Math 272-03 - Linear Algebra I Spring 2013 MWTR 12:20 - 1:10
Instructor: Dr. Mark J. DeBonis Office Hours: M,T,R 11:15 - 12:10 or by appt. in RCL 201F
Email: mark.debonis@manhattan.edu Phone # 718-862-7925
Course Description: Applications of the definite integral, transcendental functions, integration techniques and
infinite series. (Meets four hours per week). (3 Credits)
Learning Goals/Outcomes for Math 272:
At the end of the course the students will have
• An understanding of vector, matrices, vector spaces and linear transformations
• Problem solving skills as it relates to the above mentioned material.
• An understanding of some concrete applications of linear algebra.
• An understanding of how to use a Computer Algebra System (in our case Maple) to solve problems relating
to the above mentioned material.
Evaluation Criteria:
• Corrected Homework Problems (10 % in total)
• Three Quarterly Exams (20 % each) - on Weeks 4, 8 and 12 - No Calculators
• Cumulative Final Exam (30 %) - No Calculators
Tips for Success:
• Only fully documented excuses for missing exams will be considered in regards to a make-up and notification
prior to the exam time must be made. Such make-ups, in general, will be of a greater difficulty.
• You are expected to attend all scheduled classes, but in the event you must miss a lecture, you will be
responsible for all class work which was missed.
• A student who interacts more during lecture is likely to have a more fulfilling experience in the class. For
this reason questions and comments are strongly encouraged (so long as they are relevant to the class!).
• Homework problems will be collected, a subset of which will be corrected. It is extremely important that
you have some success in doing the Homework. This should be achieved to some extent on your own (for
otherwise, how can you expect to do well on the exams?)
• Good study habits are the following:
– Work on homework as it is assigned during lecture (do not delay).
– Read the previous lecture notes before attending the next class.
– Keep a list of all definitions, and a list of relevant theorems.
– Homework assignments, exam solutions and lots more can be found on my website:
Attendance Policy: Students are required to fulfill all course requirements as detailed in the course syllabus for
their registered courses. They will be held accountable for the entire course content including completing all course
assignments and attending classes. All absences from any class period or activity including a laboratory session
are considered unexcused absences unless the student completes and submits a Request for Excused Absence
Form that is ultimately approved. After four unexcused absences, the dean of the school in which the student is
matriculated shall be notified and the student shall attend an interview to discuss his or her excessive absences.
As a result, the student may be referred for counseling, be advised to withdraw from the course, and/or receive a
letter or warning if the students scholastic record is jeopardized. Students cannot expect that any makeup tests,
quizzes or laboratories will be provided and may incur an appropriate grade penalty for such absences, excused
or unexcused. Reasonable accommodations for excused absences are encouraged but are solely at the discretion
of the faculty member.
Policy on Students with Disabilities: If a student has a documented disability(ies) that requires special
accommodation(s), the student needs to provide acceptable documentation of that disability (or disabilities)
to the Specialized Resource Center in Miguel Hall, Room 300-not to the faculty in charge of the course. The
Specialized Resource Center will then contact the faculty in charge of the course with appropriate instructions to
accommodate the student’s needs.
Policy on Academic Integrity: Cheating during exams will not be tolerated whatsoever and the guilty party
will receive an F in the class and a letter put in his/her personal file.
The Center for Academic Success: The Manhattan College Center for Academic Success is committed to
providing student centered programs and initiatives designed to enhance the learning experience of all students.
The Center for Academic Success provides tutoring in a wide range of subjects, including all core courses. Tutoring
is designed to support students with their courses by providing content-specific assistance accessed through
individual tutoring, study groups, or online tutoring.
The Center for Academic Success is committed to providing the best services to students. All tutors receive
ongoing training and certification according to National Tutoring Association standards. This certification
fosters an environment of professionalism while providing students with leadership opportunities and recognition
for their contributions. National certification also ensures that all peer tutors are kept current regarding
best practices in their field of study. Please call 718.862.7414 or email success@manhattan.edu to make
an appointment. Walk-ins are also welcome. For a complete schedule of tutoring, please visit our website at
