MARCHIANDO MARCHES TO VICTORY
Sugimoto Repeats out West
Beaumont, CA – This weekend, the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) traveled to the East Valley Golf
Club, home of the PGA Southern California for their second California event of the season. The Champions
Course played host to the event, where the deep fairway and greenside bunkers accompanied by undulating
greens tested competitors’ touch and short game. When the last putt dropped, top honors were taken by those
who were able to maintain their focus around the greens.
In the Boys 16-19 Division, Justin Marchiando of Carmel, CA appeared to be the clear favorite early Saturday
after carding an opening round 4-under-par 68 which included six birdies. Marchiando coasted through the
final-round posting a 1-over-par 73 for the wire-to-wire victory. At just 13 years of age, the win at East Valley
was Justin’s first IJGT victory in the Boys 16-19 Division.
“After Saturday’s solid round, I just wanted to keep the momentum going. I told myself not to give up and stay
positive,” Marchiando said. “I played well; I hit a lot of greens and made some great putts.”
Jim Liu of Smithtown, NY was the runner-up, finishing with a tournament total of even-par 144. Liu started the
final-round nine strokes off the leader and proceeded to card six birdies en route to a 5-under-par 67. Camden
Nicholson of Newport Beach, CA rounded out the top three shooting a 1-over-par 145 for the tournament.
In the Boys 13-15 Division, Eric Sugimoto of San Diego, CA won by five strokes after consistent rounds of 73
recording five birdies en route to his title Sunday. Eric credits his success this past weekend to his mental
game.
“I was totally focused both Saturday and Sunday,” Eric commented. “I just played one shot at a time and ended
up reaching my pre-tournament goal of winning big.”
Andrew Morgan of Long Beach, CA was the runner-up, finishing with a tournament score of 151. Neal
Donahue of Coto De Caza, CA rounded out the top three shooting a 158 for the tournament.
In the Boys 12 and Under Division, current merit point leader JJ Qualkenbush of Lahina, HI put together two
solid rounds of 75 and 78 to take home the title. Qualkenbush has been on quite a hot streak as of late taking
dead aim at every flagstick. Qualkenbush’s heroic shot making started by holing out from 90 yards on the par 4
No. 6 on Saturday and again on Sunday on the par 5 No. 9 from 130 yards, both for eagle. Qualkenbush had
this to say about his remarkable shot on the ninth hole;
“My ball was sitting in a soggy area of the fairway and I was just concentrating on getting it close. Next thing I
knew; it went in.”
As players entered Sunday’s final-round, many were hoping to leave with the coveted IJGT Belt Buckle
awarded to those who record the lowest round on Sunday. As though it was déjà vu, this week’s winners were
all receiving their second Belt Buckles for their outstanding final-round scores. Jim Liu fired a 5-under-par
round of 67 while Eric Sugimoto posted a solid 73 on Sunday and JJ Qualkenbush took home another Belt
Buckle with a final-round of 78.
