From a modest start in 1961, Grieg Star has grown to become
a solid and committed operator in the open hatch and
conventional bulk markets. We service major companies in
fields like forest products, metals, bulk, energy and projects
cargo – as well as other traditional bulk commodities.
We are Grieg Star
Our goal is to help our customers succeed in their business. Therefore
we ensure that we at any time have vessels that are up to the
task of transporting your cargo in a safe and efficient way. Over
the last couple of years we have finished a major new building
program that gave us ten large, state-of-the-art open hatch ships
– a group of ships we proudly call our L-class. They took the place
of older ships, which we in an environmentally sustainable way
recycled through our own recycling company, Grieg Green.
Grieg Star has about 1300 employees and a worldwide presence,
with 17 offices around the globe. They are always there
to help our customers if needed. In addition we have personnel
attending in the ports to make sure safe cargo handling, and a
big group of experienced seafarers to ensure a high quality in
our service.
Grieg Star is a part of the Grieg Group, a conglomerate of companies
with a long and proud maritime tradition. With our global
collective experience, resilience and culture, we adopt technology
and knowledge sharing to drive a change both in business and the
societies in which we operate. Our business is based on long-term
partnerships, creating value within shipping, ship broking, maritime
services & port operations, seafood, investments and finance.
The Grieg Group is a family owned group. Our structure as a
family owned business, together with the strength of our company
culture and our dedicated employees, gives us the ability to always
view our business in the long-term prospective, and be responsive
to changes in our business environment. The Group’s strong economic
structure enables us to contribute in other areas in the form
of humanitarian, social, and cultural activities.
Visions, values and ethics
The Grieg Group share common values
through all companies. For details please visit
Grieg Star has a vision: No harmful emissions to air, sea
or land. It is a tough vision to live up to, and we are not
there yet - but we strive to be better every day.
Our responsibility
We sail this world of ours every day. We see
the dolphins, the turtles, and the seagulls.
We experience the vast oceans, the crisp air,
and the amazing colours. We know what is
at stake. And we know we can’t solve all the
problems by ourselves.
But we at Grieg Star want to be a part of
the solution, and we are proactively seeking
better solutions for our industry. Through
our engagement with other shipping
companies in Norway, we have developed
a voluntary reporting system for C02-
emissions from vessels; the FRAM project.
Through this project we want to further
develop our platform for sharing best practices
on energy efficiency whilst preparing
for a future C02-reporting regime for the
shipping industry. We set our emission
goals for 2015 in 2006, and are proud to
say we will be able to reduce the energy
consumption of the fleet by far more than
the 20 % we defined in 2006.
Grieg Star is committed to the principles
of the UN Global Compact, and strives to
continuously improve our implementation
of the ten principles. Anti-corruption has
always been high on our corporate
agenda and as members of the businessled
Maritime Anti-Corruption Network,
we have joined forces to target corruption
in high-risk ports. As more and more
companies see the value in working together
to tackle corruption, our chances of making a
positive impact is also increasing.
We know that our employees are crucial if
we want to succeed in reaching our goals.
Therefore we take their health, security and
training seriously. Through our cooperation
with the World Wildlife Foundation we teach
our cadets about climate changes, CO2 footprints
etc. We offer support to them, their
families and communities if needed, e.g. after
hurricanes.
Opportunities are made not found, and we
will continue to strive towards a sustainable
business environment where we meet the
needs of the present without compromising
the ability for future generations to meet
their needs.
General purpose bulk carriers (left) have wide overhangs protruding
over the top, and wing tanks along the bottom, of the holds. Open
hatch carriers (right) have squared holds, making cargo handeling
easier, more efficient, and less costly.
To us, the open hatch design is the logical way to design a
cargo hold for unitized cargo. Even though the design is old, new
technology makes open hatch the unrivalled solution today.
The open
hatch concept
The open hatch design with gantry crane was
developed in the early sixties to handle wood pulp and
paper in the coastal trade on the North American west
coast. The unobstructed, square cargo holds with no
overhanging deck (shoebox), dehumidification systems
and specialised cranes secure accurate, quick and damage-free
load and discharge.
Star Shipping (now Grieg Star) took an early interest
in the design. Following negotiations with some of the
major pulp producers, we contracted several larger
open hatch gantry craned ships and pioneered the
deep-sea transport of pulp, lumber and plywood.
