Manufacturing 13003 Industrial Arts 13207 Welding Prerequisite: Prerequisite: Grade Level: 912 Grade Level: 912 Credit: 0.50 Industrial Arts courses expose students to the tools and machines that they may encounter in manufacturing-related occupations and enable them to develop the skills they need to use these tools in various applications. Course topics typically include (but are not limited to) drawing and planning, electricity, graphic arts, woodwork, leatherwork, metalwork, plastics, and power technology. These courses typically cover general safety and career exploration as well. Credit: 0.50 Welding courses enable students to gain knowledge of the properties, uses, and applications of various metals, skills in various processes used to join and cut metals (such as oxyacetylene, shielded metal, metal inert gas, and tungsten arc processes), and experience in identifying, selecting, and rating appropriate techniques. Welding courses often include instruction in interpreting blueprints or other types of specifications. (NACTEC = 0.25 credits) 13054 Wood Processing/Production 13302 Prerequisite: Prerequisite: Grade Level: 912 Grade Level: 912 Credit: 0.50 Wood Processing/Production courses include studying the properties of woods and composites made from woods and using these materials to construct usable products. These courses enable students to experience the process of translating an idea into a finished product, with instruction in planning, designing, selecting materials, and using tools and machines. Equipment Maintenance and Repair Credit: 0.50 Equipment Maintenance and Repair courses prepare students to adjust, maintain, replace, and repair parts of machinery and to repair tools, equipment, and machines. The courses may have a general emphasis or may focus on a specific type of machinery or equipment related to a particular industry. Depending upon the intent, course topics may include electric, hydraulic, or mechanic systems; control devices, valves, and gates; or supplemental equipment such as fans, hoses, and pipes. 13055 Metal Processing/Production Prerequisite: Grade Level: 912 Credit: 0.50 Metal Processing/Production courses include studying the properties of metals and metal alloys and using these materials to construct usable products. These courses enable students to experience the process of translating an idea into a finished product, with instruction in planning, designing, selecting materials, and using tools and machines. Health Care Sciences 14001 Exploration of Health Care Northwest Campus/UAF Dual Credit Courses Prerequisite: Occupations 14154 Medical Terminology Grade Level: 912 Credit: 0.50 Exploration of Health Care Occupations courses expose students to the variety of opportunities available within the health care industry (e.g., such as nursing, therapy, dental care, administrative services, and lab technology). These courses provide experiences in several of these occupational clusters, along with information and knowledge related to the health care industry as a whole. (NACTEC = 0.25 credits) Prerequisite: Grade Level: 1112 Credit 1.00 NWC/UAF HLTH F100 Study of medical terminology including analysis and origin of word roots, prefixes and suffixes. Understanding the word components, students will be able to build, spell and define medical words. Content will be presented by body systems focusing on terms for anatomy, diagnostic, laboratory and medical specialties. Includes use of medical dictionary, word pronunciation and abbreviations. Designed for health care professionals. 14055 Emergency Medical Technology Prerequisite: Grade Level: 912 14051 Nurse Aide Training Credit: 0.25 NACTEC Emergency Medical Technology courses place a special emphasis on the knowledge and skills needed in medical emergencies. Topics typically include clearing airway obstructions, controlling bleeding, bandaging, methods for lifting and transporting injured persons, simple spinal immobilization, infection control, stabilizing fractures, and responding to cardiac arrest. The courses may also cover the legal and ethical responsibilities involved in dealing with medical emergencies. 14154 Medical Terminology Prerequisite: Grade Level: 912 Credit: 0.50 In Medical Terminology courses, students learn how to identify medical terms by analyzing their components. These courses emphasize defining medical prefixes, root words, suffixes, and abbreviations. The primary focus is on developing both oral and written skills in the language used to communicate within health care professions. Prerequisite: High school graduation Grade Level: 912 Credit: 3.00 NWC/UAF HLTH F107 NWC/UAF Nurse Aide Training Teaches basic nursing skills necessary to assist the nurse and be an efficient health care team member. Presents positive communication skills while providing care of residents’ physical and emotional needs in a variety of health care settings. Content satisfies the theory and clinical skills needed to take the State of Alaska exam to become a Certified Nurse Aide. Additional prerequisites: 10th grade reading level by exam; or permission of instructor. Student must be in good physical condition and have the following immunizations: Hepatitis B series, two MMRs, a PPD within 3 months of the clinical component of class. 14099 Professional Skills for the Workplace Grade Level: 1112 Credit 0.50 NWC/UAF HLTH F110 Presents skills to ensure success for the professional secretary, receptionist, medical worker and others.
