Who Are We?<br />

<strong>FMC</strong> <strong>BioPolymer</strong> is a global supplier of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC),<br />

carrageenan, alginates, pectin and natural colors – sustainable ingredients<br />

that have high value-added applications in the production of food,<br />

pharmaceuticals, biomedical and other specialty consumer and<br />

industrial products.<br />

MCC, processed from specialty grades of renewable hardwood and softwood<br />

pulp, provides binding and disintegrant properties for dry tablets and capsules<br />

and has unique functionality that improves the texture and stability of many<br />

food products. Carrageenan and alginates, both processed from natural<br />

seaweed, are used in a wide variety of food, pharmaceutical and oral<br />

care applications. <strong>BioPolymer</strong> also supplies other specialty ingredients for<br />

solutions to our customers’ most important needs.<br />

In addition, we are developing technology platforms within biomedical<br />

markets to provide ultrapure biopolymers and application know-how for<br />

biomedical devices.<br />

<strong>FMC</strong> <strong>BioPolymer</strong> has 10 laboratories on four continents, including our newest<br />

food lab in Singapore to support our rapidly expanding Southeast Asia market.<br />

In one recent 12-month period alone, we launched 25 new food ingredient<br />

products and are steadily introducing an expanding line<br />

of health and nutrition ingredients derived<br />

from brown seaweed.<br />

double compared to 2009. Given that we are already a<br />

global innovator of these ingredients and a competitively<br />

In the food sector, we serve the texture, structure and<br />

physical stability (TSPS) food ingredients market – providing<br />

ingredients that thicken and stabilize foods, including meats,<br />

dairy, bakery and convenience foods. Our customers range<br />

from global brand leaders to regional food manufacturers.<br />

Trends that are advancing our growth include rising<br />

consumer desire for healthier foods and greater<br />

convenience, as well as increases in per capita consumption<br />

of processed foods in emerging markets. The move toward<br />

health and convenience drives the need for more functional<br />

ingredients to deliver on consumers’ expectations for desired<br />

Our chemistry is mostly unnoticed by end-consumers but is<br />

an essential component in the practical consumption<br />

of many pharmaceuticals. For <strong>FMC</strong> <strong>BioPolymer</strong>, demand<br />

for our chemistry parallels consumers’ ever-increasing health<br />

consciousness and the need for medicines to manage acute<br />

or chronic pain, particularly as average life spans continue<br />

to rise. Coupled with demand growth in rapidly developing<br />

economies, the market indicators for this sector are<br />

highly attractive.<br />

While we do not manufacture drugs, vitamins or nutritional<br />

supplements, we are a long-time leader in helping the<br />

pharmaceutical industry create and market consumable<br />

products from renewable biopolymers. We provide formulation<br />

ingredients that function as binders, disintegrants, suspending<br />

agents, and controlled-release compounds in the production of<br />

both solid and liquid pharmaceutical products.<br />

In addition, we have developed and commercialized new soft<br />

capsule technology that utilizes carrageenan. These new<br />

capsules are being used for vitamins and other supplements.<br />

And our ultrapure biopolymers have numerous biomedical<br />

applications, including tissue engineering, cell encapsulation,<br />

and medical devices.<br />

Food Ingredients<br />

We are meeting our customers’ sharply rising global product development needs through innovative ingredient<br />

solutions. As a result, we expect to more than double our total sales compared to 2009.<br />

<strong>FMC</strong> <strong>BioPolymer</strong> customers depend on the successful<br />

therapeutic performance of their drug products, so they turn<br />

to us to deliver the most reliable and broadest range of novel<br />

product uses.<br />

We also supply alginates, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC)<br />

and carrageenan into the oral care, cosmetics and health<br />

care markets. Highly refined extracts from selected seaweeds<br />

provide a wide range of alginate uses, including antireflux,<br />

dental impressions, and wound dressings. Special grades of<br />

our carrageenan extracts are used in liquid cough medicines,<br />

toothpaste and a variety of skin care products.<br />