There have been many refinements to the original
design such as electrical cranes that work in pairs,
rain protection, removable tween decks, and greatly
increased crane capacity and speed. Still, 12 ship generations
later nobody has come up with a better way to
handle unitized cargoes.
The Open Hatch design is ideal for unitized cargoes
of all kinds and our contract cargoes have changed
over time to include other commodities like fluff pulp,
newsprint, kraft linerboard, as well as increasing
volumes of steel pipes, coils and projects cargoes.
To meet the new challenges we developed removable
tween decks, allowing us to safely mix commodities in
the same hold and retain the integrity of the stowage,
as well as to avoid contamination. Each deck consists
of four pontoons, and can be quickly positioned on retractable
brackets. The option of installing the decks
at different heights gives us even more flexibility to
stow complex cargoes. When idle they are stored on a
tank top, well out of the way.
9
Forest products
Wood pulp is normally shipped in bales of
around 250 kg, unitised into 6- or 8-bale units.
This used to be 90 per cent of our business, and
remains a major commodity for us.
Fluff pulp (normally shipped in rolls) is primarily
used in hygiene products, and the cleanliness
requirements are very stringent. This is a very
fast-growing commodity for us as shippers realize
that we compete effectively with containers
on outturn quality.
Other typical contract cargoes are kraft linerboard
in big rolls, as well as newsprint, plywood,
OSB* and MDF*. Various other board products
as well as cut lumber also moves in large but less
predictable volumes around the world.
10
Our open
hatch cargoes
We have major operations in transportation of forestry
cargoes both from North- and South America, servicing
markets in Asia, North Europe and the Mediterranean.
11
Project Cargoes
Our flat decks, square holds, powerful cranes, and removable
tween decks have made us a favourite among project cargo shippers.
We carry cargoes like wind mills, machinery, generators, turbines,
yachts etc. in all our trades today, and the projects business is our fastest
growing cargo segment.
The project cargo business typically involves large dimensions, heavy weights or
difficult shapes, and often unusual destinations as well. Our port captains and service
engineers thrive on the challenges involved in developing safe methods to load, stow
and discharge these pieces.
Originally handled as spot business, project cargoes in our regular trades are today often
carried under contracts. Our Gothenburg office specializes in the project business,
and all our offices welcome your inquiries.
Steel cargoes and other break bulk cargoes:
Pipes of all dimensions have always been part of our base cargoes. The open hatches
without overhangs simplify stowage and eliminate damages.
Steel coils, both hot and cold rolled, move in large volumes. Our large cranes and rain
protection let us handle these sensitive cargoes with speed and accuracy.
Steel slabs up to 40 tons each are routinely carried on our ships,
and unitized aluminium ingots and extrusion bars are major commodities
for us.
12
We are in the forefront when in comes to designing specialized
cargo handling gear, and we always have been. New challenges
demand new gear, and we like a good challenge.
Our ships and gear
Since our beginning we have spearheaded the design of
specialized cargo handling gear. We build much of our
gear in our own workshops in Rotterdam and Vancouver,
and maintain them in our own facilities in major ports.
For unitized cargo like baled pulp and aluminium we have
designed and built frames called unihooks. The first ones
had a capacity of 8 units of two tons each, while the latest
can lift 56 tons in one lift.
They feature automatic release, and on discharge they
spread the units to eliminate damages by clamps or forks.
The handling speed has improved from under 100 tons per
hour up to perhaps ten times that – or 1,000 tons per hour,
per crane.
For rolled products like kraft linerboard we developed
vacuum clamps with capacity to handle rolls over 4 tons
each. As technology improved, we have developed
vacuum clamps for safe and damage-free handling of
more porous rolls like fluting medium and fluff pulp as well.
Today we have a large supply of vacuum pads in various
diameters to handle virtually all roll sizes.
For special projects we have also built vacuum pads to fit
large diameter pipes, steel slabs etc.
Our newest vessels – the L-class – represent a quantum
leap in open hatch technology. Each vessel is equipped
with 4 super-efficient and extremely accurate fully electric
cranes with 75 m.t. capacity (at 9.9 meters outreach). With
the already well-proven removable tween decks, these
ships are perfectly suited for our present and future
cargoes.
