FESTIVAL BEERS Festival Beers are brewed especially for GABS. Some are brewed in a traditional style, perhaps with a twist, while others are highly creative. Prices are listed for 300ml Festival Glass fills but all 85ml tasters are 1 token. Entries may be subject to change. To save yourself lining up a couple of times at different sections try to pick a few beers from the same section rather than one at a time. 5. Best to start with easier drinking beers before moving onto moderately challenging and then more challenging flavoured beers. Certainly inventive. EASIER DRINKING Style: Saison Character: Fruity/Spicy ABV: 6% Festival Glass: 3 tokens 4 PINES BREWING COMPANY NSW 3 Snickers Brewed with chocolate, salted caramel and peanut extract, this tribute beer means you can “Get Some Nuts!” without getting shouted at by Mr T in a Sherman tank. Your taste buds will love the fluffy nitro finish while your gums will appreciate not having to pick out peanut shards afterwards. EASIER DRINKING Style: Brown Ale (UK) Character: Malty ABV: 6% Festival Glass: 3 tokens 7 CENT BREWERY VIC 4 Beer Is So Over These guys totally liked craft beer before it was cool, they eat super-foods and use only organic lama oil for their beards. So this is the ultimate hipster beer - made with French lentils, quinoa, chia seeds, kale, goji berries and loads of fresh blueberries. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Fruit Beer Character: Fruity/Spicy ABV: 5.5% Festival Glass: 3 tokens 8 WIRED BREWING New Zealand 5 Hippy Berliner 8 Wired has been listed in Ratebeer.com’s '100 Best Brewers in the World' for the past three years. This Berliner Weisse was brewed with a modest amount of NZ hops then dry hopped relatively heavily with pungent American hops. Tart, refreshing and very juicy. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Berliner Weisse Character: Tart/Funky ABV: 4% Festival Glass: 3 tokens AIBA VIC 6 Girt by Three Created by 2014 AIBA Champions CUB, Thunder Road and 3 Ravens, this Australian Pale Ale has old and new world influences including English yeast and malt, Pride of Ringwood hops and aged beer the breweries blended in. New world influences include assertive use of Australian aroma hops. MORE CHALLENGING Style: Pale Ale (Australian) Character: Hoppy ABV: 10% Festival Glass: 4 tokens AKASHA BREWING COMPANY NSW 7 Fire Within This Imperial Amber Ale is bursting at the seams with massive dank hoppiness but is balanced with a complex malt backbone. Its beautiful ochre coloured appearance, roasted malt aromas and rich deep textured flavours are sure to “Awaken the Soul”. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Amber Ale (USA) Character: Hoppy ABV: 8.5% Festival Glass: 4 tokens ALL INN BREWING CO QLD 8 Relax Bro American Barleywines tend to have a greater emphasis on hop bitterness, flavour and aroma than English Barleywines, and often feature American hops. This one is made with 25% peated malt, paprika and cayenne pepper. MORE CHALLENGING Style: Barleywine (USA) Character: Hoppy ABV: 10% Festival Glass: 4 tokens AUSTRALIAN BEER CO NSW 9 Yenda Belgian Double Abbey Dubbels are deep reddish, moderately strong, malty and complex Belgian ales. This one has been infused with cardamom, providing a well balanced beer full of sweet malt and hoppy flavour. It's like a glass of Christmas Pudding. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Belgian Dubbel Character: Malty ABV: 6.5% Festival Glass: 3 tokens AUSTRALIAN BREWERY NSW 10 Mad Mad Madras Why order a beer and a curry when you can have both in the same glass? A dark, rich and chewy beer made with basmati rice and flavoured with coriander, cumin, cardamon and ginger. It is 'bittered' with tamarind and finished with a sprinkling of garam masala. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Specialty Beer Character: Fruity/Spicy ABV: 6.9% Festival Glass: 3 tokens BACCHUS BREWING CO QLD 11 Atomic Lemon, Lime & Bitters A fairly intense sour ale made with lemons, limes and blood oranges and then fermented with Lactobacillius to create the flavour of the iconic Aussie drink lemon, lime and bitters. BAIRD BREWING Japan 12 Sour Puss A brisk and tart lemon-fruited India Pale Ale (IPA). Lemon is added in two forms: peel shavings and freshly squeezed juice. The hop varieties (Sorachi Ace, Nelson Sauvin and Taurus) add to the citrus punch. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Specialty IPA Character: Fruity/Spicy ABV: 7% Festival Glass: 4 tokens BAROSSA VALLEY BREWING SA 13 Christmas Pudding Porter Christmas puddings, glacé fruits, cherries, sultanas and blackcurrants have all been added to this fascinating beer. Nutmeg, clove and cinnamon spices are later dropped in too before the beer is aged in brandy barrels for a month. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Robust Porter Character: Fruity/Spicy ABV: 6.5% Festival Glass: 3 tokens BEARD AND BRAU 14 FARMHOUSE BREWERY QLD Batlow n’ Brau – Bon Pommes A traditional French style farmhouse ale brewed on a farm in Tamborine with Batlow apples grown in the Snowy Mountains. A robust malt base and floral hops provide an elegant foundation for cloudy apple aromatics and hybrid yeast strains. