My fellow anglers and friends,
May will be an exciting month with the Angling and Outdoor
Show at the end of the month, at Setia ECO Parks convention
center in Shah Alam, Selangor. This is the time of year where
anglers head out to the fair to see what’s coming in the near
future and return home with minds racing and hearts beating in wait for the arrival of
one’s dream products. This leads to sleepless nights and loads of Ipad tapping, Google
searching, etc.
Well, should I be wating for the arrival of a certain rod or reel, I too will be as eager as a
beagle awaiting its favourite biscuit. This got me thinking, perhaps we should organize
a fair too. Why not ay? Let’s see what transpires in the future.
Here is another exciting piece of news. With the collaboration of MGFA and Extreme
Anglers, custom stryled tuned rods are hitting our shores. They are not just hitting our
shores. They are hitting our shores with prices one cannot say no to. How much would
a custome rod cost? Now think this. How much will a custom rod cost if it were to be
mass produced? That answer is reason enough to stirr up major interest.
Look at the advertisement beside this note that I am writing. It’ll be happening in
June. Three clinics and 4 hours of fishing for RM150.00 per participant and its going to
take place at one of our testing grounds. RM150.00? That is seriously worth your hard
earned Ringgits. Unfortunately it is limited to only 50 pax so, you had better hurry.
Click on the Facebook link and be quick.
Hey, remember to come back here and enjoy this issue too. Well, I do hope that you
will enjoy this issue and pick up some fishing tips and knowledge and not just information
on fishing tackle.
Thank you for your support and happy reading.
Cheers,
Proving Waterproofing
Being an angler I do not like water
getting into my tackle box especially one
where I place my hooks, swivels, and
snaps. The main reason for not wanting
them wet is that they are made of materials
that will rust. It is no fun losing
fish because of a blunt hook or a broken
swivel or snap right?
X Robinson Case
19
Not Just Another C
When I wander about in a tackle shop, I
do not generally put emphasis on fishing
cases or tackle boxes. In fact these things
are further down my list of things to buy
while I am being overwhelmed by reels,
rods, lures, knives, etc. The VFOX Robinson
is not just another fishing case. It
is a case that looks good and feel good.
ase
21
How Good ?
Design wise it looks like a military case
used to transport missiles or plutonium.
It comes with spring activated latches
that pop up its internal covers. Its covers
are made of clear plastic thus one can see
what is inside each individual compartment.
That is not all. It is waterproof.
The Drowning
Most tackle boxes or cases will protect
what’s inside from splashes but what if
the box or case takes a dive into the water.
The VFOX Robinson RB-04 case is
waterproof. Just how waterproof is it.
To find out we decided to fill a bucket
of water and throw it in. We dropped in
like how you would drop a rock into the
water. The VFOX Robinson case floats.
25
Dropping doesn’t seem to do it harm so
we took a bottle of mineral water (1.5
litres), push the VFOX Robinson case
right to the bottom of the bucket, place
the mineral water bottle on it to hold it
down. We let it drown an hour (slightly
more) while we went about lab testing
other fishing tackles.
The Reveal
After an hour we removed the case and
opened it to see if water has gotten in.
The inside remains 100%, absolutely
dry. No water has gotten into the case.
Not one drop. So even if we had hooks,
swivels, snaps, etc. in it, they will all remain
dry. This makes it a good case for
river fishing on a canoe.
Verdict
The VFOX Robinson RB-04 case is one
case I really like. It is a case I can trust to
keep my hooks, swivels, and snaps safe
whether I am fishing on a boat out at sea
or on a canoe fishing some river. The
VFOX Robinson case cost more than the
average case but for what it can do, how
it looks, and feel... it certainly is worth
every dollar, dime, or penny, and in our
case, cent.

