Woodhull Township is rural with higher portions of pasture and forest land. Bath and DeWitt Townships are more developed but still have rural (agricultural and forest) areas that can be protected. The urban areas, which encompass approximately 11% of the watershed, include the Lansing metropolitan area (the Cities of Lansing, East Lansing, and Lansing Township), Meridian Township, and the City of DeWitt. Figure 2-2 presents a map of these local units of government. Table 2-1 shows the acreage of each community in the watershed and watershed coverage percentages. Demographics The communities with the highest population in the watershed are the City of East Lansing (35%), DeWitt Township (19%), Bath Township (14%), and the City of DeWitt (9%). The other municipalities contribute 5% or less to the watershed population. Source: UM, 2005b. Source: RSGIS, 2005. The fastest growing communities (of the major population contributors) for the period from 1990 to 2000 include City of DeWitt (+27%), Bath Township (+18%), and DeWitt Township (+15%). Communities showing population declines over this period include the Cities of East Lansing (-8%), Lansing (- 5%), and Lansing Township (-4%). The other communities in the watershed showed growth between 7% and 20%. Over the next 30 years, the watershed population is expected to grow overall by 7% every decade with growth rates of 18% for Bath Township, 10% for the City of East Lansing, 8% for DeWitt Township, and 6% for the City of DeWitt. The sparsely populated Olive, Riley, Victor, and Watertown Townships are predicted to grow between 17% and 23%. The other watershed communities have predicted growth rates between 2% and 8%. Table 2-2 shows the past, present, and future population in the region and associated population change percentages (non-participating communities shown in italics). The majority of the upland land ecosystem was comprised of Oak/ Hickory Forests.
