3571 Boer War QSA clasps Orange Free State, Transvaal, Wittebergen, 

Cape Colony, South Africa 1901 re-engraved to Tpr J.Jackson 

464 NSW Citizens BC (some remnants of original naming remain 

despite milled rim) nicely toned VF 

War Memorial roll confirms the person’s identity (Murray p.79) but 

notes that he was “Invalided, Australia, 23.8.00” Est. $500 

3573 WWI Military Medal George V type impressed to 8003 Bmbr 

J.M.McSweeney 16/By Aust FA VF and desirable 

MM recommendation 23rd June 1917: 

On the afternoon of the 21st June 1917, at Messines, the 16th 

Battery was heavily shelled and all ranks were ordered to leave the 

gun pits and seek cover, five casualties having previously occurred. 

At 3.30p.M. The camouflage at No.1 pit caught fire and burnt fiercely 

endangering about 300 rounds of Shrapnel and H.E. stored in the pit 

alongside the gun. BSM Crooke called for volunteers to assist him 

to put out the fire. No.7967, Bdr Brown J.B, No.8090, Driver Bishop 

R.G, No.8003, A/Cpl McSweeney J., and No.9470, Gnr Baker T.C.R. 

immediately volunteered, and these other ranks at great personal 

risk succeeded in putting the fire out by throwing buckets of water 

over it, the water being obtained from shell holes and a well nearby. 

The whole of the camouflage was destroyed and many sandbags 

set alight also a few rounds of ammunition were charred. All of the 

above took place under very heavy from the enemy

3572 Military Cross George V type, reverse inscribed “F. S. Croker, Sept. 

1918” in case of issue, EF and including copied service papers 

Extract of citation London Gazette 29 November 1918, 

Commonwealth of Australia Gazette 23 May 1919: 

For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Under heavy fire 

he repaired a bridge which was urgently required for the advance 

of artillery and horse transport during an attack, and though 

wounded, he remained at work until the bridge was completed. He 

showed splendid determination and resource

MM recommendation 18th June 1916: 

This Stretcher Bearer has on several occasions been conspicuous 

for bravery under fire. At Gallipoli his work stood out during a sever 

bombardment of Lone Pine on 29th November. Again on the day 

of the evacuation 19th December his work displayed coolness and 

courage under fire. In the trenches at Fleurbaix on 23rd April 1916 

he led a party down a communication trench which was under 

heavy artillery fire, in order to rescue two wounded men

Undated MM recommendation: 

This NCO by his initiative and tireless energy displayed in the 

preparation of gun positions and the carting of guns, beds, and 

ammunition, calling forth the utmost of physical endurance, set a 

splendid example of devotion to duty to men under his charge. 

Also during the preliminary bombardment on the morning of 8th 

August 1918 E of Hamel he carried out the task allotted to him 

under difficult conditions. 

Later he went forward into the newly captured territory and 

assisted in turning the captured guns round and using them 

against the enemy

3576 WWI Distinguished Conduct Medal George V type impressed to 

1910 Cpl G.W.Banfield 57/Aust Inf VF 

DCM recommendation 30th April 1918 

At Villiers Bretonneux, East of Amiens, on the night 24th/25th April, 

1918, Corpl. Banfield showed conspicuous gallantry and initiative 

when his section was held up by machine gun fire. He alone 

charged a machine gun position, killing the crew and capturing 

the gun. By his act he undoubtedly saved the lives of his men, who 

were advancing on the position. His action set a very fine example 

to his men and his courage and initiative were of the highest order 

and deserve special recognition

the Roll of Honour, the name Alfred Ernest Hands “also known as 

Roberts” appears with the date of death (KIA) in France 4th Aug 1916 

(the name Hands does not appear in the nominal roll). The listed 

place of association (Burnley Victoria) equates with the embarkation 

roll next of kin address for Alfred Roberts Est. $150

3599 WWII POW/Tobruk group of six: 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Defence 

Medal, War Medal, Australian Service Medal, all pantographed 

to SX737 R.C Boulger; Rats of Tobruk Medal numbered 160 

and engraved SX737, EF and an extremely rare combination of 

POW in Europe (escaped) with a Rats of Tobruk Medal. The lot 

includes a studio portrait of Boulger in uniform plus photocopies of 

documentation including Service & Casualty Form, AMF Statement 

by POW, Proceedings for Discharge Sheet, correspondence 

dated November 1992 and February 1993 from Australian Army 

to Boulger’s family regarding the posthumous issue of medals 

(explaining the late type of naming on the unclaimed medals) 

Sapper Robert Charles Boulger, born Glasgow Scotland 24th 

April 1914, enlisted Adelaide South Australia 27th October 1939; 



