<strong>Village</strong> council wants to make a decision on the old community hall. Do you think it should be<br />
torn down? I don’t. It could be used in a number <strong>of</strong> ways. I have heard youth centre, elders drop-in<br />
and gym. My favourite (and probably the most cost effective) would be a Heritage Hall. Get rid <strong>of</strong><br />
the yellow metal and put up wood siding. Make it into a real hall again ... with a wood floor and<br />
windows all around. A perfect place for town council and other mid-sized meetings. A place with a<br />
bit <strong>of</strong> class.<br />

<strong>The</strong> old Community Hall<br />
..is it time to say goodbye?<br />
<strong>Teslin</strong>’s village council wants to know what to do with the old hall. A question that has been festering<br />
for several years. <strong>The</strong> previous council first openly broached the idea <strong>of</strong> tearing it down in April<br />
2009. <strong>The</strong>y were somewhat surprised when a large group <strong>of</strong> locals came to the next meeting and<br />
strongly opposed the idea. <strong>No</strong>w this council wants to make a decision.<br />
First a bit <strong>of</strong> back history (with thanks to Bonar Cooley) <strong>of</strong> the old community hall. In 1967 cities,<br />
towns, and villages all across Canada were doing something special to celebrate Canada’s onehundredth<br />
birthday. In <strong>Teslin</strong> we built a brand new community hall. <strong>The</strong> building was funded<br />
(somewhat under the table) by the late Bob Fleming when it became obvious that supporting grant<br />
money would not arrive in time. Bob was repaid later in the year when the money finally came<br />
through. In the meantime, a crew <strong>of</strong> builders that included the likes <strong>of</strong> Doug Smarch Sr., Ray<br />
Douville, Harry Jackson, Robert Jackson, Billy Fox, Louis Fox, Walter Fox, Harry Morris, Winston<br />
Jackson, George Sidney Sr., and many others went ahead and built a fine log hall to honour Canada’s<br />
Centennial.<br />
For well over twenty years the old community hall was used for weddings, funerals, dances, turkey<br />
shoots, court, movie nights, political rallies, New Year’s Eve parties, bonspiels, receptions, crib<br />
tournaments, and most every major event in the life <strong>of</strong> small village.<br />
It has been altered over the years ... a kitchen and a bar were added during the 70s ... another<br />
addition in the 80s was made for the Library. Sometime in the 90s someone got a deal on yellow<br />
metal siding and the whole building was retr<strong>of</strong>itted to look like all the other yellow metal VOT<br />
buildings. <strong>The</strong> post <strong>of</strong>fice and later the bank moved in to make the old hall our community centre.<br />
Some five - six years ago the tenants complained that the building too old and smelled. <strong>The</strong> bank,<br />
post <strong>of</strong>fice, and library all moved out. It has sat empty ever since.<br />
According to Wes Wirth, YTG environmental services have been in and apparently the building is<br />
not a health risk. Though the basement can become rather dank.<br />
So, that’s the short history.<br />
<strong>Village</strong> council wants to know what you think? As mentioned ... right now it sits empty ... unheated<br />
and without power. Should it come down or is there still a role for our old hall? Contact Shawna<br />

New Lots on the Saw Mill Road<br />
A TTC/YTG joint land development project on the Sawmill Road will likely begin this summer.<br />
<strong>The</strong> most recent map (distributed on May 2011) shows some 49 half hectare lots east <strong>of</strong> the<br />
current built up area on the Sawmill Road. Twenty-five lots, all on the Nisutlin Bay side, will be on<br />
TTC land. <strong>The</strong> remaining twenty-four are on YTG land. <strong>The</strong> entire subdivision will be within the<br />
village boundaries. All lots will be for lease only. According to the project manager they will be<br />
available for 30 year leases with an automatic extension for another 30. Information (or concerns)<br />
regarding the development should be directed to Blanche Warrington at TTC 390-2532 (ext. 424)<br />

Foreman’s Report for April<br />
Landfill<br />
- We are still sending one load per week to town in the transfer bin.<br />
- <strong>The</strong> spring clean up at the landfill will be starting soon.<br />
- With the coming <strong>of</strong> spring the compost area has seen a little more<br />
use, we hope that it still gains in popularity.<br />
- Spring cleanup is underway the kids from school with the RCMP are<br />
cleaning the streets in May anyone wanting to help clean their town is welcome to come and help.<br />
- With the coming <strong>of</strong> spring the recycle center has been seeing more bottles, we would just like to remind everyone<br />
that the bottles need to be sorted and we can assist them with counting also as Sunday appears to be the busiest for<br />
returns your patience in assisting the attendant would be appreciated..<br />
Lagoon and Force Main<br />
- <strong>The</strong> assessment <strong>of</strong> the lagoon has yet to start but we hope to be under way soon.<br />
- <strong>The</strong> gravity feed system as well as the forced main has been working very well, we will be doing manhole<br />
flushing and asset assessment to identify and mark a few problem areas.<br />
Arena & Curling Rink<br />
- <strong>The</strong> ice plant has been shut down for the season.<br />
Water Quality / Water Deliver<br />
- All is good no problems or concerns<br />
Other Activities<br />
- We are starting the ground application for insect control in mid May but we will not be doing the helicopter<br />
application as we have done in the past. If you have any questions about the program you can reach me at the<br />
<strong>Village</strong> Office.<br />
- We hope to have the dock in by mid to late May. Road repair season is now here so we will be sweeping and<br />
patching from now to late summer, we would like to ask all drivers to watch for village employees and to slow<br />
down in work areas.<br />

