Village council wants to make a decision on the old community hall. Do you think it should be
torn down? I don’t. It could be used in a number of ways. I have heard youth centre, elders drop-in
and gym. My favourite (and probably the most cost effective) would be a Heritage Hall. Get rid of
the yellow metal and put up wood siding. Make it into a real hall again ... with a wood floor and
windows all around. A perfect place for town council and other mid-sized meetings. A place with a
bit of class.
Thanks to Walter Geddes, Dean Compagna, and a whole wack of
unknown photographers, for sharing some great photos. As
always, ideas, photos, or comments are always welcome. Please
share your pictures. Teslin is an interesting place ... show the world.
The old Community Hall
..is it time to say goodbye?
Teslin’s village council wants to know what to do with the old hall. A question that has been festering
for several years. The previous council first openly broached the idea of tearing it down in April
2009. They were somewhat surprised when a large group of locals came to the next meeting and
strongly opposed the idea. Now this council wants to make a decision.
First a bit of back history (with thanks to Bonar Cooley) of the old community hall. In 1967 cities,
towns, and villages all across Canada were doing something special to celebrate Canada’s onehundredth
birthday. In Teslin we built a brand new community hall. The building was funded
(somewhat under the table) by the late Bob Fleming when it became obvious that supporting grant
money would not arrive in time. Bob was repaid later in the year when the money finally came
through. In the meantime, a crew of builders that included the likes of Doug Smarch Sr., Ray
Douville, Harry Jackson, Robert Jackson, Billy Fox, Louis Fox, Walter Fox, Harry Morris, Winston
Jackson, George Sidney Sr., and many others went ahead and built a fine log hall to honour Canada’s
Centennial.
For well over twenty years the old community hall was used for weddings, funerals, dances, turkey
shoots, court, movie nights, political rallies, New Year’s Eve parties, bonspiels, receptions, crib
tournaments, and most every major event in the life of small village.
It has been altered over the years ... a kitchen and a bar were added during the 70s ... another
addition in the 80s was made for the Library. Sometime in the 90s someone got a deal on yellow
metal siding and the whole building was retrofitted to look like all the other yellow metal VOT
buildings. The post office and later the bank moved in to make the old hall our community centre.
Some five - six years ago the tenants complained that the building too old and smelled. The bank,
post office, and library all moved out. It has sat empty ever since.
According to Wes Wirth, YTG environmental services have been in and apparently the building is
not a health risk. Though the basement can become rather dank.
So, that’s the short history.
Village council wants to know what you think? As mentioned ... right now it sits empty ... unheated
and without power. Should it come down or is there still a role for our old hall? Contact Shawna
Anderson at the village office (390-2530) or drop her an email at Shawna.anderson@teslin.ca. Mayor
and council want to make a decision soon.
New Lots on the Saw Mill Road
A TTC/YTG joint land development project on the Sawmill Road will likely begin this summer.
The most recent map (distributed on May 2011) shows some 49 half hectare lots east of the
current built up area on the Sawmill Road. Twenty-five lots, all on the Nisutlin Bay side, will be on
TTC land. The remaining twenty-four are on YTG land. The entire subdivision will be within the
village boundaries. All lots will be for lease only. According to the project manager they will be
available for 30 year leases with an automatic extension for another 30. Information (or concerns)
regarding the development should be directed to Blanche Warrington at TTC 390-2532 (ext. 424)
or YTG’s project manager Rob Roycroft at robroycroft@shaw.ca. Mr Roycroft is based in
George Johnston Museum Update
Sharron Chatterton
The George Johnston Museum is undergoing a facelift … well really a “bottom lift” as work begins this summer
on stabilizing the foundation and leveling the floors, repairing exterior siding, tamping down that roof in spots,
sucking in the buckling ground panels, laying gravel and a cement pad to stabilize the oil tank and installing
new front glass doors and fresh new carpets. This will further beautify and generally dry out and warm up our
chilly but gorgeous little museum.
It is also no longer so ‘little’. We have added another 450 square feet of unusual exhibits in the brand new old
1941 Aeradio Range Navigation Building, and monster cabinetry to bring our startling Tlingit head dresses, clan
shirt, lynx paw blankets, beadwork, and other rarities out of that solitary confinement called Storage. Things
will be a movin’ in the main museum.
The highway will be lit up with two new signs. The Yukon Highway’s department ‘sign guys’ said, “ Wow ….
there’s nothing like that on the highways !” Which is exactly what we’d hoped. We want that traffic to do a
‘double-take’ and skid to a halt. Look for a large red and blue splash, an artifact that leaps off the panel and
minimal words. We went with the new vinyl rolls through PR Services and praise their speed and designer
response to our demands.
Staff this year includes our favourite Come-Back member Rita Davie and new member Kelsey Hassard. We’ll
work their socks off. As usual, we’ll need an occasional casual reception person too.
The town will be in festivities mood on June 30th when we welcome a glittering Official Party to cut the ribbon
on the exhibit, then repare to the Teslin Rec-plex for a lavish (one day early) Traditional Dominion Day Silver
Tea. Wear what will honour your Teslin Tlingit family members who lived through 1940-55 wartime period.
You are invited, so bring your Elders. They will love the photos and artifacts.
The George Johnston Museum now has
another wonderful example of Mabel
Johnston’s bead and leather work.
Come to the GJM and check it out!
