President begins 

新校長遴選工作展開 

As Prof. Ng Ching-fai is due to retire next year, the University 

has launched a search for a new President and Vice-Chancellor 

現任校長吳清輝教授將於明年退休 , 大學已開始物色新校長的工作。 

The search is on for a new candidate to take over from Prof. Ng 

Ching-fai as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University next 

year. And at a briefing held in February, staff, students and alumni 

shared their comments and suggestions as well as their wish 

list for the new leader. 

A Search Committee, chaired by Mr. Wilfred Wong, Chairman 

of the Council and the Court, will lead the quest for the ideal candidate 

to take the University into 

the next phase of its 

development. The Committee 

has set down preliminary 

search criteria defining what 

the University is broadly 

looking for in potential 

candidates and has also 

decided on a time frame for 

the search. 

Scholarship, vision, 

leadership – these are some 

of the qualities the Committee 

is seeking in the new leader.

Apart from a distinguished track record in teaching and 

scholarship, the University needs an individual adept in strategic 

planning as well as an effective communicator who can forge 

partnerships with stakeholders. 

It is also important to find a candidate whose ideals match 

the University’s, who understands the challenges and opportunities 

facing higher education in the region and who can work with different 

cultures. 

“The President is the leader of the University and will face 

the challenges of this dynamic world,” said Mr. Wong. The new 

President will take charge at a crucial juncture as the University 

is implementing its campus expansion plan and programmes to 

address the 3-3-4 education reforms. 

Candidates will be shortlisted by September after a local 

and international recruitment process. Simultaneously, there will 

be consultations and focus group meetings with academic and 

non-academic staff, students and alumni with a second round 

of meetings scheduled for June. Updates on the search will be 

featured on a website and feedback is welcome via email. 

The Committee hopes to conclude the search in October. 

This seems like a tight deadline but it’s designed to give the successful 

candidate enough time to resign from his or her current position 

before joining the University in the summer.

學術成就、遠見、領導才能等只是新校長 

須具備的部分條件。除了擁有卓越的教學及研 

究成就 , 大學亦要求候選人具有制定策略計劃 

的能力 , 並善於溝通 , 能與教學人員、行政人 

員、學生及校友建立夥伴關係。 

此外 , 候選人必須認同大學的教學理念 , 

瞭解香港和亞太地區的高等教育將要面對哪些 

挑戰和機遇 , 能與不同文化背景的人士合作。 

王英偉主席表示 :「校長是大學的領袖 , 

新校長上任後 , 將面對新學制帶來的種種挑 

戰。」挑戰包括正如火如荼地進行的大學校園 

擴建計劃 , 以及為「三三四」新學制設計的新 

本科課程。 

遴選委員會將在本地及海外進行招聘工 

作 , 預期於九月確定最後的候選人名單。期 

間 , 委員會會與教學及行政人員 , 以及學生及 

校友保持溝通 , 聽取意見 , 並暫定於六月舉行

The University played host 

to some important guests this month. On 18 March, 

HKSAR Chief Executive Mr. Donald Tsang visited the campus to boost 

the morale of students who will graduate this year. Prof. Ng Ching-fai, 

President and Vice-Chancellor, accompanied Mr. Tsang to the canteen 

where they chatted with final-year students. The Chief Executive also 

toured the laboratories of the School of Chinese Medicine and attended 

a career sharing session for third-year students organised by the Alumni 

Relations Office and the Office of Student Affairs. 

Earlier, on 3 March, about 300 students and staff took the opportunity 

to discuss the 2009-2010 Budget with Financial Secretary Mr. John Tsang 

at a forum organised by the School of Business. Prof. Stephen Cheung, 

Dean of the School of Business, moderated the event.

It’s been a month chock-a-block 

with important developments on 

campus. With Prof. Ng Chingfai 

due to retire next year, the 

University kicked off its search 

for a suitable candidate with a 

round of consultations and focus 

group meetings for staff, students 

and alumni. If you missed those,

As we prepare to welcome 

a new leader, we have not lost 

sight of what makes this 

University tick – our people. At 

this year’s Thanksgiving Service, 

the University paid tribute to 

employees who have contributed 

much during the many years they 

have spent here. Among the 

recipients of the Long Service 

Award was Beth Tsui of the 

Student Affairs Office who has 

completed 35 years of service. 

