At home, in the pasture, when you are saddling up or mounting up, when the shoer/trimmer comes, in
the trailer, in camp, on the trail...share the one thing you really wish your horse knew how to do.
Karen Grove Trimmer I wish I could teach my horse to
come running back to me when I whistle. If he would do
that, it would upgrade my unplanned dismount to a spectacular
display of loyalty and earn a round of applause.

and feed themselves and shut the barn door when done
and not make a mess especially when its cold and rainy

BuckLee (now since passed) had
a habit of getting out of his pasture
by my sister’s house. Well,
one day he decided to open her
screen door and make himself at
home in her kitchen. My sister about
fainted when she heard a noise in
the kitchen and found him standing
there looking at her. She got used
to it. And he never made a mess.

Patricia Berning My horse JJ has a habit of putting his
nose into my trailer when the door is open and reaches
his neck clear over to the other side through the other
door, sniffing and mouthing everything as he goes. Quite
often he thinks whatever is over there is SO compelling he
has to put his feet into the trailer and try to go though the
tack area. Of course, he does not fit into the tack area,
so I have to get him to back out before he gets stuck. But
every time he gets in trouble for doing that, he does it
again the next time he has an opportunity. So JJ, “Why
in the world would you do that?”
Maryjane Poulin My Spotted Saddle Horse (named Spot)
likes to pick up things. One day in the arena he picked up
one of the dog’s rubber balls and bit down. SQUEAK!! He
took off with ball in mouth and kept squeaking it and scaring
himself even more. Spot, drop it, I tell him! Finally he
does drop it and immediately calms down. Looks at me like
it was my fault. Spot, “Why in the world did you do that?”
Sarah Kramer I have a 39-inch mini
named Alice that I drive, she is quite a
piece of work. Where I board there is a
small lake where I take the horses swimming.
When I took my mini out for her
first swim, she stood stock still at the edge
of the lake and then BOLTED out into
the water. It was just like the cartoons
from when I was a child—as soon as she
stopped moving she was suspended over
the water for a second and then dropped
in and was completely submerged! She
flew back to shore, eyes bugged out,
sputtering and shaking. Alice, “Why
in the world did you do that?!?”
Gray Cheryl I was riding on the beach
when all of a sudden Sancho makes up
his mind that he wants to run and then
stop on a dime. And of course, I go head
over heels. What in the world made
you do that? Of course the reply would
be I thought we were having fun ! LOL

“What was the most peaceful moment you remember
with your horse, on the trail, in camp or at home?”
Robin Vose McGrath Riding down to the pond listening
to the birds and chipmunks with a lovely breeze blowing
and the water trickling. The smell of fresh air that only
Vermont can provide. I was an awkward, often-lonely
teen from a challenging family situation, so my first horse,
Amarillo, was my best friend and therapist. We shared so
many exciting and peaceful adventures, but my favorite
was the evening he and I went out for a moonlight ride.
Only a few miles from home, we flushed some deer from
a patch of trees and brush, and they only went a few feet
and gaped at us so inquisitively. Then I noticed a screech
owl above me on a branch, and another trilled from closeby.
On our way back from our ride, Amarillo stopped
suddenly, and I was thrilled to see a mommy skunk leading
her babies in a line...right in front of us! All in all, this
was the most magical evening of my life, full of God’s
creatures and the best horse I could have dreamed of!
Shelby Murdock When I sat on my Mustang watching
the sunset go down on a perfect summer night.
After him being wild and unruly for months, it was
the greatest feeling to be able to just sit there,
bareback, with both of us calm and relaxed.
Audrey Malloy Riding my Little Black TWH alone at a local
state park. It was one of those gorgeous, perfect autumn
days with temperatures in the mid-sixties, no bugs,
dry trail, deep blue cloudless sky and the leaves were
in full “fall color.” It was like riding through a cathedral
with the sun shining through stained glass windows all
around, but no sound except for my horse’s swift four-beat
gait and a few birds singing. We wove back and forth
through the trees, following the trail, just surrounded by
all the color. It just doesn’t get much better than that.
Susan M Hathaway After being in a bad accident, I
needed time to heal, so we spent quality time out in
the pasture doing nothing. I remember one day laying
out in the sun reading a book propped up against
his warm back, thinking this is as good as it gets.
I fell asleep, and he didn’t move until I got up.
Shari Sloan Jaworski We lost a son 13 years ago; he was
23. He found our place we live at now. After 15 years
without horses, we were able to get horses again. Long
story short, God knew I was going to need the horses.
They helped to fill my void after my son’s death. I would
go for a ride out in the woods, talk to my horses and sing
songs. It was the best therapy I could have ever had.
They kept me busy, so thankful he found our place.
Diane Kaser I had to have a hip replacement and had
trouble walking. I used a cane to help me. One nice
day I took a lawn chair out where some of the horses
were and just sat there with them. One at a time each
came up to see why I was so ‘short’ and just sitting there.
It was fun to hang out with them and just watch. My
Arab Chandon came up, sniffed and decided to hang
out and stand over me. We had a special bond and
that was very peaceful to be a horse for a short time.
Kelly Barsanti My AQHA mare was like a big dog.
When I walked the electric fence line looking for downed
wire or broken clips, she would follow right behind me
and check out EVERYTHING I worked on. My most
peaceful times were those walks and loving on her.
Ashley Wallace During the first summer I had my first
horse Roxxie, I was sitting under a tree while the sun
came up watching her play with the other weanlings.
She and another filly came over to investigate me.
They snuffled my hair and generally tried to figure out
what I was before going back to eating grass nearby.
I still revisit that moment every time I remember her.
Audrey Diane Evans Grooming and loving on the late,
great Chester while he grazed in the yard was very
soothing for me. I know he enjoyed the grass and
the attention, but I loved the sound, the smell and the
feel of all that power and strength sharing those moments.
He was good for my soul, and I hope I can
have a similar connection with my next horse.