Abu Garcia Tournament K
Philemon Foo
Testing Grounds: Exotic Pond Rawang
Series: Tournament K
Model: TKS602HA
Length: 6’
Power: Heavy
Lure Wt.: N/A
Line Wt.: 10-20lb
Configuration: 2 pieces
Opponents: Asian catfish, Amazon red tail catfish
The Abu Garcia Tournament K is a
rod made for heavier fishing; bottom
or casting where there is a need to participate
in a little game of tug-of-war
with the finned opponent. For such a
rod there need to be enough power to
control the fish and a higher pressure
tolerance level.
35
Affordabl
e PoweR
The Tournament rod series has been
around for a long time sitting around
the mid low price range segment and
has been one of the favourite rods for
brown or striped snakehead anglers as
well as beach and jetty anglers. These
rods are tough yet do not cost an arm
or a leg making them one of the hottest
rod segments.
37
Basic Lo
Looks wise the Tournament K looks
basic in black with metallic red and
silver thread linings and red rings. Its
EVA handles are also black with basic
cylindrical design adorned with a red
ring for enhanced cosmetic outlook.
The Tournament K comes in a 24 ton
graphite blank giving it a feel of moderation
in both weight and balance.
oks
39
Compon
The Tournament K comes with K-
guides (non Fuji), quality EVA, Fuji
reel seat, and a rubber washer with the
Abu Garcia logo at the rear end of the
EVA handle. Using the rubber washer
certainly helps as the rod doesn’t slide
when placed standing and they are
easy to maintain.

Lab Tes
43
t
Reel: Okuma Azores
Line: Berkley Fireline Fused 20lb
Poundage: 20lb
We put the tournament K through the
pressure test to see if it can meet what
it advertises. To prove itself it needs
to achieve a max pressure of 20lb. We
managed to get it up the power curve
to about 17.2lb and that was it.
We took the Tournament K to our usual
testing ground, the Exotic Sports Fishing
Pond in Rawang, Selangor (Malaysia) to
put it against some of the hard fighting
predator fishes.
When it comes to casting, being a heavy
rod, casting out heavier pieces of bait is
easy. Lighter baits and casting will certainly
be hampered. We were casting out
live fish baits weight about 150g, easily.
We could get our baits to where areas we
wanted them to go.
45
Field Test
Reel: Okuma Azores
Line: Berkley Fireline Fused 20lb
Leader: Berkley Vanish 20lb
47
Fish Fighting
Coupled with the powerful Okuma Azores,
the Tournament K certainly showed who
the boss is. With relatively high drag setting
we were bullying predator fishes into
submission. The Tournament K certainly
has loads of power turning fishes away
from pillars, and a waterwheel. It takes little
time to bring in our finned opponents
for photos.
Verdict
If you are in the market for a no frills rod,
by a good established brand, and don’t
mind a little weight for good power and
durability, this rod could be on your “to
check out list.” Great for bottom fishing
be it on a lake, jetty, and boat.

