Staff Farewell ~ Congratulations to all of the Waverly-Shell Rock staff who
were honored at the Retirement Open House on May 8th. A very special
congratulations and thank you goes to the Carey Staff members.
Gayle Stensland Mrs. Stensland has served as a special education teacher in W-SR
for 35 years and will be retiring at the end of this school year! She has served many
children in her years in WSR, and has fostered progress in reading, math, and
writing. She is looking forward to spending time with her family! Good luck in all your
future adventures, Mrs. Stensland!
Beth Busch: Mrs. Busch has been the media associate at Carey School for 13 years,
and has also greeted students in the morning as the breakfast server. She is looking
forward to spending time with her children and grandchildren in retirement. We want to
wish you all the best, Mrs. Busch!
Jane Cline: A sad but sweet farewell also goes out to Mrs.Cline who has served as a
Kindergarten teacher at Carey for the past seven years. She will be moving to
Nebraska with her family. Although we will miss her very much, we wish Jane and her
family all the best as they take this next big step!
And a transfer to announce: Currently, Mrs. Foreman teaches our 3 rd section of
kindergarten at Carey. She will be transferring to the kindergarten position that was
vacated by Mrs. Cline, so she will remain in kindergarten next year. We will have two
sections of kindergarten at Carey next year. Congratulations, Mrs. Foreman!
Since we have 3 sections of kindergarten this year, we will have 3 sections of
1 st grade for next year. Due to Mrs. Foreman’s transfer to kindergarten, we are
in the process of hiring a third First Grade teacher for the 2013-14 school year.
Carey Family Picnic . . .
There will be an all-school family picnic on the Carey
Playground, Tuesday, May 21 st from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Mark
your calendars ~ details coming soon!
Bowling . . .
A reminder that students in grades K – 4 th will go bowling with
their class on Friday, May 24 th .
Field Day . . .
All K-4 th grade students will participate in the Carey Field Day
sponsored by the physical education department on Monday,
May 28 th , from 1:00—3:00 p.m.
Last Day of School . . .
Tuesday, June 3rd will be the last day of school for the
Carey Elementary Students. There will be an Early
Dismissal at 12:40 p.m.
Report Cards . . .
Report cards will be mailed home on June 4 th .

Lunch and Milk Accounts:
The Waverly-Shell Rock food service staff is
requesting that all lunch and milk accounts
are paid in full by Wednesday, May 23rd. Any
positive balance will remain in the account to be
used for next year.
Thank you for your assistance!
Fall Registration . . .
Registration options and instructions will be sent to you
through email or US Mail this Spring and in July—more
information will follow! We will also hold the traditional face
-to-face registration for those families who choose to come
in to register. Fall registration for all Waverly-Shell Rock
students will be Monday, August 5 th from 11:00 – 6:00
p.m. at the Waverly-Shell Rock Middle School Cafeteria.
Open House . . .
We will be hosting an Open House on Monday, August
19th from 2:00-3:00 p.m., the day before school starts.
All K-4 th grade students and their families may come to
school and bring their supplies, see the classroom, and
meet the teacher.
First Day of School . . .
The first day of school for the 2013-2014 school year will
be Tuesday, August 20, 2013! There will be an Early
Dismissal at 2:00 p.m. for In-Take Conferences!
In-Take Conferences will be from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m.
Report Cards:
This year, we will be mailing report cards home on
June 4th . This will ensure that the report card will arrive
safely and intact at your home, and that you, as the parent,
will have the opportunity to read the report card and go
over it with your child. Along with the report card, your
child’s teacher for next year will be identified, and a copy of
the supply list from your child’s upcoming teacher will be
included. If you are out and about shopping this summer,
you can pick up supplies and not have to wait until August
when the supply aisles are crowded!
In-Take Conferences . . .
Waverly-Shell Rock will be starting something new as we
begin the 2013-14 school year. During the first week of
school, we will hold Intake Conferences with parents. This
is like a Parent/Teacher Conferences that will be a 20 minute
scheduled conference with the goal of having parents
share information about their child and to have the opportunity
to visit with your child’s teacher and learn about the
classroom as the new school year is beginning. There will
be early dismissals held during the first week of school to
accommodate the conferences ~ more details will be sent
to families regarding conference sign-up and information
sharing this summer. The schedule for the first week of
school follows:

Thank you for our Volunteers and Successful Fundraising:
Fundraising: We are extremely pleased and grateful for the outstanding fundraising results we
have had this year. Due to the hard work of the Parent Group and the generous donations and
participation of all of our Carey families, we have had a very successful year. The Parent Group
supported all field trips, books for the media center, conference child care, books for the holidays,
muffins, donuts, popcorn, and other purchases for instructional materials for our students.
We would like to thank all of our Carey families
for your generous contributions to our school
during the past year. Your donations of time
and money are greatly appreciated. The number
of hours that parents and supporters of our
school volunteer truly make a difference in the
education of our students. We look forward to
working together, again, next year!
