Born in the USA!
Struck at the Denver and San Francisco Mints as the USA assisted Australian
WWII coin production, the 1942-44 S & D Mintmark 16-coin Silver Set is a
powerful piece of Australia’s numismatic – and wartime – history.
The heightened demand for currency in Australia was largely due to the post-
Depression recovery, as well as the influx of heavy spending American servicemen.
Even with the Perth Mint brought out of ‘retirement’ to assist the Melbourne Mint,
Australia could not strike sufficient coinage to meet demand.
The USA stepped up to the plate, and the series of 16 coins that resulted forms one
of the most fascinating chapters of the Australian predecimal story. Graced with S
and D mintmarks, the set includes five threepences (1942S, 1942D, 1943S, 1943D &
1944S), five sixpences (1942S, 1942D, 1943S, 1943D & 1944S),
three shillings (1942S, 1943S & 1944S) and three florins
(1942S, 1943S & 1944S).
Comprising an average circulated example of each of the
aforementioned dates, housed in an album, we have just

The Centenarian Hoard
A rare event, with fresh Aussie silver hoards seldom
emerging on the market, the Centenarian Hoard represents
a fantastic opportunity for you to secure Australia’s
largest circulating coin type – the famous 1930s

Hoarded in the early part of WWII, as the fear of
invasion rose to fever pitch, the man who stashed this
substantial silver stockpile passed away recently at the
age of 100 – hence the name of the hoard. With

Struck well over 130 years ago, the 1879M Sovereign features
what are arguably the most recognisable, most beloved designs of
numismatic history. Created by Italian master-craftsman Benedetto
Pistrucci, the majestic St George & the Dragon design is virtually

First Sydney Shield!
The first coin in the series that replaced the Sydney Mint Sovereign,

first Shield Sovereign struck at the Sydney Mint – the famed
1871S Shield Sovereign!
As a result of the worldwide popularity of the original Sydney Mint
Sovereigns – particularly in India – the Royal Mint in London demanded
that the Mint employ ‘traditional’ British sovereign motifs from 1871. Given
the option of striking St George and/or Shield types, the Sydney Mint
chose to use both designs. A work of unmitigated excellence, designed
by Jean Baptiste Merlen, the armorial magnificence of the Shield reverse
is complemented perfectly by the splendid Young Head portrait of
Queen Victoria.
One of the most important Shield Sovereigns, as
the first of its kind, the Sydney Mint’s 1871S Shield

Waterloo
Medal!
An authentic artefact from one of the
world’s most famous battles – with a direct
Australian connection – Downies is proud
to present a genuine, original 1815 Waterloo
Medal. Awarded to Francis Moran MD, who
spent much of his later life in Australia, this
superbly designed military decoration gives
you the chance to own a piece of one of the
most important events in European history.
Born in Ireland and studying medicine in
Edinburgh, Moran joined the Royal Staff Corps
in 1813 as a hospital assistant. It is believed he
served in that capacity at the Battle of Waterloo
on 18 June 1815, and would have undoubtedly
helped treat the seemingly endless list of
casualties suffering horrific cannon, gunshot and
small arms wounds. Along with each member
of the British forces, Moran received what has
become one of the world’s most sought after
military decorations – the Waterloo Medal.
Struck by the Royal Mint, this rare 37mm silver
medal bears the portrait of the Prince Regent (the
future George IV) on the obverse, with a depiction
of Victory on the reverse. Testimony to the
medal’s provenance, Moran’s name is impressed
around the edge. Missing the ribbon and
suspension, and carrying a few small knocks,
the medal is graded Fine, and is complete with a
substantial quantity of research material.
Hotly pursued around the globe, an original 1815
Waterloo Medal does not emerge on the market

Of the innumerable battles throughout history,
the Battle of Waterloo is among the most
famous. The perfect way to commemorate one
of Britain’s finest hours, the official Royal Mint
Waterloo £5 coins are all available at Downies!
Marking the final defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte,
the Battle of Waterloo was fought on June 18 th
1815 in present-day Belgium. Bringing an end to
over 20 years of conflict in Europe, and bringing
an end to Napoleon’s reign as ruler of France, the
Anglo-allied forces suffered 24,000 casualties,
with the French suffering 41,000 casualties in the
fierce close-combat struggle.
Providing an option for all collectors, the Royal
Mint has issued the Waterloo Bicentenary £5 in
cupro-nickel BU, 28.28g sterling Silver Proof and
39.94g 22-carat Gold Proof. Taken from mintages

Although the 90% silver Franklin Half Dollar still had years to run before its compulsory
‘retirement’, this much-admired USA coin type was unexpectedly axed after President
John F Kennedy was shot dead in Texas in November of 1963.
The assassination of Kennedy saw the US Government authorise the US Mint to strike
a Half Dollar commemorative in honour of the former President. Replacing the Franklin
Half Dollar, the first coin of the JFK Half Dollar Series was issued in 1964. Measuring
30.60mm in diameter, as with its Franklin predecessor, the 1964 date is the ONLY
Kennedy Half Dollar struck in 90% silver.

In a remarkably good state of preservation, we
have secured a small number of genuine 1,700+
year-old terracotta seals – relics of the Holy Land
with an amazing tale to tell.
In the 3rd century AD, an enormous Holy Land library
was destroyed by fire. The library held thousands
of papyrus scrolls – each sealed with a piece of
terracotta embellished with an image created with
Headlined by a rare, genuine coin from the infamous Pontius
Pilate, this compelling 4-coin collection takes you on a journey
back over 2,000 years to the Holy Land.
As the Roman Prefect who condemned Jesus Christ to die
by crucifixion, Pontius Pilate guaranteed himself eternal
fame. Pilate ruled Judaea from 26 to 36AD and,
some two millennia after he was recalled to Rome,
his coins are very rare and highly sought after. A
chance to hold Biblical history in your hands, a
genuine Bronze Prutah of Pilate is included in this
collection!
Rome had ruled Judaea since the fall of the
Hasmonaean dynasty – a dynasty which
achieved independence under John Hyrcanus,