When one is feeling restless and
gymnasiums crowded with machine
and weight hoggers, and you have this
need to work out your biceps, forearms,
abdominals, back, and to a certain
extent, legs. What do you do? You
pick up your killer rod, killer reel with
30 to 40lb of lines, and you head out
to a game of tug-of-war with monster
fishes.
59
The Killer R
I this case the killer rod is the Penn
Detonator Inshore. The Penn Detonator
Inshore is tough brute of a rod. It
comes with a rigid blank with loads of
power, and it is design to take a whacking,
and in return to give a whacking.
od
61
Weight And B
The Detonator Inshore is not the lightest
rod around but for its type of fishing,
it does fall into the light category.
However, with a reel on and in normal
fishing position (horizontal) the
weight disappears due to it being a
well balanced rod.
alance
63
Components
The Detonator comes with K-guides
unfortunately not by Fuji, quality EVA,
Fuji reel seat, and a rubber washer with
the Penn logo at the rear end. It’s EVA
comes crafted with a more aggressive
design adorned with copper coloured
washers.
Lab Testing
Reel: Penn Torque TRQ55
Lines: Berkley Big Game 40lb
Pressure Achieved: 27.5lb / 12.5kg
Back at our lab we tortured the Detonator
Inshore. It claims to be able to
handle up to 30lb of pressure and so
we expected it do so. It started out
very impressively pushing the scale up
to just over 10lb and there was a power
drop. Adding more force and bending
the rod even more we managed to get
it to 19.2lb.
67
We forced the rod all the way until we
decided that enough is enough and decided
to stop. The rod bent a scary bent
all the way pass the reel seat and our
meter read 27.5lb. We pushed more
but decided to stop since we were not
gaining any additional reading.
Field Testin
Penn Conflict Spinning
Line: Berkley Fireline Fused 20lb
Leader: Berkley Vanish 20lb
g
We took the Detonator to the Exotic
Sports Fishing Pond in Rawang, Selangor
(Malaysia) to put it against some
of the hard fighting predator fishes
and to see how well it performed in
the field.
71
Castability
The Detonator Inshore cast reasonably
well. We were getting our baits to
where we wanted them to go to. We
were fishing with live baits and they
were heavy enough for us to cast out
to a good distance.
Fish Fighting
Given the green light to go all out and
test the rod to its breaking point, we
did just that. We pushed up the drag
pressure and prepared ourselves for
a game of tug-of-war. We landed a
few brutes keeping very high pressure
throughout the fight, literally dragging
them in.
75
The Detonator Inshore certainly has
enough power to subdue these hard
fighting fishes with force should one
decides to do so but then not everyone
enjoys this form of fishing. I personally
do not, so after a while we were
back to some sensible, lighter pressure
fishing.
79
Verdict
The Penn Detonator Inshore has lots of
power stored in its blank. It power delivery
may not be consistent throughout
the blank but still it plenty enough
to win fights. The down side are its
non Fuji K Guides. Fuji K Guides will
certainly be great for such a rod and of
course so will its price.
When it comes to fishing, Penn is
like the household name of saltwater
fishing especially for big game. This said,
Penn rods are actually getting lighter
moving into the inshore segment. That
brings us the new Penn Battalion.
An Unassuming Rod
The Penn Battalion Inshore is a rod that
you would probably miss at tackle shops
as it does not stand out from the crowd
in terms of design. It looks quite bland
in black. Carbon fibre wrap with gold
coloured rings gives it some aesthetic
value but still not enough to turn heads.
85
Power In The Blanks
Should you pick it up from a crowd of
black rods and play around with it you
will realize that the Battalion is not about
looks but power. It’s got this strong back
bone that helps with fight management
and yet it is quite lightweight.
87
Fuji K Guides & Reel Seat
The Battalion Inshore comes high quality
Fuji K guides that provides tangle
free fishing and fast dissipation of heat
of which reduces wear and tear of the
fishing lines. Fuji reel seats are known to
hold reels in seat securely, a very important
factor especially during the battle
with a brute.
Contoured High Quality EVA
The Battalion Inshore comes with a
contoured handle made of high quality
black EVA. It is contoured to provide
a comfortable grip and support. At the
end of the EVA handle is rubber ending
with the Penn emblem on it. Using rubber
helps the rod stand straight with less
sliding.
LAB Test
Equipment Used
Reel: Penn Torque TRQ55
Lines: Berkley Big Game 40lb
Pressure Achieved: 20.5lb / 9.3kg
Back at our lab we wanted to see if the
Battalion will be able to meet its 25lb
max pressure. We put it to the pressure
test and push the Battalion. It has
a decent and consistent power curve
building all the way to 14lb. There after
we pushed really hard and managed to
reach 20.5lb and seems to have maxed
out. There came the cracking sounds
and It felt as if it was about to give up.
Field Test
We tested the Battalion at the Exotic
Fishing Pond in Rawang (Selangor, Malaysia)
on two occasions. On both occasions
we used live baits and soft baits of
various weights. Casting these baits out
was no issue as the Battalion Inshore
casts really well getting baits really far
out.
Power Tools
The Battalion Inshore fought like a power
tool. We had our drags up quite high
during the tug-of-wars with the brutes
and we were dragging brute out of the
danger zone. The Battalion Inshore certainly
has loads of power stored up in its
blank and more to give.

103
105
Verdict
The Penn Battalion Inshore may not
be a good looker but what it lacks in
looks it certainly make up for in power.
The Battalion Inshore has got lots
of power and it is one tough rod made
to battle inshore monsters. Here is another
When we first tested the Drop Flick
about a year or so ago, we were blown
away by how light and well balanced
it is. This Drop Flick Micro Mania follows
on with being very light weight
and well balanced
It comes with high quality EVA handles
with a split rear section of which
offers both weight saving and good
aesthetics.