discharged 15th March 1946. Posting at discharge 2/3 Field 

Company RAE (6th Div Engineers); embarked May 1940 from 

Sydney; disembarked 17th June 1940 at Gourock, Scotland; HMT 

L-12 disembarked 30th Dec 1940 Middle East. Taken Prisoner 

by German forces at Derna 8th April 1941. Unofficially reported 

POW 10th April 1941; Officially reported POW (Radio Vatican) 11th 

July 1941. Interned in Italy at Gruppignano Camp 57 December 

1941; interned at Camp 106 July 1943. Escaped to Switzerland 

December 1943, then arrived in Italy from Switzerland October 

1944, listed for return to Australia (arrived Melbourne November 

1944). Later suffered compound fracture of right leg at 111 

Aust.Con. Depot and remained in convalescence for much of 

the remainder of the duration of service. Boulger’s Statement of 

Capture reads “During the retreat from Benhahzi (sic) in convoy 

we were intercepted by German armoured forces. I escaped from 

this but was captured later in the day by a German patrol. When

3604 Anzac commemorative medallion 1967 named to R.M.Armitage 

in case of issue with original Government of Australia slip and exdisplay 

information card with personal details of the recipient 

2nd Lieutenant Reginald Montague Armitage enlisted with 47th 

Battalion 3rd Field Ambulance 20th August 1914, entered Gallipoli 

campaign on the first day of action and later wounded, KIA at

A rudimentary search reveals two possible recipients: 158 L/Sgt 

Frederick Abbot MM 17th Battalion of Redfern who enlisted 5th 

March 1915, embarked 12th May 1915 and RTA 2nd Jan 1919 (the 

embarkation records spell his name as Abbott); less likely is 13735 

Private Kenneth Fleming Abbott 7th Field Ambulance who enlisted 

29th Nov 1915 and RTA 12th June 1919 - however he left Australia 

29th March 1916 Est. $90 

3601 WWII Pacific Star, the reverse impressed “Sample in Silver Plated 

Copper, Stokes Melb. Australia”, a rarely seen trial, slight loss of 

silvering in places else EF and rare 

In submitting tenders for the manufacture of service medals for 

Australians, local medallists including Amor, Parkes and Stokes 

produced a small number of trials for consideration and approval 

from dies supplied by Britain Est. $250

The 12th Regiment has a proud history since formation in 1715, not 

least of which was to serve with distinction during the Napoleonic 

Wars, receiving battle honours ‘Egypt’ (1801-2), ‘Peninsular’ (1811- 

14) and ‘Waterloo’ (1815). The regiment was renamed the 12th 

(Prince of Wales) Royal Lancers Regiment in 1817. D.Hastings 

Irwin (4th edn. 1910) states: “(Regimental medals) were not issued 

by the government but were generally issued by officers of the 

regiments, at their own expense, to non-commissioned officers and 

men for bravery, long service, temperance &c, and were, as a rule, 

generally discontinued when the Long Service Medal was instituted 

in 1830”. Of five types listed for the 12th Lancers (Light Dragoons), 

three appear to be unique gifts to individuals while the other two 

are general awards: the first being undated, with PW-LD above and 

below the Prince of Wales’ plumes and engraved ‘Reward for 14

photographs of the hall in its heyday and just prior to its

consecrated 17th March 1887 with Sir William Clarke once again

3848 Hunter, John: “An Historical Journal of the Transactions at Port Jackson 

and Norfolk Island, with the Discoveries which have been made in 

New South Wales and in the Southern Ocean since the publication of 

Phillip’s Voyage...” a large volume of 580 pages rebound in leather 

and marbled covers, the majority of original illustrations removed and 

replaced by loose facsimiles on archive paper though some originals 

still exist within the binding. A wealth of early information relating to 

Australia. Inspection recommended Est. $125 


3849 Mitchell, Major T.L; “Three Expeditions into the Interior of 

Australia” 1838 published by T&W.Boone London in two rebound 

green and gilt blocked cloth volumes with all original contents and 

illustrations (some in colour) intact including original cloth backed 

map at rear of Volume I, each volume marked in ink on title page 

“Parkhall”. The lot comes with an information sheet indicating that 

Park Hall was the name of the Mitchell family’s country residence 

in Appin, meaning that these volumes may well have formed part 

of the Mitchell family library (further added research supports this 

contention). A most impressive and near original lot 

Thomas Livingstone Mitchell (1792-1855) Surveyor-General 

and explorer, born in Scotland and arrived in Australia 1827 as 

Assistant Surveyor General for New South Wales. He undertook 

three of his four major expeditions between 1831 and 1836 and 

after obtaining extended leave in 1837 he left for England where 

he produced the above account of his exploits. In April 1844 

Mitchell was elected to the Legislative Council at a by-election in 

Port Phillip on the platform of separation from New South Wales, 

but his continuing role as Surveyor-General forced him to resign 

his seat later that year. In 1845 he began his fourth expedition 

north-west of Boree in search of a viable route to Port Essington 

and a great river flowing north-west. He was unsuccessful in this 

quest. His personal ambition, determination and lack of suitable 

delegation skills finally led to a Royal Commission into the running 

of the Survey Department in July 1855, but whilst on a field survey 

he contracted a chill which developed into pneumonia and he died 

in Sydney 5th October of that year Est. $250

exact facsimile of the edition of 1870 by Sampson Low, Son, and 

Marston London; this edition published by John L.Sherriff Sydney 

in a much smaller format with 453pp and lacking the inlaid map 

of the London edition, the pages within the likely original green 

cloth hard covers. The name of the book’s original owner has been 

cut from the title page of the book but most pages have not been 

separated along top margin folds, a rare early Australian edition.

all items housed in what appears to be a related case for lodge issues 

The first two items are particularly impressive with magnificent 

obverse engraving, and the lot is worthy of further research by a 

collector of such material 

It is certain that the recipient of the second (and probably the last) 

item is Alfred Edward Burrows, born London 1854 as the youngest 

son of John William Burrows (see the first jewel). The family departed 

England in 1858 and arrived in Melbourne 11th December 1858. 

Other members of the extended Burrows family were already living 

in Bendigo at this time. Having been employed in photographic work 

in Bendigo and Castlemaine, he arrived in Launceston in the early 

1880s and established a studio with his brother. The business later 

expanded to premises in Sandhurst. He died in Launceston aged 84 

on 10th Aug 1937. He had three daughters and two sons, one also
