A few years ago Brian Eno suggested
that those moments when you sing
collectively you stop thinking about
‘me’ and start thinking about ‘us’.
This thought, outside of the undeniable
artistry contained within, is at the core
of our Festival.
When we say we make this island sing we
believe that we are not only providing an
abundance of talent, light and warmth to
our winter months but we are also bringing
communities together to celebrate those
moments of ‘us’.
This year we are proud to present a program
that celebrates a diversity of human voices
across all ages, not only bringing in the best
from elsewhere, but also proudly shining our
light on our own home-grown talent. For
the first time our sense of ‘us’ also includes
Launceston and an even greater body of work
along the east coast. Not only do we fill our
towns with voices, but we also fill them with
Tasmanian voices!
But rather than acknowledge all the amazing
artists, conductors and musicians who are
soon to arrive — I would like to use this
opportunity to especially welcome the 1000+
choristers and singers who come into our
program as participants, acknowledging that
it is those hordes of crazed ensemble-ists who
roam the streets and laneways, night and day,
that give our Festival its unique character.
It goes without saying that my thanks go out
to everyone who has made this year’s Festival
possible, our Festival team and board, our
associated partners, supporters, venues and
artists and of course the wider public
of Tasmania.
So to all who come into our programs, in
whatever way you enter, wherever you may
be, as a singer, learner, adventurer, punter,
performer or aspiring heavy metal a cappella
singer, we welcome you and assure you that
you will be part of something remarkable.
Welcome to the 2015 Festival of Voices.
SINGING CITY
SINGING CITY
WILL HODGMAN
The Festival of Voices is uniquely
Tasmanian. It has grown from Hobart’s
vibrant artistic and cultural scene and
brings together thousands of people
every year. Each time the Festival lights
up our winter we see famous artists and
everyday vocalists experiencing the
same joy in sharing their stories through
song. With participation and education also at its core, the
Festival continues to offer something for everyone.
Events like the Festival of Voices help make Tasmania
such a wonderful place to live and visit, and winter is the
perfect time to enjoy the camaraderie and warmth of
choirs, workshops and concerts.
The Tasmanian Government is proud to support the
Festival of Voices. Thank you to the many people who
work so hard to bring the Festival to life and congratulations
to all Tasmanians who get involved. To those of you who
have travelled to be part of this year’s Festival, I wish you
a very pleasant stay in Tasmania and hope you have the
chance to see more of our island while you are here.
The Hon. Will Hodgman MP
Premier
Minister for Tourism, Hospitality & Events
DAMON WISE
The Festival of Voices enters its second decade of existence
committed to celebrating all that is great about Tasmania
and the human voice.
Originating from a time when winter festivals were the
exception, not the norm, Festival of Voices now finds itself as
the centrepiece to Tasmanian life in mid-winter, completing
the heady mix of community events and spectaculars that
have joined us over the past few years.
What makes our Festival special is the relationship that we
have between the people, the places and the artists that
come into our program. Almost our entire program now has
participation at its core — be it through workshops, master
classes, short courses or indeed performance. This aspect of
the program can be likened to 80% of the iceberg below the
surface, it’s not easy to see but it gives our program a solidity
and impact that no other program can rival.
It’s also easy to get sidetracked by impressive statistics
and growth percentages — which the Festival certainly
has — but our program is more than that, it is a chance for
the whole of the community to come together, learn and
share, experience something remarkable and even have
fun. So this year is our opportunity to celebrate and share
with each other and our guests the unique event we call the
Festival of Voices.
I would like to congratulate the artists, participants and
Festival team for putting together a remarkable program
for 2015!
of Voices in transforming us into a
Singing City and creating an energising
atmosphere in winter.
The council is committed to activating the
city through the support of cultural and
community events to be enjoyed by locals
and visitors. This year’s Festival will fill
many of the city’s major venues including
City Hall which will host Voicebox and
some more unexpected city venues with
the Pop Up Program and Singing in
This year we are also supporting the
much loved, free community event
the Bonfire and Big Sing, which will
once again take place in Hobart’s
The important focus of these events is
The success of our Festival is a result
of remarkable team work, from staff,
close, but deserve recognition in every
LET’S FILL
THIS TOWN
WITH VOICES
“ When you sing with a group of people,
you learn how to subsume yourself into a
group consciousness, because a cappella
singing is all about the immersion of the
self into the community. That’s one of the
great feelings — to stop being 'me' for a
little while and to become 'us'. That way
lies empathy, the great social virtue.”
BRIAN ENO