Equipment Used
Reel: Penn Torque TRQ55
Lines: Berkley Big Game 40lb
Pressure Achieved: 10.4lb / 4.7kg
At our lab we put the Drop Flick Micro
Mania through the pressure test
to see if it lives up to its 4kg max drag
rating. It very confidently reached the
4kg rating and we decided to push a
little more as we felt confident that it
could. We pushed it to 10.4lb or 4.7kg
relatively easily and decided give it
the thumbs up.
Power Range
The Drop Flick Micro Mania has a
consistent power range with a very
nice and consistent curve all the way
to the achieved 4.7kg pressure at
about 70% from its tip section. Can it
do more? It certainly can.
Very well balanced. Place it horizontally and the weight
Fuji components that are lightweight and tough. Love
the K Guides.
Carbon wraps that add some sportiness to it.
X Wrap that gives it additional toughness and power.
Love the consistent power and nice curve.

Not So Likeable
Fore EVA goes hollow as it is crewed off the reel seat
to insert reel. The feeling is somewhat weird. In a way
it is needed to accommodate the EVA’s thickness of
which is nice but at the expense of this weird feeling.
Verdict
Don’t mind the small stuff and the all new Zen Zagan
give you countless hours of fun. It’s like Bumble Bee
who doesn’t like Bumble Bee?
Zen Zagan Slow Twitch
The Zen Zagan Slow Twitch joins the slow twitch rod
club looking swank in X wrapped blank that gives it a
distinct look of power. If it were to be a weapon in the
belongs to the dark side.
129
Tuned By Extreme
It comes in black with dark blue, and silver threads.
It has a longer fore handle / grip with a tiny rear EVA
knob ending. This could be done for both balancing
of the rod and support since a larger reel will mean
heavier weights of which brings the weight to the back
or rear of the rod. Without a reel secured to it, it is a
bit tip heavy.
The Slow Twitch feels light weight for its size or type
but it is by no means a rod made to play with smallish
fishes. It is made to give hard fighting brutes a tough
time.

145
m
This here is Zen Zagan’s bully, the Metal Mayhem. Being
a fan of metal music I was instantly attracted to its
name, Metal Mayhem. Don’t you think it makes a cool
name for a rock band? Well, in this case the word metal
probably directs your attention to metal jigs. The
Zen Zagan Metal Mayhem plays heavier metal.
Old School Looks
The Metal Mayhem looks somewhat like an old school
boat rod without the split handles / grip. What brings
it back to the future is the use of X wrap on its blank
that adds to its “metal” look. Imagine a Gibson Les
Paul with the neck of an Ibanez Steve Vai signature
guitar.

When it comes to power, the Metal
Mayhem certainly has lots and it also
has a consistent power range with a
Not So Likeable
What’s not so likeable is the inconsistent
down a gear to rebuild momentum
claimed 20lb max pressure and a little
more.

Verdict
The Abu Garcia Ikazuchi Ryoku II is a nice
within its power range due to
the construction of the blank but it will certainly
Fishing EZ Scent / Essenc
Scent has been used for fishing
for a very long time. Enhancing
baits with scent has been a norm in
many countries and such method
is also used by professional anglers
who use scent to up their game giving
the winning edge.
Fishing EZ scent or essence is a
concentrated potent pungent scent
that will enhance the scent of your
baits drawing fishes nearby towards
your baits. Doing so will greatly increase
you chance of catching fish
as the fishes are drawn into the area
where your bait is, following a scent
trail that leads right to your bait.
To use just add a bottle of Fishing
EZ scent / essence to 1 litre of water
and spray onto bait. Will not irritate
eyes and is safe on skin.

