Vermillion Creek Assessment Vermillion Creek is a tributary to the Looking Glass River and is located on the east side of the urbanized area watershed. A portion of the creek is listed as impaired due to untreated sewage discharged/pathogens and is scheduled for development of a TMDL in 2009 (MDEQ 2006). The source of the concern is located upstream of the watershed for which this plan is written. The concern stems from an observation made by MDEQ staff that a residential property located on the southeast corner of the Beardslee Road and Braden Road intersection was observed discharging an unpermitted septic tank drainage (Scott 1993). The Shiawassee County Health Department was contacted in January 2007 to determine the current status of this problem. After researching the issue, the Health Department indicated that a new septic system was constructed in 1993 at the location in question, presumably due to the observation, and a point of sale inspection was conducted in 2006 which revealed that the system is intact and functioning (refer to Appendix F for copies of the correspondence). Since the only indication of a pathogen problem was the 1993 observation (Scott 1993) and the Shiawassee County Health Department has confirmed that this particular problem no longer exists, the assumption is that Vermillion Creek should no longer be listed as impaired for untreated sewage discharged/pathogens. Mid-Michigan Environmental Action Council Mid-Michigan Environmental Action Council (Mid-MEAC) is a non-profit and volunteer based environmental organization dedicated to improving the environment and quality of life by raising environmental consciousness and activism. Data collection was provided in the Michigan Clean Water Corps grant application, which required testing of each site and includes past monitoring data. Monitoring sites are located in Table 3-6 and Figure 3-1. In recent years, observers have noticed a decline in population of several anuran species in Michigan. Frogs and toads are sensitive to changes in water quality and urbanization. Therefore, their populations serve as an index to environmental quality. The State of Michigan is concerned about the decline of anurans. Michigan initiated a volunteer based frog and toad survey program in 1988 to increase the knowledge of anuran distribution and to monitor population over the long-term.
