WERENSKI HOLDS OFF CHARGING FIELD FOR VICTORY
Benitez Earns Top Honors
GREENSBORO, GA — After ten consecutive weeks of tournaments, the International Junior Golf Tour
(IJGT) traveled to Reynolds Plantation’s National Course for the eleventh event of the 2008 season. The 27-
hole track, designed by Tom Fazio, features dramatic elevation changes, dense forests, and numerous greenside
bunkers that tested the psyche of every player that stepped up to the tee boxes.
Because of rainy conditions, the course played long for the competitors; however, several players were able to
take advantage of the receptive greens during the week to post quality scores. Richard Werenski, an
International Junior Golf Academy (IJGA) student from South Hadley, MA fired rounds of 70 and 72 on his
way to victory in the Boys 16-19 Division. Juan Carlos Benitez (IJGA), of Pueblo, Mexico used his one-underpar
71 on Sunday to pull away from the field and claim the title in the Boys 13-15 Division. Coming away with
the victory in the Boys 12 and Under Division was JJ Qualkenbush of Lahaina, HI. In the Girls 19 and Under
Division, Xin Wang (IJGA) of Guangzhou, China took the crown with a two-day tournament total 155.
After the first day of competition, Werenski was the only player to finish under-par, with a solid score of 70.
Trailing him by three shots with opening rounds of 73 were Ryan Madigan (IJGA), of Waterford, Ireland, and
Jerry Ruiz (IJGA) of Pueblo, Mexico. Other competitors were close to follow, with 12 players within seven
strokes. Sunday, despite a suspension of play due to lightning, brought more impressive scores tightening the
leader board, including a tournament-low round 68 by Scott Howieson (IJGA) of Ashstead, United Kingdom.
Madigan was able to follow up his first round by carding a two-under par 70 for a one-under tournament total of
143, but still wasn’t able to catch Werenski, who fired an even-par 72 on his way to a tournament total 142 to
take the victory. Madigan finished with second place honors, and Howieson’s Sunday charge earned him the
third place finish with a two-day total of even-par 144.
In the Boys 13-15 Division, Benitez and Konstantin Von Beringe (IJGA) of Kreuzlingen, Switzerland came out
strong both shooting opening rounds of 74. Their nearest competitors were four strokes off the lead. After
Sunday’s round, the field was spread out even more, with Benitez firing a one-under par 71 for a tournament
total 145, which claimed the first place honors. Nicolai Kokholm(IJGA) of Smorum, Denmark made an
impressive attempt to catch Benitez by carding a two-under-par 70 adding to his first round 78 for a weekend
total of 148, which gave him second place. Finishing out the top three was Von Beringe who shot a Sunday
round of 79 for a tournament total of 153.
In the Boys 12 and Under Division, Qualkenbush’s consistent play with rounds of 89 and 87 gave him the win
with a tournament total of 176. Following him in second and third, respectively, were Luke Miller of Venetia,
PA, and Hayes Rule of West Palm Beach, FL.
Wang took the clubhouse lead into Sunday after shooting an opening round 79, while Elizabeth Wendt (IJGA)
of Houston, trailed her by a mere two strokes after carding an 81. However, Wang would open up the gap
during the second round by firing an impressive 76 for the victory and a tournament total of 155. Wendt would

earn the second place honors by shooting 83 on Sunday for a tournament total of 164. Natalie Mirra (IJGA) of
Boxford, MA would round out the top three with a two-day total of 171, carding rounds of 82 and 89.