Fishing With Spoons Part 5 - B
Straight Retrieve
215
asic Presentations:
Philemon Foo
The most basic presentation for
spoons is to retrieve it in a straight line
at constant speed. This simply means to
retrieve your spoon at a constant speed
all the way back to the boat. It works for
a variety of fishes and it works most of
the time be it in saltwater or freshwater.
217
How It Is Done
It is a really simple presentation. Just cast your spoon
out. Allow it to sink to the bottom or to a depth that you
intend to fish. When it reaches that depth just crank it
back at a constant speed. The spoon will wobble, buzz,
drag the bottom, etc. (depending on its designed swim
action) all the way back to you.
This method of presentation, although basic, is very
effective for all types of fishes. All sorts of freshwater
fishes and saltwater fishes take spoons on a straight retrieve.
It works many a times but there are times that
this method needs a little tuning.
219
221
Matching
Speeds
Different fishes hit spoons at different speeds. All fish
probably think that they are faster than the other (who
knows) but not all fish can swim really fast and out
swim the kelah (mahseer), or the sebarau (Hampala
Barb).
223
Understand
Your Reels
The same can be said for reels. Some reels are like race
cars and are faster than others, while some are made
to cruise. If you’re fishing for snakeheads and you are
constantly catching them at a certain speed and after
changing to this spanking new reel, you suddenly stop
catching them; don’t blame the new reel. It is not a bad
luck reel. It is just that the speed is different.
225
Understand
Your Spoons
Another thing you need to look at is your spoon. Some
spoons can swim really well below a certain speed.
When you go above that speed it decides to just hang
on and enjoy the ride. Some spoons need to be worked
fast. Too slow and they look like debris.
227
What About
Nature?
With this I mean fast flowing rivers and slow flowing
streams, as well as different current speeds out at sea.
You will have to take into consideration these things
too. If you’re fishing a fast flowing river and you are
cranking like your spoon is in a race, certain fishes
may not be able to catch up.
229
Good To Be
Mindful
Pay some attention to these things. Cast out your
spoons and reel them back paying attention to how
they swim at certain speeds. Pay attention to how fast
you are cranking. Pay attention to the environment
that you are fishing in. Put them all together and match
your retrieving speed to them. Now you are ready to
cast out that spoon, use the straight retrieve method,
and catch some fish.
Note: try varying your cranking speed if you do not get
results and you know that the fishes are there.

Let’s Talk About B
The ABCs Of ABEC
231
Philemon Foo
earings: Part 2
You have probably heard about ABEC or at
least have heard the term ABEC used before.
If you’ve not heard of this term ABEC before,
well, welcome to the world of bearings. We all
talk about bearings and we talk about ABEC but
what is ABEC exactly?
The Higher ABEC The
Better?
Many an angler these days talk about ABEC
looking for bearings with higher ABEC ratings.
The reason is because the general believed thing
about ABEC is that the higher they are, the faster
they spin and the further you can cast. This is
correct in a literal sense. There is a but in here
somewhere thus a reason for this article.
ABEC
233
?
Definition
Of ABEC
So what is ABEC exactly? ABEC simply is an
accepted rating system for tolerance of bearings
within the bearing industry. ABEC is actually a
committee of the American Bearings Manufacturers
Association (ABMA). ABEC is short for
Annular Bearing Engineering Committee. So, it
is a bunch of engineers sitting down one day and
decided, “hmm, let’s call it ABEC.”
The ABEC rating or commonly known as ABEC
Scale, is a rating system given by manufacturers
of bearings to classify different levels of tolerances
(precision) of their bearings. The scale is
ABEC 1, 3, 5, 7, 9. The higher the ABEC rating,
the tighter the tolerance or the more precise it is.
ABEC does not take into consideration other factors
such as smoothness, torque, radial free play,
etc. It takes into consideration the dimensional
tolerances of the ball bearings and rings (inner,
outer, width).
235
Usage Of
High ABEC
Rated
Bearings
Higher ABEC rated bearings allow high speed
machinery to run at speeds that they are designed
to run at efficiently, if which the usage of
lower rated ABEC bearings may not be able handle.
Higher ABEC rated bearings do not make
these machines move any faster than the speeds
they are designed to run at. There is a significant
difference in both these sentences.
237
Back To The
But
So, does higher ABEC rated bearings mean that
your spool will spin faster and that you will get
much greater casting distances? Not necessarily
true. Yes, the higher ABEC rated bearings can
spin faster but the casting distance you get generally
depends on the weight, dimensions, wind
resistant levels of your lure, the weight and diameter
of your line, the condition of your reel, the
length of your rod, and of course your ability to
control your spool.
239
What We Think
So, would we recommend that you spend your
hard earned money buying expensive higher
ABEC rated bearings (ala ABEC 7 or even 9) for
your reels? No. Unless you are into competitive
distance casting then higher ABEC rated bearings
may give you the little extra edge and help
you clinch a trophy.
241
Itching To
Upgrade
But if you are like most of us, just fishing with
the hopes of landing a trophy fish and working
out some muscles, screw the higher ABEC rated
bearings unless the original bearings that came
with your reel are really screwed up themselves.
Anyhow, if you’re itching to upgrade, ABEC 5 is
plenty good.

