CANADA REMAINS IN CONTROL THROUGH SECOND ROUND OF MATCH PLAY
Scotland Holds off Charging USA
ST. ANDREWS, SCOTLAND —Second round of play was held at the Crail Golfing Society’s Craighead Links.
One of the world’s oldest golf clubs, Crail Golf society was founded in February 1786. Craighead Links has a
panoramic seascape and breathtaking country views. With no two golf holes facing the same direction, the fierce
winds off the coast change playing conditions constantly; a true test of any golfer’s ability.
The morning matches between the Boys 15-19 Division witnessed a change in momentum. After Canada’s
impressive showing in Wednesday’s opening round, the USA and Scotland demonstrated desire to cut into the
deficit. Taking the USA to an early start Charles Valluzzo of Mt. Pleasant, SC was victorious in both matches
defeating Canada 3 and 2 and Scotland 1-up. Fellow American Zach Verses of Great Falls, VA and a current Hank
Haney International Junior Golf Academy (HH IJGA) student played exceptional and posted a 3 and 2 victory over
Canada and 4 and 2 over Scotland. Blake Blumbrelow of Douglasville, GA contributed two victories as well
defeating Canada 2 and 1 and Scotland 3 and 2. Fellow Scotsman Josh Anderson of Glenrothes, Fife and Jack
Thorburn of Dunfermline, Fife were successful in their matches giving Scotland 4 more points on the day.
As the 14 & Under Division’s matches came to a close, Scotland continued their success from the opening round
but, Canada posting a divisional 6-2-0 proved to be in contention for match points. Ewan Scott of St. Andrews, Fife
has been unstoppable as he continued his winning ways defeating Canada 2-up and USA 6 and 5. Robbie Spriddle
of Dunfermline, Fife contributed two victories as he won over Canada 4 and 2 and USA 6 and 5. Canadians Joey
Kremer of Toronto, ON and Aaron Crawford of Calgary, AB put together brilliant rounds of golf defeating USA and
Scotland 5 and 3, 2 and 1 and 1-up, 2-up respectively.
The final matches of the day turned out to be quite exhilarating. In the Girls 19 & Under Division, Rachel Hanlon of
St. Andrews, Fife brought her will to win as she put away her matches quickly finishing 6 and 5 over Canada and 7
and 6 over USA. The short game proved to be the deciding factor in the division as Mayko Chwen Wang of
Hacienda Hts., CA took her match to No. 18 all square. Wang clinched the victory in front of a sizeable gallery as
her 60-foot-putt dropped in for birdie to overcome Thea Hedaman of Saskatoon, SK winning 1-up.
After two rounds of play, Canada’s 14-10-2 performance has set the John Clark Trophy in their sites but, as Scotland
(15-13-0) and USA (11-13-2) cut into the lead, the Euro Junior Golf Cup will certainly be decided after intense finalround-matches
at the Ladybank Golf Club.
