<strong>Hawthorne</strong> employees have produced Boe<strong>in</strong>g 747<br />
fuselages s<strong>in</strong>ce the program began <strong>in</strong> 1968.<br />
At <strong>Hawthorne</strong>, <strong>Vought</strong> builds the fuselage<br />
section, which is 154 feet long. Each shipset has<br />
28 major panels, delivered to Boe<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
13 custom, oversized railcars. The fuselage is the<br />
largest s<strong>in</strong>gle subcontracted section of the<br />
aircraft. (The 747 doors and floor beams are<br />
produced <strong>in</strong> the company's Stuart, Fla., facility, and<br />
the tail section <strong>in</strong> the Dallas facility).<br />

ackground<br />
<strong>Vought</strong> has two Southern <strong>California</strong> facilities ---<br />
<strong>Hawthorne</strong> and Torrance - which collectively make up<br />
the <strong>Hawthorne</strong> <strong>site</strong>. The <strong>site</strong> is located 12 miles south<br />
of downtown Los Angeles and 5 miles east of the Los<br />
Angeles International Airport. Employees at the <strong>site</strong><br />
build the panels for the Boe<strong>in</strong>g 747 center fuselage.<br />
PRODUCTS AND CAPABILITIES<br />
The <strong>Hawthorne</strong> <strong>site</strong> produces Boe<strong>in</strong>g 747 fuselages. To help<br />
ensure first-time quality, the <strong>site</strong> employs the Accurate<br />
Fuselage Assembly, an advanced digital manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
process that elim<strong>in</strong>ates product variability and allows<br />
"snap-together" f<strong>in</strong>al assembly of large structures.<br />