At the ceremony, five academic/ 

teaching staff were honoured with 

the President’s Award for 

Outstanding Performance in 

recognition of their many 

achievements and dedicated 

service. 

We are also proud that the 

University’s proposal to revitalise 

the historic Lui Seng Chun building 

on Lai Chi Kok Road won the 

approval of the HKSAR

The University was awarded the opportunity 

to revitalise the historic Lui Seng Chun building 

under the HKSAR Government’s “Revitalising 

Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme”. 

Bringing our core strengths into play, the 

University proposed to turn the building into 

a Chinese medicine and healthcare centre 

which will double as a cultural landmark and 

tourist attraction. 

Lui Seng Chun is a four-storey building 

located at 119 Lai Chi Kok Road which was 

built in 1931 by Mr. Lui Leung, one of the founders 

of the Kowloon Motor Bus Company. In its 

early days, the ground floor of the building 

was occupied by a well-known Chinese bonesetting 

medicine shop named “Lui Seng Chun”, 

while the upper floors served as living quarters 

for members of the Lui family. Later, the family 

donated the building, which had been categorised 

as a Grade I historical structure, to the 

Government. 

The HKBU proposal seeks to incorporate 

this unique history into the revitalised structure 

which will be named the “Hong Kong Baptist 

University Chinese Medicine and Healthcare 

Centre – Lui Seng Chun”. While conserving 

the architectural merits of the building and 

incorporating green features, the Centre will 

also serve the community by: 

* Offering a range of Chinese medical services, 

from internal medicine to bone-setting, 

naprapathy and acupuncture 

* Providing regular free medical consultations 

for the needy 

* Arranging internships and training courses 

for Chinese medicine students and 

practitioners 

* Organising periodic exhibitions and healthcare 

talks to educate the public on Chinese 

medicine as well as guided tours to introduce 

the history of the building

memory lane with a tour of this quaint structure.

長 , 將這幢歷史建築物變身為中醫藥保健中心 , 並作為

雷生春位於荔枝角道一一九號 , 樓高四層 , 由九龍 

汽車有限公司其中一位創辦人雷亮先生於一九三一年建 

造。昔日建築物底層為一所名為「雷生春」的跌打藥店 , 

樓上各層為雷氏家族成員的居所。其後 , 雷氏家族將大 

宅捐贈予政府 , 這幢雷氏大宅其後獲政府評為一級歷史 

建築物。 

浸大建議把這幢饒具建築特色和歷史意義的建築物 

活化成「香港浸會大學中醫藥保健中心 — 雷生春堂」, 

在保存雷生春文物和建築特色的同時 , 也服務社區 : 

* 提供多元化中醫醫療保健服務 , 包括內科、骨傷及跌 

打科、推拿科、針灸科等 

* 為區內弱勢社群提供義診服務 

* 為中醫藥學生及從業員提供實習機會和培訓課程 

* 舉辦中醫藥展覽和健康講座 , 普及中醫藥知識和推行 

健康教育 , 並安排導賞團介紹雷生春的歷史 

就讓《浸大校園》帶各位進入時光隧道 , 參觀這幢 

獨特的建築物。

On February 12, the University 

launched a Green Festival cum East 

Asian university students’ summit 

on environmental protection. The 

community-wide “No Plastic Bag 

Day” campaign was also launched 

recently. It appears that 

environmental protection has again 

become the talk of the town. 

Environmental protection is 

a concept closely linked to our daily 

lives. From a scientific perspective, 

we can explore ways to save energy. 

From a political and economic point 

of view, whether natural resources 

can be effectively used and protected 

is the key to the sustainable 

development of a country. In short, 

environmental protection means 

protecting the natural resources 

shared by all human beings as they 

are fundamental to survival. 

We have to admit that as part 

of the modern lifestyle, we tend 

to consume excessively and pollute 

the Earth, jeopardising our future. 

Some people even believe that the 

more advanced technology is, the 

more seriously it will pollute the 

Earth. However, is technology to 

blame? 

