Alaska Performance Scholarship (APS)
The Alaska Performance Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship that provides an
opportunity for any future Alaska high school graduate who meets a core set of
requirements to receive funding to pursue college and/or career training in Alaska.
Eligible students can receive up to eight semesters of APS aid within six years of high
school graduation. For information on qualifying for the APS please see your school
counselor or administrator.
Career and Technical Education – BSSD Pathways
The Bering Strait School District is joining with the State of Alaska which has “pledged to
create world-class schools that prepare graduates for careers – careers that may begin
immediately after high school graduation, or may require additional education and
training at the post secondary level” (Alaska Career and Technical Education Plan 2010,
page 2).
BSSD Pathways address individual student needs and interests for career preparedness
as well as the cultural and social need for an educational system that is efficient,
effective, and coordinated with regional and state workforce needs.
BSSD Pathways are organized around seven broad career clusters. The career clusters
are:
1. Health Sciences
2. Architecture, Construction, and Engineering
3. Human Services
4. Business, Information Technology
5. Education & Training
6. Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics
7. Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources
Emphasis is given to: preparing students to earn recognized industry certifications in
Career & Technical Education, preparing students for post-secondary education and
training, preparing students with entry level skills necessary for the work force in their
chosen career area, and advising students with a Personal Learning and Career Plan
transitioning them into a career/job opportunity or post-secondary education/training.
