Executive Meeting Dates for 1995 Portage la Prairie School Division Office Board Room All meetings begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday, January 30th Friday, April 7th Friday, June 9th Friday, October 6th "New" Members of SSAAM One of our new members of SSAAM, Candace Borger, who is now Administrator of Educational Support Services in St. James - Assiniboia School Division recently was awarded Honorable Mention as a Visionary Administrator. The following article gives some background regarding her work as principal of Crestview Elementary School: Students at Crestview School in Winnipeg, Manitoba, are putting together presentations with HyperStudio, composing with The Writing Center, graphing and creating spreadsheets with ClarisWorks, and going online with AT&T and National Geographic Kids Network. At-risk students are now benefiting from an individualized computer learning system; the Macintosh lab and automated library are available to everbody and the school;s fron office relies on technology to facilitate a variety of administrative duties. Principal Candace borger has done a lot to make all this happen. Her commitment to integrating technology into Crestview's curriculum has included an aggressive and on-going pursuit of grants. Borger's approach to staff development has also been an energetic and innovative one. By creating the position of Program Implementation Assistant in Technology, and by instituting a flexible time schedule, a buddy system, and before- and afterschool training sessions, Borger has empowered both staff and students with technology-related skills. Now, also through her initiative, staff and district-level coordinators are continuing their education with T&Us Professional Develpment Institute. Borger has been a driving force in educating parents, too. An active volunteer program and schoo-sponsored "Technology Evenings" have been forums for them to gain hands-on experience with computers. Borger has also used the technology as a means to reach beyond the classroom, establishing "real world: connections for her students through online networks with businesses and other, such as authors, who share their expertise and give feedback to students on their writing. Crestview teacher Lorraine Prokopchuk makes it clear how borger has touched the school and community when she says, "...we all share in The Vision."