I think human beings play a 

greater role. Nowadays, many 

people promote the green lifestyle 

which involves reducing the use 

of electricity, water and paper, 

limiting waste, using public 

transportation more and driving 

personal vehicles less, separating 

rubbish at source etc. These are 

steps that can easily be taken. If 

everyone adopts a green lifestyle, 

I believe that the ecology can be 

preserved. Thus, it is our attitude 

towards nature that makes a 

difference. Both technological 

advancement and environmental 

protection are important. We should 

seek a balance between the two.

the United States who is widely

lecture at the University entitled 

“Caring for Nature: From Respect 

to Reverence”, during which he 

pointed out that the human spirit 

is a core problem in environmental 

protection. Human beings should 

understand and accept that they 

are part of nature and should care 

for and respect nature 

wholeheartedly. This is something 

we should think about deeply. 

Every small effort counts. 

HKBU has joined the World Wide 

Fund Earth Hour 2009 event and 

will switch off non-essential lights 

on campus at 8:30 pm for an hour 

on 28 March. I urge colleagues 

and students to join hands to save 

our Earth by doing the same at 

home or in the residence halls on 

that day.

「日日無膠袋日」, 一時間「環保」又再 

成了城中的熱門議題。 

作為一種生活態度 ,「環保」這個 

觀念與我們日常生活的每個細節息息相 

關。 

從科學的角度 , 我們可以研究不 

同的節能方法 ; 從政治和經濟去考量 , 

一個社會能有效運用天然資源以及盡力 

保護天然資源免受破壞 , 是它可持續發 

展的一個重要因素。簡而言之 , 環保就 

是要保護人類共同擁有的天然資源 , 因 

為這就是人類賴以存活的基本條件。 

我們不得不承認現代人的生活模 

式不但傾向耗用大量天然資源 , 更甚的 

是做成各種污染 , 危害了地球的健康。 

有人甚至認為科技愈進步 , 對地球的污 

染愈嚴重。然而 , 這確實是科技的錯 

嗎 ? 

我認為「人」的因素更重要。現在 

許多人提倡綠色生活 , 例如減少耗用 

水、電和紙 , 減少浪費 , 多使用公共交

去年十一月 , 環境倫理學之父 

Holmes Rolston 教授到大學主講「關 

心大自然 : 由尊重到崇敬」的課題。 

他指出了環保的一個核心問題 , 就是 

人的心靈。人必須明白自己是大自然 

的一部分 , 應發自內心的關愛和尊重 

大自然。我覺得這一點非常值得我們 

深思。 

其實 , 我們只要在生活上稍作改 

變 , 便能為世界盡一分力。大學將在 

三月二十八日晚上八時三十分關掉校 

園非必要的照明系統一小時 , 響應 

「地球一小時 2009」行動。我也邀請 

同事同學在家中或宿舍一同參加 , 保 

護我們的地球。

Dedicated service rewarded 

見證浸大三十五年 

At the 53rd Founders’ Day Thanksgiving Service held on 24 February, 131 colleagues 

were presented with “Long Service Awards” in recognition of their dedicated service 

to the University. 

In his address, Mr Wilfred Wong, Chairman of the Council and the Court, said 

that it was the magnificent vision of the HKBU founders that established the Hong 

Kong Baptist College 53 years ago. However, he added, it is the effort of all staff 

and students that makes HKBU what it is today – a university highly recognised by 

the community, with some disciplines regarded as the most distinguished in Hong 

Kong. 

Reluctant to part ways 

Mrs. Beth Lee, Careers Counsellor 

at the Office of Student Affairs, 

is the most senior recipient of 

the Long Service Award, with 

35 years of service under 

her belt. Yet her relationship 

with HKBU goes back much 

longer. 

In 1970, Beth joined 

the then Hong Kong Baptist 

College as a student. After 

graduating, she chose to work 

for her alma mater and ended 

up spending 35 years here. 

“Working at HKBU is my first and 

last full-time job,” says Beth. 

A devoted Christian, Beth is dedicated to 

her work not only because she shares the same religious 

background as the University but also because of the extensive network she has built 

while working here. “It’s like saving money. You need to stay on the job and build your 

network.” 

Beth worked with the Registry and Personnel offices before finally settling at the 

Office of Student Affairs. What motivates her is the satisfaction she gains on the job. 

“During the counselling sessions, students share their thoughts with me and I 

then guide and advise them. In their feedback forms, they express their appreciation 

for me. This makes me feel I am valued at the University,” says Beth. 