Community Clean-Up with the Mounties<br />

May 11 saw the <strong>Teslin</strong> RCMP host a community clean up with<br />
<strong>Teslin</strong> school. Corporal Shaun Pike stated that he was impressed<br />
with the hard work (and bags <strong>of</strong> garbage brought in by) our local<br />
school students. <strong>The</strong> RCMP would like to express his thanks to<br />
the <strong>Village</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Teslin</strong>, Recreation Society, Nisutlin Trading <strong>Post</strong>, the<br />
adult volunteers, and especially the students at <strong>Teslin</strong> School in<br />

In Memoriam<br />
<strong>The</strong> family <strong>of</strong> Robert R. Grant sadly announce his passing<br />
on May 15 2011 in Kamloops B.C. Robert Grant was a<br />
veteran <strong>of</strong> the Second World War and the Korea conflict.<br />
During the early 1960s, Mr Grant lived in <strong>Teslin</strong> and<br />
operated Yukon Airways at the site <strong>of</strong> our community<br />
marina. Robert Grant is survived by his son Mike (<strong>Teslin</strong>);<br />
Patty (Idaho); <strong>The</strong>resa (Kamloops) Maria (Vancouver); as<br />
well as many grandchildren and great-grand children.<br />

George Johnston Museum Update<br />
Sharron Chatterton<br />
<strong>The</strong> George Johnston Museum is undergoing a facelift … well really a “bottom lift” as work begins this summer<br />
on stabilizing the foundation and leveling the floors, repairing exterior siding, tamping down that ro<strong>of</strong> in spots,<br />
sucking in the buckling ground panels, laying gravel and a cement pad to stabilize the oil tank and installing<br />
new front glass doors and fresh new carpets. This will further beautify and generally dry out and warm up our<br />
chilly but gorgeous little museum.<br />
It is also no longer so ‘little’. We have added another 450 square feet <strong>of</strong> unusual exhibits in the brand new old<br />
1941 Aeradio Range Navigation Building, and monster cabinetry to bring our startling Tlingit head dresses, clan<br />
shirt, lynx paw blankets, beadwork, and other rarities out <strong>of</strong> that solitary confinement called Storage. Things<br />
will be a movin’ in the main museum.<br />
<strong>The</strong> highway will be lit up with two new signs. <strong>The</strong> Yukon Highway’s department ‘sign guys’ said, “ Wow ….<br />
there’s nothing like that on the highways !” Which is exactly what we’d hoped. We want that traffic to do a<br />
‘double-take’ and skid to a halt. Look for a large red and blue splash, an artifact that leaps <strong>of</strong>f the panel and<br />
minimal words. We went with the new vinyl rolls through PR Services and praise their speed and designer<br />
response to our demands.<br />
Staff this year includes our favourite Come-Back member Rita Davie and new member Kelsey Hassard. We’ll<br />
work their socks <strong>of</strong>f. As usual, we’ll need an occasional casual reception person too.<br />
<strong>The</strong> town will be in festivities mood on June 30th when we welcome a glittering Official Party to cut the ribbon<br />
on the exhibit, then repare to the <strong>Teslin</strong> Rec-plex for a lavish (one day early) Traditional Dominion Day Silver<br />
Tea. Wear what will honour your <strong>Teslin</strong> Tlingit family members who lived through 1940-55 wartime period.<br />
You are invited, so bring your Elders. <strong>The</strong>y will love the photos and artifacts.<br />
<strong>The</strong> George Johnston Museum now has<br />
another wonderful example <strong>of</strong> Mabel<br />
Johnston’s bead and leather work.<br />

KIDS - 7 to 17 - Go Flying - JUNE 30, 2011<br />
Is your child Interested in AIRPLANES ?<br />
<strong>The</strong> members <strong>of</strong> the Yukon Chapter <strong>of</strong> the Canadian Owners & Pilots Association,<br />
(Flight Number 106), are willing to assist your Airport Event by flying a LIMITED<br />
number <strong>of</strong> kids on June 30, 2011 between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, at the <strong>Teslin</strong><br />
Airport.<br />
Under the “COPA FOR KIDS” program, Our Members have volunteered their aircraft,<br />
their time, and fuel to carry as many Kids as possible between the ages <strong>of</strong> 7 to 17 who<br />
have permission forms signed by their parents.<br />
Our objective is to stimulate interest in aviation and demonstrate the importance <strong>of</strong> the<br />
airports and use <strong>of</strong> aircraft in Yukon. Kids will meet the pilots, examine different types <strong>of</strong><br />
light aircraft, learn about flying, and most <strong>of</strong> them will get a chance to actually fly.<br />
Certificates are provided following thier experience.<br />

<strong>The</strong> parents permission form is included in the brochure available at;<br />

<strong>The</strong> forms must be signed by the legal guardian and presented to the pilot before the<br />
flight is allowed.<br />
