Land of Legends and Writers Poulnabrone Dolman The boundless verdant hills and valleys of Ireland have stolen the heart of many a traveler. With luck, you too will be enamored. Listen to the sound of crashing waves at the Cliffs of Moher or duck into a pub in Ennis to mingle with locals. Wander bucolic villages and bustling cities alike, discovering for yourself the wit, wisdom and magic of the legendary Emerald Isle. Day One Depart for Shannon, Ireland, aboard scheduled jet service. A Day Two Ennis SHANNON/ENNIS Upon arrival in Shannon, transfer A to Ennis and the Old Ground Hotel. In the evening, join fellow travelers for a Welcome Reception and Dinner. Day Three ENNIS D B/L Local Focus: The History of Ireland & County Clare. Delve into the history of Éire, focusing on County Clare, one of the most captivating areas of Ireland. The Celts, Romans, Vikings, Anglo-Normans and British have all left their mark on Ireland and County Clare. Trace the epic events staged in this corner of the storied Emerald Isle. Excursion: Coole Park. Once home to Lady Gregory, a lifelong friend of W.B. Yeats, Ennis Coole Park is a sprawling expanse of seven wooded areas, peaceful trails and a walled garden. Its idyllic atmosphere inspired much of Yeats’ poetry. Although the house no longer stands, one important highlight does remain — the copper beech that has been etched with the initials of Yeats and many other Irish notables. Local Flavor: Enjoy lunch in the tea rooms of Coole Park. Excursion: Craggaunowen. At the Craggaunowen Project, glimpse into a chronology of recreated Irish settlements, including a unique crannóg, or lake dwelling. See the replica of St. Brendan’s leather boat that was used by Tim Severin in 1976 to re-enact the monk’s sixth-century Atlantic crossing. Local Focus: Irish Seanchai. Irish storytelling, or seanchai, is one of Ireland’s oldest and beloved traditions. This evening, enjoy the riveting tales of
Killarney Lakes Eddie Lenihan, Ireland’s most famous storyteller. Day Four ENNIS W.B. Yeats statue B/L/D Excursion: The Burren and The Cliffs of Moher. After a presentation at the Burren Center, enjoy a drive through this mystical landscape, an ancient land that’s a source of wonder for all who visit. Stop to marvel at the ancient tomb, Poulnabrone Dolman, which has been standing since the Neolithic era (4,000-3,000 B.C.). Then, venture to the majestic Cliffs at Moher for one of the most breathtaking views in all of Ireland. Local Focus: Irish Music and Dance. Prepare for a lively evening during an exclusive performance. Young musicians and dancers from a local school will entertain you with traditional music and dance, including the Irish step dance, an old style of dance that’s still popular in Ireland. Day Five KILLARNEY Killarney Today, depart for Killarney. Excursion: Muckross House. Step back in time at one of Ireland’s most-famous homes, Muckross House, a stately, ivy-covered mansion built in 1834 for a politician and his artist wife. Surrounded by lush formal gardens and traditional farms, the house has over 65 rooms, each opulently furnished in Victorian-era décor. Independent Exploration: After a brief overview of Killarney, the afternoon is yours to explore at your leisure whether you’d like to sightsee or browse through shops for souvenirs. B Blarney Castle Continue to the Malton Hotel and spend the remainder of your day at leisure. Day Six KILLARNEY B/L Excursion: The Ring of Kerry. Travel along the Ring of Kerry, one of the most scenic coastal routes in the world, with serene beaches, ancient monasteries and archaeological wonders at each passing turn. Along the way, you’ll meet Brendan Ferris, a local shepherd who will demonstrate the art of shepherding sheep. See the charming coastal villages of Caherdaniel and Sneem before stopping at Ladies’ View for a panoramic view of the Killarney Valley and its lakes. Local Flavor: Enjoy a relaxing lunch in Waterville, a picturesque village overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Day Seven KILLARNEY Local Focus: Finding Your Irish Roots. If you boast some Irish heritage in your genes, start the process of uncovering your Irish ancestry during this informative lecture that B
