COOLEY GOES TWO FOR TWO IN IJGT EVENTS THIS SEASON
Miller Takes Home Third Championship
PINEHURST, NC — The rain held off just long enough on Sunday to allow the field at the IJGT event at
Pinehurst’s National Golf Club ample time to finish their final rounds. The temperature dropped quickly
overnight from Saturday’s sunny mid-60’s to an overcast Sunday filled with temperatures fluctuating in and out
of the 40’s and 50’s, leaving the competitors the opportunity to challenge both their physical and mental game
on a tough layout. National Golf Club, previous host to both U.S. Open Qualifying and PGA Tour Qualifying
School, features some of the toughest greens IJGT competitors will face this year. Nevertheless, all of the
competitors pushed forward and came away with a renewed appreciation for the sometimes overlooked art of
putting.
In the Boys 13-19 Division, Ben Cooley of Rydal, PA picked up his second win of the season
with a two round total of 149, 5-over-par. With the win, Cooley takes home his second
championship in as many events, adding to his strong showing at the IJGT event at Hershey
Golf Club in Hershey, PA in the first weekend of October. Second place honors in the Boys
13-19 Division went to two competitors, Hank Hanegraaff of Waxhaw, NC and Evan Notaro
of Bath, PA. Both Hanegraaff and Notaro carded identical rounds of 80 and 76 over the twoday
event to finish with a final score of 156.
With the lead overnight, Cooley talked about his mental preparation leading into Sunday’s
final round. “I really just focused on having a relaxed mindset going into the final round. I knew it was going
to be important to focus on a solid short game and I did.” That relaxed mindset paid off on Sunday as Cooley
finished with two pars, securing his victory on the tough tournament venue.
One of the IJGT’s most involved competitors this year in the Boys U-12 Division, Willis
Huynh of Syosset, NY, picked up his second victory in the last two weeks by posting
rounds of 83 and 74, to finish the tournament with a combined score of 157. Huynh’s only
previous win came one week ago at the IJGT Event at La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, CA.
Coming in a close second place, Luke Miller of Venetia, PA put together two solid rounds
of 81 and 80, to finish the tournament at 161, four strokes back of Huynh. Not far behind,
Walker Kirk of Lancaster, PA took third place honors putting together two rounds of 81 to
finish with a total score of 162.
A grateful Huynh showed his appreciation during his victory speech. “I want to thank my parents for bringing
me down here, Pinehurst’s National Golf Club for letting us play the event on their course, and the IJGT staff
for putting all of this together.”
Taking the championship in the Girls U-19 Division was HH IJGA student Kelly Miller of
Llanrhystud, United Kingdom. Miller took home her third championship of the season,
having previously won IJGT events at Tradition National and Port Royal’s Barony Course in
Hilton Head Island, SC. Miller pulled away from the field on Saturday by shooting 77 and
added a 79 to her tournament total for a finishing score of 156. Rounding out the top three
were fellow HH IJGA student Caroline Dula of Salisbury, NC and Olivia Bowling of
Charlotte Hall, MD. Dula and Bowling finished their tournament with total scores of 174
and 181 respectively.
Adding another win to her season, a trend that flourished at the National Golf Club event, Miller explained her
preparation for the event. “My goal was to hit fairways and keep the ball in play. I had no out of bounds issues
at all this weekend. After seeing the greens on Saturday, I knew putting was going to be important. I have
settled in with my short game lately and only had one three-putt all weekend.”
Entering Sunday’s final-round, players were looking to finish strong and receive the coveted IJGT Low Final
Round Belt Buckle. This week’s winners were: Boys 16-19 Division, Ben Cooley, 76. Boys 13-15 Division,
Gregory Mauldin, 78. Boys U-12 Division, Willis Huynh, 74. Girls U-19 Division, Kelly Miller, 79.