She also loves to interact with young people and believes they can learn from 

each other. “The University provides a good platform for me to encourage myself to 

keep studying, learning new things and adapting to the culture of different 

generations.” She studied secretarial management at Baptist College and did a 

degree programme in careers counselling to prepare for the counselling job. 

Beth will be retiring at the end of the year but is reluctant to part ways with the 

University. She has decided to continue serving the University as a volunteer. She 

also plans to get qualified as a professional counsellor on the Mainland and to then 

do volunteer work in Sichuan. 

難捨浸大情 

服務浸大三十五年的學生事務處就業輔導主任李徐端華女士 (Beth), 是獲獎同事中年 

資最長的一位。然而 , 她與浸大的淵源原來不止於此。 

Beth 於一九七零年入讀當時的浸會書院。畢業後重返母校工作 , 一幹便三十五 

年。「浸大是我第一份全職工作 , 也是最後一份。」 

Beth 全心全意服務浸大這麼多年 , 不僅因為她是虔誠的基督徒 , 還因為工作讓她 

建立了龐大的人際網絡。「建立人際網絡猶如儲蓄一樣 , 需要經年累月一點一點的累積 

下來。」 

她先後任職註冊處、人事處和學生事務處。工作上帶來的滿足感 , 是一直支持著她 

的動力。 

她說 :「在輔導過程中 , 同學會分享心中所 

想 , 我則給他們指引 , 他們回過頭來會很感激 

我 , 令我覺得我的工作很有價值。」 

她坦言喜愛跟年輕人接觸 , 認為可收教學 

相長之效。「大學是個很好的平台 , 讓我不斷策 

勵自己 , 不斷進修 , 學習新事務 , 並融入不同 

的時代文化。」 

「我本身主修秘書管理 , 為了做好輔導工 

作 , 我便修讀有關就業輔導的學位課程 , 充實 

自己。」 

Beth 已屆退休之年 , 但她對浸大難捨難 

分 , 已計劃退而不休 , 繼續義務協助大學。她 

還打算考取內地的諮詢師資格 , 然後往四川當 

義工。

獎」予一百一十三位同事 , 以表揚他們多年來對大學的發展作出貢獻。

前憑遠見和理想 , 創立了當時的浸會學院。今天浸大獲得社會認同 , 某些學科 

更獲公認是全港最優秀的 , 這些都是全體師生和同事努力的成果。

Language and Literature 

A world-renowned scholar of Chinese 

classical poetry, Prof. Ge is recognised 

as a leading expert on Tang poetry. The 

impact of her research has not only been 

felt among scholars of classical poetry 

but also among sinologists and their 

students abroad. Prof. Ge’s research 

achievements include her pioneering 

study of the crucial transitions in poetic tradition from the Han to the Song 

dynasty as well as her work on the causes behind the flourishing of High 

Tang poetry. 

中國語言文學系葛曉音教授 

葛曉音教授是國內、外著名的中國古典詩文學者 , 獲公認為唐詩研究的頂尖 

專家。葛教授對漢魏六朝詩到北宋歷次詩歌革新的發展和演變 , 提出了新看

During the nine years in which Prof. 

Chiu was Head of the Department, the 

University became a leader in human 

resource management (HRM) education 

in Hong Kong. Often a member of 

University committees and task forces, 

Prof. Chiu has contributed to formulating 

policies that affect the well being of staff. 

He is also an outstanding contributor 

to the HRM profession and has been actively involved in community service 

and professional bodies, promoting equal opportunities, ethical management, 

corporate social responsibility and work-life balance in Hong Kong.

趙其琨教授曾擔任管理學系系主任九年 , 在他領導下 , 浸大的人力資源管理 

學課程成為全港最受推崇的同類課程。趙教授積極參與大學的行政工作 , 曾

Ms. Wu Yin-ching 

Associate Professor, Language Centre 

A well-known writer of Chinese poetry and 

lyrical prose, Ms. Wu is valued at the University 

as a motivated, innovative and effective 

teacher. Her excellence in teaching is evident 

in the positive feedback from her students 

and the results of her writing classes. Many 

students, under her guidance, have developed 

an interest in creative writing in Chinese 

and have won prizes in public competitions. 