Get Your Kids Fish
Junior Anglers
An Initiative By The Asian Angler Magazine
Fishing is a very healthy sport.
As anglers we enjoy fresh air, we
experience nature, we improve
our analytical skills, we absorb
vitamins from the sun, we expend
our minds, we learn about the
environment, etc.
There are so many benefits to
fishing and we should reduce our
kids addiction to video games,
computer games, playing with
mobile devices, etc. We should get
them to interact more with our
environment and teach them a
thing or two about life and living
life.
With this in mind we hope to
encourage you to take your kid(s)
fishing and have dedicated a section
of our magazine to Junior
My April Adventures
255
By Amirul Irfan
Fishing in April has been great despite the
crazy weather due to the inter monsoon season
that is going on. The crazy weather makes it
hard to understand fish feeding patterns and it
challenges me to learn more about fish.
Juvenile striped snakehead
fooled by the Berkley Powerbait
Saltwater T Tail Shad. Soft
plastics are very versatile to be
used almost anywhere and this
striped snakehead proves it.
257
Another juvenile fooled by the Berkley
Powerbait Saltwater T Tail Shad.
Both striped snakeheads were caught
by casting the soft plastic into groups
of baitfish taking refuge in hydrilla.
259
Another greedy juvenile striped
snakehead on a sniper brand soft
plastic with the same style used
for the Powerbait Saltwater T-Tail
Shad.After many failed hook sets
this juvenile was finally hooked.
261
My younger brother with a decent
striped snakehead caught on a
jumpfrog in one of the better days
where the pond water is still clear.
The jumpfrog was casted repeatedly
into submerged grass to call
out any predators.
263
265
A new soft plastic I tried recently
made by DrankCrazy. It has great action
and it is perfect for snakeheads.
I lost 2 snakeheads after taking this
photo because I set the hook too early.
Black and blue is my favourite colour
for soft plastics.
Hampala Barb fishing with my
cousin at a river near my home.A
total of 5 fish were hooked but all
managed to escape.I learned more
about sebarau feeding habits and
my cousin also thought me about
tying an FG knot quickly to join my
mainline and leader.
267
Idlan proudly showing his first fish
with the Zman MinnowZ. It took a
month to coax this fish. This fish has
hit many lures ranging from poppers
to soft plastics without being hooked.
269
The Zman MinnowZ is a great
soft plastic. The minnow profile
and it’s slow paddling motion is
irresistible to snakeheads.
271
My second decent striped snakehead
for the year. I was sightcasting
and when I saw it rise I made a quick
cast. This fish did not show interest
at first but then I saw a bulging
wake behind the lure and fish on!
273
The small minnow profile and tight
wiggling action of the countdown
is perfect for wary snakeheads. The
Golden Alburnus colour really helped
for the murky water conditions.
275
Juvenile striped snakehead subdued
by the Surecatch Pop Ranger.
A quick cast after I saw it rise produced
this grumpy little snakehead.
277
Another decent striped snakehead
to end the morning sightcasting session.
I noticed some grass moving
on the other bank and the Surecatch
Pop Ranger did the work to call out
this snakehead. This snakehead hit
the popper and flew out of the water
multiple times before getting hooked.
I am starting to question the relationship
between tarpons and snakeheads.
279
281
I have said this many times and I will
say it again, the firetiger colour is awesome.
I hooked a peacock bass the
next day but it managed to get away
when I lifted.
Thank you for reading amd we hope
that have more junior anglers in our
sport of fishing. Put down those game
consoles and pick up a fishing rod,
reel, and hook, and let’s go fishing.
Tight lines and happy fishing.
