HYUN BRILLIANT FOR THE COME FROM BEHIND VICTORY
Course management pays off for Reilly
HUMMELSTOWN, PA — This weekend the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) kicked off their 2009-
2010 season by hosting their first competition at Hershey Links. As the chocolate smell filled the air and the
sun filled the sky, Hershey provided a perfect start with exciting golf and great weather conditions. Boasting
a links course layout and a beautiful new clubhouse, Hershey Links treated the competitors very well during
Labor Day Weekend and the scoring showed.
In the Boys 13-19 Division, Noori Hyun of Centreville, VA fired a final
round 3-under-par 69 to come from behind and be named this week’s
champion. Following the completion of the second round, Hyun found
himself two strokes behind Harrison Shih of Saddle River, NJ. Shih caught
fire early posting an opening round of 69 and a career low 68 on Sunday to
take the lead. Not to be denied, Hyun’s continued to charge with his stifling
short game throughout the event. Sticking his Monday approach shot on the
2 nd hole to two feet and his third shot on 9 th hole to inches, Hyun
continually applied the pressure to his fellow playing competitors with his
tap in birdies. Hyun finished with a tournament total of 208, putting him at
8-under-par for the competition. Also playing with Hyun was second place
finisher Ryan Triller from Street, MD. Triller had a solid tournament carding rounds of 70, 71, and 72
respectively, finishing 3-under-par for the event. A three way tie rounded out the oldest boys division with
honors going to Matthew Hardman of Gettysburg, PA, Cameron Liebert of Malvern, PA, and Shih, all
shooting a tournament total of 2-over-par.
“This is the first time I shot under par for each round of a three day event,” said the humbled Hyun. “I played
very well all tournament and had a little bit of everything working in my game that allowed me this victory.”
Hyun also commented on his final round playing partners. “Playing with Shih and Triller was an honor, they
were very friendly and nice and I really enjoyed playing with them today.”
The Boys U-12 Division saw Hershey, PA native Jake Reilly run away
with the lead. Reilly carded rounds of 74, 79, and 76 to win his division
on his home course by eight strokes for a 13-over-par, 229 tournament
total. Highlighting Reilly’s tournament was an incredible approach on the
1 st hole on Sunday from 90 yards out. Hitting a sand wedge, this brilliant
shot spun back and rolled over the edge of the cup, missing an eagle by
inches on the difficult par 5. Hartej Gill of Monroe Township, NJ shot a tournament total of 237, to claim
second place honors. Traveling all the way from Newport Coast, CA, Michael Phan placed third in the
division, shooting rounds of 87, 82, and 84 respectively.
Reilly came off the course with all smiles Monday, “I had a great advantage playing my home course, this
was a very good tournament for me and I had fun.” When asked how many times he played Hershey Links,
he replied, “I have played it quite a few times in my life.”
The Girls U-19 Division was the closest of the divisions, with several girls
within four strokes of the lead going into the final round. The division went
to Michelle Peng of West Harrison, NY, who carded a 37 on her front nine
on Sunday to help begin her charge. Hole No. 17 was the turning point for
Peng, sticking her 7-iron to three feet for her birdie on the par 3. Once she
had the lead she never looked back, shooting a final round and division low
round of 80 to become this week’s champion. Finishing in second place was
Lauren Petty of Baldwinsville, NY, shooting rounds of 85, 83, and 84
respectively. Traveling with her brother Michael, Monica Phan from
Newport Coast, CA took third in her division as well, making it a very successful family trip.
Peng touched on her performance after her final round, “I was very inconsistent this tournament, but I played
much better on the back nine all three days than I did the front nine. The key to my success on the back was
my great approaches I had from 100 yards and in.” Peng spoke on her key shot at the seventeenth, “That
birdie on No. 17 really gave me confidence and momentum for the rest of my round, and I am very happy
with how the tournament turned out.”
The three day tournament at Hershey Links provided some great low scores. Our IJGT belt buckle winners
this week were: Tommy Conway of Birghton, MI (67), Jake Reilly of Hershey, PA (74), and Michelle Peng of
West Harrison, NY (80). We would like to congratulate all winners who competed this weekend.