Some are now renowned writers in Hong Kong. Her students say she has inspired 

them to have a “creative, broader and more profound outlook on life”.

胡燕青女士是位著名詩人 , 亦擅長散文寫作 , 在校內備受學生愛戴 , 稱讚她對 

教學充滿熱誠 , 並懂得運用創新而有效的教學方法 , 教學成就獲得充分肯定。

Prof. Zhang Jianhua 

Head, Department of Biology 

An outstanding all-round scholar, Prof. 

Zhang was recently named by renowned 

scientific journal Nature as “one of the 

five crop researchers who could change 

the world” for his landmark work in boosting 

agricultural output without increasing water 

consumption. His research focuses on areas 

of Northern China where farmers have 

benefited from drip irrigation techniques, 

which can save up to 50 per cent of irrigation water while maintaining the 

same crop yield. There have been more than 4,000 citations of his journal 

papers and his H-index has reached an impressive 32. 

生物系系主任張建華教授 

張建華教授在如何在耗水量不變的條件下增加作物產量的研究 , 取得卓越成 

就 , 最近獲國際權威雜誌《自然》列為「五位可改變世界的作物研究者」之 

一。他的研究集中在華北地區 , 在他的研究協助下 , 當地農民運用滴灌法 , 減

Prof. Terry Yip 

Professor, Department of English Language 

and Literature 

Over the 13 years in which she headed 

the Department, Prof. Yip raised the visibility 

of the discipline and the quality of its research 

and programmes. Owing to her supervision 

and guidance of faculty members – her 

younger colleagues in particular – the 

Department achieved a brilliant performance 

in the RAE 2006, in which the discipline 

of English Language and Literature was ranked first among the eight tertiary 

institutions. Prof. Yip has actively participated in numerous University and 

inter-institutional committees and is valued for her ability to grasp issues, 

pinpoint problems swiftly and formulate practical solutions. 

英國語言文學系葉少嫻教授 

葉少嫻教授在擔任系主任的十三年間 , 提高了人們對英國語言文學的認識 , 以 

及學科的研究和課程素質。由於她管理有道 , 並熱心協助同事 , 尤其年輕的同 

事 , 學系在二零零六年的研究評審工作中表現出色 , 英國語言文學科的研究指

the Second Runner-Up award in the International Genetically 

Engineered Machine Competition organised by the Massachusetts 

Institute of Technology, USA. The research, jointly conducted 

with 10 students from the University of Hong Kong, focused 

on generating artificial growth patterns in E. Coli by changing

Approximately 200 secondary school principals participated

Past, Present & Future 

The picture features the cake cutting ceremony at the 

Founders’ Day Thanksgiving in 1986 to kick off the celebration 

of the then Hong Kong Baptist College’s 30th anniversary. 

There was indeed good cause to celebrate, as this 

was the year Hong Kong Baptist College introduced 

the first batch of degree courses – namely the Bachelor 

of Science (Honours) in Combined Sciences and the 

Bachelor of Social Work. 

In subsequent years, more degree courses were 

gradually added and in 1989, all honorary diploma 

programmes were upgraded to honorary degree courses. 

The graduation of the last batch of honorary diploma 

students in 1991 also marked the end of the era of nondegree 

programmes at Hong Kong Baptist College. 

Today, HKBU provides opportunities for undergraduate 

studies in various full-time or part-time major/option 

areas leading to Bachelor degrees. Taught and research 

postgraduate programmes are also available in a range 

of disciplines.

Approximately 80 students participated in “Famine 12”, 

a project organised by the Centre for Holistic Teaching and

Spring always ushers in humidity. Since Hong Kong has a subtropical 

marine climate, we experience extremely humid weather 

in March and April, with humidity often at around 90%. To keep 

the household dry and free of bacteria, it’s common to use dehumidifying 

appliances. 

Apart from electrical dehumidifiers, dehumidifying tanks, 

activated charcoal, bamboo charcoal and silica gel are available 

in the market. Yet how effective are they? Dr. Kelvin Leung, 

Assistant Professor of the Department of Chemistry, shares

is relatively less effective than calcium chloride in absorbing 

moisture.

to commemorate women’s many achievements and to draw attention to women’s
