mating, rest, or even food <strong>and</strong> drink—until it either collapses from<br />

fatigue or dies, is not exactly one that comm<strong>and</strong>s a “reverential mode<br />

of response” or an “upward-looking type of the pro attitude.” If we<br />

picture a human being in place of the rat, we would have to say that<br />

it is one Un-Dignified human, or at any rate a human engaged in a<br />

very Un-Dignified activity.*<br />

Would life in such an Un-Dignified state (assuming for the sake<br />

of argument that the pleasure was indefinitely sustainable <strong>and</strong> ignoring<br />

any wider effects on society) be preferable to life as we know it?<br />

Clearly, that depends on the quality of the life that we know. Given<br />

a sufficiently bleak alternative, intracranial electrical stimulation<br />

certainly seems much preferable; for example, for patients who are<br />

slowly dying in unbearable cancer pain <strong>and</strong> for whom other methods<br />

of palliation are ineffective. † It is even possible that for such patients,<br />

wire-heading <strong>and</strong> similar interventions increase their <strong>Dignity</strong> as a<br />

Quality (not to mention other components of their well-being). 17<br />

Some estimable English doctors were once in the habit of administering<br />

to cancer patients in their last throes an elixir known as the<br />

Brompton cocktail, a mixture of cocaine, heroin <strong>and</strong> alcohol:<br />

Drawing life to a close with a transcendentally orgasmic bang,<br />

<strong>and</strong> not a pathetic <strong>and</strong> god-forsaken whimper, can turn dying<br />

into the culmination of one’s existence rather than its present<br />

messy <strong>and</strong> protracted anti-climax…. One is conceived in<br />

pleasure. One may reasonably hope to die in it. 18<br />

Bowing out in such a manner would not only be a lot more fun, it<br />

seems, but also more dignified than the alternative.<br />

But suppose the comparison case is not unbearable agony but a<br />

typical situation from an average person’s life. Then becoming like<br />
