 Alaska High School Graduation Qualifying Examination (HSGQE) The Alaska State Legislature requires that all Alaska high school students must pass an examination before they can receive a high school diploma. The HSGQE consists of three subtests: reading, writing and mathematics. A student who has met all graduation requirements of the Bering Strait School District and passed all sections of the Alaska High School Graduation Qualifying Exam will receive a high school diploma. A student who has met all graduation requirements of the Bering Strait School District but has not passed all sections of the Alaska High School Graduation Qualifying Exam shall be awarded a Certificate of Achievement. The HSGQE Retest is offered twice a year, once in the spring and again each fall, for 11 th and 12 th graders. Eleventh and 12 th grade students who need to retake one or more subtests of the HSGQE must retest at least once each year until they meet the proficiency requirement. Grades and Evaluation of Student Achievement The Superintendent or designee shall be responsible for implementing a uniform system of measuring, recording, and reporting student achievement. Principals shall ensure that student grades conform to this system. The BSSD grading system will ensure that the student, teacher, and the parents can assess progress toward the educational goals of a particular course of study. Students shall be informed in writing at the onset of any course of study of the behaviors and expectations of the course. They shall be kept informed of their progress during the course of study. Quarterly grade reports will be provided to students and parents. Semester grades (an average of quarter grades) are officially recorded on transcripts. In order to be in compliance with Alaska State Regulation 4 AAC 07.060 Student Records: (a) Each district shall maintain for each student a cumulative record consisting at a minimum, of the following: (1) Subjects student has taken (2) Grades earned and an explanation of the grading system used (3) Units of credit earned Secondary grades shall be reported for each semester as follows: A+ (97-100%) Assessments indicate a high level of understanding A (93-96%) Almost all or all learning goals are fully met A- (90-92% B+ (87-89%) Assessments indicate a good grasp of concepts & skills B (83-86%) Most learning goals are fully met B- (80-82%) C+ (77-79%) Assessments indicate satisfactory acquisition of skills & concepts C (73-76%) More than half of the learning goals are fully or consistently met C- (70-72%) D (60-69%) Assessments indicate weak acquisitions of skills & concepts Only a few of the learning goals are fully or consistently met

 F (≤ 59%) Assessments indicate very weak grasp of concepts & skills None or almost none of the learning goals are fully or consistently met I P see below see below Incomplete Incomplete grades must be approved by site administrators for students who are unable to have access to instruction due to medical or family emergencies. An “I” indicates that course requirements were not completed by the student. An “I” must be made up within a time period specified by the principal or designee not to exceed 30 days of the date when grades are issued to parents. If course work is not completed within the specified time period, the grade will be calculated based on completed/incomplete work. Pass/Fail Grading Pass/Fail grades are for credit recovery courses and special education. A student may elect to earn a “Pass” or “Fail” grade instead of an A-F grade for a course if documented in an IEP. Credit Recovery With the approval of the principal or designee, a student may be scheduled into courses specifically for the purpose of “recovering” credits and making up graduation requirements not previously earning credit. Credit recovery courses are graded “Pass” or “Fail” and earn credit but do not contribute to a GPA. Repeated Course – (Replacing Grades) With the approval of the principal or designee, a student may repeat a course in order to raise his/her grade. The student shall only receive credit for taking the course once. The highest grade received will be the permanent grade on the student’s transcript. Dropping Courses A high school student who drops a course any time during the first 2 weeks of the semester will have that course purged from the transcript and may be enrolled in a new class. Transcripts High school transcripts are legal documents. They may not be amended except to correct errors and enter replacement grades for repeated courses once courses and grades have been posted to the transcript.
