed letter of agreement. 

Fundamentals of Nursing

Nursing is designed to introduce the student to

utilized in the practice of nursing. Concepts 

of health, stress adaptation, biological,

Clinical experiences are provided in both 

a practice laboratory and in various health

This introductory program surveys a wide 

range of knowledge, theories and ongoing 

research concerning marine mammals, animal 

husbandry, operant conditioning training 

practices and related issues, including 

instruction specific to the facility and its 

resident dolphins. This course offers students 

a unique opportunity to gain career oriented 

hands-on experience in dolphin husbandry 

and training, including diet preparation; 

how to feed, reinforce, and maintain 

established behaviors all under the guidance 

of accomplished animal trainers. Students 

will reside at the Dolphin Research Center on 

Grassy Key. Course requirements center on 

active participation in the course and passing 

comprehensive end of course exam.


Dolphin St & Field Exp II 

OCB 2313 

The class delves more deeply into the 

fields of behavioral science, animal care and 

training. The course allows students to build on 

the knowledge they acquired during the Marine 

Mammal Care & Basic Training and begin 

focusing on training new behaviors, exploring 

animal enrichment and contemplating more 

complex issues surrounding marine mammal 

care. Students will implement a training plan 

they have developed to train a new behavior 

to a dolphin. Public speaking skills will also 

be developed as students learn how to present 

dolphins and their training experiences to 

the public. At the conclusion of the course, 

students will showcase the new behaviors 

they have trained for Dolphin Research Center 

guests in a formal, narrated presentation. 

Students will also explore animal enrichment 

through directed activities implemented with 

our dolphins and sea lions. Under the guidance 

of our staff, students will create enrichment 

toys and activities for the animals and present 

these activities and toys to the animals 

throughout the week and observe the animals’ 

reactions. In order to better understand training 

differences between species and the need for 

flexibility in advanced training techniques, 

students will also apply their knowledge of 

training principles by teaching a new behavior 

to a canine Dolphin Lab participant. Each 

student will individually develop a training 

plan for the behavior to be trained, participate 

daily in regularly scheduled sessions with his/ 

her canine partner, and demonstrate progress to 

DRC staff at the end of the week. 

Field App Mar Sci: Rest Seagra

The students will learn why seagrass is 

important and why seagrass restoration is 

needed. They will also learn why the bird 

stake method is widely accepted for seagrass 

restoration. Students must master restoration 

methodologies including prop scar and blow 

out measurement, Braun Blanquet benthic 

assessment, bird stake construction and 

deployment and seagrass planting unit 

production and deployment. They must 

participate in the restoration of at least 50 m2 

of damaged seagrass. This course 

will have 2 lecture contact hours per week 

(=30 contact hours per semester) and 2 lab 

contact hours per week (=30 contact hours per 

semester). 

Introduction to Mariculture

This course is a survey of tropical 

Mariculture covering the wide range of the 

marine sea farm industry including the raising 

marine animals for use as food, recreation, 

pets, medical research and indicator species 

for man made toxins released into the marine 

environment by industrial processes and waste 

water runoff. The course includes the history 

of Mariculture, water chemistry, environmental 

requirements, pathology, and economic 

implications of the Mariculture industry today

Astronomy 

AST 1002 

Descriptive study of the elements of 

astronomy including the chemical composition 

and motion of the planets, their moons, 

comets and asteroids. Theories of solar system 

formation, the Sun and the universe 

are discussed and compared based on the 

physical and the chemical nature of matter. 

Such current topics as the “Greenhouse 

Effect” caused by increased levels of carbon 

dioxide in the atmosphere and “The Hole in 

the Ozone Layer” caused by the release of 

Flurochlorcarbons into the atmosphere are 

used to help understand the chemical nature 

of the atmospheres of other planets and their 

moons and the implications for planet Earth. 

Mathematical procedures are not stressed. Use 

of telescopes and computer software enhance 

the study of celestial objects. Recommended 

for liberal arts majors.

requirements of FKCC’s pre-nursing program