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Bière de Garde Character: Fruity/Spicy ABV: 7% Festival Glass: 4 tokens BEAVERTOWN United Kingdom 15 Abrigot Jammed Sour Belgian ale with apricot; fermented with a lovely Belgian Abbey yeast and hopped liberally with German and UK varieties. Tart, resinous, and lots of stone fruit. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Belgian Specialty Ale Character: Tart/Funky ABV: 5.5% Festival Glass: 3 tokens BEHEMOTH BREWING CO New Zealand 16 Bogan’s Breakfast All a growing bogan needs first thing in the morning. This 'Milk Brown Ale' is sweet and velvety with roasted coffee flavours and hints of bourbon. So chuck on your best Acca Dacca tee, make sure your mullet is looking good and get one down ya, mate. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Brown Ale (USA) Character: Malty ABV: 5.2% Festival Glass: 3 tokens BENTSPOKE BREWERY ACT 17 Black ‘n sour The legendary Canberra brewer behind this ale likes to keep things mysterious but we can say that it will be dark, roasty, leathery, tart... and probably awesome. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Specialty Beer Character: Tart/Funky ABV: 5% Festival Glass: 3 tokens BIG SHED BREWING SA 18 Golden Stout Time This beer is a tribute to the classic Golden Gaytime ice cream. It was brewed with cacao nibs, rice and specialty grain for that honey aroma then lactose for sweetness. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Sweet Stout Character: Roasty ABV: 6% Festival Glass: 3 tokens BIRBECKS BREWING SA 19 So It Ends All the bitterness of a divorce, more hops than a kangaroo convention and a lager because everyone wants a lager...so it ends. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Imperial Pilsner Character: Hoppy ABV: 7% Festival Glass: 4 tokens BIRRA DEL BORGO Italy 20 Mood Indigo Bières de Garde (“beer for keeping”) are originally French farmhouse ales brewed in spring for consumption in warmer weather. They are rounder, richer, sweeter, malt-focused, often with a 'cellar' character and lacking the spicing and tartness of a Saison. This one includes Syrah grape must, ginger, lemongrass and desert limes. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Bière de Garde Character: Malty ABV: 5.5% Festival Glass: 3 tokens CONTAINER A SECTION 2 BLACK HEART BREWERY VIC 21 Terry! Tap it, Smash it, Love it. It’s Terry! This choc orange Porter is all yours. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Porter Character: Roasty ABV: 6.2% Festival Glass: 3 tokens BLACK HOPS BREWING QLD 22 Kill Patrick An Oyster Stout with a twist! Brewed with fresh oysters, smoked barley and spiced with tamarind, molasses, ginger and clove. It has subtle characteristics of the sea with a hint of bacon and Worcestershire sauce. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Dry Stout Character: Roasty ABV: 6% Festival Glass: 3 tokens BLACKHORSE BREWHOUSE NSW 23 Finger Lime Ale This beer is an extended version of Blackhorse’s Aussie Pale Ale and loaded up with native Australian finger limes to give a zesty, citrus finish. EASIER DRINKING Style: Pale Ale (Australian) Character: Hoppy ABV: 4.7% Festival Glass: 3 tokens BOATROCKER BREWING CO VIC 24 I Ain’t Afraid No Gose This beer from a winemaker and a couple of brewers is based on a Leipziger Gose. Coriander, Murray River sea salt and mixed fermentation via Lactobacillus cultures and more traditional Saccharomyces fermentation ensure this beer IS refreshment. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Historical Character: Tart/Funky ABV: 4% Festival Glass: 3 tokens BOOTLEG BREWERY WA 25 Chai Milk Stout Milk Stouts contain lactose, a sugar derived from milk which adds sweetness, body, and calories to the finished beer. In the past, Milk Stout was claimed to be nutritious and given to nursing mothers along with other Stouts, such as Guinness. Try this one infused with chai. MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Sweet Stout Character: Roasty ABV: 5.5% Festival Glass: 3 tokens BREWCULT VIC 26 Milk and Two Sugars For many people, the day can’t start without a coffee. “Mine’s a standard,” you say. “Sure. Milk and Two Sugars it is then”. Brewed with colddrip coffee and vanilla beans, this will give you a caffeine and calorie hit at the same time! MODERATELY CHALLENGING Style: Sweet Stout Character: Roasty ABV: 8% Festival Glass: 4 tokens BRIDGE ROAD BREWERS VIC 27 Creek Unlike conventional beer, which is fermented by carefully cultivated yeast, Lambic is traditionally exposed to wild yeasts and bacteria, which give the beer its distinctive flavour. This cherry Lambic was brewed using locally grown Beechworth cherries and then aged in French Cognac barrels. MORE CHALLENGING Style: Lambic Character: Tart/Funky ABV: 4.5% Festival Glass: 3 tokens BRIGHT BREWERY VIC 28 Lord Helmet Schwartz “Shit! I hate it when I get my Schwartz twisted! Look, all that you need to know is that Lord Helmet Schwartz is your father’s brother’s nephew’s cousin’s former roommate. Dark and crisp, with parody ingredients from outer space, you can bet that it gives great helmet.” Um, ok.
