Atlas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lowlands</strong><br />

reach <strong>the</strong> dwarves. However, <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

ambushed by <strong>the</strong> giants -- who had been<br />

warned by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Cruth</strong> Ogres <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Traladarans’ arrival -- while crossing <strong>the</strong><br />

Achelos river at Three Axes Ford. The<br />

giants, who had positioned <strong>the</strong>mselves on<br />

<strong>the</strong> mountain spur overlooking <strong>the</strong> ford,<br />

easily crushed <strong>the</strong> Traladarans by tossing<br />

large boulders from <strong>the</strong>ir vantage position.<br />

However, dealing with <strong>the</strong> dwarves was<br />

not as easy. The miners simply closed <strong>the</strong><br />

doors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir mine and retreated deep<br />

into <strong>the</strong> mountain, where <strong>the</strong> larger giants<br />

could not follow <strong>the</strong>m. The dwarves can<br />

support <strong>the</strong>mselves (and even raise<br />

animals) for extended periods on a diet <strong>of</strong><br />

underground fungi. The dwarves<br />

periodically sent scouts to <strong>the</strong> surface, but<br />

never managed to get through <strong>the</strong> ford<br />

and contact o<strong>the</strong>r settlements. Recently,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have been besieged by o<strong>the</strong>r enemies<br />

able to deal with <strong>the</strong> tunnels (goblinoids<br />

and/or o<strong>the</strong>r monsters). Thus, <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

tried a sortie, where a few dwarves were<br />

captured by <strong>the</strong> giants.<br />

The Turnwood<br />

This high magic point is a nexus for<br />

shapechanging and transformation magics.<br />

Here, spells that alter <strong>the</strong> shape <strong>of</strong> beings<br />

and items are easier to cast and research<br />

(x2 duration and 1/2 research time).<br />

More than three millennia ago, <strong>the</strong><br />

Taymorans created <strong>the</strong>ir brand <strong>of</strong><br />

lycanthropy here, in an attempt to create<br />

<strong>the</strong> ultimate soldiers for <strong>the</strong>ir slave armies.<br />

The Taymorans built here a secret,<br />

extensive research facility, complete with<br />

wizard towers, observatories, alchemical<br />

laboratories, medical rooms, dungeons,<br />

containment rooms, wards, traps and<br />

assorted defenses. Later on, <strong>the</strong> Traldar<br />

wizard Zirchev also conducted research in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Turnwood.<br />

Their powerful magics still protect <strong>the</strong><br />

facility, though <strong>the</strong> intense magical field <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Turnwood have induced changes<br />

almost everywhere, making part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

wards into semi-sentient forces, still bound<br />

to parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> construction. The wooden<br />

towers have been infused with new life,<br />

growing into fantastic trees.<br />

The Turnwood also enhances <strong>the</strong><br />

transformation power <strong>of</strong> any lycanthrope<br />

(a +2 bonus to Transformation, and <strong>the</strong><br />

ability to act as one level higher for<br />

lycanthropes below NM level), so <strong>the</strong><br />

werewolf clans <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Achelos Woods<br />

occupy part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> structure, in a delicate<br />

power balance with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r inhabitants<br />

--- a group <strong>of</strong> Treants (ancient trees made<br />

sentient by <strong>the</strong> Turnwood magic and<br />

Zirchev’s power) led by a lone Actaeon, a<br />

powerful Wereboar wizard, and <strong>the</strong> young<br />

but ambitious Green Dragon Krolovaash, a<br />

vassal <strong>of</strong> Azem who covets <strong>the</strong><br />

shapechanging powers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gold<br />

dragons.<br />

A strangely shaped hill can be found on<br />

<strong>the</strong> upper course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Achelos river. Tall,<br />

whitish rocks raise from <strong>the</strong> flanks and top<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hill, looking like bones in <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> moon. These rocks give <strong>the</strong> hill its<br />

Traladaran name, meaning “Bone Hill”, but<br />

<strong>the</strong> area has a much longer history.<br />

It was inhabited as early as before <strong>the</strong><br />

Great Rain <strong>of</strong> Fire, when it was a large<br />

mining town in <strong>the</strong> Azcan empire, under<br />

<strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Koskatepetl, “Gem <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Mountains”. Back in <strong>the</strong> Azcans’ time,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re was, deep under <strong>the</strong> city and its<br />

mining tunnels, a shrine to Ixion,<br />

protected by priests who, according to <strong>the</strong><br />

local lore, were not human, and guarded<br />

an ancient, dangerous secret.<br />

With <strong>the</strong> rise <strong>of</strong> Blackmoorian technology,<br />

<strong>the</strong> rulers <strong>of</strong> Koskatepetl grew to desire<br />

<strong>the</strong> knowledge held by <strong>the</strong> priests <strong>of</strong> Ixion,<br />

who chose to seal <strong>the</strong> entrance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

shrine with a terrible earthquake,<br />

shattering <strong>the</strong> city. After <strong>the</strong> disaster, <strong>the</strong><br />

Koskatepetl was all but abandoned and<br />

became infested with monsters.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> Great Rain <strong>of</strong> Fire, <strong>the</strong> raising<br />

Taymoran civilization reached <strong>the</strong> area,<br />

and built a Temple <strong>of</strong> Nyx over <strong>the</strong> ruins <strong>of</strong><br />

Koskatepetl. The temple soon enough<br />

attracted pilgrims and colonists, but not<br />

too many, because its true purpose had to<br />

remain secret. The Immortal patroness <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Night found it amusing and fitting that<br />

her temple was built over a place once<br />
